1 Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander. So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, Therefore, rid <i>yourselves</i> of all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.
2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: and like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,
3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. If so be ye have tasted that the Lord <i>is</i> gracious. if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord. now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
4 As you come to Him, the living stone, rejected by men but chosen and precious in God’s sight, As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, To whom coming, <i>as unto</i> a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, <i>and</i> precious, And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by people, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him—
5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in Scripture: “See, I lay in Zion a stone, a chosen and precious cornerstone; and the one who believes in Him will never be put to shame.” For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. For <i>this</i> is contained in Scripture: “BEHOLD, I AM LAYING IN ZION A CHOICE STONE, A PRECIOUS CORNERSTONE, AND THE ONE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE PUT TO SHAME.” For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”
7 To you who believe, then, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” Unto you therefore which believe <i>he is</i> precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for unbelievers, “A STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNERSTONE,” Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,”
8 and, “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word— and to this they were appointed. and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, <i>even to them</i> which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. and, “A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE”; <i>for</i> they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this they were also appointed. and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. But ye <i>are</i> a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: But you are A CHOSEN PEOPLE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR <i>G</i><i>OD’S</i> OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Which in time past <i>were</i> not a people, but <i>are</i> now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
11 Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from the desires of the flesh, which war against your soul. Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Dearly beloved, I beseech <i>you</i> as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; Beloved, I urge <i>you</i> as foreigners and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts, which wage war against the soul. Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.
12 Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles that, though they slander you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation. Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by <i>your</i> good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe <i>them,</i> glorify God on the day of visitation. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to the king as the supreme authority, Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority,
14 or to governors as those sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right. or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. 15 For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorance of foolish men. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: For such is the will of God, that by doing right you silence the ignorance of foolish people. For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.
16 Live in freedom, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. As free, and not using <i>your</i> liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. <i>Act</i> as free people, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but <i>use it</i> as bond-servants of God. Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.
17 Treat everyone with high regard: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. Honour all <i>men</i>. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king. Honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king. Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.
18 Servants, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but even to those who are unreasonable. Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. 19 For if anyone endures the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God, this is to be commended. For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. For this <i>is</i> thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. For this <i>finds</i> favor, if for the sake of conscience toward God a person endures grief when suffering unjustly. For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God.
20 How is it to your credit if you are beaten for doing wrong and you endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. For what glory <i>is it</i>, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer <i>for it</i>, ye take it patiently, this <i>is</i> acceptable with God. For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if when you do what is right and suffer <i>for it</i> you patiently endure it, this <i>finds</i> favor with God. But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.
21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His footsteps: For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: For you have been called for this purpose, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you would follow in His steps, To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
22 “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.” He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: <i>H</i><i>E</i> WHO COMMITTED NO sin, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT found IN HIS MOUTH; “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.”
23 When they heaped abuse on Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats, but entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed <i>himself</i> to him that judgeth righteously: and while being abusively insulted, He did not insult in return; while suffering, He did not threaten, but kept entrusting <i>Himself</i> to Him who judges righteously; When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.
24 He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. “By His stripes you are healed.” He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. and He Himself brought our sins in His body up on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness; by His wounds you were healed. “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”
25 For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls. For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
