Berean Study Bible I Will Exalt You, My God and KingThis psalm is devoted wholly to the worship of God and stands as the only psalm bearing this title. The Hebrew term for “praise,” tehillah, is related to hallelujah, meaning “praise the Lord.” Its structure and content call God’s people to recognize His greatness, goodness, and faithful rule. 1Ch 16:8-10 Give thanks to the LORD; call upon His name;… Of David. David wrote as Israel’s king and as a man who had known God’s help through danger, sin, repentance, victory, and suffering. His words unite personal devotion with the public worship of the nation. 1Ch 16:7 On that day David first committed to Asaph and his associates… I will exalt You, my God and King; David honors the Lord as his own God while confessing Him as the true King over Israel and all creation. Though David sat on Israel’s throne, he recognized that his authority was subject to God’s greater rule. Psa 99:5 Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at His footstool… I will bless Your name forever and ever. David pledges continual honor to the Lord’s revealed character and deeds. God’s worthiness of praise does not change, and His reign extends beyond David’s life and kingdom. Dan 2:20 Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,… Every day I will bless You, David presents worship as a settled daily practice, not an occasional response to prosperity or deliverance. In Israel, the rhythm of each day included public sacrifices and private devotion, yet this commitment reaches beyond outward observance to personal gratitude and trust in God. Psa 34:1 Of David, when he pretended to be insane before Abimelech,… and I will praise Your name God’s name stands for all He has revealed of Himself—His holiness, mercy, righteousness, power, and faithfulness. Praise acknowledges that His works and rule are worthy of honor in every circumstance. Psa 54:6 Freely I will sacrifice to You; I will praise Your name… forever and ever. The devotion of God’s people is directed toward the eternal King. David’s resolve looks beyond his own lifetime to the unending reign of God and the everlasting worship of those who belong to Him. Rev 5:13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth… Great is the LORD The LORD alone is supreme in power, holiness, wisdom, and authority. His works in creation, deliverance, judgment, and covenant faithfulness reveal a greatness no rival can equal. Psa 95:3 For the LORD is a great God, a great King above all gods. and greatly to be praised; His character and deeds deserve continual, public praise. Israel gathered in worship to remember His mighty acts and confess His rule over every generation. 1Ch 16:25 For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised;… His greatness is unsearchable. No one can measure the full extent of God’s majesty, wisdom, power, or mercy. He makes Himself known through His word and works, yet remains infinite beyond human understanding. Job 5:9 The One who does great and unsearchable things,… One generation will commend Your works to the next, God’s deeds were to be remembered and taught within Israel’s families and community. Parents recounted the Exodus, the wilderness provision, the conquest of Canaan, and God’s covenant faithfulness so their children would know the Lord and the history of His people. Psa 78:4 We will not hide them from their children… and will proclaim Your mighty acts— God’s power was displayed in creation, judgment, deliverance, and His rule over nations. Israel’s testimony distinguished the Lord from the false gods of surrounding peoples. His mighty acts reached their fullest revelation in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, through whom God accomplished salvation. Psa 71:18 Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God,… the glorious splendor of Your majesty. David exalts the Lord as the supreme King whose beauty, holiness, and authority surpass every earthly ruler. God’s majesty is displayed in His rule over creation, His righteous judgments, and His faithful care for His people. Psa 104:1 Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God,… And I will meditate on Your wondrous works. David resolves to consider God’s mighty acts, including His creation, deliverance, provision, and preservation of Israel. Remembering what God has done strengthens confidence in His continuing faithfulness and points to His saving work fulfilled in Christ. Psa 119:27 Make clear to me the way of Your precepts;… They will proclaim the power of Your awesome deeds, God’s people are to speak openly of His mighty acts, including His deliverance of Israel from Egypt, His preservation of them in the wilderness, and His victories over their enemies in the land. Such deeds revealed His sovereign power and inspired reverent fear. The worship of Israel was therefore not private or silent; each generation was responsible to recount what the Lord had done. Psa 78:4 We will not hide them from their children… and I will declare Your greatness. David joins this testimony personally, resolving to make God’s majesty known. The shift from “they” to “I” highlights personal responsibility in worship and testimony. The Lord’s greatness encompasses His omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence, displayed in His rule over creation, His faithfulness to His covenant, His judgment of evil, and His mercy toward those who seek Him. Personal praise strengthens the public witness of God’s people and directs attention to the greatness ultimately revealed in Christ. Deu 32:3 For I will proclaim the name of the LORD.