1	Καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα περιεπάτει ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ οὐ γὰρ ἤθελεν ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ περιπατεῖν ὅτι ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἀποκτεῖναι	After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him.	After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him.
2	ἦν δὲ ἐγγὺς ἡ ἑορτὴ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἡ σκηνοπηγία	Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand.	But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near,
3	εἶπον οὖν πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ Μετάβηθι ἐντεῦθεν καὶ ὕπαγε εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν ἵνα καὶ οἱ μαθηταί σου θεωρήσουσιν «τὰ ἔργα» σοῦ ἃ ποιεῖς	So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.	Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do.
4	οὐδεὶς γάρ τι ἐν κρυπτῷ ποιεῖ καὶ ζητεῖ αὐτὸς ἐν παρρησίᾳ εἶναι εἰ ταῦτα ποιεῖς φανέρωσον σεαυτὸν τῷ κόσμῳ	For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.”	No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.”
5	οὐδὲ γὰρ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ ἐπίστευον εἰς αὐτόν	For not even his brothers believed in him.	For even his own brothers did not believe in him.
6	Λέγει οὖν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ὁ καιρὸς ὁ ἐμὸς οὔπω πάρεστιν ὁ δὲ καιρὸς ὁ ὑμέτερος πάντοτέ ἐστιν ἕτοιμος	Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here.	Therefore Jesus told them, “My time is not yet here; for you any time will do.
7	οὐ δύναται ὁ κόσμος μισεῖν ὑμᾶς ἐμὲ δὲ μισεῖ ὅτι ἐγὼ μαρτυρῶ περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ πονηρά ἐστιν	The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.	The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil.
8	ὑμεῖς ἀνάβητε εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν ἐγὼ οὐκ ἀναβαίνω εἰς τὴν ἑορτὴν ταύτην ὅτι ὁ ἐμὸς καιρὸς οὔπω πεπλήρωται	You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.”	You go to the festival. I am not going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come.”
9	Ταῦτα δὲ εἰπὼν αὐτὸς* ἔμεινεν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ	After saying this, he remained in Galilee.	After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.
10	Ὡς δὲ ἀνέβησαν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν τότε καὶ αὐτὸς ἀνέβη οὐ φανερῶς ἀλλὰ ὡς ἐν κρυπτῷ	But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private.	However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret.
11	Οἱ οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ καὶ ἔλεγον Ποῦ ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος	The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?”	Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking, “Where is he?”
12	καὶ γογγυσμὸς περὶ αὐτοῦ ἦν πολὺς ἐν τοῖς ὄχλοις οἱ μὲν ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἀγαθός ἐστιν Ἄλλοι δὲ ἔλεγον Οὔ ἀλλὰ πλανᾷ τὸν ὄχλον	And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.”	Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.”
13	Οὐδεὶς μέντοι παρρησίᾳ ἐλάλει περὶ αὐτοῦ διὰ τὸν φόβον τῶν Ἰουδαίων	Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.	But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.
14	Ἤδη δὲ τῆς ἑορτῆς μεσούσης ἀνέβη Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν καὶ ἐδίδασκεν	About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching.	Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.
15	ἐθαύμαζον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι λέγοντες Πῶς οὗτος γράμματα οἶδεν μὴ μεμαθηκώς	The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?”	The Jews there were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning without having been taught?”
16	Ἀπεκρίθη οὖν αὐτοῖς ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν Ἡ Ἐμὴ διδαχὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὴ ἀλλὰ τοῦ πέμψαντός με	So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.	Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me.
17	ἐάν τις θέλῃ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιεῖν γνώσεται περὶ τῆς διδαχῆς πότερον ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐστιν ἢ ἐγὼ ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ λαλῶ	If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.	Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.
18	ὁ ἀφ’ ἑαυτοῦ λαλῶν τὴν δόξαν τὴν ἰδίαν ζητεῖ ὁ δὲ ζητῶν τὴν δόξαν τοῦ πέμψαντος αὐτὸν οὗτος ἀληθής ἐστιν καὶ ἀδικία ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἔστιν	The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.	Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.
