Romans 14
Berean Study Bible

The Law of Liberty

Accept him whose faith is weak,

Believers with tender or uninformed consciences were to be received as fellow members of Christ’s body. In Rome, some Christians avoided certain foods and observed particular days, often from Jewish backgrounds or uncertainty about the freedom they possessed in Christ. Their weakness did not exclude them from fellowship.

Rom 15:1-2 We who are strong ought to bear with the shortcomings…
Rom 15:7 Accept one another, just as Christ accepted you,…
1Th 5:14 And we urge you, brothers, to admonish the unruly…

without passing judgment on his opinions.

Acceptance was not an invitation to argue over disputed practices or to condemn personal convictions where God had not given a direct command. The church was to preserve unity while leaving each believer accountable to the Lord.

Col 2:16 Therefore let no one judge you by what you eat or drink,…
1Co 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time;…
Jas 4:11-12 Brothers, do not slander one another…

For one person has faith to eat all things,

Some believers understood that Christ had fulfilled the ceremonial distinctions of the Mosaic Law and that food itself did not make a person spiritually clean or unclean. Jewish and Gentile Christians in Rome brought different customs into the church, and some freely ate meat and other foods without regarding former dietary restrictions as binding.

Mrk 7:18-19 “Are you still so dull?” He asked. “Do you not understand?…
Act 10:13-15 Then a voice said to him: “Get up, Peter, kill and eat!”…
1Co 10:25-27 Eat anything sold in the meat market, without raising…

while another, who is weak, eats only vegetables.

Others limited their diet to avoid any possibility of eating meat that had been connected with idolatry or prepared contrary to Jewish standards. Their restraint arose from a sincere but limited understanding of Christian liberty. Paul identifies them as weak in faith, not because their desire for purity was wrong, but because they had not yet grasped the freedom believers possess in Christ.

Dan 1:12-16 Please test your servants for ten days…
1Co 8:7-13 But not everyone has this knowledge. Some people…
Col 2:20-23 If you have died with Christ to the spiritual forces…

The one who eats everything must not belittle the one who does not,

Jewish believers often continued to observe the food laws given through Moses, while many Gentile believers did not share those customs. Those who understood their freedom to eat foods once considered unclean were not to treat more cautious believers with contempt or regard them as spiritually inferior.

Rom 15:1-3 We who are strong ought to bear with the shortcomings…
1Co 8:9-13 Be careful, however, that your freedom does not…
Php 2:3-4 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride,…

and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does,

Believers who limited their diet for reasons of conscience were not to condemn those who ate with freedom. The church included people from different backgrounds, and dietary convictions could not become a basis for judging another servant of Christ.

Col 2:16-17 Therefore let no one judge you by what you eat or drink,…
1Co 10:25-27 Eat anything sold in the meat market, without raising…
Mat 7:1-2 “Do not judge, or you will be judged.…

for God has accepted him.

God receives believers on the basis of faith in Christ, not on dietary observances. Since both the strong and the weak belong to the Lord, they are to live together in peace rather than divide over matters that do not determine salvation.

Rom 15:7 Accept one another, just as Christ accepted you,…
Act 10:34-35 Then Peter began to speak: “I now truly understand…
Eph 1:6 to the praise of His glorious grace,…

Who are you to judge someone else’s servant?

Paul addresses disputes among believers in Rome over food, sacred days, and other matters of conscience. Jewish and Gentile Christians often differed in their customs, yet each belonged to Christ. A servant answered to his own master, not to another household. In the same way, believers are not authorized to condemn fellow servants of the Lord over issues God has not made grounds for separation.

1Co 4:3-5 I care very little, however, if I am judged by you…
Jas 4:11-12 Brothers, do not slander one another…
Mat 7:1-2 “Do not judge, or you will be judged.…

To his own master he stands or falls.

Each believer is accountable to Christ, who knows the heart, motives, and obedience of His people. Human judgments are limited and often shaped by personal customs or preferences.

