Genesis 13

Abram and Lot Part Ways

So Abram went up out of Egypt

Abram left the place where fear had led him into deception and returned toward the land God had promised him. His departure marked a restoration of direction after the events involving Pharaoh and Sarai.

into the Negev—

The Negev lay in southern Canaan between Egypt and the central hill country. Its dry, demanding landscape formed part of the land God had pledged to Abram and his descendants.

he and his wife

Sarai remained with Abram as the woman through whom God would fulfill His promise of a son. Their shared journey continued despite the dangers and failures they had faced in Egypt.

and all his possessions—

Abram returned with substantial livestock, servants, and goods acquired during his time in Egypt. His increasing wealth showed God’s continued provision, while also creating circumstances that would soon require separation from Lot.

and Lot was with him.

Lot traveled with Abram as a member of his household and beneficiary of God’s blessing upon Abram. Their growing herds and households would eventually make it impossible for them to remain together in the same area.

And Abram had become extremely wealthy

Abram returned from Egypt with substantial resources, showing God’s continued provision despite the difficulties of his journey. His prosperity gave him the means to support a large household and remain independent among the peoples of Canaan.

in livestock

Herds and flocks supplied food, clothing, transport, and trade goods. Their size indicates that Abram’s household included many servants and dependents and that his presence carried significant influence in the land.

and silver and gold.

Precious metals provided portable and enduring wealth for commerce, agreements, and travel. Abram’s possessions prepared him for the responsibilities and conflicts that would soon arise between his household and Lot’s.

From the Negev

Abraham left the southern desert region and traveled back into the hill country of Canaan.

Gen 12:9 And Abram journeyed on toward the Negev.

he journeyed from place to place

His movements reflected the demands of caring for large herds and the unsettled life of a sojourner in the land God had promised him.

to the site where he had built the altar.

Abram returned to the place between Bethel and Ai where he had previously worshiped the LORD after entering Canaan. Having left Egypt with increased wealth but also renewed tensions in his household, he returned to the place of earlier obedience and worship, remembering God’s promise to give the land to his descendants.

Abram openly worshiped the LORD and sought Him in dependence and faith. His return to the altar showed that God, rather than his possessions or circumstances, remained central to his life.

Now Lot, who was traveling with Abram,

Lot, Abram’s nephew, had remained with him since leaving Haran after the death of Lot’s father. As part of Abram’s household, Lot shared in the journey to Canaan and in the prosperity God granted Abram. Their close association would soon be tested as both households grew too large to remain together.

also had flocks and herds and tents.

Lot possessed substantial livestock and the servants and equipment needed to care for them. His tents reflect the mobile life of a pastoral household moving between grazing lands and water sources. The wealth of both men would make it difficult for them to occupy the same area, leading to their peaceful separation.

Gen 26:14 He owned so many flocks and herds and servants…
Heb 11:9 By faith he dwelt in the promised land as a stranger…

But the land was unable to support both of them

Canaan’s pastures and water sources could not adequately sustain the combined herds, flocks, servants, and tents of Abram and Lot. Though the land was productive, its resources were limited for two large households living in the same area.

Gen 36:7 For their possessions were too great for them…
2Ki 6:1 Now the sons of the prophets said to Elisha,…

while they stayed together,

Abram and Lot had traveled as one family since leaving Haran, but their growing estates created practical pressures that threatened peace between them. Separation became necessary to prevent conflict among those under their care.

Ecc 4:9-10 Two are better than one, because they have a good return…

for they had so many possessions

Their livestock, servants, and goods testify to the prosperity God had granted them. Yet increased wealth also required more grazing land and water, creating competing demands.

Job 1:3 and he owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels…

that they were unable to coexist.

Their difficulty was not personal hostility at first, but the inability of the land to meet the needs of both households. The circumstances prepared the way for Abram and Lot to part peacefully and settle in separate regions.

Jas 4:1-2 What causes conflicts and quarrels among you?…

And there was discord between the herdsmen of Abram and the herdsmen of Lot.

Abram and Lot had been greatly blessed with livestock and possessions, but the land could not easily support both households in the same area. Competition over pasture and water led their herdsmen into conflict. The dispute exposed the practical strain caused by their growing wealth and prepared the way for Abram and Lot to separate peacefully.

At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were also living in the land.

The land was already occupied by established peoples, limiting the available pastureland and increasing the need for Abram and Lot to avoid conflict. Their presence also emphasizes that Abram was living as a sojourner in the land God had promised to give his descendants.

So Abram said to Lot,

Abram, later called Abraham, took the initiative when conflict arose between their households. Though Lot was his nephew, both men had grown wealthy in livestock, servants, and possessions.

Is not the whole land before you?

Abram places the choice before Lot, trusting that the Lord will fulfill His promise to give the land to Abram’s descendants. Though the available pastureland was limited for their combined herds, Abram did not cling to personal advantage.

Deu 11:24 Every place where the sole of your foot treads…

Their households and livestock had grown too large to remain together without continued strife among their herdsmen. Separation preserved peace between the two families and allowed each group to find adequate grazing land.

Gen 36:6 Later, Esau took his wives and sons and daughters…

If you go to the left, I will go to the right;

Jos 1:7 Above all, be strong and very courageous.…
Pro 4:27 Do not swerve to the right or to the left;…

Abram’s willingness to accept either direction reveals his dependence on God rather than on appearances. Lot would choose the well-watered Jordan Valley, near Sodom, while Abram remained in Canaan and continued in the land God had promised him.