19	Οὐ Μωϋσῆς δέδωκεν* ὑμῖν τὸν νόμον καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐξ ὑμῶν ποιεῖ τὸν νόμον τί με ζητεῖτε ἀποκτεῖναι	Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?”	Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?”
20	Ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ὄχλος Δαιμόνιον ἔχεις τίς σε ζητεῖ ἀποκτεῖναι	The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?”	“You are demon-possessed,” the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?”
21	Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἓν ἔργον ἐποίησα καὶ πάντες θαυμάζετε	Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it.	Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed.
22	διὰ τοῦτο Μωϋσῆς δέδωκεν ὑμῖν τὴν περιτομήν οὐχ ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ Μωϋσέως ἐστὶν ἀλλ’ ἐκ τῶν πατέρων καὶ ἐν σαββάτῳ περιτέμνετε ἄνθρωπον	Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.	Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath.
23	εἰ περιτομὴν λαμβάνει (ὁ) ἄνθρωπος ἐν σαββάτῳ ἵνα μὴ λυθῇ ὁ νόμος Μωϋσέως ἐμοὶ χολᾶτε ὅτι ὅλον ἄνθρωπον ὑγιῆ ἐποίησα ἐν σαββάτῳ	If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well?	Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath?
24	μὴ κρίνετε κατ’ ὄψιν ἀλλὰ τὴν δικαίαν κρίσιν κρίνετε*	Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”	Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”
25	Ἔλεγον οὖν τινες ἐκ τῶν Ἱεροσολυμιτῶν Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὃν ζητοῦσιν ἀποκτεῖναι	Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill?	At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?
26	καὶ ἴδε παρρησίᾳ λαλεῖ καὶ οὐδὲν αὐτῷ λέγουσιν Μή‿ ποτε ἀληθῶς ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἄρχοντες ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός	And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ?	Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Messiah?
27	ἀλλὰ τοῦτον οἴδαμεν πόθεν ἐστίν ὁ δὲ Χριστὸς ὅταν ἔρχηται οὐδεὶς γινώσκει πόθεν ἐστίν	But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.”	But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”
28	Ἔκραξεν οὖν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ διδάσκων ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ λέγων Κἀμὲ οἴδατε καὶ οἴδατε πόθεν εἰμί καὶ ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ οὐκ ἐλήλυθα ἀλλ’ ἔστιν ἀληθινὸς ὁ πέμψας με ὃν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε	So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know.	Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him,
29	ἐγὼ οἶδα αὐτόν ὅτι παρ’ αὐτοῦ εἰμι κἀκεῖνός με ἀπέστειλεν	I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.”	but I know him because I am from him and he sent me.”
30	Ἐζήτουν οὖν αὐτὸν πιάσαι καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐπέβαλεν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν τὴν χεῖρα ὅτι οὔπω ἐληλύθει ἡ ὥρα αὐτοῦ	So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.	At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
31	Ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου δὲ πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν καὶ ἔλεγον Ὁ Χριστὸς ὅταν ἔλθῃ μὴ πλείονα σημεῖα ποιήσει ὧν οὗτος ἐποίησεν	Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”	Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?”
32	Ἤκουσαν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι τοῦ ὄχλου γογγύζοντος περὶ αὐτοῦ ταῦτα καὶ ἀπέστειλαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ὑπηρέτας ἵνα πιάσωσιν αὐτόν	The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.	The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.
33	εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἔτι χρόνον μικρὸν μεθ’ ὑμῶν εἰμι καὶ ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν πέμψαντά με	Jesus then said, “I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me.	Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me.
