Psalms 59
Berean Study Bible

Deliver Me from My Enemies

For the choirmaster.

The psalm was prepared for corporate worship under the direction of the leader responsible for temple music. David’s personal danger became a prayer the whole congregation could sing, recognizing that God’s people often face enemies and must look to Him together.

Psa 39:1 For the choirmaster. For Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.…
Psa 62:1 For the choirmaster. According to Jeduthun.…

To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.”

The psalm was to be sung with a known melody, likely one suited to urgent prayer and confidence in God’s preservation. The title fits David’s circumstances, as Saul sought his life while God restrained the king from destroying him.

A Miktam of David,

David composed this psalm, a Miktam—possibly a golden or precious composition—as a carefully preserved and significant song. Though trapped by danger, he recorded his plea and confidence in God for Israel’s worship.

Psa 16:1 A Miktam of David. Preserve me, O God, for in You…
Psa 56:1 Be merciful to me, O God, for men are hounding me;…
Psa 60:1 You have rejected us, O God; You have broken us;…

when Saul sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him.

Saul sent men to surround David’s home after becoming increasingly threatened by David’s success and God’s favor upon him. Michal, David’s wife and Saul’s daughter, warned him and helped him escape during the night. The psalm rises from the immediate danger of men waiting to seize and kill him.

1Sa 19:11 Then Saul sent messengers to David’s house…
1Sa 19:15 But Saul sent the messengers back to see David and told them…
1Sa 18:11 and he hurled it, thinking, “I will pin David…

Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;

David appeals to God as his own God, trusting that the Lord sees the threat and has power to rescue him. His enemies were not imaginary or distant; they were acting under Saul’s orders and were near his home.

Psa 143:9 Deliver me from my enemies, O LORD; I flee to You…
Psa 31:15 My times are in Your hands; deliver me from my enemies…
Psa 140:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Rescue me, O LORD,…

protect me from those who rise against me.

David asks God to place him beyond the reach of those determined to harm him. Though Saul’s men had the authority of the king behind them, David’s safety rested ultimately in the Lord.

2Sa 22:49 who frees me from my enemies. You exalt me above my foes;…
Psa 18:48 who delivers me from my enemies. You exalt me above my foes;…
Psa 3:1 A Psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom.…

Deliver me from workers of iniquity,

David asks God to rescue him from those bent on evil. Saul had sent men to watch David’s house and kill him, opposing the man God had chosen to be king.

Psa 6:8 Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity,…
Psa 28:3 Do not drag me away with the wicked, and with the workers…
Job 31:3 Does not disaster come to the unjust and calamity…

and save me from men of bloodshed.

The men pursuing David were men of bloodshed, violent individuals prepared to kill or harm others. Facing immediate danger, David looks to God for protection and justice rather than seeking personal revenge.

Psa 26:9 Do not take my soul away with sinners, or my life…
Psa 139:19 O God, that You would slay the wicked—away from me…
Psa 55:23 But You, O God, will bring them down to the Pit…

See how they lie in wait for me.

David describes enemies who watch for an opportunity to destroy him, like Saul’s men sent to surround his house and kill him. Their actions are deliberate and hidden, revealing the danger he faced despite having done them no wrong.

Psa 56:6 They conspire, they lurk, they watch my steps…
Psa 10:8-9 He lies in wait near the villages; in ambush…
Pro 1:11 If they say, “Come along, let us lie in wait for blood…”…

Fierce men conspire against me

Powerful and violent men had joined together against David, likely including Saul’s servants and others loyal to the king. Their coordinated hostility anticipates the unjust opposition later directed against Jesus by those who plotted His death.

Psa 31:13 For I hear the slander of many; there is terror…
Jer 18:18 Then some said, “Come, let us make plans against Jeremiah,…
Psa 64:2-4 Hide me from the scheming of the wicked,…

for no transgression or sin of my own, O LORD.

David appeals to the Lord as one unjustly pursued. Though imperfect in other matters, he had not committed an offense deserving Saul’s murderous pursuit. His innocence under false accusation points forward to Christ, who suffered though He had committed no sin.

