Dan and Naphtali

1 וַתֵּ֣רֶא (And saw) רָחֵ֗ל (Rachel) כִּ֣י (that) לֹ֤א (not) יָֽלְדָה֙ (she bore children) לְיַעֲקֹ֔ב (to Jacob), וַתְּקַנֵּ֥א (was envious) רָחֵ֖ל (Rachel) בַּאֲחֹתָ֑הּ (of her sister) וַתֹּ֤אמֶר (and she said) אֶֽל־ (to) יַעֲקֹב֙ (Jacob), הָֽבָה־ (Give) לִּ֣י (to me) בָנִ֔ים (sons), וְאִם־ (and if) אַ֖יִן (not), מֵתָ֥ה (will die) אָנֹֽכִי׃ (I).

2 וַיִּֽחַר־ (And burned) אַ֥ף (the anger) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (of Jacob) בְּרָחֵ֑ל (against Rachel), וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (and he said), הֲתַ֤חַת (In the place) אֱלֹהִים֙ (of God) אָנֹ֔כִי (am I), אֲשֶׁר־ (who) מָנַ֥ע (has withheld) מִמֵּ֖ךְ (from you) פְּרִי־ (the fruit) בָֽטֶן׃ (of the womb)?

3 וַתֹּ֕אמֶר (And she said), הִנֵּ֛ה (Behold) אֲמָתִ֥י (my maidservant) בִלְהָ֖ה (Bilhah); בֹּ֣א (go in) אֵלֶ֑יהָ (to her) וְתֵלֵד֙ (and she will bear children) עַל־ (on) בִּרְכַּ֔י (my knees), וְאִבָּנֶ֥ה (and shell be built up) גַם־ (also) אָנֹכִ֖י (I) מִמֶּֽנָּה׃ (from her).

4 וַתִּתֶּן־ (And she gave) ל֛וֹ (to) אֶת־ (him) בִּלְהָ֥ה (Bilhah) שִׁפְחָתָ֖הּ (her maidservant) לְאִשָּׁ֑ה (for a wife), וַיָּבֹ֥א (and went in) אֵלֶ֖יהָ (to her) יַעֲקֹֽב׃ (Jacob).

5 וַתַּ֣הַר (And conceived) בִּלְהָ֔ה (Bilhah) וַתֵּ֥לֶד (and bore) לְיַעֲקֹ֖ב (to Jacob) בֵּֽן׃ (a son).

6 וַתֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) רָחֵל֙ (Rachel), דָּנַ֣נִּי (Has judged me) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God), וְגַם֙ (and also) שָׁמַ֣ע (He has heard) בְּקֹלִ֔י (my voice) וַיִּתֶּן־ (and has given) לִ֖י (to me) בֵּ֑ן (a son), עַל־ (upon) כֵּ֛ן (thus) קָרְאָ֥ה (she called) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) דָּֽן׃ (Dan).

7 וַתַּ֣הַר (And conceived) ע֔וֹד (again) וַתֵּ֕לֶד (and bore) בִּלְהָ֖ה (Bilhah), שִׁפְחַ֣ת (the maidservant) רָחֵ֑ל (of Rachel), בֵּ֥ן (a son) שֵׁנִ֖י (second) לְיַעֲקֹֽב׃ (to Jacob).

8 וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) רָחֵ֗ל (Rachel), נַפְתּוּלֵ֨י (With wrestlings) אֱלֹהִ֧ים׀ (of God) נִפְתַּ֛לְתִּי (I have wrestled) עִם־ (with) אֲחֹתִ֖י (my sister), גַּם־ (and indeed) יָכֹ֑לְתִּי (I have prevailed). וַתִּקְרָ֥א (And she called) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) נַפְתָּלִֽי׃ (Naphtali).

Gad and Asher

9 וַתֵּ֣רֶא (And saw) לֵאָ֔ה (Leah) כִּ֥י (that) עָמְדָ֖ה (she had stopped) מִלֶּ֑דֶת (bearing), וַתִּקַּח֙ (and she took) אֶת־ (-) זִלְפָּ֣ה (Zilpah) שִׁפְחָתָ֔הּ (her maidservant) וַתִּתֵּ֥ן (and gave) אֹתָ֛הּ (her) לְיַעֲקֹ֖ב (to Jacob) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ (for a wife).

