A Greeting from Peter

Simon Peter,

Formerly a fisherman from Galilee, Peter was called by Jesus and became a leading witness of Christ’s ministry, death, and resurrection. Jesus gave him the name Peter, or Cephas, meaning “rock,” and used him prominently in strengthening the early church.

a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,

Peter joins humility with apostolic authority. Though entrusted with leadership among the apostles, he presents himself as belonging wholly to Christ. His authority rested on his commission as an eyewitness of the risen Lord and a faithful messenger of the gospel.

To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ

Salvation rests upon the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ, who is fully God and Savior. Believers are accepted by God not through personal merit, religious achievement, or ancestry, but through Christ’s righteous work on their behalf.

have received a faith as precious as ours:

Peter writes to believers who share the same saving faith possessed by the apostles. Jew and Gentile alike stand on equal ground before God, having received the same gospel, the same Savior, and the same promise of eternal life.

Php 1:29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ…
Eph 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith…

Grace and peace be multiplied to you

Peter opens with a blessing that joins God’s undeserved favor with the settled wholeness that flows from reconciliation with Him. Grace saves and sustains believers, while peace guards the heart in fellowship with God. Peter asks not merely for these gifts to be present, but for them to abound as believers grow in faith, endure trials, and live under God’s care. Such peace reflects the fullness of shalom: spiritual well-being, restored relationship with God, and confidence in His promises.

1Pe 1:2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father…
Jud 1:2 Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.
Rom 1:7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints…

through the knowledge of God

Grace and peace increase as believers come to know God personally through His revealed truth and faithful covenant love. Saving knowledge is more than information about God; it includes trusting Him, obeying His Word, and recognizing His character in every circumstance. The God who called believers out of darkness makes Himself known through Scripture, through His works, and through the salvation He has accomplished.

and of Jesus our Lord.

Peter closely joins knowledge of God with knowledge of Jesus, presenting the Son as essential to knowing the Father. Jesus is Lord, possessing divine authority and ruling over His people as Savior and King. Confessing Jesus as Lord requires faith in His person, submission to His will, and confidence that He alone brings believers into peace with God.

Partakers of the Divine Nature

His divine power

God’s own power, displayed in creation, in Christ’s resurrection, and in the work of salvation, is the source of the believer’s strength. The Christian life rests on God’s sufficiency rather than human resolve.

for life and godliness

God sustains spiritual life and equips believers to reflect His character in conduct, worship, endurance, and holiness. Godliness is not merely outward morality but a life shaped by reverence for God.

through the knowledge of Him

Such provision is received through a growing personal knowledge of Jesus Christ. Knowing Him brings eternal life and transforms those who trust Him into His likeness.

who called us

Christ takes the initiative in salvation, calling His people out of darkness and into fellowship with Himself. His call establishes both their identity and their purpose..

Rom 8:30 And those He predestined, He also called;…
1Th 2:12 encouraging you, comforting you, and urging you……

by His own glory and excellence.

Christ’s majestic glory and perfect moral excellence reveal the worthiness of the One who calls. He summons believers to share in His glory and to live in a manner consistent with His holy character.

1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood…
2Co 4:6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”…
Exo 33:18-19 Then Moses said, “Please show me Your glory.”…

Through these He has given us His precious and magnificent promises,

God’s divine power and the knowledge of Christ provide every resource necessary for life and godliness. His promises include forgiveness of sins, the gift of the Holy Spirit, Christ’s abiding presence, resurrection, and eternal life. Given within God’s covenant faithfulness and fulfilled in Christ, they reveal the glory and goodness of the One who calls His people to Himself.

so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature,

Believers do not become gods or share God’s eternal essence. Through union with Christ and the indwelling Holy Spirit, they are progressively renewed in holiness, love, righteousness, and obedience. God restores in His redeemed people the likeness for which humanity was created, conforming them to the image of His Son.

Heb 12:10 but God disciplines us for our good, so that we may share…
2Co 3:18 And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory…

now that you have escaped the corruption in the world

Christ delivers those who believe from sin’s condemning power and from the fallen order ruled by rebellion against God. Their rescue is already real through new birth and a changed allegiance, though they still await the final redemption of their bodies and of creation.

Gal 1:4 who gave Himself for our sins to rescue us…
Rom 8:20-21 For the creation was subjected to futility,…

caused by evil desires.