… They will extol the fame of Your abundant goodness God’s people publicly recount His generous acts of mercy, provision, and deliverance. Israel knew His goodness through the Exodus, the wilderness provision, and the gift of the promised land. His goodness is not limited or occasional but flows from His faithful character. Psa 31:19 How great is Your goodness which You have laid up… and sing joyfully of Your righteousness. Worship rises from confidence that the Lord always acts with perfect justice and faithfulness. His righteousness assures His people that He keeps His promises, judges evil rightly, and saves those who trust in Him. Psa 51:14 Deliver me from bloodguilt, O God, the God of my salvation… The LORD is gracious and compassionate, God’s dealings with Israel reveal His merciful character. Though His people repeatedly sinned and rebelled, He provided forgiveness, deliverance, and a way to remain in covenant with Him. His compassion is seen supremely in Christ, who came to save sinners and to bear their judgment. Exo 34:6 Then the LORD passed in front of Moses and called out:… slow to anger God does not judge rashly or without warning. Throughout Israel’s history, He gave time for repentance before bringing discipline or judgment. His patience—erek apayim, literally “long of nostrils,” a metaphor for being slow to wrath—displays both His mercy and the seriousness of refusing His call to turn from sin. Num 14:18 The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in loving devotion… and abounding in loving devotion. God’s love is faithful, active, and enduring. He keeps His promises and does not abandon those He has called to Himself. His steadfast love reaches its fullest expression in Jesus Christ, whose death secured redemption for all who believe. Psa 103:8 The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger… The LORD is good to all; God’s goodness belongs to His unchanging character and is displayed in His care for the world He created. Unlike the false gods of surrounding nations, who were thought to be limited, unpredictable, or tied to particular peoples, the LORD rules over all and does good beyond Israel alone. His providence sustains human life and creation, even among those who do not acknowledge Him. Psa 100:5 For the LORD is good, and His loving devotion endures… His compassion rests on all He has made. God’s merciful care extends throughout His creation. He sees the needs of His creatures and acts with patience, provision, and restraint. His compassion does not deny His justice or remove His judgment against sin, but it reveals His willingness to preserve life and call people to turn to Him. Psa 36:6 Your righteousness is like the highest mountains;… All You have made will give You thanks, Creation bears witness to God’s power, wisdom, and goodness. The heavens, earth, seas, and all living things exist by His will and ultimately point back to their Maker. This anticipates the day when creation, now burdened by the effects of sin, will share in the restoration God has ordained. Psa 148:7-13 Praise the LORD from the earth, all great sea creatures… O LORD, Thanksgiving is directed to Yahweh, the eternal covenant God who revealed Himself to Israel and remains faithful to all He has promised. He is exalted above creation yet personally involved with His people. Psa 92:1 A Psalm. A song for the Sabbath day. It is good to praise… and Your saints will bless You. Those who belong to God respond to His works with praise, gratitude, and faithful obedience. Israel’s faithful worshipers and all believers in Christ are set apart to honor Him, looking forward to the everlasting worship of God in His kingdom. Psa 134:1 A song of ascents. Come, bless the LORD, all you servants… They will tell of the glory of Your kingdom God’s faithful people proclaim the majesty of His reign, which extends over all creation and will be fully revealed in the coming kingdom. His glory is seen in His righteous rule, His saving works, and His unfailing purpose to establish His dominion forever. 1Ch 29:11-12 Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power… and speak of Your might, They also declare the power by which God creates, judges, delivers, and preserves His people. His mighty acts in history reveal that no ruler, nation, or force can hinder His purposes or overturn His reign. Exo 15:6 Your right hand, O LORD, is majestic in power;… to make known to men God’s people are called to declare His works openly, so that all nations may know the true God and His rule over the earth. 1Ch 16:8 Give thanks to the LORD; call upon His name;… Your mighty acts His power has been displayed in creation, the deliverance of Israel, judgment upon evil, and the preservation of His people. Above all, Christ’s death and resurrection reveal God’s victory over sin and death. Psa 106:2 Who can describe the mighty acts of the LORD… and the glorious splendor of Your kingdom. God’s kingdom is marked by His perfect authority, righteousness, and majesty. David’s earthly throne anticipated the everlasting reign of Christ, whose kingdom will be fully revealed when He makes all things new. 1Ch 29:11-12 Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power… Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, God’s reign stands above every human empire, none of which endures. His rule has no beginning or end and will reach its full visible expression when all opposition is removed. Dan 4:3 How great are His signs, how mighty His wonders!… and Your dominion endures through all generations. Every generation remains under God’s authority, regardless of changing rulers, nations, or circumstances. Israel’s history of conquest, exile, and restoration confirmed that earthly powers rise and fall while the Lord remains sovereign. Lam 5:19 You, O LORD, reign forever; Your throne endures… The LORD is faithful in all His words God fulfills what He has promised. His covenant faithfulness preserves His people and guarantees the completion of His purposes. 