Eph 6:5-8 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear…
Col 3:22-24 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything,…
2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,…

And he will stand,

Paul gives assurance that the believer accepted by Christ will not be abandoned because of another person’s criticism or disapproval.

Psa 37:23-24 The steps of a man are ordered by the LORD…
Pro 24:16 For though a righteous man may fall seven times,…
Mic 7:8 Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen…

for the Lord is able to make him stand.

The Lord has both the authority and power to preserve His servants. Their standing rests ultimately on His grace and faithfulness, not on the approval of other believers.

Jud 1:24-25 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling…
1Th 5:23-24 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify…
1Pe 1:5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power…

One person regards a certain day above the others,

Jewish believers often continued to honor the Sabbath and the appointed feasts of Israel, while Gentile believers had not shared those customs. Such observances were not required for acceptance with God, yet a believer could keep them as an expression of devotion to the Lord.

Gal 4:10 You are observing special days and months…
Exo 20:8-10 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.…
Lev 23:3 For six days work may be done, but the seventh day…

while someone else considers every day alike.

Other Christians recognized no religious distinction between particular days. In Christ, ceremonial calendar observances were no longer binding, and believers were not to judge one another over practices God had not commanded for the church.

Col 2:16-17 Therefore let no one judge you by what you eat or drink,…
Mrk 2:27-28 Then Jesus declared, “The Sabbath was made for man,…
Gal 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.…

Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.

Each believer was responsible to act from an informed conscience before God, not from pressure, pride, or disregard for others. Personal liberty in such matters was to be exercised in faith and with sincere intent to honor the Lord.

Rom 4:20-21 Yet he did not waver through disbelief in the promise of God…
2Ti 1:12 For I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced…
Col 2:2 that they may be encouraged in heart, knit together in love,…

He who observes a special day does so to the Lord;

Some Jewish believers continued to observe the Sabbath and Jewish festivals, while others did not regard such days as binding. Paul permits differing practices when they are carried out to honor the Lord and are not used to judge fellow believers.

Lev 23:2-4 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them,…
Col 2:16-17 Therefore let no one judge you by what you eat or drink,…
Gal 4:10-11 You are observing special days and months…

he who eats does so to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God;

Believers who ate foods without restriction did so in gratitude for God’s provision. Their freedom was not disregard for God, but a thankful recognition that food is received from His hand.

1Co 10:30-31 If I partake in the meal with thankfulness,…
Act 27:35 After he had said this, Paul took bread and gave thanks…
1Ti 4:4-5 For every creation of God is good, and nothing…

and he who abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God.

Those who refrained from certain foods also sought to honor the Lord. Their abstinence was not to be despised, since it was governed by conscience and accompanied by thanksgiving. Both practices were acceptable when done sincerely before God.

Mat 6:16-18 When you fast, do not be somber like the hypocrites…
Dan 1:8 But Daniel made up his mind not to defile himself…
1Co 8:13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to stumble…

For none of us lives to himself alone,

Believers belong to Christ and therefore to one another. In the mixed congregations of Rome, Jewish and Gentile Christians were called to recognize that personal choices in disputed matters affected the fellowship of the whole church. The Christian life is not lived independently, since every member shares responsibility for preserving peace, avoiding offense, and serving the good of others.

2Co 5:15 And He died for all, that those who live…
1Co 6:19-20 Do you not know that your body is a temple…
Gal 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live,…

and none of us dies to himself alone.

Death does not remove a believer from Christ’s lordship or from the hope shared by His people. Whether Christians faced ordinary death, suffering, or persecution under Roman rule, their lives and deaths testified to the Lord they served. United with Christ in His death and resurrection, believers have a common destiny that reaches beyond death into eternal life.

Rev 14:13 And I heard a voice from heaven telling me to write…
1Th 4:14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, …
2Co 5:8 We are confident, then, and would prefer to be…

If we live, we live to the Lord,

Every part of a believer’s life is under Christ’s authority and directed toward His will. Christians in Rome faced pressures from pagan society and disputes within the church, yet their first loyalty was not to personal preference, public opinion, or earthly powers, but to the Lord who had saved them.

