Jacob Flees from Laban

1 וַיִּשְׁמַ֗ע (And Jacob heard) אֶת־ (-) דִּבְרֵ֤י (the words) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) לָבָן֙ (of Laban), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), לָקַ֣ח (Has taken away) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (Jacob) אֵ֖ת (-) כָּל־ (everything) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) לְאָבִ֑ינוּ (belonged to our father), וּמֵאֲשֶׁ֣ר (and from what) לְאָבִ֔ינוּ (belonged to our father) עָשָׂ֕ה (he has made) אֵ֥ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַכָּבֹ֖ד (the wealth) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

2 וַיַּ֥רְא (And saw) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob) אֶת־ (-) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) לָבָ֑ן (of Laban), וְהִנֵּ֥ה (and behold), אֵינֶ֛נּוּ (it was not) עִמּ֖וֹ (with him) כִּתְמ֥וֹל (as yesterday) שִׁלְשֽׁוֹם׃ (and the day before yesterday).

3 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶֽל־ (to) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (Jacob), שׁ֛וּב (Return) אֶל־ (to) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) אֲבוֹתֶ֖יךָ (of your fathers), וּלְמוֹלַדְתֶּ֑ךָ (and to your kindred), וְאֶֽהְיֶ֖ה (and I will be) עִמָּֽךְ׃ (with you).

4 וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח (And sent) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (Jacob), וַיִּקְרָ֖א (and called) לְרָחֵ֣ל (for Rachel) וּלְלֵאָ֑ה (and for Leah) הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה (to the field) אֶל־ (to) צֹאנֽוֹ׃ (his flock),

5 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and he said) לָהֶ֗ן (to them), רֹאֶ֤ה (Can see) אָנֹכִי֙ (I) אֶת־ (-) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) אֲבִיכֶ֔ן (of your⁺ father), כִּֽי־ (that it is) אֵינֶ֥נּוּ (not) אֵלַ֖י (toward me) כִּתְמֹ֣ל (as yesterday) שִׁלְשֹׁ֑ם (and the day before yesterday). וֵֽאלֹהֵ֣י (And the God) אָבִ֔י (of my father) הָיָ֖ה (has been) עִמָּדִֽי׃ (with me).

6 וְאַתֵּ֖נָה (And you⁺) יְדַעְתֶּ֑ן (know) כִּ֚י (that) בְּכָל־ (with all) כֹּחִ֔י (my strength) עָבַ֖דְתִּי (I have served) אֶת־ (-) אֲבִיכֶֽן׃ (your⁺ father).

7 וַאֲבִיכֶן֙ (And your⁺ father) הֵ֣תֶל (has deceived) בִּ֔י (me) וְהֶחֱלִ֥ף (and has changed) אֶת־ (-) מַשְׂכֻּרְתִּ֖י (my wage) עֲשֶׂ֣רֶת (ten) מֹנִ֑ים (times); וְלֹֽא־ (and not) נְתָנ֣וֹ (did allow him) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God) לְהָרַ֖ע (to do evil) עִמָּדִֽי׃ (with me).

8 אִם־ (If) כֹּ֣ה (thus) יֹאמַ֗ר (he said), נְקֻדִּים֙ (The speckled) יִהְיֶ֣ה (shall be) שְׂכָרֶ֔ךָ (your wage), וְיָלְד֥וּ (and bore) כָל־ (all) הַצֹּ֖אן (the flock) נְקֻדִּ֑ים (speckled); וְאִם־ (and if) כֹּ֣ה (thus) יֹאמַ֗ר (he said), עֲקֻדִּים֙ (The striped) יִהְיֶ֣ה (shall be) שְׂכָרֶ֔ךָ (your wage), וְיָלְד֥וּ (and bore) כָל־ (all) הַצֹּ֖אן (the flock) עֲקֻדִּֽים׃ (stripes).

9 וַיַּצֵּ֧ל (And has snatched away) אֱלֹהִ֛ים (God) אֶת־ (-) מִקְנֵ֥ה (the livestock) אֲבִיכֶ֖ם (of your⁺ father), וַיִּתֶּן־ (and gave them) לִֽי׃ (to me).

