The Circumcision and Passover at Gilgal

Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan

The Amorites occupied much of the central highlands and were among the strongest peoples of Canaan, with fortified cities and established military power. Their territory lay directly in Israel’s path as the nation entered the land promised to Abraham.

Jos 12:7-8 And these are the kings of the land that Joshua…
Jos 10:5 So the five kings of the Amorites joined forces…
Deu 7:1 When the LORD your God brings you into the land…

and all the Canaanite kings along the coast

The coastal rulers controlled productive farmland, ports, and trade routes. News of Israel’s crossing reached both inland and coastal regions, showing that the whole land recognized the approaching threat.

Jos 9:1 Now when news of this reached all the kings…
Num 13:29 The Amalekites live in the land of the Negev;…
Jdg 1:31 Asher failed to drive out the inhabitants of Acco, Sidon,…

heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan

God’s stopping of the Jordan publicly demonstrated that He was leading Israel into Canaan. As at the Red Sea, the miracle showed that no natural barrier or military power could prevent the fulfillment of His promise.

Psa 114:3 The sea observed and fled; the Jordan turned back;
Jos 2:10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters…
2Ki 2:8 And Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up,…

before the Israelites until they had crossed over,

Israel crossed safely into the land at the height of the river’s flood season, marking the end of the wilderness years and the beginning of the conquest.

Exo 14:21-22 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,…
Psa 66:6 He turned the sea into dry land; they passed…
Heb 11:29 By faith the people passed through the Red Sea…

their hearts melted and their spirits failed for fear of the Israelites.

The Canaanite kings lost courage before Israel had fought a major battle in the land. Their fear confirmed that God had already gone before His people and had shaken the nations who opposed them.

Jos 2:11 When we heard this, our hearts melted…
Deu 2:25 This very day I will begin to put the dread and fear…
Exo 15:15-16 Then the chiefs of Edom will be dismayed;…

At that time

After Israel crossed the Jordan and camped at Gilgal, the nation stood at the threshold of Canaan. The wilderness generation had passed away, and the people now needed to be prepared to enter the land promised to their fathers.

Jos 4:19-20 On the tenth day of the first month the people went up…
Deu 27:2-3 And on the day you cross the Jordan into the land…
Deu 10:1 At that time the LORD said to me, “Chisel out…

the LORD said to Joshua,

God directed Joshua as Israel’s appointed leader, confirming that the coming actions were required by His covenant.

Jos 1:1-2 Now after the death of His servant Moses,…
Jos 6:2 And the LORD said to Joshua, “Behold, I have delivered…
Jos 8:1 Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid…

“Make flint knives

Flint provided a sharp cutting edge and was used for this sacred purpose, preserving the ancient manner of circumcision associated with Israel’s fathers.

Exo 4:25 But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her son’s foreskin…
Gen 17:10-12 This is My covenant with you and your descendants after you,…
Gen 17:23 On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael…

and circumcise the sons of Israel

The men born during the wilderness years had not received the covenant sign given to Abraham. Their circumcision marked their full identification with the covenant people before the conquest began.

Gen 17:14 But if any male is not circumcised, he will be…
Exo 12:48 If a foreigner resides with you and wants to celebrate…
Lev 12:3 And on the eighth day the flesh of the boy’s foreskin……

once again.”

Israel renewed an obligation neglected during the wilderness journey, restoring the covenant sign among the generation that would possess the land.

Deu 30:6 The LORD your God will circumcise your hearts…
Jer 4:4 Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and remove the foreskins…
Col 2:11 In Him you were also circumcised, in the putting off…

So Joshua made flint knives

Joshua prepared the instruments needed to carry out the Lord’s command. Flint produced a sharp cutting edge and was readily available, fitting the wilderness setting and the solemn purpose of the occasion.

Exo 4:25-26 But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her son’s foreskin…
Gen 17:23 On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael…

and circumcised the sons of Israel

The males born during Israel’s wilderness years had not received the covenant sign. Before the nation proceeded against Jericho, they were set apart anew as the people of God and restored to the covenant obligation neglected by the previous generation.

Gen 17:10-14 This is My covenant with you and your descendants after you,…
Exo 12:48-49 If a foreigner resides with you and wants to celebrate…
Lev 12:3 And on the eighth day the flesh of the boy’s foreskin……

at Gibeath-haaraloth.

