1But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

1Ἰησοῦς δὲ ἐπορεύθη εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῶν ἐλαιῶν

2Early in the morning he came to the temple courts again. All the people came to him, and he sat down and began to teach them.

2Ὄρθρου δὲ πάλιν παρεγένετο εἰς τὸ ἱερόν καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ἤρχετο πρὸς αὐτόν καὶ καθίσας ἐδίδασκεν αὐτούς

3The experts in the law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught committing adultery. They made her stand in front of them

3ἄγουσιν* δὲ οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι 〈πρὸς αὐτὸν〉 γυναῖκα ἐπὶ* μοιχείᾳ κατειλημμένην καὶ στήσαντες αὐτὴν ἐν μέσῳ

4and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of adultery.

4λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Διδάσκαλε αὕτη ἡ γυνὴ κατείληπται* ἐπ’* αυτοφώρῳ* μοιχευομένη

5In the law Moses commanded us to stone to death such women. What then do you say?"

5ἐν δὲ τῷ νόμῳ Μωϋσῆς* ἡμῖν ἐνετείλατο τὰς τοιαύτας λιθάζειν* σὺ οὖν τί λέγεις

6(Now they were asking this in an attempt to trap him, so that they could bring charges against him.) Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground with his finger.

6Τοῦτο δὲ ἔλεγον πειράζοντες αὐτόν ἵνα ἔχωσιν* κατηγορεῖν αὐτοῦ ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς κάτω κύψας τῷ δακτύλῳ κατέγραφεν* εἰς τὴν γῆν

7When they persisted in asking him, he stood up straight and replied, "Whoever among you is guiltless may be the first to throw a stone at her."

7Ὡς δὲ ἐπέμενον ἐρωτῶντες αὐτόν [ἀνέκυψεν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς] Ὁ ἀναμάρτητος ὑμῶν πρῶτος 〈τὸν〉 λίθον «ἐπ’ αὐτῇ βαλέτω»

8Then he bent over again and wrote on the ground.

8καὶ πάλιν κάτω¦κύψας ἔγραφεν εἰς τὴν γῆν

9Now when they heard this, they began to drift away one at a time, starting with the older ones, until Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.

9Οἱ δὲ ἀκούσαντες 〈καὶ ὑπὸ τῆς συνειδήσεως ἐλεγχόμενοι〉 ἐξήρχοντο εἷς καθ‿ εἷς ἀρξάμενοι ἀπὸ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων 〈ἕως τῶν ἐσχάτων〉 καὶ κατελείφθη μόνος 〈ὁ Ἰησοῦς〉 καὶ ἡ γυνὴ ἐν μέσῳ οὖσα*

10Jesus stood up straight and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?"

10ἀνακύψας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς 〈καὶ μηδένα θεασάμενος πλὴν τὴς γυναικὸς〉 εἶπεν αὐτῇ 〈Ἡ〉 Γύναι* ποῦ εἰσιν 〈ἐκεῖνοι οἱ κατήγοροί σου〉 οὐδείς σε κατέκρινεν

11She replied, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "I do not condemn you either. Go, and from now on do not sin any more."]]

11Ἡ δὲ εἶπεν Οὐδείς κύριε Εἶπεν* δὲ 〈αὐτῇ〉 ὁ Ἰησοῦς Οὐδὲ ἐγώ σε κατακρίνω πορεύου καὶ [ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν] μηκέτι ἁμάρτανε

12Then Jesus spoke out again, "I am the light of the world. The one who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

12Πάλιν οὖν αὐτοῖς ἐλάλησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγων Ἐγώ εἰμι τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου ὁ ἀκολουθῶν ἐμοὶ* οὐ μὴ περιπατήσῃ ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ ἀλλ’ ἕξει τὸ φῶς τῆς ζωῆς

13So the Pharisees objected, "You testify about yourself; your testimony is not true!"

13Εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι Σὺ περὶ σεαυτοῦ μαρτυρεῖς ἡ μαρτυρία σου οὐκ ἔστιν ἀληθής

14Jesus answered, "Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you people do not know where I came from or where I am going.

14Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Κἂν ἐγὼ μαρτυρῶ περὶ ἐμαυτοῦ ἀληθής ἐστιν ἡ μαρτυρία μου ὅτι οἶδα πόθεν ἦλθον καὶ ποῦ ὑπάγω ὑμεῖς δὲ οὐκ οἴδατε πόθεν ἔρχομαι ἢ ποῦ ὑπάγω

15You people judge by outward appearances; I do not judge anyone.