10 וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass) בְּעֵת֙ (at the time) יַחֵ֣ם (was conceiving) הַצֹּ֔אן (the flock), וָאֶשָּׂ֥א (that I lifted) עֵינַ֛י (my eyes) וָאֵ֖רֶא (and saw) בַּחֲל֑וֹם (in the dream), וְהִנֵּ֤ה (and behold), הָֽעַתֻּדִים֙ (the male goats) הָעֹלִ֣ים (going up) עַל־ (on) הַצֹּ֔אן (the flock) עֲקֻדִּ֥ים (were striped), נְקֻדִּ֖ים (speckled), וּבְרֻדִּֽים׃ (and spotted).

11 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) אֵלַ֜י (to me) מַלְאַ֧ךְ (the angel) הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים (of God) בַּחֲל֖וֹם (in the dream), יַֽעֲקֹ֑ב (Jacob)! וָאֹמַ֖ר (And I said), הִנֵּֽנִי׃ (Behold, it is I).

12 וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And He said), שָׂא־ (Lift up) נָ֨א (now) עֵינֶ֤יךָ (your eyes) וּרְאֵה֙ (and see), כָּל־ (all) הָֽעַתֻּדִים֙ (the he-goats) הָעֹלִ֣ים (going up) עַל־ (on) הַצֹּ֔אן (the flock) עֲקֻדִּ֥ים (are striped), נְקֻדִּ֖ים (speckled), וּבְרֻדִּ֑ים (and spotted); כִּ֣י (for) רָאִ֔יתִי (I have seen) אֵ֛ת (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) לָבָ֖ן (Laban) עֹ֥שֶׂה (is doing) לָּֽךְ׃ (to you).

13 אָנֹכִ֤י (I am) הָאֵל֙ (the God) בֵּֽית־ (of Beth-) אֵ֔ל (el), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (where) מָשַׁ֤חְתָּ (you anointed) שָּׁם֙ (-) מַצֵּבָ֔ה (a pillar), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (where) נָדַ֥רְתָּ (you vowed) לִּ֛י (to Me) שָׁ֖ם (-) נֶ֑דֶר (a vow). עַתָּ֗ה (Now) ק֥וּם (arise), צֵא֙ (go out) מִן־ (from) הָאָ֣רֶץ (the land) הַזֹּ֔את (this), וְשׁ֖וּב (and return) אֶל־ (to) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מוֹלַדְתֶּֽךָ׃ (of your birth).

14 וַתַּ֤עַן (And answered) רָחֵל֙ (Rachel) וְלֵאָ֔ה (and Leah), וַתֹּאמַ֖רְנָה (and they said) ל֑וֹ (to him), הַע֥וֹד (Is there still) לָ֛נוּ (for us) חֵ֥לֶק (a portion) וְנַחֲלָ֖ה (and an inheritance) בְּבֵ֥ית (in the house) אָבִֽינוּ׃ (of our father)?

15 הֲל֧וֹא (Are not) נָכְרִיּ֛וֹת (strangers) נֶחְשַׁ֥בְנוּ (we considered) ל֖וֹ (by him), כִּ֣י (for) מְכָרָ֑נוּ (he has sold us), וַיֹּ֥אכַל (and he has eaten) גַּם־ (indeed) אָכ֖וֹל (eating) אֶת־ (-) כַּסְפֵּֽנוּ׃ (our silver).

16 כִּ֣י (For) כָל־ (all) הָעֹ֗שֶׁר (the riches) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) הִצִּ֤יל (has snatched away) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) מֵֽאָבִ֔ינוּ (from our father), לָ֥נוּ (ours) ה֖וּא (are) וּלְבָנֵ֑ינוּ (and our children’s). וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) כֹּל֩ (all) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) אָמַ֧ר (has said) אֱלֹהִ֛ים (God) אֵלֶ֖יךָ (to you), עֲשֵֽׂה׃ (do).

