Psalms 90
Berean Study Bible
A prayer of Moses the man of God.

Moses wrote this prayer as Israel wandered in the wilderness under God’s judgment for unbelief. As the leader who brought Israel out of Egypt and received God’s Law at Sinai, he knew both the holiness of God and the frailty of man. His intercession for the nation gives the psalm the character of a sober appeal to the Lord.

Lord, You have been our dwelling place

Israel had no permanent home during its years in the desert, yet God Himself remained their constant refuge and security. He preserved them through every stage of their history, from the patriarchs to the wilderness generation.

God’s faithfulness did not depend on the stability or obedience of any one generation. The covenant God who sustained Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Moses would continue to preserve His people according to His promises.

For in Your sight

God’s view is not limited by the passing generations that weigh so heavily on human experience. Moses contrasts the eternal Creator with mortal people, whose lives unfold within the boundaries God has appointed.

a thousand years

Even an age of human history lies fully before God. A thousand years symbolically portrays a vast span of time from a human perspective, yet it does not diminish God’s awareness, power, or purpose.

What appears long and significant to humanity passes quickly before the everlasting God. Human life and history are brief, while God remains unchanged.

but by evening it fades and withers.

In the dry climate of the ancient Near East, grass could quickly lose its freshness under the day’s heat. The image portrays the swift decline of human strength and life, contrasting mankind’s mortality with God’s enduring existence.

Isa 40:7-8 The grass withers and the flowers fall when…
Jas 1:11 For the sun rises with scorching heat…

For we are consumed by Your anger

Moses speaks for the generation of Israel judged in the wilderness after persistent unbelief and rebellion against the Lord. Their years of wandering, marked by death and loss, revealed that God’s holiness does not overlook sin.

Ezk 22:31 So I have poured out My indignation upon them…
Nam 1:6 Who can withstand His indignation? Who can endure…
Deu 32:22 For a fire has been kindled by My anger,…

and terrified by Your wrath.

Israel had witnessed God’s judgment against disobedience, and His wrath inspired genuine fear because it was neither empty nor distant. The wilderness generation stood as a warning that sin brings real consequences and that all people remain accountable before God.

Rev 6:16-17 And they said to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us…
Psa 76:7 You alone are to be feared. When You are angry,…
Heb 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands…

You have set our iniquities before You,

Moses recognizes that Israel’s sins were fully known to God. During the wilderness years, the nation repeatedly rebelled against His commands, and their failures were not overlooked or forgotten. God’s judgment was righteous because He had seen both their actions and their hearts.

Jer 2:22 Although you wash with lye and use an abundance of soap,…
Jer 16:17 For My eyes are on all their ways. They are not hidden…
Psa 130:3 If You, O LORD, kept track of iniquities,…

our secret sins in the light of Your presence.

Hidden wrongdoing cannot remain concealed before the holy God. His presence exposes sins known only to the individual, showing that accountability before Him reaches beyond outward conduct to inward motives and private acts.

Psa 19:12 Who can discern his own errors? Cleanse me…
Heb 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight;…
1Co 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time;…

For all our days decline in Your fury;

Human life is brief and shadowed by the judgment sin brought into the world. Moses wrote in light of Israel’s wilderness generation, many of whom died under God’s discipline because of unbelief and rebellion. Their shortened lives displayed the seriousness of disobeying the holy God.

Psa 78:33 So He ended their days in futility, and their years…
Psa 102:10 because of Your indignation and wrath…
Psa 102:3 For my days vanish like smoke, and my bones burn…

we finish our years with a sigh.

Life often closes with weakness, grief, and the awareness that earthly days quickly pass. The sigh reflects mortality’s burden and the longing for the restoration God promised. For those who trust Him, death does not have the final word, for God has provided salvation and the hope of resurrection.

Psa 31:10 For my life is consumed with grief and my years with groaning…
Job 3:24 I sigh when food is put before me, and…
Lam 1:21 People have heard my groaning, but there is no one…

The length of our days is seventy years—

Human life is ordinarily brief, even at its fullest measure. Moses, who witnessed an entire generation die in the wilderness, sets mortal years against God’s eternity and the consequences of sin.