34	ζητήσετέ με καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσετέ [με] καὶ ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν	You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.”	You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”
35	Εἶπον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πρὸς ἑαυτούς Ποῦ οὗτος μέλλει πορεύεσθαι ὅτι ἡμεῖς οὐχ εὑρήσομεν αὐτόν μὴ εἰς τὴν Διασπορὰν τῶν Ἑλλήνων μέλλει πορεύεσθαι καὶ διδάσκειν τοὺς Ἕλληνας	The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?	The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?
36	τίς ἐστιν ὁ λόγος οὗτος ὃν εἶπεν Ζητήσετέ με καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσετέ [με] καὶ Ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν	What does he mean by saying, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”	What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”
37	Ἐν δὲ τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ μεγάλῃ τῆς ἑορτῆς εἱστήκει ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἔκραξεν λέγων Ἐάν τις διψᾷ ἐρχέσθω πρός με καὶ πινέτω	On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.	On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.
38	ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμέ καθὼς εἶπεν ἡ γραφή Ποταμοὶ ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας αὐτοῦ ῥεύσουσιν ὕδατος ζῶντος	Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”	Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”
39	τοῦτο δὲ εἶπεν περὶ τοῦ Πνεύματος οὗ ἔμελλον λαμβάνειν οἱ πιστεύσαντες εἰς αὐτόν οὔπω γὰρ ἦν Πνεῦμα ὅτι Ἰησοῦς οὐδέπω ἐδοξάσθη	Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.	By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
40	Ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου οὖν ἀκούσαντες τῶν λόγων τούτων ἔλεγον (ὅτι) Οὗτός ἐστιν ἀληθῶς ὁ προφήτης	When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.”	On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”
41	Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός Οἱ δὲ ἔλεγον Μὴ γὰρ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ὁ Χριστὸς ἔρχεται	Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee?	Others said, “He is the Messiah.” Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee?
42	οὐχ ἡ γραφὴ εἶπεν ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος Δαυὶδ καὶ ἀπὸ Βηθλεὲμ τῆς κώμης ὅπου ἦν Δαυὶδ ἔρχεται ὁ Χριστός	Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”	Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?”
43	Σχίσμα οὖν ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ὄχλῳ δι’ αὐτόν	So there was a division among the people over him.	Thus the people were divided because of Jesus.
44	τινὲς δὲ ἤθελον ἐξ αὐτῶν πιάσαι αὐτόν ἀλλ’ οὐδεὶς ἐπέβαλεν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν τὰς χεῖρας	Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.	Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.
45	Ἦλθον οὖν οἱ ὑπηρέται πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ Φαρισαίους καὶ εἶπον αὐτοῖς ἐκεῖνοι Διὰ τί οὐκ ἠγάγετε αὐτόν	The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?”	Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”
46	Ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ ὑπηρέται Οὐδέποτε ἐλάλησεν οὕτως ἄνθρωπος 〈ὡς οὗτος λαλεῖ ὁ ἄνθρωπος〉	The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!”	“No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.
47	Ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν αὐτοῖς οἱ Φαρισαῖοι Μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς πεπλάνησθε	The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived?	“You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted.
48	μή τις ἐκ τῶν ἀρχόντων ἐπίστευσεν εἰς αὐτὸν ἢ ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων	Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him?	“Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?
49	ἀλλὰ ὁ ὄχλος οὗτος ὁ μὴ γινώσκων τὸν νόμον ἐπάρατοί εἰσιν	But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”	No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”
50	Λέγει Νικόδημος πρὸς αὐτούς ὁ ἐλθὼν πρὸς αὐτὸν [τὸ] πρότερον εἷς ὢν ἐξ αὐτῶν	Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them,	Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked,
51	Μὴ ὁ νόμος ἡμῶν κρίνει τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐὰν μὴ ἀκούσῃ πρῶτον παρ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ γνῷ τί ποιεῖ	“Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?”	“Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”
52	Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Μὴ καὶ σὺ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας εἶ ἐραύνησον καὶ ἴδε ὅτι ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας προφήτης οὐκ ἐγείρεται	They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”	They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”
53	Καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν* ἕκαστος εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ	[[They went each to his own house,	Then they all went home,