1Ki 8:56 Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel… and kind in all His actions. His rule is never harsh or arbitrary. God’s power is displayed in mercy, provision, patience, and salvation, revealing His care for all He has made. Psa 25:10 All the LORD’s ways are loving and faithful… The LORD upholds all who fall The Lord faithfully sustains those brought low by weakness, failure, sorrow, or adversity. His care extends to all who depend on Him, preserving them when they cannot stand by their own strength. Psa 37:24 Though he falls, he will not be overwhelmed… and lifts up all who are bowed down. He also raises those crushed by affliction, oppression, or grief, restoring them with mercy and strength. Psa 146:8 the LORD opens the eyes of the blind,… The eyes of all look to You, All living creatures depend on God for life and sustenance. Israel’s agrarian society understood this dependence through the rains, harvests, and herds that sustained daily life. The psalmist portrays creation as waiting upon its Maker, who governs and preserves all He has made. Psa 123:2 As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master… and You give them their food God supplies the ordinary needs of His creatures, just as He fed Israel in the wilderness and sustained the land through its harvests. His provision displays His continual care over the world. Psa 136:25 He gives food to every creature. His loving devotion… in season. Food comes according to the order God established in creation. The seasons, rains, and harvests unfold under His rule, providing what is needed at the appointed time. Mat 24:45 Who then is the faithful and wise servant,… You open Your hand God is pictured as the generous Creator who freely gives to what He has made. His provision reflects both His power to sustain creation and His care for it. Psa 104:27-28 All creatures look to You to give them their food… and satisfy the desire He supplies the needs of His creatures, providing food, shelter, and the means of life according to His wise ordering of the world. Human need ultimately depends on God’s provision. Psa 107:9 For He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry… of every living thing. God’s care extends beyond Israel and humanity to every creature. The order and abundance of creation testify that all life is sustained by His hand. Job 12:10 The life of every living thing is in His hand… The LORD is righteous in all His ways God’s actions are always just, faithful, and morally perfect. His judgments, providence, commands, and discipline arise from His holy character and never contain error or wrongdoing. His righteousness establishes the standard by which all human conduct is measured. Deu 32:4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect; all His ways are just.… and kind in all His deeds. God’s righteousness is never harsh or detached from mercy. His works display steadfast love toward His creation and covenant people, seen in His provision, deliverance, patience, and forgiveness. His kindness reached its fullest expression in the sending of His Son, through whom God extends salvation to those who believe. Exo 34:6 Then the LORD passed in front of Moses and called out:… The LORD is near to all who call on Him, God is not distant from those who seek Him. Throughout Israel’s history, He heard the cries of His people, delivered them from trouble, and remained faithful to His covenant. His nearness speaks of His attentive presence and readiness to act according to His will. Deu 4:7 For what nation is great enough to have a god… to all who call out to Him in truth. God receives those who come before Him with sincere faith rather than empty words or outward religion. David’s life showed both the reality of human failure and the mercy God extends to a repentant heart. True prayer rests on honest dependence upon the Lord and submission to His truth. Psa 51:6 Surely You desire truth in the inmost being;… He fulfills the desires of those who fear Him; God grants the desires of those who reverence Him and order their lives according to His will. His provision reflects His covenant faithfulness to His people, as Israel experienced when He sustained them in the wilderness and led them toward the land He promised. Psa 37:4 Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give… He hears their cry and saves them. God is attentive to the cries of His faithful people and acts to deliver them. He heard Israel’s suffering in Egypt and rescued them from bondage, showing that He is near to those who depend on Him and able to save them from trouble. Psa 34:17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears;… The LORD preserves all who love Him, God faithfully guards and watches over those who belong to Him. Love for the Lord is shown in trust, obedience, and reverence, not merely in outward profession. His care does not promise freedom from hardship, but it assures His people that their lives are secure in His keeping and that He will sustain them according to His purpose. Psa 97:10 Hate evil, O you who love the LORD! He delivers them… but all the wicked He will destroy. Those who persist in rebellion against God face His righteous judgment. The wicked may prosper for a time, but their way ends in ruin because they reject the God who gives life and demands justice. The contrast underscores both the security of the faithful and the certainty of God’s final judgment against sin. Psa 37:38 But the transgressors will all be destroyed;… My mouth will declare the praise of the LORD; David closes the psalm with a personal resolve to proclaim God’s greatness. Praise is not merely inward gratitude but spoken acknowledgment of the LORD’s works, goodness, righteousness, and kingship. Psa 51:15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. let every creature bless His holy name The psalm widens from David’s own worship to all living things. Every creature belongs to the Creator and is called to honor Him for who He is. His holy name represents His perfect character, authority, and faithfulness. Psa 103:1 Of David. Bless the LORD, O my soul;… forever and ever. God’s praise has no end because His reign has no end. The worship begun by His people in this life anticipates the everlasting praise that will mark His eternal kingdom.