10 וַתֵּ֗לֶד (And bore) זִלְפָּ֛ה (Zilpah), שִׁפְחַ֥ת (the maidservant) לֵאָ֖ה (of Leah), לְיַעֲקֹ֥ב (to Jacob) בֵּֽן׃ (a son).

11 וַתֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) לֵאָ֖ה (Leah), בְּגָד (How fortunate)! וַתִּקְרָ֥א (And she called) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) גָּֽד׃ (Gad).

12 וַתֵּ֗לֶד (And bore) זִלְפָּה֙ (Zilpah) שִׁפְחַ֣ת (the maidservant) לֵאָ֔ה (of Leah) בֵּ֥ן (a son) שֵׁנִ֖י (second) לְיַעֲקֹֽב׃ (to Jacob).

13 וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) לֵאָ֔ה (Leah), בְּאָשְׁרִ֕י (I am happy), כִּ֥י (for) אִשְּׁר֖וּנִי (will call me happy) בָּנ֑וֹת (the daughters). וַתִּקְרָ֥א (And she called) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) אָשֵֽׁר׃ (Asher).

14 וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ (And went) רְאוּבֵ֜ן (Reuben) בִּימֵ֣י (in the days of) קְצִיר־ (the harvest) חִטִּ֗ים (of wheat), וַיִּמְצָ֤א (and he found) דֽוּדָאִים֙ (mandrakes) בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה (in the field) וַיָּבֵ֣א (and brought) אֹתָ֔ם (them) אֶל־ (to) לֵאָ֖ה (Leah) אִמּ֑וֹ (his mother). וַתֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) רָחֵל֙ (Rachel) אֶל־ (to) לֵאָ֔ה (Leah), תְּנִי־ (Give some) נָ֣א (please) לִ֔י (to me) מִדּוּדָאֵ֖י (of mandrakes) בְּנֵֽךְ׃ (of your son).

15 וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (And she said) לָ֗הּ (to her), הַמְעַט֙ (Is it a small matter) קַחְתֵּ֣ךְ (your taking) אֶת־ (-) אִישִׁ֔י (my husband)? וְלָקַ֕חַת (That you would take) גַּ֥ם (also) אֶת־ (-) דּוּדָאֵ֖י (the mandrakes) בְּנִ֑י (of my son)? וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) רָחֵ֗ל (Rachel), לָכֵן֙ (Therefore) יִשְׁכַּ֤ב (he will lie) עִמָּךְ֙ (with you) הַלַּ֔יְלָה (tonight), תַּ֖חַת (for) דּוּדָאֵ֥י (the mandrakes) בְנֵֽךְ׃ (of your son).

16 וַיָּבֹ֨א (And came) יַעֲקֹ֣ב (Jacob) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׂדֶה֮ (the field) בָּעֶרֶב֒ (in the evening), וַתֵּצֵ֨א (and went out) לֵאָ֜ה (Leah) לִקְרָאת֗וֹ (to meet him) וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (and she said) אֵלַ֣י (To me) תָּב֔וֹא (you must come in), כִּ֚י (for) שָׂכֹ֣ר (hiring) שְׂכַרְתִּ֔יךָ (I have hired you) בְּדוּדָאֵ֖י (with the mandrakes) בְּנִ֑י (of my son). וַיִּשְׁכַּ֥ב (And he lay) עִמָּ֖הּ (with her) בַּלַּ֥יְלָה (the night) הֽוּא׃ (that).

Issachar, Zebulun, and Dinah

17 וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע (And listened) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) אֶל־ (to) לֵאָ֑ה (Leah), וַתַּ֛הַר (and she conceived) וַתֵּ֥לֶד (and she bore) לְיַעֲקֹ֖ב (to Jacob) בֵּ֥ן (a son) חֲמִישִֽׁי׃ (fifth).

18 וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) לֵאָ֗ה (Leah), נָתַ֤ן (Has given me) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) שְׂכָרִ֔י (my reward), אֲשֶׁר־ (because) נָתַ֥תִּי (I have given) שִׁפְחָתִ֖י (my maidservant) לְאִישִׁ֑י (to my husband). וַתִּקְרָ֥א (And she called) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) יִשָּׂשכָֽר׃ (Issachar).

