1 Εἴ τις οὖν παράκλησις ἐν Χριστῷ εἴ τι παραμύθιον ἀγάπης εἴ τις κοινωνία Πνεύματος εἴ τις σπλάγχνα καὶ οἰκτιρμοί So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,
2 πληρώσατέ μου τὴν χαρὰν ἵνα τὸ αὐτὸ φρονῆτε τὴν αὐτὴν ἀγάπην ἔχοντες σύμψυχοι τὸ ἓν φρονοῦντες complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.
3 μηδὲν κατ’ ἐριθείαν μηδὲ κατὰ κενοδοξίαν ἀλλὰ τῇ ταπεινοφροσύνῃ ἀλλήλους ἡγούμενοι ὑπερέχοντας ἑαυτῶν Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,
4 μὴ τὰ ἑαυτῶν ἕκαστοι σκοποῦντες ἀλλὰ καὶ τὰ ἑτέρων ἕκαστοι Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
5 Τοῦτο φρονεῖτε ἐν ὑμῖν ὃ καὶ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6 Ὃς ἐν μορφῇ Θεοῦ ὑπάρχων οὐχ ἁρπαγμὸν ἡγήσατο τὸ εἶναι ἴσα Θεῷ who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 ἀλλὰ ἑαυτὸν ἐκένωσεν μορφὴν δούλου λαβών ἐν ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων γενόμενος but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
8 καὶ σχήματι εὑρεθεὶς ὡς ἄνθρωπος ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτὸν γενόμενος ὑπήκοος μέχρι θανάτου θανάτου δὲ σταυροῦ And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!
9 Διὸ καὶ ὁ Θεὸς αὐτὸν ὑπερύψωσεν καὶ ἐχαρίσατο αὐτῷ τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομα Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 ἵνα ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ πᾶν γόνυ κάμψῃ ἐπουρανίων καὶ ἐπιγείων καὶ καταχθονίων so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 καὶ πᾶσα γλῶσσα ἐξομολογήσηται ὅτι ΚΥΡΙΟΣ ΙΗΣΟΥΣ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ Πατρός and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
12 Ὥστε ἀγαπητοί μου καθὼς πάντοτε ὑπηκούσατε μὴ ὡς ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ μου μόνον ἀλλὰ νῦν πολλῷ μᾶλλον ἐν τῇ ἀπουσίᾳ μου μετὰ φόβου καὶ τρόμου τὴν ἑαυτῶν σωτηρίαν κατεργάζεσθε Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,
13 Θεὸς γάρ ἐστιν ὁ ἐνεργῶν ἐν ὑμῖν καὶ τὸ θέλειν καὶ τὸ ἐνεργεῖν ὑπὲρ τῆς εὐδοκίας for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
14 Πάντα ποιεῖτε χωρὶς γογγυσμῶν καὶ διαλογισμῶν Do all things without grumbling or disputing, Do everything without grumbling or arguing,
15 ἵνα γένησθε ἄμεμπτοι καὶ ἀκέραιοι τέκνα Θεοῦ ἄμωμα μέσον γενεᾶς σκολιᾶς καὶ διεστραμμένης ἐν οἷς φαίνεσθε ὡς φωστῆρες ἐν κόσμῳ that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky
16 λόγον ζωῆς ἐπέχοντες εἰς καύχημα ἐμοὶ εἰς ἡμέραν Χριστοῦ ὅτι οὐκ εἰς κενὸν ἔδραμον οὐδὲ εἰς κενὸν ἐκοπίασα holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.
17 Ἀλλὰ εἰ καὶ σπένδομαι ἐπὶ τῇ θυσίᾳ καὶ λειτουργίᾳ τῆς πίστεως ὑμῶν χαίρω καὶ συνχαίρω πᾶσιν ὑμῖν Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you.
18 τὸ δὲ αὐτὸ καὶ ὑμεῖς χαίρετε καὶ συνχαίρετέ μοι Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me. So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.
19 Ἐλπίζω δὲ ἐν Κυρίῳ Ἰησοῦ Τιμόθεον ταχέως πέμψαι ὑμῖν ἵνα κἀγὼ εὐψυχῶ γνοὺς τὰ περὶ ὑμῶν I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I too may be cheered by news of you. I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you.
20 οὐδένα γὰρ ἔχω ἰσόψυχον ὅστις γνησίως τὰ περὶ ὑμῶν μεριμνήσει For I have no one like him, who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare. I have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare.
21 οἱ πάντες γὰρ τὰ ἑαυτῶν ζητοῦσιν οὐ τὰ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.
22 τὴν δὲ δοκιμὴν αὐτοῦ γινώσκετε ὅτι ὡς πατρὶ τέκνον σὺν ἐμοὶ ἐδούλευσεν εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον But you know Timothy’s proven worth, how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel. But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel.
23 Τοῦτον μὲν οὖν ἐλπίζω πέμψαι ὡς ἂν ἀφίδω τὰ περὶ ἐμὲ ἐξαυτῆς I hope therefore to send him just as soon as I see how it will go with me, I hope, therefore, to send him as soon as I see how things go with me.
24 πέποιθα δὲ ἐν Κυρίῳ ὅτι καὶ αὐτὸς ταχέως ἐλεύσομαι and I trust in the Lord that shortly I myself will come also. And I am confident in the Lord that I myself will come soon.
25 Ἀναγκαῖον δὲ ἡγησάμην Ἐπαφρόδιτον τὸν ἀδελφὸν καὶ συνεργὸν καὶ συστρατιώτην μου ὑμῶν δὲ ἀπόστολον καὶ λειτουργὸν τῆς χρείας μου πέμψαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς I have thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, and your messenger and minister to my need, But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co-worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs.
26 ἐπειδὴ ἐπιποθῶν ἦν πάντας ὑμᾶς (ἰδεῖν) καὶ ἀδημονῶν διότι ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἠσθένησεν for he has been longing for you all and has been distressed because you heard that he was ill. For he longs for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill.
27 καὶ γὰρ ἠσθένησεν παραπλήσιον θανάτῳ ἀλλὰ ὁ Θεὸς ἠλέησεν αὐτόν οὐκ αὐτὸν δὲ μόνον ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐμέ ἵνα μὴ λύπην ἐπὶ λύπην σχῶ Indeed he was ill, near to death. But God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow.
28 Σπουδαιοτέρως οὖν ἔπεμψα αὐτὸν ἵνα ἰδόντες αὐτὸν πάλιν χαρῆτε κἀγὼ ἀλυπότερος ὦ I am the more eager to send him, therefore, that you may rejoice at seeing him again, and that I may be less anxious. Therefore I am all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less anxiety.
29 προσδέχεσθε οὖν αὐτὸν ἐν Κυρίῳ μετὰ πάσης χαρᾶς καὶ τοὺς τοιούτους ἐντίμους ἔχετε So receive him in the Lord with all joy, and honor such men, So then, welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor people like him,
30 ὅτι διὰ τὸ ἔργον Χριστοῦ μέχρι θανάτου ἤγγισεν παραβολευσάμενος τῇ ψυχῇ ἵνα ἀναπληρώσῃ τὸ ὑμῶν ὑστέρημα τῆς πρός με λειτουργίας for he nearly died for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was lacking in your service to me. because he almost died for the work of Christ. He risked his life to make up for the help you yourselves could not give me.