Sinful desires produce moral decay because they turn the heart from God’s will toward self-rule. The Spirit enables believers to resist the flesh, put sin to death, and pursue the holiness that accords with their new life in Christ.

Jas 1:14-15 But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires…
1Jn 2:16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh…

For this very reason,

Peter grounds the believer’s response in the divine power, precious promises, and new life described in the preceding verses. God has provided all that is necessary for life and godliness through the knowledge of Christ. Those who have escaped the corruption of sinful desire are therefore called to live in a manner consistent with the grace they have received.

1Jn 3:3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself…
Rom 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy,…

make every effort

Spiritual growth requires purposeful obedience and perseverance. Salvation is God’s gift, received through faith, yet genuine faith bears fruit in a transformed life. Peter’s command opposes spiritual passivity and prepares believers to stand firm against false teaching and moral compromise.

Heb 12:1-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud…
2Ti 2:15 Make every effort to present yourself approved to God,…

to add to your faith virtue;

Faith in Jesus Christ is the foundation, but faith must be expressed through moral excellence. Virtue reflects a life shaped by God’s holiness, courage, and goodness rather than by the values of the surrounding world. Believers are called to display the character of the One who called them out of darkness into His marvelous light.

Jas 2:18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have deeds.”…
Gal 5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision……
Php 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable,…

and to virtue, knowledge;

Moral zeal must be directed by a growing knowledge of God, His word, and His will. Such knowledge is personal and obedient, enabling believers to discern truth from error and to live wisely before God. Peter later confronts teachers who claimed knowledge while denying the Lord through their conduct; true knowledge produces faithfulness to Christ.

Php 1:9-10 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound…
Col 1:9-10 we have not stopped praying for you and asking God…
Pro 2:6 For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth…

and to knowledge, self-control;

Knowledge of Christ and His will must shape conduct. Self-control, produced by the Holy Spirit, governs desires, words, and actions so that believers do not become slaves to sinful impulses. Such discipline enables purity and obedience amid temptation, reflecting the wisdom of Proverbs and the Spirit’s work described in Galatians 5:22–23.

Php 1:9-10 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound…
1Co 9:25-27 Everyone who competes in the games trains…
Tit 2:11-12 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation…

and to self-control, perseverance;

Self-control must endure over time, especially when obedience brings hardship. Perseverance holds fast to God’s promises through opposition, suffering, and delay, refusing to abandon faith. Trials test and mature believers, as James teaches, and the steadfast endurance of Job and Paul demonstrates confidence in God’s sovereign faithfulness.

Rom 5:3-4 Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings,…
Jas 1:3-4 because you know that the testing of your faith…
Heb 12:1-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud…

and to perseverance, godliness;

Perseverance is to produce a life marked by reverence for God and conformity to His character. Godliness joins worship with practical holiness, directing every part of life toward pleasing the Lord. Believers pursue such holiness because God has called them to be holy, and the Holy Spirit empowers them to live as those who belong to Christ.

2Pe 3:11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way,…
1Ti 4:7-8 But reject irreverent, silly myths. Instead, train…
1Ti 6:11 But you, O man of God, flee from these things…

and to godliness, brotherly kindness;

Devotion to God must bear fruit in devoted care for God’s people. Believers have been brought into one household through faith in Christ, and they are to treat one another with the affection, honor, patience, and practical concern fitting for spiritual family. Such love crosses former divisions of background, status, and nationality, as the early church demonstrated in its shared life and service.

1Ti 6:11 But you, O man of God, flee from these things…
1Pe 3:8 Finally, all of you, be like-minded and sympathetic,…
Tit 2:12 It instructs us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions…

and to brotherly kindness, love.

Brotherly affection is to grow into the self-giving love that reflects God’s character and Christ’s sacrifice. Christian love does not remain limited to those who are easy to love or who belong to the same fellowship; it seeks the good of others, bears wrongs patiently, and acts with mercy and truth. Love crowns the virtues Peter lists because it displays the mature likeness of Christ and fulfills God’s command to love one’s neighbor.

Rom 12:10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.…
Heb 13:1 Continue in brotherly love.
1Th 4:9 Now about brotherly love, you do not need…

For if you possess these qualities

Peter points to the virtues of faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. Christian character is not formed by profession alone but by the active outworking of God’s grace in a believer’s life.