The place was named Gibeath-haaraloth, meaning “Hill of the Foreskins,” in remembrance of the circumcision carried out there. Located near Gilgal, Israel’s first camp in the land, it marked the nation’s preparation before beginning the conquest.

Jos 4:19-20 On the tenth day of the first month the people went up…
Jos 4:23-24 For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan…
1Sa 11:14-15 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal”…

Now this is why Joshua circumcised them:

Circumcision marked Israel’s covenant relationship with God, established with Abraham. Before the conquest of Canaan, Joshua led the new generation in renewing this covenant sign and setting themselves apart for the Lord.

Gen 17:10-14 This is My covenant with you and your descendants after you,…
Exo 12:48 If a foreigner resides with you and wants to celebrate…
Lev 12:3 And on the eighth day the flesh of the boy’s foreskin……

All those who came out of Egypt—

The generation delivered from Egyptian slavery had witnessed God’s mighty acts in the exodus and wilderness.

Exo 12:41 At the end of the 430 years, to the very day…
Exo 13:18 So God led the people around by the way of the wilderness…
Num 33:3 On the fifteenth day of the first month,…

all the men of war—

These were the adult men counted for military service, the generation originally expected to enter and possess the land.

Deu 2:14-15 The time we spent traveling from Kadesh-barnea…
Num 26:64-65 Among all these, however, there was not one…

had died on the journey in the wilderness

Because they refused to trust God at Kadesh-barnea, that generation was judged to die in the wilderness during the forty years of wandering.

Num 14:29-35 Your bodies will fall in this wilderness…
Psa 106:24-27 They despised the pleasant land; they did not believe…
Deu 1:34-35 When the LORD heard your words, He grew angry…

after they had left Egypt.

Israel’s deliverance from Egypt began their journey toward the Promised Land, but the land was entered by their children, who now stood ready to obey God under Joshua’s leadership.

Deu 8:2-4 Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you…
Deu 29:5 For forty years I led you in the wilderness…
Num 32:13 The anger of the LORD burned against Israel,…

Though all who had come out were circumcised,

All who came out of Egypt were circumcised, having received the covenant sign given to Abraham and required for participation in Passover. Their circumcision marked them as members of the covenant people whom God redeemed from slavery.

Exo 12:43-49 And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the statute…
Gen 17:10-14 This is My covenant with you and your descendants after you,…
Exo 4:24-26 Now at a lodging place along the way, the LORD met Moses…

none of those born in the wilderness on the journey from Egypt had been circumcised.

The generation born during Israel’s forty years of discipline had not received this sign. Before entering the land, they needed to be circumcised at Gilgal, restoring covenant obedience and identifying the new generation as the people prepared to receive the inheritance God had promised.

Num 14:29-34 Your bodies will fall in this wilderness…
Deu 1:39 And the little ones you said would become captives…
Deu 2:14-16 The time we spent traveling from Kadesh-barnea…

For the Israelites had wandered in the wilderness forty years,

Israel’s forty years in the wilderness fulfilled God’s judgment after the people refused to enter Canaan in unbelief. The wilderness became the setting in which the generation delivered from Egypt was tested, disciplined, and replaced by their children.

Num 14:33-34 Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness…
Deu 8:2 Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you…
Deu 29:5 For forty years I led you in the wilderness…

until all the nation’s men of war who had come out of Egypt had died,

The fighting men counted after the exodus had seen God’s power in Egypt, at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness, yet they rejected His command to take the land. Except for Joshua and Caleb, that generation died before Israel entered Canaan.

Deu 2:14 The time we spent traveling from Kadesh-barnea…
Num 14:29-30 Your bodies will fall in this wilderness…
Num 26:64-65 Among all these, however, there was not one…

since they did not obey the LORD.

Their failure was not merely fear of Canaan’s inhabitants but rebellion against God’s clear command and promise. Their unbelief kept them from receiving what God had prepared for them.

Deu 1:26-27 But you were unwilling to go up; you rebelled…
Deu 9:23-24 And when the LORD sent you out from Kadesh-barnea…
Psa 106:24-26 They despised the pleasant land; they did not believe…

So the LORD vowed never to let them see the land

God’s judgment was certain because He had declared it. The delay in entering Canaan did not cancel His purpose for Israel, but it showed the seriousness of rejecting His word.