17 וַיָּ֖קָם (And rose) יַעֲקֹ֑ב (Jacob) וַיִּשָּׂ֛א (and lifted) אֶת־ (-) בָּנָ֥יו (his sons) וְאֶת־ (and) נָשָׁ֖יו (his wives) עַל־ (on) הַגְּמַלִּֽים׃ (the camels),

18 וַיִּנְהַ֣ג (and he drove) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) מִקְנֵ֗הוּ (his livestock), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) רְכֻשׁוֹ֙ (his possessions) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) רָכָ֔שׁ (he had gotten), מִקְנֵה֙ (the livestock) קִנְיָנ֔וֹ (of his acquiring) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) רָכַ֖שׁ (he had gotten) בְּפַדַּ֣ן (in Paddan-) אֲרָ֑ם (aram), לָב֛וֹא (to go) אֶל־ (to) יִצְחָ֥ק (Isaac) אָבִ֖יו (his father) אַ֥רְצָה (in the land) כְּנָֽעַן׃ (of Canaan).

19 וְלָבָ֣ן (And Laban) הָלַ֔ךְ (had gone) לִגְזֹ֖ז (to shear) אֶת־ (-) צֹאנ֑וֹ (his sheep), וַתִּגְנֹ֣ב (and stole) רָחֵ֔ל (Rachel) אֶת־ (-) הַתְּרָפִ֖ים (the teraphim) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) לְאָבִֽיהָ׃ (belonged to her father).

20 וַיִּגְנֹ֣ב (And stole) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (Jacob) אֶת־ (-) לֵ֥ב (the heart) לָבָ֖ן (of Laban) הָאֲרַמִּ֑י (the Aramaean), עַל־ (by) בְּלִי֙ (not) הִגִּ֣יד (telling) ל֔וֹ (him) כִּ֥י (that) בֹרֵ֖חַ (was fleeing) הֽוּא׃ (he).

21 וַיִּבְרַ֥ח (And he fled) הוּא֙ (he) וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that was) ל֔וֹ (unto him), וַיָּ֖קָם (and He rose) וַיַּעֲבֹ֣ר (and he passed over) אֶת־ (-) הַנָּהָ֑ר (the River) וַיָּ֥שֶׂם (and set) אֶת־ (-) פָּנָ֖יו (his face) הַ֥ר (toward the hill country) הַגִּלְעָֽד׃ (of Gilead).

22 וַיֻּגַּ֥ד (And it was told) לְלָבָ֖ן (to Laban) Laban Pursues Jacobבַּיּ֣וֹם (day) הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֑י (on the third) כִּ֥י (that) בָרַ֖ח (had fled) יַעֲקֹֽב׃ (Jacob).

23 וַיִּקַּ֤ח (And he took) אֶת־ (-) אֶחָיו֙ (his brothers) עִמּ֔וֹ (with him) וַיִּרְדֹּ֣ף (and pursued) אַחֲרָ֔יו (after him) דֶּ֖רֶךְ (a journey) שִׁבְעַ֣ת (of seven) יָמִ֑ים (days), וַיַּדְבֵּ֥ק (and he overtook) אֹת֖וֹ (him) בְּהַ֥ר (in the hill country) הַגִּלְעָֽד׃ (of the Gilead).

24 וַיָּבֹ֧א (And came) אֱלֹהִ֛ים (God) אֶל־ (to) לָבָ֥ן (Laban) הָאֲרַמִּ֖י (the Aramaean) בַּחֲלֹ֣ם (in a dream) הַלָּ֑יְלָה (of the night), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) ל֗וֹ (to him), הִשָּׁ֧מֶר (Guard) לְךָ֛ (yourself) פֶּן־ (lest) תְּדַבֵּ֥ר (you speak) עִֽם־ (to) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob), מִטּ֥וֹב (from good) עַד־ (to) רָֽע׃ (evil).

25 וַיַּשֵּׂ֥ג (And overtook) לָבָ֖ן (Laban) אֶֽת־ (-) יַעֲקֹ֑ב (Jacob). וְיַעֲקֹ֗ב (And Jacob) תָּקַ֤ע (had pitched) אֶֽת־ (-) אָהֳלוֹ֙ (his tent) בָּהָ֔ר (in the hill country), וְלָבָ֛ן (and Laban) תָּקַ֥ע (pitched his tent) אֶת־ (with) אֶחָ֖יו (his brothers) בְּהַ֥ר (in the hill country) הַגִּלְעָֽד׃ (of Gilead).