Col 3:12-14 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved…
1Ti 6:11 But you, O man of God, flee from these things…
Gal 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…

and continue to grow in them,

Spiritual maturity is ongoing. Believers are called to press forward in holiness, allowing the life of Christ to produce increasing fruit through obedience, prayer, Scripture, and dependence upon the Holy Spirit.

Eph 4:15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will…
Col 1:10 so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord…
1Pe 2:2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk…

they will keep you from being ineffective

A growing Christian life gives a credible witness to the gospel. Faithfulness in these virtues guards against a stagnant profession that has little influence for Christ or service to others.

1Co 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable.…
Jhn 15:8 This is to My Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit…

and unproductive

Jesus taught that those who abide in Him bear fruit (John 15:5). God intends His people to display lives marked by obedience, love, and useful service rather than remaining barren in spiritual understanding and practice.

Tit 3:14 And our people must also learn to devote themselves…
Jhn 15:5 I am the vine and you are the branches…

in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Knowledge of Christ includes personal trust, submission, and growing fellowship with Him. As believers know the Lord more deeply, His character increasingly shapes their conduct and confirms the transforming reality of the gospel.

Col 2:2-3 that they may be encouraged in heart, knit together in love,…
Php 3:8-10 More than that, I count all things as loss…
Jhn 17:3 Now this is eternal life, that they may know You…

But whoever lacks these traits

Faith must grow into goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. Their absence reveals spiritual stagnation and contradicts the transforming purpose of God’s grace in those who have received Christ.

Jhn 15:2 He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit,…
Jas 2:17 So too, faith by itself, if it does not result…
Heb 5:12-14 Although by this time you ought to be teachers,…

is nearsighted to the point of blindness,

Spiritual blindness fixes attention on present desires and loses sight of God’s promises, coming kingdom, and eternal accountability. Like those who rejected Jesus despite clear evidence of His identity, such a person fails to live in the light already given.

Rev 3:17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have grown wealthy…
1Jn 2:11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness.…
Jhn 9:39-41 Then Jesus declared, “For judgment I have come…

having forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.

Christ’s atoning sacrifice cleanses the believer from former guilt and establishes a new life of grateful obedience. Forgetting this redemption weakens the pursuit of holiness and obscures the mercy that should shape every part of Christian character.

Act 22:16 And now what are you waiting for? Get up…
1Co 6:11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed,…
1Jn 1:7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light,…

Therefore, brothers,

Peter draws a practical conclusion from God’s provision of everything necessary for life and godliness and from the virtues believers are commanded to pursue. Fellow believers belong to one family through faith in Christ and are called to strengthen one another in steadfast obedience.

Rom 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy,…
1Co 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable.…

strive to make your calling and election sure.

God’s calling brings sinners to salvation in Christ, and His election rests in His sovereign grace. Believers do not earn election by good works; rather, diligent growth in holiness confirms the reality of God’s saving work and gives assurance that their profession of faith is genuine. A fruitful life supplies visible evidence of faith, as Jesus taught that a tree is known by its fruit.

Php 2:12-13 Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed…
2Ti 1:9 He has saved us and called us to a holy calling…
1Th 1:4 Brothers who are beloved by God, we know that He has chosen…

For if you practice these things

Faith, moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly affection, and love are to become the continuing pattern of Christian conduct. Such qualities do not arise from self-effort alone, but from God’s power working in those who have escaped the corruption of the world through Christ.

Jhn 13:17 If you know these things, you will be blessed…
Jas 1:22 Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.…
Rom 2:13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous…

you will never stumble,

Persistent obedience guards believers from the spiritual collapse that marks false teachers and empty professions. Peter does not promise freedom from every sin or trial, but stability in the path of faith and preservation from falling away. God keeps His people, and He does so through their diligent reliance on Christ and their growth in godliness.

Pro 3:23-24 Then you will go on your way in safety,…

and you will receive

The promised entrance is certain because God faithfully completes His saving work in those who belong to Christ. Diligence in faith does not earn salvation, but it confirms the reality of God’s calling and preserves believers from a life of spiritual stumbling.

Act 4:12 Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other…
Php 2:9-11 Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place…

Therefore I will always remind you of these things,

Peter commits himself to repeated instruction in the virtues of faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly affection, and love (2 Peter 1:5–7). God’s promises and divine power call believers to diligent growth, not passive familiarity. Repetition served an essential role in Jewish teaching and in the instruction of the early churches, guarding God’s people against spiritual drift and preparing them to recognize error.