Deu 1:35-36 Not one of the men of this evil generation…
Num 14:23 Not one will ever see the land I swore to give their fathers…
Heb 3:18-19 And to whom did He swear they would never enter His rest?…

He had sworn to their fathers to give us,

The land remained the covenant inheritance promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God preserved that promise through the next generation despite the unbelief of their fathers.

Exo 6:8 And I will bring you into the land that I swore to give…
Gen 15:18-21 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram…
Gen 12:7 Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said,…

a land flowing with milk and honey.

Canaan was a fertile and productive land, able to support abundant flocks, herds, and crops. Its richness displayed God’s provision and the blessing He had promised to give Israel.

Exo 3:8 I have come down to rescue them from the hand of Egyptians…
Exo 33:3 Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey.…
Num 13:27 And they gave this account to Moses: “We went…

And He raised up their sons in their place,

God preserved Israel by bringing forward the generation born during the forty years of wilderness wandering. Their parents, who had left Egypt, died in the wilderness because of unbelief and disobedience. Yet God remained faithful to His promise and prepared their children to enter the land He had given to Abraham’s descendants.

Num 14:31 But I will bring your children into the land…
Deu 1:39 And the little ones you said would become captives…

and these were the ones Joshua circumcised.

Under Joshua’s leadership, the new generation received the covenant sign first given to Abraham. Before Israel took possession of Canaan, the nation was set apart anew as the people belonging to the Lord.

Gen 17:23-27 On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael…
Lev 12:3 And on the eighth day the flesh of the boy’s foreskin……

Until this time they were still uncircumcised,

The generation born in the wilderness had not received circumcision. The covenant practice had been neglected during Israel’s years of judgment and wandering.

Gen 17:14 But if any male is not circumcised, he will be…
Exo 12:48-49 If a foreigner resides with you and wants to celebrate…

since they had not been circumcised along the way.

Their circumcision at Gilgal marked the end of the wilderness period and their readiness to proceed in obedience as they entered the Promised Land.

Deu 8:2-4 Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you…
Deu 29:5 For forty years I led you in the wilderness…

And after all the nation had been circumcised,

Israel renewed the covenant sign neglected during the wilderness years. Before taking possession of Canaan, the new generation was marked as God’s covenant people, set apart in obedience to Him.

Gen 17:23-27 On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael…
Gen 34:24-25 All the men who went out of the city gate…
Exo 12:48 If a foreigner resides with you and wants to celebrate…

they stayed there in the camp

Israel remained at Gilgal, their first encampment in the Promised Land near the Jordan. From this place they would begin the conquest of Canaan, but they would proceed only after submitting to God’s command.

Jos 4:19 On the tenth day of the first month the people went up…
Exo 19:2 After they had set out from Rephidim, they entered…
Num 2:2-3 The Israelites are to camp around the Tent of Meeting…

until they were healed.

The men needed time to recover before Israel could move forward. Their delay placed the nation in a vulnerable position, yet God preserved them and prepared them for the tasks ahead.

Jer 30:17 But I will restore your health and heal your wounds,…
Psa 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Exo 15:26 If you will listen carefully to the voice of the LORD…

Then the LORD said to Joshua,

God confirmed Joshua’s leadership as Israel entered the land and renewed its covenant commitment at Gilgal.

Jos 3:7 Now the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I will begin…
Jos 6:2 And the LORD said to Joshua, “Behold, I have delivered…
Jos 1:1 Now after the death of His servant Moses,…

“Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.”

After the new generation was circumcised, the shame connected with Israel’s slavery, wilderness judgment, and uncircumcised condition was removed. Israel now stood in the Promised Land as the covenant people God had preserved and restored.

Num 14:13-16 But Moses said to the LORD, “The Egyptians will hear of it,…
Isa 25:8 He will swallow up death forever. The Lord GOD…
Deu 9:28 Otherwise, those in the land from which You brought us out…

So that place has been called Gilgal to this day.

Gilgal, meaning “to roll,” became Israel’s first camp in Canaan and a lasting memorial of God’s faithfulness in bringing His people out of Egypt and into the land He promised them.

1Sa 11:14-15 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal”…
1Sa 13:4 And all Israel heard the news: “Saul has attacked an outpost…
1Sa 7:16 Every year he would go on a circuit from Bethel to Gilgal…

On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month,

Israel observed Passover at the appointed time, remembering the night God delivered their fathers from Egypt. The same feast that began before the Exodus now marked their entrance into the land God had promised.