So Lot chose the whole plain of the Jordan for himself

Drawn by its abundant water and fertile pasture, Lot chose the region that appeared most prosperous. Its richness resembled the Garden of Eden and the well-watered land of Egypt, but it also included Sodom and Gomorrah, cities marked by great wickedness. Lot’s decision followed what he saw, while Abram trusted God to provide what He had promised.

God Renews the Promise to Abram

After Lot had departed,

Abram’s separation from Lot ended the dispute over pastureland and removed the practical tension caused by their growing households and herds. Lot had chosen the fertile Jordan Valley, while Abram remained in Canaan, trusting God’s direction rather than securing the most attractive land for himself.

Gen 12:1-4 Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country…
Act 7:2-4 And Stephen declared: “Brothers and fathers, listen to me!…
Heb 11:8-9 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place…

the LORD said to Abram,

God spoke again to Abram after the separation, reaffirming that His covenant purposes rested on Abram and his descendants. Though Lot had taken the better-looking territory, Abram had not lost the inheritance God had promised.

Gen 12:7 Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said,…
Gen 15:1 After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram…
Gen 17:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared…

“Now lift up your eyes from the place where you are,

From his position in the land of Canaan, Abram was called to look beyond his immediate circumstances. The land before him belonged ultimately to God, who would give it to Abram’s descendants.

The sweeping view emphasized the breadth of God’s gift. Canaan would become the inheritance of Abram’s offspring, forming the land promised to Israel and demonstrating that God’s purposes would stand despite Abram’s present lack of possession.

Gen 28:14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth,…
Psa 107:3 and gathered from the lands, from east and west,…
Luk 13:29 People will come from east and west and north and south,…

for all the land that you see,

God showed Abram the land of Canaan after Lot chose the Jordan Valley. From the hill country near Bethel, Abram could view territory that would become central to Israel’s history.

Deu 34:4 And the LORD said to him, “This is the land…
Deu 3:27 Go to the top of Pisgah and look to the west…
Deu 1:8 See, I have placed the land before you. Enter and possess…

I will give to you

The land was God’s gift, secured by His covenant rather than Abram’s strength or possession at that time. Abram lived there as a sojourner, trusting God to fulfill what He had promised.

Psa 105:11 I will give you the land of Canaan as the portion…
Gen 17:8 And to you and your descendants I will give the land…
Gen 28:13-14 And there at the top the LORD was standing and saying,…

and your offspring

The promise extended to Abram’s physical descendants through Isaac and Jacob, the people of Israel. Their later settlement in Canaan fulfilled God’s purpose for Abram’s family to become a nation in the land.

Gen 17:7 I will establish My covenant as an everlasting covenant…
Gen 26:3-4 Stay in this land as a foreigner, and I will be with you…
Gen 15:18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram…

forever.

God’s grant of the land was enduring. Israel’s later exile and loss of control over the land did not cancel the covenant promise or God’s faithfulness to Abram’s descendants.

Psa 37:29 The righteous will inherit the land and dwell in it forever.
Isa 60:21 Then all your people will be righteous;…
Ezk 37:25 They will live in the land that I gave to My servant Jacob,…

I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth,

God reaffirmed His covenant with Abram by promising descendants too numerous to count. Though Abram had no son at this time, the Lord pledged that his family would become a great people in the land He had promised. The comparison to the dust emphasizes an earthly, physical multitude arising from Abram’s line.

Gen 28:14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth,…
Isa 48:19 Your descendants would have been as countless as the sand…

so that if one could count the dust of the earth,

The promise rested on God’s power rather than Abram’s circumstances. What appeared impossible to Abram would be accomplished by the Lord, whose purpose for Abram’s household extended beyond one generation.

Num 23:10 Who can count the dust of Jacob or number even a fourth…
Jer 33:22 As the hosts of heaven cannot be counted…

then your offspring could be counted.

Israel’s later growth from the family of Jacob demonstrated the beginning of this fulfillment. The promise also led ultimately to Christ, through whom people from every nation who believe become heirs of the blessing promised to Abraham.

Gen 15:5 And the LORD took him outside and said, “Now look…
Heb 11:12 And so from one man, and he as good as dead,…

Get up and walk around the land,

God directed Abram to survey the territory promised to his descendants. His journey through Canaan visibly marked the land God had set apart for Abram’s family, though Abram himself lived there as a sojourner.

Jos 1:3 I have given you every place where the sole of your foot…
Deu 11:24 Every place where the sole of your foot treads…
Jos 14:9 On that day Moses swore to me, saying…

through its length and breadth,

The command encompassed the whole land, not merely the area surrounding Abram’s encampment. Canaan would become the homeland of Israel and the setting for God’s covenant purposes in their history.

Exo 23:31 And I will establish your borders from the Red Sea……
Jos 1:4 Your territory shall extend from the wilderness and Lebanon…
Num 34:3-12 Your southern border will extend from the Wilderness of Zin…

for I will give it to you.”

God’s promise rested on His own authority and faithfulness. Abram did not yet possess the land, but its future inheritance was certain, extending ultimately to his descendants according to God’s covenant.

Gen 28:13-14 And there at the top the LORD was standing and saying,…
Exo 6:8 And I will bring you into the land that I swore to give…
Jos 24:13 So I gave you a land on which you did not toil……

So Abram moved his tent

Abram continued in obedience to God’s direction, living as a sojourner in the land God had promised to give his descendants. His movements reflected faith in God’s provision rather than permanent security in the land.