2Pe 3:1-2 Beloved, this is now my second letter to you.…
2Ti 2:14 Remind the believers of these things, charging them…
Jhn 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send…

even though you know them

Peter writes to believers who have already received sound apostolic teaching. Knowledge alone, however, does not prevent forgetfulness, temptation, or the influence of false teachers. Israel was repeatedly commanded to remember the Lord’s works and commandments, teaching them diligently within the home and community (Deuteronomy 6:6–9). Mature disciples continue to need the gospel’s truths brought before them.

1Jn 2:20-21 You, however, have an anointing from the Holy One,…
1Jn 2:27 And as for you, the anointing you received from Him…
Rom 15:14 I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves…

and are established in the truth you now have.

The readers possess a settled foundation in the truth of Jesus Christ and the apostolic gospel. Peter seeks to strengthen that foundation as false teachers threaten to distort grace and deny the Lord. Stability in the truth comes through remaining devoted to Christ, His promises, and the teaching delivered by His apostles.

Col 2:7 rooted and built up in Him, established in the faith…
2Ti 3:14 But as for you, continue in the things you have learned…
2Jn 1:2 because of the truth that abides in us…

I think it is right

Peter regarded continued instruction as a solemn responsibility entrusted to him by Christ. The risen Lord had commanded Peter to feed and tend His sheep, and Peter carried out that charge by strengthening believers in the truth.

Php 1:7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you…
Act 15:28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us…
Luk 1:3 Therefore, having carefully investigated everything…

to refresh your memory

Believers need repeated encouragement in truths already received. Scripture warns God’s people not to forget the Lord or drift from His commands. Peter’s reminders guarded the church against false teaching and called Christians to remain firm in the apostolic message.

Jud 1:5 Although you are fully aware of this, I want to remind you…
1Co 4:17 That is why I have sent you Timothy, my beloved…

as long as I live

Peter knew that his earthly ministry would soon end. Life is brief, and the time granted for service to Christ must be used faithfully. His approaching death gave urgency to his desire that believers remain established in the faith.

Psa 104:33 I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise…
Psa 63:4 So I will bless You as long as I live; in Your name…
Psa 146:2 I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing…

in the tent of my body,

Peter described his physical body as a temporary dwelling. The image points to the frailty of mortal life and to the believer’s hope beyond death. Though the earthly tent is taken down, Christ promises resurrection life and an eternal dwelling with God.

2Co 5:4 For while we are in this tent, we groan under our burdens…
2Co 5:6 Therefore we are always confident, although we know…

because I know

Peter writes with settled assurance that his earthly course is nearing its end. His confidence rests in the Lord’s own revelation and gives urgency to his instruction, since he desires believers to remain grounded in the truth after his departure.

2Ti 4:6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering,…
Act 20:25 Now I know that none of you among whom I have preached…

that this tent

Peter describes his physical body as a temporary dwelling. Like Israel’s tents in the wilderness, the body serves for a season but is not the believer’s permanent home. The image points beyond death to the promised resurrection and the eternal dwelling God will provide.

2Co 5:1 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in…
2Co 5:4 For while we are in this tent, we groan under our burdens…
Isa 38:12 My dwelling has been picked up and removed from me…

will soon be laid aside,

Peter understands that death is near. For those who belong to Christ, death does not destroy the person or nullify God’s promises; it marks the laying down of the mortal body in anticipation of resurrection life. Peter’s approaching martyrdom strengthens his appeal for steadfast faith and holy living.

Jesus is Peter’s sovereign Lord and the promised Messiah. Peter’s submission to Christ’s word reflects the authority of the risen Savior over both life and death.

Jesus had foretold Peter’s death after His resurrection, indicating that Peter would glorify God through it (John 21:18–19). Peter therefore faces his end not as an uncertain fate but as the fulfillment of his Lord’s faithful word.

Jhn 21:18-19 Truly, truly, I tell you, when you were young…
Luk 22:33-34 “Lord,” said Peter, “I am ready to go with You…”…

And I will make every effort

Peter resolves to provide believers with a lasting witness to the apostolic message. Knowing that his earthly ministry is nearing its end, he continues to serve Christ through faithful instruction, following the Lord’s charge to strengthen His people.