15Ὑμεῖς κατὰ τὴν σάρκα κρίνετε ἐγὼ οὐ κρίνω οὐδένα

16But if I judge, my evaluation is accurate, because I am not alone when I judge, but I and the Father who sent me do so together.

16καὶ ἐὰν κρίνω δὲ ἐγώ ἡ κρίσις ἡ ἐμὴ ἀληθινή ἐστιν ὅτι μόνος οὐκ εἰμί ἀλλ’ ἐγὼ καὶ ὁ πέμψας με ‹πατήρ›

17It is written in your law that the testimony of two men is true.

17Καὶ ἐν τῷ νόμῳ δὲ τῷ ὑμετέρῳ γέγραπται ὅτι δύο ἀνθρώπων ἡ μαρτυρία ἀληθής ἐστιν

18I testify about myself and the Father who sent me testifies about me."

18ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ μαρτυρῶν περὶ ἐμαυτοῦ καὶ μαρτυρεῖ περὶ ἐμοῦ ὁ πέμψας με Πατήρ

19Then they began asking him, "Who is your father?" Jesus answered, "You do not know either me or my Father. If you knew me you would know my Father too."

19Ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ Ποῦ ἐστιν ὁ Πατήρ σου Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Οὔτε ἐμὲ οἴδατε οὔτε τὸν Πατέρα μου εἰ ἐμὲ ᾔδειτε καὶ τὸν Πατέρα μου ἂν ᾔδειτε

20(Jesus spoke these words near the offering box while he was teaching in the temple courts. No one seized him because his time had not yet come.)

20Ταῦτα τὰ ῥήματα ἐλάλησεν ἐν τῷ γαζοφυλακίῳ διδάσκων ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐπίασεν αὐτόν ὅτι οὔπω ἐληλύθει ἡ ὥρα αὐτοῦ

21Then Jesus said to them again, "I am going away, and you will look for me but will die in your sin. Where I am going you cannot come."

21Εἶπεν οὖν πάλιν αὐτοῖς Ἐγὼ ὑπάγω καὶ ζητήσετέ με καὶ ἐν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ ὑμῶν ἀποθανεῖσθε ὅπου ἐγὼ ὑπάγω ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν

22So the Jewish leaders began to say, "Perhaps he is going to kill himself, because he says, 'Where I am going you cannot come.'"

22Ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι Μήτι ἀποκτενεῖ ἑαυτὸν ὅτι λέγει Ὅπου ἐγὼ ὑπάγω ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν

23Jesus replied, "You people are from below; I am from above. You people are from this world; I am not from this world.

23Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Ὑμεῖς ἐκ τῶν κάτω ἐστέ ἐγὼ ἐκ τῶν ἄνω εἰμί ὑμεῖς ἐκ τούτου τοῦ κόσμου ἐστέ ἐγὼ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου

24Thus I told you that you will die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins."

24εἶπον οὖν ὑμῖν ὅτι ἀποθανεῖσθε ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ὑμῶν ἐὰν γὰρ μὴ πιστεύσητε ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι ἀποθανεῖσθε ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ὑμῶν

25So they said to him, "Who are you?" Jesus replied, "What I have told you from the beginning.

25Ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ Σὺ τίς εἶ Εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Τὴν ἀρχὴν ὅ¦τι καὶ λαλῶ ὑμῖν

26I have many things to say and to judge about you, but the Father who sent me is truthful, and the things I have heard from him I speak to the world."

26πολλὰ ἔχω περὶ ὑμῶν λαλεῖν καὶ κρίνειν ἀλλ’ ὁ πέμψας με ἀληθής ἐστιν κἀγὼ ἃ ἤκουσα παρ’ αὐτοῦ ταῦτα λαλῶ εἰς τὸν κόσμον

27(They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.)

27Οὐκ ἔγνωσαν ὅτι τὸν Πατέρα αὐτοῖς ἔλεγεν

28Then Jesus said, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing on my own initiative, but I speak just what the Father taught me.

28εἶπεν οὖν [αὐτοῖς] ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ὅταν ὑψώσητε τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τότε γνώσεσθε ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι καὶ ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ ποιῶ οὐδέν ἀλλὰ καθὼς ἐδίδαξέν με ὁ Πατὴρ ταῦτα λαλῶ

29And the one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do those things that please him."

29καὶ ὁ πέμψας με μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐστιν οὐκ ἀφῆκέν με μόνον ὅτι ἐγὼ τὰ ἀρεστὰ αὐτῷ ποιῶ πάντοτε

30While he was saying these things, many people believed in him.