Exo 12:6 You must keep it until the fourteenth day of the month…
Num 9:3 You are to observe it at the appointed time, at twilight…
Lev 23:5 The Passover to the LORD begins at twilight…

while the Israelites were camped at Gilgal

Gilgal was Israel’s first major camp west of the Jordan and served as a place of renewal after the crossing, circumcision, and covenant commitment.

Jos 4:19 On the tenth day of the first month the people went up…
Jos 4:20 And there at Gilgal Joshua set up the twelve…

on the plains of Jericho,

On the plains of Jericho, near the first fortified Canaanite city they would face, Israel focused first on worship and remembering God’s past deliverance.

Jos 4:13 About 40,000 troops armed for battle crossed over…
Num 22:1 Then the Israelites traveled on and camped in the plains…

they kept the Passover.

This was Israel’s first Passover celebration in Canaan, affirming that the God who redeemed them from slavery had also brought them into their inheritance. The sacrificed lamb pointed forward to Christ, whose death provides deliverance from sin.

Ezr 6:19 On the fourteenth day of the first month,…
2Ch 35:1 Then Josiah kept the Passover to the LORD in Jerusalem,…
Num 9:5 and they did so in the Wilderness of Sinai,…

The day after the Passover,

Israel began to enjoy the provision of Canaan immediately after commemorating the Lord’s deliverance from Egypt. Their wilderness years had ended, and God’s promise to bring them into a fruitful land was being fulfilled.

Num 33:3 On the fifteenth day of the first month,…
Lev 23:5-6 The Passover to the LORD begins at twilight…
Num 28:16-17 The fourteenth day of the first month is…

on that very day,

Their obedience in keeping the Passover was followed by a new stage of provision. The change from manna to the food of the land marked their transition from wandering to settlement.

Exo 12:17 So you are to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread,…
Exo 12:41-42 At the end of the 430 years, to the very day…
Exo 12:51 And on that very day the LORD brought the Israelites out…

they ate unleavened bread

The unleavened bread belonged to the Passover observance and recalled Israel’s hurried departure from Egypt. It connected their present inheritance with the redemption that had made it possible.

Exo 12:8 They are to eat the meat that night, roasted over the fire…
Deu 16:3 You must not eat leavened bread with it; for seven days…
Exo 12:15 For seven days you must eat unleavened bread.…

and roasted grain

Grain from the land provided a simple, immediate meal as Israel entered Canaan. They were now sustained by the harvests of the land God had given them.

Lev 2:14 If you bring a grain offering of firstfruits to the LORD,…
Rut 2:14 At mealtime Boaz said to her, “Come over here;…
1Sa 17:17 One day Jesse said to his son David, “Take this…

from the produce of the land.

Canaan’s abundance confirmed the Lord’s faithfulness. The manna that had sustained Israel for forty years would cease, because they now had the provision of the Promised Land.

Lev 23:10-11 “Speak to the Israelites and say, ‘When you enter the land”…
Deu 26:1-2 When you enter the land that the LORD your God…
Deu 8:7-10 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land,…

And the day after they had eaten from the produce of the land,

Israel began to live from the abundance of Canaan immediately after observing Passover at Gilgal. Having entered the land promised to their fathers, they ate its grain and experienced God’s provision in the place He had prepared for them.

Num 15:18-20 Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When you enter…
Deu 26:1-2 When you enter the land that the LORD your God…
Lev 23:14 You must not eat any bread or roasted or new grain…

the manna ceased.

For forty years, manna had sustained the nation in the wilderness. Its cessation marked the end of that wilderness provision and the beginning of life in the land, where Israel would cultivate and harvest what God had given them.

Exo 16:35 The Israelites ate manna forty years…
Neh 9:20 You gave Your good Spirit to instruct them.…
Psa 78:24-25 He rained down manna for them to eat; He gave them grain…

There was no more manna for the Israelites,

The supply did not fail prematurely; it ended when its purpose had been fulfilled. God had provided daily in the wilderness and now supplied His people through the fertile land of Canaan.

Deu 8:3 He humbled you, and in your hunger He gave you manna…
Jhn 6:31-35 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness…
Psa 105:40 They asked, and He brought quail and satisfied them…

so that year they began to eat the crops of the land of Canaan.

Israel’s first harvest meals confirmed that they had entered and begun to possess the promised inheritance. The transition from manna to Canaan’s produce signaled the close of their wandering and the beginning of settlement in the land.