Psa 7:3-5 O LORD my God, if I have done this, if injustice…
1Sa 24:11 See, my father, look at the corner of your robe…
1Sa 26:18 And he continued, “Why is my lord pursuing his servant?…

For no fault of my own,

David protests his innocence before God. Saul had pursued him despite David’s loyalty and refusal to harm the king, even when opportunities arose. David’s danger was not the result of rebellion or wrongdoing.

Psa 35:7 For without cause they laid their net for me;…
Jhn 15:25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:…
Lam 3:52 Without cause my enemies hunted me like a bird.

they move swiftly to attack me.

His enemies act with determined violence, like men assigned to seize or kill him. The threat reflects the repeated attempts on David’s life during Saul’s reign and the constant danger surrounding him.

Isa 59:7 Their feet run to evil; they are swift to shed innocent blood…
Rom 3:15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
Pro 1:16 For their feet run to evil, and they are swift…

Arise to help me,

David calls on God to intervene decisively. Though unable to overcome his enemies by his own strength, he appeals to the Lord as his defender and deliverer.

Psa 35:2 Take up Your shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid.
Psa 3:7 Arise, O LORD! Save me, O my God! Strike all my enemies…
Psa 44:26 Rise up; be our help! Redeem us on account of…

and take notice.

He asks God to look upon his condition and judge the matter rightly. David trusts that the Lord sees both the innocence of the afflicted and the violence of those who pursue them.

Psa 10:14 But You have regarded trouble and grief;…
Psa 33:13 The LORD looks down from heaven; He sees all the sons…
Gen 16:13 So Hagar gave this name to the LORD who had spoken to her…

O LORD God of Hosts,

Israel’s God rules over the armies of heaven and earth, possessing full authority to defend His people and judge His enemies.

Psa 80:4 O LORD God of Hosts, how long will Your anger smolder…
2Sa 7:26 Your name will be magnified forever when it is said…
Isa 1:24 Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel,…

the God of Israel,

Though Lord of all creation, He bound Himself to Israel by covenant and remained faithful to His promises to the patriarchs and to David’s line.

2Ki 19:15 And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD: “O LORD, God of Israel…
2Sa 7:27 For You, O LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,…
Psa 106:48 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,…

rouse Yourself to punish all the nations;

Surrounded by hostile powers, the psalmist appeals for God to act openly against those who oppose His purposes and persecute His people. God’s judgment extends beyond Israel to every nation accountable before Him.

Psa 9:19-20 Rise up, O LORD, do not let man prevail;…
Psa 79:6 Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge…
Psa 82:8 Arise, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations…

show no mercy to the wicked traitors.

The enemies in view are willful rebels whose treachery is directed not only against David but against the Lord’s anointed and the people of God. The prayer seeks righteous judgment upon persistent evil.

Deu 20:17 For you must devote them to complete destruction…
Ezk 5:11 Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,…
Isa 24:16 From the ends of the earth we hear singing…

Selah

The musical or liturgical pause calls attention to the certainty and seriousness of God’s coming justice.

Psa 46:11 The LORD of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob…
Psa 9:16 The LORD is known by the justice He brings;…
Hab 3:3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran.…

They return in the evening,

Saul’s men repeatedly watched David’s house, waiting for darkness to conceal their attack. Evening brought danger as hostile forces moved under cover of night, showing their persistence and intent to kill.

Zep 3:3 Her princes are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves…
Gen 49:27 Benjamin is a ravenous wolf; in the morning…
Psa 104:20-21 You bring darkness, and it becomes night…

snarling like dogs

The attackers are pictured as wild, scavenging dogs—noisy, aggressive, and driven by violence. Their hatred was not restrained by justice or reverence for God.

Exo 11:7 But among all the Israelites, not even a dog will…
Isa 56:10-11 Israel’s watchmen are blind, they are all oblivious;…
Php 3:2 Watch out for those dogs, those workers of evil…

and prowling around the city.

They surrounded the city streets in search of David, treating him as prey. Though armed men controlled the approaches, David’s safety rested in the Lord rather than in the city’s defenses.