2Co 5:15 And He died for all, that those who live…
Php 1:21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
Gal 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live,…

and if we die, we die to the Lord.

Death does not end the believer’s relationship with Christ. Whether death comes naturally or through suffering for the faith, the Christian remains in the Lord’s care and belongs to Him beyond the grave.

2Ti 2:11 This is a trustworthy saying: If we died with Him…
2Co 5:8 We are confident, then, and would prefer to be…
Php 1:23 I am torn between the two. I desire to depart…

So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.

Christ’s lordship is complete over His people in life and death. Those redeemed by Him are His possession, secured by His death and resurrection, and therefore need not be ruled by fear, hardship, or the judgment of others.

1Co 6:19-20 Do you not know that your body is a temple…
Act 20:28 Keep watch over yourselves and the entire flock…
1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood…

For this reason

Christ’s death and resurrection establish the basis for believers to live under His authority and to avoid judging one another over disputable matters.

Jhn 10:17-18 The reason the Father loves Me is that I lay down My life…
Heb 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower…
Heb 12:2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author…

Christ died

He bore the penalty of sin as the final sacrifice, fulfilling God’s plan of redemption.

1Co 15:3 For what I received I passed on to you: that Christ died…
1Th 5:10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep,…

2Ti 4:1 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus,…
1Pe 4:5 But they will have to give an account…

Why, then, do you judge your brother?

Jewish and Gentile believers in Rome differed over food, sacred days, and other matters of conscience. Paul forbids condemning fellow Christians over practices not explicitly required or forbidden by God.

Mat 7:1-5 “Do not judge, or you will be judged.…
Jas 4:11-12 Brothers, do not slander one another…
Luk 6:37 Do not judge, and you will not be judged.…

Or why do you belittle your brother?

Those who felt free from former restrictions were not to despise believers whose consciences led them to abstain. Neither group had authority to treat the other as spiritually inferior.

Mat 5:22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry…
Mat 18:10 See that you do not look down on any of these little ones.…
Luk 18:9 To some who trusted in their own righteousness,…

For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.

Every believer will give an account before God, who alone knows the heart and judges rightly. This reality removes the place for pride, contempt, and personal condemnation within the church.

2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,…
Rev 20:12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing…
Heb 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight;…

It is written:

Paul supports his teaching on accountability before God by citing Isaiah 45:23, grounding the warning in God’s revealed and unchanging word.

Mat 4:4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not…”…
Luk 4:4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live…”…

“As surely as I live, says the Lord,

God swears by His own eternal life, confirming that His decree cannot fail and that His authority extends over every person.

Ezk 33:11 Say to them: ‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,…
Ezk 18:3 As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,…
Num 14:21 Yet as surely as I live and as surely as the whole earth…

every knee will bow before Me;

All people will ultimately stand before God and acknowledge His rightful rule. No nation, ruler, or individual will remain independent of His judgment.

Isa 45:23 By Myself I have sworn; truth has gone out from My mouth,…
Php 2:10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,…
Isa 66:23 From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath…

every tongue will confess to God.”

Every person will openly recognize God’s justice and sovereignty. Paul applies this future certainty to believers, who should not presume to judge one another when each will answer personally to the Lord.

Php 2:11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,…
Rom 10:9-10 that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”…
1Ti 6:13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life…

So then,

Paul concludes his instruction about disputes over food, days, and other matters of conscience within the church. Believers are not appointed to judge fellow servants of Christ.

Ecc 12:14 For God will bring every deed into judgment,…
Jas 4:12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One…

each of us

Jewish and Gentile Christians alike stand before God as individuals, regardless of background, status, or convictions in matters not commanded or forbidden by Scripture.

2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,…
Gal 6:5 For each one should carry his own load.

will give an account

A future reckoning awaits every believer. God will evaluate each person’s conduct, motives, and stewardship in light of the responsibility entrusted to him.