Deu 8:7-10 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land,…
Deu 11:10-12 For the land you are entering to possess is not like Egypt,…
Neh 9:25 They captured fortified cities and fertile land…

The Commander of the LORD’s Army

Now when Joshua was near Jericho,

Israel had crossed the Jordan and entered the land God promised them. Jericho stood as the first fortified Canaanite city in their path, guarding access to the central highlands. Its coming defeat would show that Israel’s victory depended on the Lord rather than military strength.

Jos 6:1 Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the Israelites.…
Luk 18:35 As Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting…
Luk 19:1 Then Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.

he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him

Joshua encountered a heavenly commander at a decisive moment before the battle. The appearance assured him that the Lord Himself was present and directing Israel’s conquest.

Gen 18:2 And Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby.…
Num 22:31 Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw…
Dan 10:5 I lifted up my eyes, and behold, there was a certain man…

with a drawn sword in His hand.

The sword showed that the Lord was prepared to fight for His people and to execute judgment on the Canaanites. Israel’s battle against Jericho was part of God’s larger purpose for the land.

Num 22:23 When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD…
1Ch 21:16 When David lifted up his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD…

Joshua approached Him and asked,

Joshua responded with courage and discernment, seeking to identify the armed figure before him.

Exo 3:3-4 So Moses thought, “I must go over and see…
Jdg 13:11 So Manoah got up and followed his wife.…
Gen 18:23 Abraham stepped forward and said, “Will You really…

“Are You for us or for our enemies?”

Joshua understood that the coming conflict required divine help, yet he still viewed the situation in terms of opposing armies. The answer that follows would make clear that the Lord was not enlisted under Israel’s command; Joshua and Israel were to submit to Him.

Exo 32:26 So Moses stood at the entrance to the camp…
Mat 12:30 He who is not with Me is against Me, …
Luk 11:23 He who is not with Me is against Me, …

“Neither,” He replied.

The Commander does not come as an ally in a merely human conflict but as the representative of God’s sovereign purpose. Israel’s victory will depend on the LORD’s presence and command, not on Joshua’s military strength.

Deu 10:17 For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords,…
Act 10:34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now truly understand…
Rom 2:11 For God does not show favoritism.

“I have now come as Commander of the LORD’s army.”

He stands over the armies of heaven and comes to direct the conquest of Jericho. His arrival assures Joshua that the battle belongs to the LORD. By receiving worship, He is shown to be more than an angel, a divine appearance understood as the pre-incarnate Christ.

1Ch 21:16-17 When David lifted up his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD…
Exo 23:20-23 Behold, I am sending an angel before you to protect you…
2Ki 6:16-17 “Do not be afraid,” Elisha answered, “for those who are with us”…

Then Joshua fell facedown in reverence

Joshua recognizes the holiness and authority of the One before him. Israel’s leader takes the place of a servant before the true Commander of the coming campaign.

Num 22:31-35 Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw…
Gen 17:3 Then Abram fell facedown, and God said to him,
Ezk 1:28 The appearance of the brilliant light all around Him…

and asked Him, “What does my Lord have to say to His servant?”

Joshua submits himself to the LORD’s instruction, ready to receive the command that will govern Israel’s next action.

1Sa 3:10 Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before,…
1Ki 3:9 Therefore give Your servant an understanding heart…
Luk 1:38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered.…

The Commander of the LORD’s army replied,

Joshua stood before a divine commander who represented the LORD’s own authority over Israel’s coming battle. The encounter made clear that the conquest of Canaan would proceed under God’s direction, not merely through Israel’s military strength.

Num 22:31-35 Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw…
1Ch 21:16-18 When David lifted up his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD…

“Take off your sandals,

Joshua received the same command given to Moses when God appeared at the burning bush. Removing his sandals acknowledged reverence before the holy God.

Exo 3:5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals”…
Act 7:33 Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals…

for the place where you are standing is holy.”

The ground was holy because the LORD was present. As Israel prepared to enter the land promised to Abraham’s descendants, God Himself affirmed His presence and authority over the task ahead.

Exo 19:12-13 And you are to set up a boundary for the people…
Gen 28:16-17 When Jacob woke up, he said, “Surely the LORD…

And Joshua did so.

Joshua responded in immediate obedience, submitting to the LORD before leading Israel against Jericho and the cities of Canaan.

Exo 40:16 Moses did everything just as the LORD had commanded him.
Gen 6:22 So Noah did everything precisely as God had commanded him.