26 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) לָבָן֙ (Laban) לְיַעֲקֹ֔ב (to Jacob), מֶ֣ה (What) עָשִׂ֔יתָ (have you done), וַתִּגְנֹ֖ב (and you have stolen) אֶת־ (-) לְבָבִ֑י (my heart) וַתְּנַהֵג֙ (and you have driven) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֹתַ֔י (my daughters) כִּשְׁבֻי֖וֹת (like captives) חָֽרֶב׃ (of the sword)?

27 לָ֤מָּה (Why) נַחְבֵּ֙אתָ֙ (have you fled) לִבְרֹ֔חַ (secretly) וַתִּגְנֹ֖ב (and stolen) אֹתִ֑י (from me), וְלֹא־ (and not) הִגַּ֣דְתָּ (told) לִּ֔י (me), וָֽאֲשַׁלֵּחֲךָ֛ (and I would have sent you away) בְּשִׂמְחָ֥ה (with joy) וּבְשִׁרִ֖ים (and with songs), בְּתֹ֥ף (with tambourines) וּבְכִנּֽוֹר׃ (and with harps)?

28 וְלֹ֣א (And not) נְטַשְׁתַּ֔נִי (you did allow me) לְנַשֵּׁ֥ק (to kiss) לְבָנַ֖י (my sons) וְלִבְנֹתָ֑י (and my daughters). עַתָּ֖ה (Now) הִסְכַּ֥לְתָּֽ (you have acted foolishly) עֲשֽׂוֹ׃ (in doing this).

29 יֶשׁ־ (It is) לְאֵ֣ל (in the power) יָדִ֔י (of my hand) לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (to do) עִמָּכֶ֖ם (with you⁺) רָ֑ע (evil), וֵֽאלֹהֵ֨י (but the God) אֲבִיכֶ֜ם (of your⁺ father) אֶ֣מֶשׁ׀ (last night) אָמַ֧ר (spoke) אֵלַ֣י (to me), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), הִשָּׁ֧מֶר (Guard) לְךָ֛ (yourself) מִדַּבֵּ֥ר (from speaking) עִֽם־ (with) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob) מִטּ֥וֹב (from good) עַד־ (to) רָֽע׃ (evil).

30 וְעַתָּה֙ (And) הָלֹ֣ךְ (going) הָלַ֔כְתָּ (you have gone away) כִּֽי־ (because) נִכְסֹ֥ף (longing) נִכְסַ֖פְתָּה (you have longed) לְבֵ֣ית (for the house) אָבִ֑יךָ (of your father). לָ֥מָּה (Why) גָנַ֖בְתָּ (did you steal) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹהָֽי׃ (my gods)?

31 וַיַּ֥עַן (And answered) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) לְלָבָ֑ן (to Laban), כִּ֣י (Because) יָרֵ֔אתִי (I was afraid), כִּ֣י (for) אָמַ֔רְתִּי (I said): פֶּן־ (Lest) תִּגְזֹ֥ל (you take by force) אֶת־ (-) בְּנוֹתֶ֖יךָ (your daughters) מֵעִמִּֽי׃ (from me).

32 עִ֠ם (With) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whomever) תִּמְצָ֣א (you find) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹהֶיךָ֮ (your gods), לֹ֣א (not) יִֽחְיֶה֒ (he shall not live); נֶ֣גֶד (before) אַחֵ֧ינוּ (our brothers) הַֽכֶּר־ (discern) לְךָ֛ (of yours) מָ֥ה (what) עִמָּדִ֖י (is with me), וְקַֽח־ (and take it) לָ֑ךְ (with you). וְלֹֽא־ (And not) יָדַ֣ע (did know) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (Jacob) כִּ֥י (that) רָחֵ֖ל (Rachel) גְּנָבָֽתַם׃ (had stolen them).

33 וַיָּבֹ֨א (And went) לָבָ֜ן (Laban) בְּאֹ֥הֶל (into the tent) יַעֲקֹ֣ב׀ (of Jacob), וּבְאֹ֣הֶל (and into the tent) לֵאָ֗ה (of Leah), וּבְאֹ֛הֶל (and into the tent) שְׁתֵּ֥י (of the two) הָאֲמָהֹ֖ת (maidservants), וְלֹ֣א (not) מָצָ֑א (he did find anything). וַיֵּצֵא֙ (And he went) מֵאֹ֣הֶל (out of the tent) לֵאָ֔ה (of Leah) וַיָּבֹ֖א (and entered) בְּאֹ֥הֶל (into the tent) רָחֵֽל׃ (of Rachel).