1Pe 4:5 But they will have to give an account…
Mat 12:36 But I tell you that men will give an account…

of himself

No one will answer for another person’s conscience or choices. Personal responsibility before God removes any basis for pride, condemnation, or interference in another believer’s service to Christ.

Ezk 18:20 The soul who sins is the one who will die.…
1Co 11:28 Each one must examine himself before he eats…

to God.

God is the final Judge, and all believers belong to Him. His judgment is righteous and complete.

The Law of Love

Therefore let us stop judging one another.

Jewish and Gentile Christians in Rome differed over food, sacred days, and other matters of conscience. Paul forbids them from treating fellow believers with contempt or condemning them over practices not required for salvation. God alone is Judge, and Christ has received both the strong and the weak in faith.

Mat 7:1-2 “Do not judge, or you will be judged.…
Jas 4:11-12 Brothers, do not slander one another…
1Co 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time;…

Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way.

Believers must consider how their conduct affects others, especially those whose consciences are less settled. Christian liberty must not be used in a way that pressures another believer to act against conscience or encourages sin. Love places the spiritual good of a brother or sister above personal preference.

1Co 8:9 Be careful, however, that your freedom does not…
1Co 8:13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to stumble…
1Co 10:32-33 Do not become a stumbling block, whether to Jews or Greeks……

I am convinced and fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus

Paul speaks with confidence grounded in Christ’s authority and the revelation given through Him. His conviction is not merely personal preference but reflects the freedom established under the New Covenant.

Gal 5:10 I am confident in the Lord that you will…
1Th 1:5 our gospel came to you not only in word,…
2Ti 1:12 For I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced…

that nothing is unclean in itself.

The ceremonial distinctions of the Mosaic Law had separated Israel from the nations and taught important truths about holiness. With Christ’s fulfillment of the Law, food and other created things are not inherently defiling. Moral impurity comes from sin, not from eating what God has made.

Mrk 7:18-19 “Are you still so dull?” He asked. “Do you not understand?…
Act 10:15 The voice spoke to him a second time: Do not call anything…
1Ti 4:4 For every creation of God is good, and nothing…

But if anyone regards something as unclean,

Jewish and Gentile believers entered the church with different religious backgrounds and long-held practices. Some believers could not yet participate in certain freedoms without feeling they had violated God’s will. Paul recognizes that such convictions must be treated carefully rather than dismissed.

1Co 8:7 But not everyone has this knowledge. Some people…
1Co 10:28 But if someone tells you, “This food was offered to idols,”…
1Ti 4:3 They will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from…

then for him it is unclean.

A believer who acts against a sincere conscience does not act in faith and therefore sins. Christian liberty must be governed by love, allowing believers to grow in understanding without pressuring one another to violate conscience.

Tit 1:15 To the pure, all things are pure; but to the defiled…
1Co 8:12-13 By sinning against your brothers in this way…
Mat 15:18-20 But the things that come out of the mouth…

If your brother is distressed by what you eat,

Dietary differences between Jewish and Gentile believers could trouble consciences and disrupt fellowship. Christians were to consider how their choices affected fellow believers whose faith remained sensitive in such matters.

1Co 8:13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to stumble…
1Co 8:9 Be careful, however, that your freedom does not…
1Co 8:10 For if someone with a weak conscience sees you…

you are no longer acting in love.

Personal freedom was never to outweigh the spiritual good of another believer or the unity of the church; love (agape) denotes selfless, unconditional love.

1Co 13:5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking…
Rom 13:10 Love does no wrong to its neighbor. Therefore love is…
Php 2:4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests,…

Do not by your eating destroy your brother,

Paul warns that insisting on food that violates another believer’s conscience may encourage that person to act against what he believes God requires, harming his spiritual walk.

1Co 8:11 So this weak brother, for whom Christ died,…
1Co 8:12 By sinning against your brothers in this way…
1Co 10:24 No one should seek his own good, but the good of others.

for whom Christ died.

Every believer has great worth because Christ gave Himself for that person. His sacrifice calls believers to treat one another with care rather than using freedom selfishly.