Heb 4:11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest,…
2Ti 2:15 Make every effort to present yourself approved to God,…

to ensure that after my departure,

Peter speaks of his approaching death with the hope of one who belongs to Christ. Jesus had foretold that Peter would die in a manner that would glorify God (John 21:18–19). His departure, or exodus, would not end his ministry’s influence, for the truth he proclaimed would remain with the church.

2Ti 4:6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering,…
Jhn 16:12-13 I still have much to tell you, but you cannot yet…

you will be able to recall these things

Peter seeks to preserve the foundational realities of salvation: the believer’s calling, growth in godliness, the certainty of Christ’s return, and the trustworthiness of apostolic testimony. The written Word enables later generations to remember and obey the same gospel delivered by Christ’s apostles.

Eyewitnesses of His Majesty

For we did not follow cleverly devised fables

The apostolic proclamation did not arise from religious imagination, pagan mythology, or human speculation. Peter contrasts the historical gospel with the invented accounts circulating throughout the Greco-Roman world and with the distortions promoted by false teachers. Jesus’ death, resurrection, exaltation, and promised return rest on God’s acts in history and His revelation through chosen witnesses.

2Ti 4:4 So they will turn their ears away from the truth…
Tit 1:14 will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the commands…

when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ,

The apostles proclaimed Christ’s divine authority displayed in His miracles, resurrection, and reign, together with His future visible return in glory. His coming will fulfill His promises, judge evil, vindicate His people, and establish His kingdom. Hope in Christ’s return calls believers to steadfast faith and holy conduct.

Mrk 13:26 At that time they will see the Son of Man…
Luk 21:27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming…

but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.

Peter had seen the Lord’s glory on the mountain of Transfiguration with James and John, when Jesus’ face shone and the Father declared Him to be His beloved Son. That revelation gave the apostles a foretaste of the majesty Christ will openly display at His return. Their testimony came from firsthand knowledge of the incarnate Son of God, not from secondhand reports.

Mat 17:1-5 After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John…
Mrk 9:2-7 After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John…

For He received honor and glory from God the Father

Peter recalls the Transfiguration as an eyewitness of Christ’s revealed majesty before Peter, James, and John. On the holy mountain, Jesus’ appearance was transformed, and Moses and Elijah appeared with Him, bearing witness to the Law and the Prophets and to His approaching death in Jerusalem. The Father’s honor and glory publicly confirmed the eternal Son’s authority and the saving mission He came to accomplish. Psalm 2 and Isaiah 42 converge in Jesus: He is both God’s royal Son and the chosen Servant in whom God delights.

Jhn 17:5 And now, Father, glorify Me in Your presence…
Heb 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower…

when the voice came to Him from the Majestic Glory,

The Father spoke from the radiant cloud that overshadowed the disciples, a visible manifestation of God’s holy presence comparable to the glory that filled the tabernacle and Solomon’s temple. The divine voice did not arise from human imagination or apostolic invention; Peter heard it and later testified to it as confirmation of the prophetic word. The same Father who declared Jesus’ identity at His baptism affirmed Him again as He moved toward the cross.

Mrk 9:7 Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them.…
Luk 9:35 And a voice came from the cloud, saying,…

saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Jesus alone stands in the unique relationship of the beloved Son to the Father. The Father’s pleasure rests upon His sinless obedience, His faithful ministry, and His willing submission to the Father’s redemptive purpose. The declaration identifies Him as the Messiah promised in Scripture and calls all who hear Him to receive His authority, trust His work, and heed His word.

And we ourselves heard this voice from heaven

Peter, James, and John personally heard God the Father declare Jesus to be His beloved Son at the Transfiguration. Their testimony rested not on invented accounts or secondhand reports, but on a direct encounter with Christ’s revealed glory. The Father’s voice confirmed the same truth proclaimed at Jesus’ baptism: Jesus is the eternal Son, sent to accomplish the Father’s redemptive purpose.

when we were with Him on the holy mountain.

The mountain became holy because the presence and glory of God were manifested there. Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus, connecting Him to the Law and the Prophets, while the Father commanded the disciples to listen to Him. The Transfiguration foreshadowed Christ’s resurrection, kingdom glory, and return in power. Peter’s remembrance establishes the apostolic witness as reliable and directs believers to the certainty of God’s revelation in Christ.

We also have the word of the prophets as confirmed beyond doubt.