Lam 4:18 They stalked our every step, so that we could not walk…
Psa 55:10 Day and night they encircle the walls, while…
Jer 5:6 Therefore a lion from the forest will strike them down,…

See what they spew from their mouths—

David’s enemies pour out slander, threats, and lies as they surround him to take his life. Their speech exposes the violence and hatred within them.

Psa 10:7 His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and violence…
Pro 6:12 A worthless person, a wicked man, walks…
Psa 12:2 They lie to one another; they speak with flattering lips…

sharp words from their lips:

Their words are weapons, meant to injure David’s reputation and justify their murderous plans.

Psa 64:3 who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim…
Psa 57:4 My soul is among the lions; I lie down with ravenous beasts…
Pro 12:18 Speaking rashly is like a piercing sword,…

“For who can hear us?”

They assume no one will hold them accountable, forgetting that the Lord sees their schemes and hears every word spoken against His servant.

Psa 10:11 He says to himself, “God has forgotten; He hides His face…
Ezk 8:12 “Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see what the elders…
Psa 73:11 The wicked say, “How can God know?…

But You, O LORD, laugh at them;

God is neither alarmed nor threatened by the hostile nations surrounding His people. Their plots, armies, and boasts stand powerless before the Lord, whose rule over kings and kingdoms is absolute. His laughter expresses righteous contempt for rebellion that imagines it can overturn His purposes.

Psa 2:4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord taunts them.
Psa 37:13 but the Lord laughs, seeing that their day is coming.
Pro 1:26 in turn I will mock your calamity; I will sneer…

You scoff at all the nations.

The nations may appear strong in their own time, but their power is temporary and subject to God’s judgment. David’s confidence rests not in Israel’s military strength but in the Lord’s control of history. God will preserve His people and bring every proud power to account.

Psa 2:1-4 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?…
Psa 33:10 The LORD frustrates the plans of the nations;…
Isa 40:17 All the nations are as nothing before Him…

I will keep watch for You,

David waits with alert confidence for God’s response while enemies threaten him. Like a city watchman scanning the horizon for danger or relief, he remains attentive rather than trusting his own plans or defenses.

Psa 25:5 Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God…
Psa 130:5-6 I wait for the LORD; my soul does wait, and in His word…
Mic 7:7 But as for me, I will look to the LORD;…

O my strength,

God alone supplies the power David needs against forces beyond his ability to overcome. His security does not rest in military skill, allies, or position, but in the Lord’s sustaining strength.

Psa 18:1 For the choirmaster. Of David the servant of the LORD…
Exo 15:2 He is my God, and I will praise Him, my father’s God,…
Psa 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts…

because You, O God, are my fortress.

God is David’s secure refuge, stronger than the fortified cities that protected ancient Israel from attack. Though surrounded by hostile men, David regards the Lord as his dependable defender and safe stronghold.

Psa 18:2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.…
Psa 31:3 For You are my rock and my fortress; lead me and guide me…
Psa 144:2 He is my steadfast love and my fortress, my stronghold…

My God of loving devotion

David rests in God’s covenant faithfulness, claiming Him personally amid danger. The Lord’s steadfast care had sustained Israel from the patriarchs onward and remained sure despite David’s enemies.

Psa 103:8 The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger…
Psa 136:1 Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good.…
Psa 57:10 For Your loving devotion reaches to the heavens,…

will come to meet me;

God would act before David’s adversaries could destroy him. David had repeatedly experienced the Lord’s timely protection while fleeing Saul and facing hostile nations.

Deu 31:8 The LORD Himself goes before you; He will be with you.…
Isa 52:12 For you will not leave in a hurry nor flee in haste,…
Exo 23:20 Behold, I am sending an angel before you to protect you…

God will let me stare down my foes.

David expects God to give him victory and to expose the failure of those who oppose him. His confidence rests not in military strength, but in the Lord’s power to preserve His anointed servant.

Psa 118:7 The LORD is on my side; He is my helper.…
Psa 54:7 For He has delivered me from every trouble…
Psa 91:8 You will only see it with your eyes, and witness…

Do not kill them, or my people will forget.