34 וְרָחֵ֞ל (And Rachel) לָקְחָ֣ה (had taken) אֶת־ (-) הַתְּרָפִ֗ים (the teraphim), וַתְּשִׂמֵ֛ם (and put them) בְּכַ֥ר (in saddle) הַגָּמָ֖ל (of the camel) וַתֵּ֣שֶׁב (and sat) עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם (on them). וַיְמַשֵּׁ֥שׁ (And felt) לָבָ֛ן (Laban) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all about) הָאֹ֖הֶל (the tent), וְלֹ֥א (and not) מָצָֽא׃ (he did find them).

35 וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (And she said) אֶל־ (to) אָבִ֗יהָ (her father), אַל־ (Not) יִ֙חַר֙ (let it burn) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) אֲדֹנִ֔י (of my lord), כִּ֣י (that) ל֤וֹא (not) אוּכַל֙ (I am able) לָק֣וּם (to rise) מִפָּנֶ֔יךָ (before you), כִּי־ (for) דֶ֥רֶךְ (the way) נָשִׁ֖ים (of women is) לִ֑י (with me). וַיְחַפֵּ֕שׂ (And he searched) וְלֹ֥א (and not) מָצָ֖א (did he find) אֶת־ (-) הַתְּרָפִֽים׃ (the teraphim).

36 וַיִּ֥חַר (And anger burned) לְיַעֲקֹ֖ב (to Jacob) וַיָּ֣רֶב (and he strove) בְּלָבָ֑ן (with Laban), וַיַּ֤עַן (and answered) יַעֲקֹב֙ (Jacob) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) לְלָבָ֔ן (to Laban), מַה־ (What is) פִּשְׁעִי֙ (my trespass)? מַ֣ה (What is) חַטָּאתִ֔י (my sin), כִּ֥י (that) דָלַ֖קְתָּ (you have so hotly pursued) אַחֲרָֽי׃ (after me)?

37 כִּֽי־ (For) מִשַּׁ֣שְׁתָּ (you have felt about) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) כֵּלַ֗י (my things), מַה־ (what) מָּצָ֙אתָ֙ (have you found) מִכֹּ֣ל (of all) כְּלֵי־ (the things) בֵיתֶ֔ךָ (of your house)? שִׂ֣ים (Set it) כֹּ֔ה (here) נֶ֥גֶד (before) אַחַ֖י (my brothers) וְאַחֶ֑יךָ (and your brothers), וְיוֹכִ֖יחוּ (that they may judge) בֵּ֥ין (between) שְׁנֵֽינוּ׃ (the two of us).

38 זֶה֩ (These) עֶשְׂרִ֨ים (twenty) שָׁנָ֤ה (years) אָנֹכִי֙ (I have been) עִמָּ֔ךְ (with you), רְחֵלֶ֥יךָ (your ewes) וְעִזֶּ֖יךָ (and your female goats) לֹ֣א (not) שִׁכֵּ֑לוּ (have miscarried), וְאֵילֵ֥י (and the rams) צֹאנְךָ֖ (of your flock) לֹ֥א (not) אָכָֽלְתִּי׃ (I have eaten).

39 טְרֵפָה֙ (That which was torn) לֹא־ (not) הֵבֵ֣אתִי (I did bring) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (to you); אָנֹכִ֣י (I) אֲחַטֶּ֔נָּה (bore the loss of it). מִיָּדִ֖י (From my hand) תְּבַקְשֶׁ֑נָּה (you required it), גְּנֻֽבְתִ֣י (whether stolen) י֔וֹם (by day) וּגְנֻֽבְתִ֖י (or stolen) לָֽיְלָה׃ (by night).

40 הָיִ֧יתִי (There I was); בַיּ֛וֹם (in the day) אֲכָלַ֥נִי (consumed me) חֹ֖רֶב (the drought), וְקֶ֣רַח (and the frost) בַּלָּ֑יְלָה (in the night), וַתִּדַּ֥ד (and fled) שְׁנָתִ֖י (my sleep) מֵֽעֵינָֽי׃ (from my eyes).