19 וַתַּ֤הַר (And conceived) עוֹד֙ (again) לֵאָ֔ה (Leah), וַתֵּ֥לֶד (and she bore) בֵּן־ (a son) שִׁשִּׁ֖י (sixth) לְּיַעֲקֹֽב׃ (to Jacob).

20 וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) לֵאָ֗ה (Leah), זְבָדַ֨נִי (Has endowed me) אֱלֹהִ֥ים׀ (God) אֹתִי֮ (me) זֵ֣בֶד (with endowment) טוֹב֒ (good); הַפַּ֙עַם֙ (this time) יִזְבְּלֵ֣נִי (will honor me) אִישִׁ֔י (my husband), כִּֽי־ (for) יָלַ֥דְתִּי (I have borne) ל֖וֹ (to him) שִׁשָּׁ֣ה (six) בָנִ֑ים (sons). וַתִּקְרָ֥א (And she called) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) זְבֻלֽוּן׃ (Zebulun).

21 וְאַחַ֖ר (And afterward) יָ֣לְדָה (she bore) בַּ֑ת (a daughter) וַתִּקְרָ֥א (and she called) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמָ֖הּ (her name) דִּינָֽה׃ (Dinah).

Joseph

22 וַיִּזְכֹּ֥ר (And remembered) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) אֶת־ (-) רָחֵ֑ל (Rachel), וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע (and listened) אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ (to her) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God) וַיִּפְתַּ֖ח (and He opened) אֶת־ (-) רַחְמָֽהּ׃ (her womb).

23 וַתַּ֖הַר (And she conceived) וַתֵּ֣לֶד (and she bore) בֵּ֑ן (a son) וַתֹּ֕אמֶר (and she said), אָסַ֥ף (Has taken away) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) אֶת־ (-) חֶרְפָּתִֽי׃ (my reproach).

24 וַתִּקְרָ֧א (And she called) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֛וֹ (his name) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph) לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), יֹסֵ֧ף (May add) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) לִ֖י (to me) בֵּ֥ן (son) אַחֵֽר׃ (another).

Jacob Prospers

25 וַיְהִ֕י (And it came to pass) כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (when) יָלְדָ֥ה (had borne) רָחֵ֖ל (Rachel) אֶת־ (-) יוֹסֵ֑ף (Joseph), וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (that said) יַעֲקֹב֙ (Jacob) אֶל־ (to) לָבָ֔ן (Laban), שַׁלְּחֵ֙נִי֙ (Send me away), וְאֵ֣לְכָ֔ה (that I may go) אֶל־ (to) מְקוֹמִ֖י (my place) וּלְאַרְצִֽי׃ (and to my land).

26 תְּנָ֞ה (Give) אֶת־ (me) נָשַׁ֣י (my wives) וְאֶת־ (and) יְלָדַ֗י (my children), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whom) עָבַ֧דְתִּי (I have served) אֹֽתְךָ֛ (you) בָּהֵ֖ן (for them), וְאֵלֵ֑כָה (and I will go). כִּ֚י (For) אַתָּ֣ה (you) יָדַ֔עְתָּ (you know) אֶת־ (-) עֲבֹדָתִ֖י (my service) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) עֲבַדְתִּֽיךָ׃ (I have served you).

27 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) לָבָ֔ן (Laban), אִם־ (If), נָ֛א (please stay), מָצָ֥אתִי (I have found) חֵ֖ן (favor) בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ (in your eyes). נִחַ֕שְׁתִּי (I have learned by divination) וַיְבָרֲכֵ֥נִי (that has blessed me) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בִּגְלָלֶֽךָ׃ (for your sake).

28 וַיֹּאמַ֑ר (And he said), נָקְבָ֧ה (Specify) שְׂכָרְךָ֛ (your wage) עָלַ֖י (to me), וְאֶתֵּֽנָה׃ (and I will give it).

29 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) אֵלָ֔יו (to him), אַתָּ֣ה (You) יָדַ֔עְתָּ (you know) אֵ֖ת (-) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (how) עֲבַדְתִּ֑יךָ (I have served you), וְאֵ֛ת (and) אֲשֶׁר־ (how) הָיָ֥ה (has been) מִקְנְךָ֖ (your livestock) אִתִּֽי׃ (with me).