30Ταῦτα αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν

31Then Jesus said to those Judeans who had believed him, "If you continue to follow my teaching, you are really my disciples

31Ἔλεγεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς πρὸς τοὺς πεπιστευκότας αὐτῷ Ἰουδαίους Ἐὰν ὑμεῖς μείνητε ἐν τῷ λόγῳ τῷ ἐμῷ ἀληθῶς μαθηταί μού ἐστε

32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

32καὶ γνώσεσθε τὴν ἀλήθειαν καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια ἐλευθερώσει ὑμᾶς

33"We are descendants of Abraham," they replied, "and have never been anyone's slaves! How can you say, 'You will become free'?"

33Ἀπεκρίθησαν πρὸς αὐτόν Σπέρμα Ἀβραάμ ἐσμεν καὶ οὐδενὶ δεδουλεύκαμεν πώποτε πῶς σὺ λέγεις ὅτι Ἐλεύθεροι γενήσεσθε

34Jesus answered them, "I tell you the solemn truth, everyone who practices sin is a slave of sin.

34Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ποιῶν τὴν ἁμαρτίαν δοῦλός ἐστιν τῆς ἁμαρτίας

35The slave does not remain in the family forever, but the son remains forever.

35ὁ δὲ δοῦλος οὐ μένει ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ὁ υἱὸς μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα

36So if the son sets you free, you will be really free.

36ἐὰν οὖν ὁ Υἱὸς ὑμᾶς ἐλευθερώσῃ ὄντως ἐλεύθεροι ἔσεσθε

37I know that you are Abraham's descendants. But you want to kill me, because my teaching makes no progress among you.

37Οἶδα ὅτι σπέρμα Ἀβραάμ ἐστε ἀλλὰ ζητεῖτέ με ἀποκτεῖναι ὅτι ὁ λόγος ὁ ἐμὸς οὐ χωρεῖ ἐν ὑμῖν

38I am telling you the things I have seen while with the Father; as for you, practice the things you have heard from the Father!"

38ἃ ἐγὼ ἑώρακα παρὰ τῷ Πατρὶ λαλῶ καὶ ὑμεῖς οὖν ἃ ἠκούσατε παρὰ τοῦ πατρὸς ποιεῖτε

39They answered him, "Abraham is our father!" Jesus replied, "If you are Abraham's children, you would be doing the deeds of Abraham.

39Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ὁ πατὴρ ἡμῶν Ἀβραάμ ἐστιν Λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Εἰ τέκνα τοῦ Ἀβραάμ ἐστε τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Ἀβραὰμ ἐποιεῖτε*

40But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth I heard from God. Abraham did not do this!

40νῦν δὲ ζητεῖτέ με ἀποκτεῖναι ἄνθρωπον ὃς τὴν ἀλήθειαν ὑμῖν λελάληκα ἣν ἤκουσα παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦτο Ἀβραὰμ οὐκ ἐποίησεν

41You people are doing the deeds of your father." Then they said to Jesus, "We were not born as a result of immorality! We have only one Father, God himself."

41ὑμεῖς ποιεῖτε τὰ ἔργα τοῦ πατρὸς ὑμῶν Εἶπαν [οὖν] αὐτῷ Ἡμεῖς ἐκ πορνείας ‹οὐ γεγεννήμεθα› ἕνα Πατέρα ἔχομεν τὸν Θεόν

42Jesus replied, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come from God and am now here. I have not come on my own initiative, but he sent me.

42Εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Εἰ ὁ Θεὸς Πατὴρ ὑμῶν ἦν ἠγαπᾶτε ἂν ἐμέ ἐγὼ γὰρ ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐξῆλθον καὶ ἥκω οὐδὲ γὰρ ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ ἐλήλυθα ἀλλ’ ἐκεῖνός με ἀπέστειλεν

43Why don't you understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot accept my teaching.

43Διὰ τί τὴν λαλιὰν τὴν ἐμὴν οὐ γινώσκετε ὅτι οὐ δύνασθε ἀκούειν τὸν λόγον τὸν ἐμόν

44You people are from your father the devil, and you want to do what your father desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.

44ὑμεῖς ἐκ τοῦ πατρὸς τοῦ διαβόλου ἐστὲ καὶ τὰς ἐπιθυμίας τοῦ πατρὸς ὑμῶν θέλετε ποιεῖν ἐκεῖνος ἀνθρωποκτόνος ἦν ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀληθείᾳ οὐκ ἔστηκεν ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ἀλήθεια ἐν αὐτῷ ὅταν λαλῇ τὸ ψεῦδος ἐκ τῶν ἰδίων λαλεῖ ὅτι ψεύστης ἐστὶν καὶ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ

45But because I am telling you the truth, you do not believe me.