Job 14:5 Since his days are determined and the number of his months…
Psa 39:4-5 Show me, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days.…
Ecc 6:12 For who knows what is good for a man during the few days…

or eighty if we are strong—

Exceptional health and strength may extend life somewhat, but even added years remain limited and uncertain.

Jos 14:10-11 Now behold, as the LORD promised, He has kept me alive…
Deu 34:7 Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died…
Psa 92:14 In old age they will still bear fruit; healthy and green…

yet their pride is but labor and sorrow,

The years are marked by burdensome work, weakness, loss, and grief. Human accomplishments cannot remove the hardship that entered the world through sin.

Jer 20:18 Why did I come out of the womb to see trouble and sorrow…
Ecc 2:22-23 For what does a man get for all the toil and striving…
Job 14:1-2 “Man, who is born of woman, is short of days…”…

for they quickly pass,

Life moves swiftly toward its end, giving little ground for self-confidence or delay in seeking wisdom.

Job 7:6-7 My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle;…
Jas 4:14 You do not even know what will happen tomorrow!…
Psa 103:15-16 As for man, his days are like grass—he blooms…

and we fly away.

Death brings earthly life to a sudden close as the body returns to dust and the spirit returns to God.

Psa 55:6-8 I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!…
Ecc 12:7 before the dust returns to the ground from which it came.…
Psa 146:4 When his spirit departs, he returns to the ground;…

Who knows the power of Your anger?

No one can fully measure the force of God’s judgment against sin. Israel’s history, the flood, and the destruction of Sodom show that His holiness is not indifferent to human rebellion. Mortal people see only part of His judgments and cannot grasp their full weight.

Psa 76:7 You alone are to be feared. When You are angry,…
Nam 1:6 Who can withstand His indignation? Who can endure…
Rev 6:17 For the great day of Their wrath has come,…

Your wrath matches the fear You are due.

God’s judgment is consistent with His supreme authority and holiness. The fear due to Him is reverent awe, expressed in obedience and acknowledgment of His rule. His wrath is never arbitrary; it is the righteous response of the Creator and Judge to sin.

Mal 1:6 A son honors his father, and a servant his master.…
2Co 5:11 Therefore, since we know what it means to fear the Lord…
Heb 12:28-29 Therefore, since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom,…

So teach us to number our days,

Moses asks God to make His people mindful of the shortness and uncertainty of human life. In the wilderness, Israel saw an entire generation fall under God’s judgment, a sober reminder that man is frail and dependent on the Lord.

Psa 39:4-5 Show me, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days.…
Job 14:5 Since his days are determined and the number of his months…
Jas 4:14 You do not even know what will happen tomorrow!…

that we may present a heart of wisdom.

Awareness of mortality should produce lives ordered by God’s truth rather than earthly pursuits. Wisdom is shown in reverence for the Lord, obedience to His commands, and choices shaped by eternal realities.

1Ki 3:9 Therefore give Your servant an understanding heart…
Pro 2:10-11 For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge……
Jas 1:5 Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God,…

Return, O LORD!

Moses appeals for God to turn again toward Israel with favor after the judgment and hardship described earlier in the psalm. In the wilderness, Israel depended wholly on the Lord’s presence for protection, direction, and life.

Psa 80:14 Return, O God of Hosts, we pray! Look down from heaven…
Lam 5:21 Restore us to Yourself, O LORD, so we may return;…
Isa 63:17 Why, O LORD, do You make us stray from Your ways…

How long will it be?

The suffering of God’s people had made His discipline seem prolonged. Moses asks God to bring an end to His anger and restore His help according to His mercy.

Psa 13:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. How long, O LORD?…
Hab 1:2 How long, O LORD, must I call for help…
Rev 6:10 And they cried out in a loud voice, “How long, O Lord…

Have compassion on Your servants.

Though Israel had sinned, they remained the people God had chosen and called to serve Him. The request rests on God’s covenant mercy and seeks relief, forgiveness, and renewed blessing.