30 כִּ֡י (For) מְעַט֩ (little) אֲשֶׁר־ (was what) הָיָ֨ה (had) לְךָ֤ (you) לְפָנַי֙ (before me), וַיִּפְרֹ֣ץ (and it burst forth) לָרֹ֔ב (into a multitude), וַיְבָ֧רֶךְ (and has blessed) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֹתְךָ֖ (you) לְרַגְלִ֑י (at my foot). וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now), מָתַ֛י (when) אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֥ה (shall provide) גַם־ (also) אָנֹכִ֖י (I) לְבֵיתִֽי׃ (for my own house)?

31 וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And he said), מָ֣ה (What) אֶתֶּן־ (shall I give) לָ֑ךְ (to you)? וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יַעֲקֹב֙ (Jacob), לֹא־ (Not) תִתֶּן־ (you shall give) לִ֣י (to me) מְא֔וּמָה (anything). אִם־ (If) תַּֽעֲשֶׂה־ (you will do) לִּי֙ (for me) הַדָּבָ֣ר (the thing) הַזֶּ֔ה (this), אָשׁ֛וּבָה (I will turn back); אֶרְעֶ֥ה (I will pasture); צֹֽאנְךָ֖ (your flock) אֶשְׁמֹֽר׃ (I will keep it).

32 אֶֽעֱבֹ֨ר (I will pass) בְּכָל־ (through all) צֹֽאנְךָ֜ (your flock) הַיּ֗וֹם (today), הָסֵ֨ר (remove) מִשָּׁ֜ם (from there) כָּל־ (every) שֶׂ֣ה׀ (one) נָקֹ֣ד (speckled) וְטָל֗וּא (and spotted), וְכָל־ (and every) שֶׂה־ (one) חוּם֙ (brown) בַּכְּשָׂבִ֔ים (among the lambs), וְטָל֥וּא (and the spotted) וְנָקֹ֖ד (and speckled) בָּעִזִּ֑ים (among the goats); וְהָיָ֖ה (and these shall be) שְׂכָרִֽי׃ (my wage).

33 וְעָֽנְתָה־ (And will answer) בִּ֤י (for me) צִדְקָתִי֙ (my righteousness) בְּי֣וֹם (in time) מָחָ֔ר (to come), כִּֽי־ (when) תָב֥וֹא (you come) עַל־ (upon) שְׂכָרִ֖י (my wage) לְפָנֶ֑יךָ (before your face); כֹּ֣ל (every one) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) אֵינֶנּוּ֩ (not) נָקֹ֨ד (speckled) וְטָל֜וּא (and spotted) בָּֽעִזִּ֗ים (among the goats), וְחוּם֙ (and brown) בַּכְּשָׂבִ֔ים (among the lambs), גָּנ֥וּב (was stolen) ה֖וּא (it) אִתִּֽי׃ (if it is with me).

34 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) לָבָ֖ן (Laban), הֵ֑ן (Behold) ל֖וּ (oh that) יְהִ֥י (it were) כִדְבָרֶֽךָ׃ (according to your word).

35 וַיָּ֣סַר (And he removed) בַּיּוֹם֩ (day) הַה֨וּא (that) אֶת־ (-) הַתְּיָשִׁ֜ים (the male goats) הָֽעֲקֻדִּ֣ים (that were striped) וְהַטְּלֻאִ֗ים (and spotted), וְאֵ֤ת (and) כָּל־ (all) הָֽעִזִּים֙ (the female goats) הַנְּקֻדּ֣וֹת (that were speckled) וְהַטְּלֻאֹ֔ת (and spotted), כֹּ֤ל (every one) אֲשֶׁר־ (that had) לָבָן֙ (white) בּ֔וֹ (in it), וְכָל־ (and all) ח֖וּם (the brown) בַּכְּשָׂבִ֑ים (among the lambs), וַיִּתֵּ֖ן (and gave them) בְּיַד־ (into the hand) בָּנָֽיו׃ (of his sons).

36 וַיָּ֗שֶׂם (And he put) דֶּ֚רֶךְ (a journey) שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת (three) יָמִ֔ים (days’) בֵּינ֖וֹ (between himself) וּבֵ֣ין (and between) יַעֲקֹ֑ב (Jacob), וְיַעֲקֹ֗ב (and Jacob) רֹעֶ֛ה (was pasturing) אֶת־ (-) צֹ֥אן (the flock) לָבָ֖ן (of Laban) הַנּוֹתָרֹֽת׃ (the remaining ones).