45ἐγὼ δὲ ὅτι τὴν ἀλήθειαν λέγω οὐ πιστεύετέ μοι

46Who among you can prove me guilty of any sin? If I am telling you the truth, why don't you believe me?

46Τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐλέγχει με περὶ ἁμαρτίας εἰ ἀλήθειαν λέγω διὰ τί ὑμεῖς οὐ πιστεύετέ μοι

47The one who belongs to God listens and responds to God's words. You don't listen and respond, because you don't belong to God."

47ὁ ὢν ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ τὰ ῥήματα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀκούει διὰ τοῦτο ὑμεῖς οὐκ ἀκούετε ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ οὐκ ἐστέ

48The Judeans replied, "Aren't we correct in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?"

48Ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Οὐ καλῶς λέγομεν ἡμεῖς ὅτι Σαμαρίτης εἶ σὺ καὶ δαιμόνιον ἔχεις

49Jesus answered, "I am not possessed by a demon, but I honor my Father--and yet you dishonor me.

49Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Ἐγὼ δαιμόνιον οὐκ ἔχω ἀλλὰ τιμῶ τὸν Πατέρα μου καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀτιμάζετέ με

50I am not trying to get praise for myself. There is one who demands it, and he also judges.

50ἐγὼ δὲ οὐ ζητῶ τὴν δόξαν μου ἔστιν ὁ ζητῶν καὶ κρίνων

51I tell you the solemn truth, if anyone obeys my teaching, he will never see death."

51ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἐάν τις τὸν ἐμὸν λόγον τηρήσῃ θάνατον οὐ μὴ θεωρήσῃ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα

52Then the Judeans responded, "Now we know you're possessed by a demon! Both Abraham and the prophets died, and yet you say, 'If anyone obeys my teaching, he will never experience death.'

52[Εἶπον οὖν] αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι Νῦν ἐγνώκαμεν ὅτι δαιμόνιον ἔχεις Ἀβραὰμ ἀπέθανεν καὶ οἱ προφῆται καὶ σὺ λέγεις Ἐάν τις τὸν λόγον μου τηρήσῃ οὐ μὴ γεύσηται θανάτου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα

53You aren't greater than our father Abraham who died, are you? And the prophets died too! Who do you claim to be?"

53μὴ σὺ μείζων εἶ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν Ἀβραάμ ὅστις ἀπέθανεν καὶ οἱ προφῆται ἀπέθανον τίνα σεαυτὸν ποιεῖς

54Jesus replied, "If I glorify myself, my glory is worthless. The one who glorifies me is my Father, about whom you people say, 'He is our God.'

54Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Ἐὰν ἐγὼ δοξάσω ἐμαυτόν ἡ δόξα μου οὐδέν ἐστιν ἔστιν ὁ Πατήρ μου ὁ δοξάζων με ὃν ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι Θεὸς ἡμῶν ἐστιν

55Yet you do not know him, but I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him, and I obey his teaching.

55καὶ οὐκ ἐγνώκατε αὐτόν ἐγὼ δὲ οἶδα αὐτόν κἂν εἴπω ὅτι οὐκ οἶδα αὐτόν ἔσομαι ὅμοιος ὑμῖν ψεύστης ἀλλὰ οἶδα αὐτὸν καὶ τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ τηρῶ

56Your father Abraham was overjoyed to see my day, and he saw it and was glad."

56Ἀβραὰμ ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ἠγαλλιάσατο ἵνα ἴδῃ τὴν ἡμέραν τὴν ἐμήν καὶ εἶδεν καὶ ἐχάρη

57Then the Judeans replied, "You are not yet fifty years old! Have you seen Abraham?"

57Εἶπον* οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πρὸς αὐτόν Πεντήκοντα ἔτη οὔπω ἔχεις καὶ Ἀβραὰμ ἑώρακας

58Jesus said to them, "I tell you the solemn truth, before Abraham came into existence, I am!"

58Εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν πρὶν Ἀβραὰμ γενέσθαι ἐγὼ εἰμί

59Then they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out from the temple area.

59Ἦραν οὖν λίθους ἵνα βάλωσιν ἐπ’ αὐτόν Ἰησοῦς δὲ ἐκρύβη καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἐκ τοῦ ἱεροῦ ⧼διελθὼν διὰ μέσου αὐτῶν καὶ παρῆγεν οὕτως⧽