1Th 5:10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep,…
Gal 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live,…
Eph 5:2 and walk in love, just as Christ loved us…

Do not allow

Do not allow your personal liberty to be exercised in a way that harms the church’s witness or unsettles fellow believers.

Eph 4:27 and do not give the devil a foothold.
1Co 10:32 Do not become a stumbling block, whether to Jews or Greeks……
Gal 5:13 For you, brothers, were called to freedom;…

what you consider good,

“What you consider good” refers to lawful freedoms concerning food, drink, and the observance of special days. Believers should exercise these freedoms in ways that do not cause others to speak evil of them.

1Co 10:24 No one should seek his own good, but the good of others.
1Pe 2:15 For it is God’s will that by doing good…
Php 2:4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests,…

then, to be spoken of as evil.

In the mixed Jewish and Gentile congregation at Rome, careless use of such freedoms could invite criticism, deepen division, and make what was good appear harmful.

1Pe 2:12 Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles…
1Pe 3:16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who slander you…
Tit 2:8 and wholesome speech that is above reproach…

For the kingdom of God

For the kingdom of God is God’s rule over His people, inaugurated through Christ and to be fully revealed at His return.

1Co 4:20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.
Mat 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,…
Luk 17:20-21 When asked by the Pharisees, Jesus replied,…

is not a matter of eating and drinking,

Paul addresses disputes over dietary practices that threatened fellowship between Jewish and Gentile believers. Food and drink do not determine acceptance with God or spiritual maturity.

Col 2:16-17 Therefore let no one judge you by what you eat or drink,…
1Ti 4:3-5 They will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from…
Heb 13:9 Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings,…

but of righteousness,

God gives believers right standing through faith in Christ, producing lives marked by obedience to His will;

Mat 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,…
Php 1:11 filled with the fruit of righteousness…
Eph 4:24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God…

peace,

In Romans 14:17, “peace” refers to reconciliation with God and harmonious relationships within the church.

Jhn 14:27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you.…
Eph 2:14-17 For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one…
Col 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,…

and joy

This joy is a settled gladness rooted in salvation and in the believer’s experience of God’s presence through the Holy Spirit.

Jhn 15:11 I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you…
1Pe 1:8 Though you have not seen Him, you love Him;…
Psa 16:11 You have made known to me the path of life;…

in the Holy Spirit.

These blessings are produced by the Spirit, not by external religious observances.

Act 13:52 And the disciples were filled with joy…
1Th 1:6 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord…
Rom 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace…

For whoever serves Christ in this way

In Romans 14, serving Christ means pursuing righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit while refusing to let disputes over food or sacred days divide believers. Christian liberty is governed by love, especially when its exercise could harm another’s conscience or disrupt the church’s unity.

Col 3:24 because you know that you will receive an inheritance…
Jhn 12:26 If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am…
Gal 1:10 Am I now seeking the approval of men, or of God?…

is pleasing to God

Such conduct honors God because it reflects faith, obedience, and concern for the spiritual good of others rather than self-interest.

2Co 5:9 So we aspire to please Him, whether we are at home…
1Th 2:4 Instead, we speak as those approved by God…
Heb 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God.…

and approved by men.

A life marked by humility, integrity, and peace earns the respect of both fellow believers and those outside the church, giving visible evidence of Christ’s work in His people.

Pro 3:4 Then you will find favor and high regard…
2Co 8:21 For we are taking great care to do what is right,…
Luk 2:52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and…

So then,

Paul draws his instruction to a close after addressing disputes over food, days, and personal convictions among believers. Christ’s acceptance of both Jews and Gentiles required them to refuse contempt, judgment, and conduct that damaged fellowship.

Rom 15:2 Each of us should please his neighbor for his good…
Gal 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good…

let us pursue

Believers are to make deliberate efforts to preserve unity rather than merely avoid open conflict. Love takes initiative in seeking the good of fellow Christians.

2Ti 2:22 Flee from youthful passions and pursue righteousness…
Heb 12:14 Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness,…

what leads to peace

Peace involves restored relationships and orderly fellowship within the church. In Rome’s mixed congregation, it meant setting aside secondary disputes that could divide those whom God had received.