37 וַיִּֽקַּֽח־ (And took) ל֣וֹ (for himself) יַעֲקֹ֗ב (Jacob) מַקַּ֥ל (rods) לִבְנֶ֛ה (of poplar) לַ֖ח (fresh), וְל֣וּז (and of almond) וְעֶרְמ֑וֹן (and plane tree), וַיְפַצֵּ֤ל (and he peeled) בָּהֵן֙ (in them) פְּצָל֣וֹת (stripes) לְבָנ֔וֹת (white), מַחְשֹׂף֙ (exposing) הַלָּבָ֔ן (the white) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that was) עַל־ (in) הַמַּקְלֽוֹת׃ (the rods).

38 וַיַּצֵּ֗ג (And he set) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּקְלוֹת֙ (the rods) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) פִּצֵּ֔ל (he had peeled) בָּרֳהָטִ֖ים (in the channels) בְּשִֽׁקֲת֣וֹת (in the troughs) הַמָּ֑יִם (in the watering), אֲשֶׁר֩ (where) תָּבֹ֨אןָ (came) הַצֹּ֤אן (the flock) לִשְׁתּוֹת֙ (to drink)— לְנֹ֣כַח (before) הַצֹּ֔אן (the flock)— וַיֵּחַ֖מְנָה (and they conceived) בְּבֹאָ֥ן (when they came) לִשְׁתּֽוֹת׃ (to drink).

39 וַיֶּחֱמ֥וּ (And conceived) הַצֹּ֖אן (the flock) אֶל־ (before) הַמַּקְל֑וֹת (the rods), וַתֵּלַ֣דְןָ (and brought forth) הַצֹּ֔אן (the flock) עֲקֻדִּ֥ים (striped), נְקֻדִּ֖ים (speckled), וּטְלֻאִֽים׃ (and spotted).

40 וְהַכְּשָׂבִים֮ (And the lambs) הִפְרִ֣יד (separated) יַעֲקֹב֒ (Jacob) וַ֠יִּתֵּן (and he set) פְּנֵ֨י (the face) הַצֹּ֧אן (of the flock) אֶל־ (toward) עָקֹ֛ד (the striped), וְכָל־ (and all) ח֖וּם (the brown) בְּצֹ֣אן (in the flock) לָבָ֑ן (of Laban); וַיָּֽשֶׁת־ (and he set) ל֤וֹ (for himself) עֲדָרִים֙ (flocks) לְבַדּ֔וֹ (by themselves), וְלֹ֥א (and not) שָׁתָ֖ם (did he set them) עַל־ (with) צֹ֥אן (flock) לָבָֽן׃ (of Laban).

41 וְהָיָ֗ה (And it came to pass), בְּכָל־ (whenever) יַחֵם֮ (conceived) הַצֹּ֣אן (of the flock) הַמְקֻשָּׁרוֹת֒ (the strong), וְשָׂ֨ם (that placed) יַעֲקֹ֧ב (Jacob) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּקְל֛וֹת (the rods) לְעֵינֵ֥י (before the eyes) הַצֹּ֖אן (of the flock) בָּרֳהָטִ֑ים (in the channels), לְיַחְמֵ֖נָּה (that they might conceive) בַּמַּקְלֽוֹת׃ (in front of the rods).

42 וּבְהַעֲטִ֥יף (And were feeble) הַצֹּ֖אן (the flock), לֹ֣א (not) יָשִׂ֑ים (he did put them in). וְהָיָ֤ה (So were) הָעֲטֻפִים֙ (the feeble ones) לְלָבָ֔ן (to Laban), וְהַקְּשֻׁרִ֖ים (and the strong ones) לְיַעֲקֹֽב׃ (to Jacob).

43 וַיִּפְרֹ֥ץ (And burst forth) הָאִ֖ישׁ (the man) מְאֹ֣ד (greatly) מְאֹ֑ד (greatly), וַֽיְהִי־ (and he had) לוֹ֙ (to him) צֹ֣אן (flocks) רַבּ֔וֹת (many), וּשְׁפָחוֹת֙ (and maidservants), וַעֲבָדִ֔ים (and menservants), וּגְמַלִּ֖ים (and camels), וַחֲמֹרִֽים׃ (and donkeys).