41 זֶה־ (This is) לִּ֞י (my) עֶשְׂרִ֣ים (twentieth) שָׁנָה֮ (year) בְּבֵיתֶךָ֒ (in your house). עֲבַדְתִּ֜יךָ (I served you) אַרְבַּֽע־ (four) עֶשְׂרֵ֤ה (and ten) שָׁנָה֙ (years) בִּשְׁתֵּ֣י (for two) בְנֹתֶ֔יךָ (your daughters), וְשֵׁ֥שׁ (and six) שָׁנִ֖ים (years) בְּצֹאנֶ֑ךָ (for your flock), וַתַּחֲלֵ֥ף (and you have changed) אֶת־ (-) מַשְׂכֻּרְתִּ֖י (my wage) עֲשֶׂ֥רֶת (ten) מֹנִֽים׃ (times).

42 לוּלֵ֡י (Unless) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the God) אָבִי֩ (of my father), אֱלֹהֵ֨י (the God) אַבְרָהָ֜ם (of Abraham) וּפַ֤חַד (and the Fear) יִצְחָק֙ (of Isaac), הָ֣יָה (had been) לִ֔י (with me) כִּ֥י (surely) עַתָּ֖ה (now) רֵיקָ֣ם (empty) שִׁלַּחְתָּ֑נִי (you would have sent me away) אֶת־ (-). עָנְיִ֞י (My affliction) וְאֶת־ (and) יְגִ֧יעַ (the toil) כַּפַּ֛י (of my hands) רָאָ֥ה (has seen) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God), וַיּ֥וֹכַח (and He judged) אָֽמֶשׁ׃ (last night).

43 וַיַּ֨עַן (And answered) לָבָ֜ן (Laban) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) אֶֽל־ (to) יַעֲקֹ֗ב (Jacob), הַבָּנ֨וֹת (These daughters are) בְּנֹתַ֜י (my daughters), וְהַבָּנִ֤ים (and these sons are) בָּנַי֙ (my sons), וְהַצֹּ֣אן (and the flock is) צֹאנִ֔י (my flock), וְכֹ֛ל (and all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) אַתָּ֥ה (you) רֹאֶ֖ה (see) לִי־ (mine) ה֑וּא (is). וְלִבְנֹתַ֞י (And for my daughters), מָֽה־ (what) אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֤ה (can I do) לָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ (to these) הַיּ֔וֹם (today) א֥וֹ (or) לִבְנֵיהֶ֖ן (to their sons) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) יָלָֽדוּ׃ (they have borne)?

44 וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) לְכָ֛ה (come) נִכְרְתָ֥ה (let us cut) בְרִ֖ית (a covenant), אֲנִ֣י (I) וָאָ֑תָּה (and you); וְהָיָ֥ה (and let it be) לְעֵ֖ד (a witness) בֵּינִ֥י (between me) וּבֵינֶֽךָ׃ (and between you).

45 וַיִּקַּ֥ח (And took) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob) אָ֑בֶן (a stone) וַיְרִימֶ֖הָ (and raised it up) מַצֵּבָֽה׃ (as a pillar).

46 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יַעֲקֹ֤ב (Jacob) לְאֶחָיו֙ (to his brothers), לִקְט֣וּ (Gather) אֲבָנִ֔ים (stones). וַיִּקְח֥וּ (And they took) אֲבָנִ֖ים (stones) וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־ (and made) גָ֑ל (a heap), וַיֹּ֥אכְלוּ (and they ate) שָׁ֖ם (there) עַל־ (on) הַגָּֽל׃ (the heap).

47 וַיִּקְרָא־ (And called) ל֣וֹ (it) לָבָ֔ן (Laban) יְגַ֖ר (Jegar-) שָׂהֲדוּתָ֑א (sahadutha), וְיַֽעֲקֹ֔ב (and Jacob) קָ֥רָא (called it) ל֖וֹ (-) גַּלְעֵֽד׃ (Galeed).