David asks that his enemies remain as a visible reminder of God’s judgment rather than being swiftly destroyed. Israel’s history showed how easily the people forgot the Lord’s past acts of deliverance and discipline. Their continued defeat would testify that God sees and judges those who oppose Him.

Deu 6:12 be careful not to forget the LORD who brought you…
Psa 106:13 Yet they soon forgot His works and failed to wait…
Jos 4:6-7 to serve as a sign among you. In the future,…

Scatter them by Your power,

Rather than allowing his enemies to remain organized and strong, David asks God to disperse them and frustrate their plans. Their downfall would come through the Lord’s strength, not David’s military ability.

Deu 28:64 Then the LORD will scatter you among all the nations,…
Gen 11:8 So the LORD scattered them from there…

and bring them down,

God would humble those who acted proudly and violently against His servant. David trusts the Lord to remove their influence and overthrow their security.

Oba 1:4 Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest…
Isa 26:5 For He has humbled those who dwell on high;…

O Lord, our shield.

God is the defender of David and of His people. David looks to the Lord for protection against enemies who surround him.

Psa 33:20 Our soul waits for the LORD; He is our help and our shield.
Psa 115:9 O Israel, trust in the LORD! He is their help and shield.

By the sins of their mouths and the words of their lips,

David identifies the wicked by their corrupt speech. Their words expose hearts set against God and reveal the deceit, slander, and violence behind their opposition to the righteous.

Pro 12:13 An evil man is trapped by his rebellious speech…
Pro 10:19 When words are many, sin is unavoidable,…
Mat 12:36 But I tell you that men will give an account…

let them be trapped in their pride,

Their arrogance becomes the means of their downfall. Refusing humility and repentance, they become caught in the consequences of their own rebellion.

Pro 29:23 A man’s pride will bring him low, but a humble spirit…
Pro 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit…
Pro 11:2 When pride comes, disgrace follows, but with humility…

in the curses and lies they utter.

Their malicious oaths and deceptive words return upon them in righteous judgment. The evil they speak against others becomes a snare from which they cannot escape.

Psa 10:7 His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and violence…
Rom 3:13-14 Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit…
Psa 109:17 The cursing that he loved, may it fall on him;…

Consume them in wrath;

David appeals for God to judge those who persist in violent rebellion against Him and His anointed king. Their opposition is not merely personal hostility but defiance of God’s rule.

Exo 15:7 You overthrew Your adversaries by Your great majesty.…
Psa 21:9 You will place them in a fiery furnace…
Num 16:35 And fire came forth from the LORD and consumed the 250 men…

consume them till they are no more,

The repeated petition seeks a decisive end to the enemies’ power, preventing their wickedness from continuing to harm the innocent and corrupt the nation.

Psa 104:35 May sinners vanish from the earth and the wicked be no more.…
Isa 17:14 In the evening, there is sudden terror! Before morning…
Oba 1:18 Then the house of Jacob will be a blazing fire…

so it may be known to the ends of the earth

God’s judgment upon evil would reveal His holiness and power beyond Israel, showing every nation that He is not indifferent to injustice.

Psa 67:2 Your ways may be known on earth, Your salvation…
Isa 49:6 “It is not enough for You to be My Servant,”…
Psa 98:3 He has remembered His love and faithfulness…

that God rules over Jacob.

Israel belongs to the Lord by covenant, and He governs, protects, and disciplines His people as their true King. The downfall of their enemies would publicly confirm His authority over Jacob.

Psa 114:7 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord…
Psa 47:8 God reigns over the nations; God is seated on His throne…
Isa 24:23 The moon will be confounded and the sun will be ashamed;…

Selah

The pause calls for reflection on God’s righteous judgment and His sovereign rule over His people.

Hab 3:3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran.…
Hab 3:9 You brandished Your bow; You called for many arrows.…
Hab 3:13 You went forth for the salvation of Your people…

They return in the evening,

David’s enemies repeatedly renew their assault, using the cover of darkness to threaten the city. Their persistence reflects the danger surrounding him during Saul’s pursuit.