Psa 123:2 As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master…
Psa 86:16 Turn to me and have mercy; grant Your strength……
Psa 119:124 Deal with Your servant according to Your loving devotion,…

Satisfy us in the morning with Your loving devotion,

Moses asks God to meet His people with mercy at the beginning of each day after reflecting on human frailty and God’s judgment. Israel’s life in the wilderness showed that lasting security and contentment could not come from circumstances, strength, or time, but from the Lord’s faithful care. God’s covenant love provides the only true answer to the brevity and trouble of human life.

Psa 143:8 Let me hear Your loving devotion in the morning,…
Psa 63:3-5 Because Your loving devotion is better than life,…
Lam 3:22-23 Because of the loving devotion of the LORD…

that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.

God’s favor would replace the sorrow brought by sin and judgment with enduring rejoicing. The request looks beyond a brief improvement in circumstances to a lifetime marked by confidence in God’s presence and faithfulness. Such joy finds its fullest assurance in Christ, whose saving work gives His people hope that extends beyond their earthly days.

Psa 92:4 For You, O LORD, have made me glad by Your deeds;…
Psa 16:11 You have made known to me the path of life;…
Isa 35:10 So the redeemed of the LORD will return…

Make us glad for as many days as You have afflicted us,

Israel asks God to replace the sorrow He permitted with corresponding joy. The prayer recognizes that the Lord’s discipline is just, yet it also appeals to His mercy and covenant faithfulness. After the generation that endured wilderness judgment, the people needed renewed strength and blessing in the land God had promised.

Psa 126:1-3 When the LORD restored the captives of Zion,…
Jer 31:13 Then the maidens will rejoice with dancing,…
Psa 30:11-12 You turned my mourning into dancing; You peeled off…

for as many years as we have seen evil.

The request reflects prolonged hardship, including the consequences of sin, wilderness wandering, and the frailty of human life. Moses asks that the years marked by trouble would be answered by years in which God’s favor, protection, and restoring work are plainly seen among His people.

Psa 71:20-21 Though You have shown me many troubles and misfortunes,…
Lam 3:31-33 For the Lord will not cast us off forever.…
1Pe 5:10 And after you have suffered for a little while,…

May Your work be shown to Your servants,

Moses asks God to make His saving power evident again among His people. Israel had seen His work in the exodus, the wilderness, and the establishment of His covenant, yet the present generation needed renewed evidence of His mercy and direction.

Psa 111:6 He has shown His people the power of His works…
Psa 103:7 He made known His ways to Moses, His deeds to the people…
Exo 33:13 Now if indeed I have found favor in Your sight…

and Your splendor to their children.

The prayer extends beyond those living to their descendants, asking that future generations would know the majesty of the God who preserved and led Israel. God’s faithfulness was not limited to one generation but remained the foundation of His people’s hope.

Psa 78:4 We will not hide them from their children…
Jol 1:3 Tell it to your children; let your children…
Deu 4:9 Only be on your guard and diligently watch yourselves…

May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us;

Moses closes the psalm with a prayer that God’s gracious presence and approval would remain with His people. After reflecting on human frailty and sin, he appeals to the covenant Lord for mercy and blessing.

Psa 67:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments. A Psalm.…
Num 6:24-26 ‘May the LORD bless you and keep you;…
Psa 80:3 Restore us, O God, and cause Your face to shine upon us,…

establish for us the work of our hands—

Israel’s labor and future depended on God’s provision and purpose. Human effort cannot secure lasting results apart from His blessing.

Pro 16:3 Commit your works to the LORD and your plans…
Deu 28:12 The LORD will open the heavens, His abundant storehouse,…
Isa 26:12 O LORD, You will establish peace for us.…

yes, establish the work of our hands!

The repetition heightens the urgency of the request. Moses asks God to give permanence and value to the work of His people, so that their lives would serve His purposes rather than pass away without lasting fruit.

Zec 4:9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation…
Psa 128:2 For when you eat the fruit of your labor,…
1Co 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable.…