Peter joins the eyewitness testimony of Christ’s majesty at the transfiguration with the enduring witness of Old Testament prophecy. The prophets had foretold the Messiah’s suffering, glory, kingdom, and coming reign; Jesus fulfilled these promises in His life, death, resurrection, and ascension. Moses, David, Isaiah, Daniel, and the other prophets spoke by God’s authority, and their message stands confirmed by the revelation of Christ.

And you will do well to pay attention to it,

Believers are called to give careful, obedient attention to Scripture. Prophetic revelation is not distant history or speculation about the future; it instructs God’s people in truth, exposes error, and strengthens hope. Peter writes amid false teaching, directing the church back to the dependable word God had already given..

Heb 2:1 We must pay closer attention, therefore,…
Pro 4:20-21 My son, pay attention to my words; incline your ear…
Luk 8:18 Pay attention, therefore, to how you listen…

as to a lamp shining in a dark place,

God’s Word provides light in a world darkened by sin, deception, and spiritual blindness. Like a lamp guiding travelers through the night, Scripture directs believers in the way of righteousness and guards them from being led astray. Psalm 119:105 likewise declares that God’s word is a lamp to the feet and a light to the path.

Psa 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Pro 6:23 For this commandment is a lamp, this teaching is a light,…

until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

The coming day points to Christ’s return, when His glory will fully dispel the darkness of the present age. The morning star identifies Christ, who calls Himself “the bright Morning Star” in Revelation 22:16. Until He appears, believers live by the light of God’s prophetic Word; when He comes, faith will give way to sight, and His saving glory will fill His people completely.

Rev 22:16 I, Jesus, have sent My angel to give you this testimony…
Mal 4:2 But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness…
Luk 1:78-79 because of the tender mercy of our God…

Above all,

Peter marks the divine origin of Scripture as essential for the church’s confidence in the prophetic word. Having recalled his eyewitness testimony of Christ’s transfiguration, he directs believers to the equally certain testimony of God spoken beforehand through the prophets.

Jas 5:12 Above all, my brothers, do not swear, not by heaven or earth…
1Pe 4:8 Above all, love one another deeply, because love covers…
Pro 4:23 Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow…

you must understand

Faithful handling of Scripture requires settled conviction that God has spoken. Believers are called to receive prophecy with reverence, seeking its meaning in harmony with God’s revealed purposes rather than adapting it to personal preference.

Neh 8:8 So they read from the Book of the Law of God, explaining it…

that no prophecy of Scripture

The prophetic writings proclaimed God’s truth, exposed sin, called His people to covenant faithfulness, and foretold the coming Messiah and His kingdom. Though written through human servants in particular historical settings, these writings carry God’s authority and form a unified witness to Jesus Christ.

2Ti 3:16-17 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction,…
Act 1:16 Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled…
Heb 1:1-2 On many past occasions and in many different ways,…

comes from one’s own interpretation.

No prophet produced God’s message from personal insight, imagination, or private judgment. The following verse explains that holy men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. Scripture therefore must not be treated as a human invention or bent to support error, but received as God’s trustworthy revelation.

Jer 23:16 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen…
Ezk 13:2-3 Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel…
1Co 2:13-14 And this is what we speak, not in words…

For no such prophecy was ever brought forth by the will of man,

Prophecy did not arise from human imagination, religious ambition, or personal insight. God Himself initiated and disclosed His word through chosen servants. False prophets spoke presumptuously and faced judgment because they claimed divine authority for messages God had not given (Deuteronomy 18:20–22).

Jer 23:16 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen…
Ezk 13:2 Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel…
Jer 23:21 I did not send these prophets, yet they have run…

but men spoke from God

The prophets remained real men with distinct circumstances and personalities, yet they delivered God’s revelation rather than their own opinions. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the other prophets called God’s people to repentance, warned of judgment, and proclaimed the coming redemption God would accomplish. The Lord revealed His counsel through His servants the prophets (Amos 3:7).

2Sa 23:2 The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me;…
Act 1:16 Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled…
Act 3:21 Heaven must take Him in until the time comes…

as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit directed the prophets so that their words faithfully communicated God’s truth. Like a ship borne along by the wind, they were moved by a power outside themselves. Scripture therefore possesses divine authority and is God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16). The same Spirit later guided Christ’s apostles into truth, preserving God’s testimony concerning the Savior and His gospel (John 16:13).

Ezk 8:3 He stretched out what looked like a hand…
Ezk 3:12 Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard…
Act 8:39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit…