Eph 4:3 and with diligence to preserve the unity…
Jas 3:18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit…
2Co 13:11 Finally, brothers, rejoice! Aim for perfect harmony,…

and to mutual edification.

The goal is not personal freedom at another’s expense, but the strengthening of the whole body. Each believer should act in ways that help others grow in faith, obedience, and spiritual stability.

1Th 5:11 Therefore encourage and build one another up…
Eph 4:12 equip the saints for works of ministry…
1Co 14:26 What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together,…

Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food.

God is at work in every believer, building faith and strengthening the church. Disputes over dietary practices threatened the unity of Jewish and Gentile Christians in Rome. Food was a secondary matter and must not be allowed to damage a brother or sister for whom Christ died.

1Co 8:11 So this weak brother, for whom Christ died,…
1Co 8:12 By sinning against your brothers in this way…

All food is clean,

Under the new covenant, ceremonial distinctions between clean and unclean foods no longer bind believers. Christians may receive God’s provisions with thanksgiving, yet freedom must be governed by love rather than personal preference.

Mrk 7:19 because it does not enter his heart, but it goes…
Act 10:15 The voice spoke to him a second time: Do not call anything…
1Ti 4:4 For every creation of God is good, and nothing…

but it is wrong for a man to let his eating be a stumbling block.

A believer sins when the exercise of lawful freedom pressures another to violate conscience, creates confusion, or contributes to spiritual harm. Love willingly limits personal rights for the good of others and the peace of the church.

1Co 8:9 Be careful, however, that your freedom does not…
1Co 8:13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to stumble…
Mat 18:7 Woe to the world for the causes of sin……

It is better not to eat meat

Believers with stronger consciences were free to eat meat, but they were not free to disregard the convictions of fellow Christians. Some may have avoided meat because of former associations with idol worship or because they continued to observe Jewish dietary scruples. Love required voluntary restraint when eating would pressure another believer to act against conscience.

1Co 8:13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to stumble…
1Co 10:28-29 But if someone tells you, “This food was offered to idols,”…
Act 15:29 You must abstain from food sacrificed to idols,…

or drink wine

Wine was widely used in daily life and at meals, yet it could be connected with pagan worship, drunkenness, or a believer’s former sinful habits. A Christian could rightly abstain when drinking would encourage another person toward sin or unsettle a weak conscience.

Dan 1:8 But Daniel made up his mind not to defile himself…
Col 2:16 Therefore let no one judge you by what you eat or drink,…
1Co 10:21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons…

or to do anything

The principle extends beyond food and drink. Any lawful practice should be surrendered when it becomes a spiritual obstacle to another believer. Peace and mutual strengthening in the church matter more than insisting on personal rights.

1Co 10:23-24 “Everything is permissible,” but not everything…
1Co 10:31-33 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do…
Php 2:4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests,…

to cause your brother to stumble.

Causing a brother to stumble means influencing him to violate his conscience or return to sinful practices. Paul calls believers to use their freedom carefully, seeking the spiritual good of others rather than creating division or harm.

1Co 8:9 Be careful, however, that your freedom does not…
1Co 8:12 By sinning against your brothers in this way…
Mat 18:6-7 But if anyone causes one of these little ones…

Keep your belief about such matters between yourself and God.

In matters not directly commanded or forbidden by God, believers were to exercise their freedom without turning personal convictions into tests of fellowship. Jewish and Gentile Christians differed over food, wine, and sacred days, but these practices were not to divide the church or become occasions for judging others.

1Co 8:9-13 Be careful, however, that your freedom does not…
1Co 10:25-30 Eat anything sold in the meat market, without raising…
Col 2:16-17 Therefore let no one judge you by what you eat or drink,…

Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves.

A believer is blessed when he can act with a clear conscience before God, knowing that his conduct does not violate faith or harm another Christian. Christian liberty must be governed by faith, love, and obedience, not by self-indulgence or disregard for the consciences of others.