Psa 104:20-23 You bring darkness, and it becomes night…
Pro 7:9-10 at twilight, as the day was fading…

snarling like dogs

The enemies are portrayed as vicious, unrestrained scavengers, driven by hostility and contempt rather than justice.

Psa 22:16 For dogs surround me; a band of evil men encircles me;…
Isa 56:10-11 Israel’s watchmen are blind, they are all oblivious;…
Php 3:2 Watch out for those dogs, those workers of evil…

and prowling around the city.

They move about Jerusalem like a hostile pack seeking an opening to attack, but their efforts remain subject to God’s protection over David and the city.

Pro 7:11-12 She is loud and defiant; her feet do not remain at home.…
Jer 5:6 Therefore a lion from the forest will strike them down,…
Sng 3:2-3 I will arise now and go about the city, through the streets…

They scavenge for food,

Like hungry dogs roaming the city, David’s enemies are portrayed as restless, degraded, and dependent on whatever they can find. Their pursuit of David has not brought security or satisfaction.

Mat 15:27 “Yes, Lord,” she said, “even the dogs eat the crumbs”…
Job 24:5 Indeed, like wild donkeys in the desert, the poor go to work…
Psa 104:21 The young lions roar for their prey…

and growl if they are not satisfied.

Their hunger becomes angry discontent. Rather than turning from their violence, they remain hostile and unsettled, exposing the misery produced by their rebellion against God.

Isa 56:10-11 Israel’s watchmen are blind, they are all oblivious;…
Ecc 6:7 All a man’s labor is for his mouth, yet…
Pro 30:15-16 The leech has two daughters: Give and Give.…

But I will sing of Your strength

David, threatened by Saul’s men, turns from fear to praise. God’s power is greater than the violence and schemes of his enemies, and David trusts the Lord to act on his behalf.

Exo 15:2 He is my God, and I will praise Him, my father’s God,…
Psa 118:14 The LORD is my strength and my song, and He has become…
Psa 21:13 Be exalted, O LORD, in Your strength; we will sing…

and proclaim Your loving devotion in the morning.

After a night of danger, morning becomes a fitting time to declare God’s faithful mercy. David expects the Lord’s covenant love to remain constant and to bring renewed hope.

Psa 92:2 proclaim Your loving devotion in the morning…
Psa 90:14 Satisfy us in the morning with Your loving devotion,…
Psa 143:8 Let me hear Your loving devotion in the morning,…

For You are my fortress,

God had preserved David through repeated threats and pursuits. Like a fortified stronghold, the Lord provided security when no human defense could guarantee safety.

Psa 31:3 For You are my rock and my fortress; lead me and guide me…
Psa 18:2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.…
Psa 91:2 I will say to the LORD, “You are my refuge and my fortress…

my refuge in times of trouble.

David knew hardship, betrayal, and danger, yet he found shelter in God rather than in his own strength. The Lord remains a dependable refuge for those who call on Him in distress.

Psa 9:9 The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold…
Psa 46:1 For the choirmaster. Of the sons of Korah.…
Psa 62:8 Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts…

To You, O my strength, I sing praises,

David directs his worship to God, acknowledging that his ability to endure opposition comes from the Lord. Surrounded by enemies and threatened by Saul’s men, he responds not with despair but with praise, trusting God’s power to sustain him.

Psa 18:1 For the choirmaster. Of David the servant of the LORD…
Psa 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts…
Psa 21:13 Be exalted, O LORD, in Your strength; we will sing…

for You, O God, are my fortress,

God had preserved David through repeated dangers, providing refuge when human strength and security failed. A fortress was a place of protection during attack, expressing David’s confidence that the Lord would defend him from those seeking his life.

Psa 18:2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.…
Psa 91:2 I will say to the LORD, “You are my refuge and my fortress…
2Sa 22:2-3 He said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress…

my God of loving devotion.

David rests in God’s faithful covenant love. The Lord’s protection is not distant or uncertain; it flows from His enduring mercy toward those who belong to Him.

Psa 36:5 Your loving devotion, O LORD, reaches to the heavens,…
Psa 138:2 I bow down toward Your holy temple and give thanks…
Psa 103:17 But from everlasting to everlasting the loving devotion…