48 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) לָבָ֔ן (Laban), הַגַּ֨ל (The heap) הַזֶּ֥ה (this is) עֵ֛ד (a witness) בֵּינִ֥י (between me) וּבֵינְךָ֖ (and between you) הַיּ֑וֹם (today). עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֥ן (thus) קָרָֽא־ (he called) שְׁמ֖וֹ (its name) גַּלְעֵֽד׃ (Galeed),

49 וְהַמִּצְפָּה֙ (and Mizpah), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (because) אָמַ֔ר (he said), יִ֥צֶף (May watch) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בֵּינִ֣י (between me) וּבֵינֶ֑ךָ (and between you) כִּ֥י (when) נִסָּתֵ֖ר (we are hidden) אִ֥ישׁ (one) מֵרֵעֵֽהוּ׃ (from another).

50 אִם־ (If) תְּעַנֶּ֣ה (you afflict) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֹתַ֗י (my daughters), וְאִם־ (or if) תִּקַּ֤ח (you take) נָשִׁים֙ (wives) עַל־ (besides) בְּנֹתַ֔י (my daughters), אֵ֥ין (although no) אִ֖ישׁ (man is) עִמָּ֑נוּ (with us), רְאֵ֕ה (see that), אֱלֹהִ֥ים (God is) עֵ֖ד (witness) בֵּינִ֥י (between me) וּבֵינֶֽךָ׃ (and between you).

51 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) לָבָ֖ן (Laban) לְיַעֲקֹ֑ב (to Jacob), הִנֵּ֣ה׀ (Behold) הַגַּ֣ל (the heap) הַזֶּ֗ה (this is), וְהִנֵּה֙ (and behold) הַמַצֵּבָ֔ה (the pillar) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) יָרִ֖יתִי (I have placed) בֵּינִ֥י (between me) וּבֵינֶֽךָ׃ (and between you).

52 עֵ֚ד (Is a witness) הַגַּ֣ל (heap) הַזֶּ֔ה (this), וְעֵדָ֖ה (and a witness) הַמַּצֵּבָ֑ה (the pillar is), אִם־ (that) אָ֗נִי (I) לֹֽא־ (not) אֶֽעֱבֹ֤ר (will pass over) אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ (to you) אֶת־ (-) הַגַּ֣ל (heap) הַזֶּ֔ה (this), וְאִם־ (and that) אַ֠תָּה (you) לֹא־ (not) תַעֲבֹ֨ר (will pass over) אֵלַ֜י (to me) אֶת־ (-) הַגַּ֥ל (heap) הַזֶּ֛ה (this) וְאֶת־ (and) הַמַּצֵּבָ֥ה (the pillar) הַזֹּ֖את (this) לְרָעָֽה׃ (for evil).

53 אֱלֹהֵ֨י (The God) אַבְרָהָ֜ם (of Abraham), וֵֽאלֹהֵ֤י (and the God) נָחוֹר֙ (of Nahor), יִשְׁפְּט֣וּ (judge) בֵינֵ֔ינוּ (between us)— אֱלֹהֵ֖י (the God) אֲבִיהֶ֑ם (of their father). וַיִּשָּׁבַ֣ע (And swore) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (Jacob) בְּפַ֖חַד (by the Fear) אָבִ֥יו (of his father) יִצְחָֽק׃ (Isaac).

54 וַיִּזְבַּ֨ח (And sacrificed) יַעֲקֹ֥ב (Jacob) זֶ֙בַח֙ (a sacrifice) בָּהָ֔ר (on the mountain), וַיִּקְרָ֥א (and he called) לְאֶחָ֖יו (his brothers) לֶאֱכָל־ (to eat) לָ֑חֶם (bread). וַיֹּ֣אכְלוּ (And they ate) לֶ֔חֶם (bread), וַיָּלִ֖ינוּ (and spent the night) בָּהָֽר׃ (on the mountain).

55 וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם (And rose early) לָבָ֜ן (Laban) בַּבֹּ֗קֶר (in the morning) וַיְנַשֵּׁ֧ק (and kissed) לְבָנָ֛יו (his sons) וְלִבְנוֹתָ֖יו (and his daughters), וַיְבָ֣רֶךְ (and he blessed) אֶתְהֶ֑ם (them) וַיֵּ֛לֶךְ (and departed), וַיָּ֥שָׁב (and returned) לָבָ֖ן (Laban) לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃ (to his place).
