Jeremiah 28

Hananiah’s False Prophecy

This was Av, corresponding roughly to July or August. The month later became associated with the destruction of both temples, though that catastrophe still lay ahead for Judah.

Hananiah delivered his claim in the temple, the center of Judah’s worship and national life, giving his words an appearance of divine authority.

The confrontation was public. Priests and worshipers heard both Hananiah’s promise of deliverance and Jeremiah’s contrary proclamation of coming judgment.

Hananiah declared that Nebuchadnezzar’s domination of Judah had ended and that the exiles and temple vessels would soon return. His message directly contradicted the warning God had given through Jeremiah that Babylon’s rule would continue for seventy years.

Jer 27:12 And to Zedekiah king of Judah I spoke the same message:…
Jer 25:12 But when seventy years are complete, I will punish…
Jer 50:18 Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…

Within two years

Hananiah predicted that Babylon’s power over Judah would quickly end, giving the people hope that the crisis would soon pass. His message directly opposed Jeremiah’s warning that Judah would remain under Babylonian rule for many years.

He promised that Jerusalem and its temple would soon regain what had been lost. The prospect of restored worship and national stability appealed to a people shaken by invasion and exile.

and carried to Babylon.

The vessels remained in Babylon as visible evidence of Judah’s subjection. Hananiah’s promise of their swift return proved false, while Jeremiah’s message of coming judgment was fulfilled.

And I will restore to this place Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim king of Judah,

Jeconiah, also called Jehoiachin, had surrendered to Nebuchadnezzar and was taken to Babylon in 597 BC after reigning only three months. His captivity, along with that of leading citizens and craftsmen, marked a major stage in Judah’s subjection to Babylon. As a Davidic king, his return would have represented the restoration of Judah’s royal line.

2Ki 25:27-30 On the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month…
Jer 29:10 For this is what the LORD says: When Babylon’s seventy years…
Jer 24:5-6 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…

along with all the exiles from Judah who went to Babylon,’

Hananiah promised that the deportees and the temple treasures taken in the first Babylonian campaign would soon return. The exiles’ removal from Jerusalem had deeply disrupted Judah’s national life, worship, and leadership.

2Ch 36:22-23 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia,…
Ezr 1:1-4 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia,…
Jer 29:14 I will be found by you, declares the LORD, …

declares the LORD,

Hananiah spoke as though he carried the LORD’s authority. Yet the following context shows that this message was false; the LORD had not promised a return within two years.

Jer 27:11 But the nation that will put its neck under the yoke…
Ezk 12:25 I, the LORD, will speak whatever word I speak…
Jer 33:7 I will restore Judah and Israel from captivity…

‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’”

Babylon’s yoke described Judah’s forced submission to Nebuchadnezzar. Hananiah’s prediction directly contradicted Jeremiah’s warning that Judah must serve Babylon for the appointed time. The yoke would eventually be broken, but not according to Hananiah’s timetable or through his message.

Jer 30:8 On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts,…
Ezk 34:27 The trees of the field will give their fruit,…
Nam 1:13 For I will now break their yoke from your neck and tear away…

Then the prophet Jeremiah replied

Jeremiah answered as the Lord’s true prophet, prepared to confront Hananiah’s claim of a swift end to Babylonian rule.

Jer 26:12-15 But Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people,…
1Ki 22:14 As surely as the LORD lives, I will speak…
2Ch 18:13 But Micaiah said, “As surely as the LORD lives…

to the prophet Hananiah

Hananiah claimed prophetic authority while declaring a message contrary to the judgment God had announced through Jeremiah.

Jer 23:16-17 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen…
Deu 18:20-22 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…
Ezk 13:2-3 Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel…

in the presence of the priests and all the people

The dispute took place before Judah’s religious leaders and the gathered worshipers, making both messages subject to public scrutiny.

Jer 26:8-11 and as soon as he had finished telling all the people…
2Ki 23:2 And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people…
2Ch 34:30-31 And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people…

who were standing in the house of the LORD.

In the temple, where God’s name was honored, Jeremiah’s response exposed the seriousness of claiming to speak for the Lord falsely.

Jer 26:2 This is what the LORD says: Stand in the courtyard…
1Ki 8:14 And as the whole assembly of Israel stood there,…
2Ch 6:3-4 And as the whole assembly of Israel stood there,…

“Amen!” Jeremiah said.

Jeremiah wished Hananiah’s prediction were true, because the return of the exiles and temple vessels would spare Judah further suffering. His “Amen,” meaning “truly” or “so be it,” expressed this hope. Yet he knew that the message contradicted the warnings God had given through him.

1Ki 1:36 “Amen,” replied Benaiah son of Jehoiada.…
Neh 8:6 Then Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God…
1Ch 16:36 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,…

“May the LORD do so!

Only the LORD could bring about such a restoration. Jeremiah’s response expressed both his desire for mercy and his submission to God’s authority.

1Sa 3:17 “What was the message He gave you?” Eli asked.…
2Sa 3:9 May God punish Abner, and ever so severely,…
2Sa 3:35 Then all the people came and urged David to eat something…

May the LORD fulfill the words you have prophesied,

Hananiah’s words would be proven true only if God caused them to happen. Jeremiah would soon make clear that a prophet’s message must be tested by its fulfillment.

Jer 1:12 “You have observed correctly,” said the LORD,…
1Ki 8:56 Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel…
Jos 21:45 Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel…

and may He restore the articles of His house

Nebuchadnezzar had carried temple vessels from Jerusalem to Babylon, a visible sign of Judah’s defeat and God’s judgment. Their return would mark the restoration of worship at the temple.

Ezr 1:7 King Cyrus also brought out the articles…
Ezr 6:5 Furthermore, the gold and silver articles of the house…
Ezr 1:11 In all, there were 5,400 gold and silver articles.…

and all the exiles back to this place from Babylon.

Hananiah promised a quick return, but the captivity would continue according to God’s appointed time. Jeremiah longed for the people’s restoration, even while faithfully declaring the judgment they had brought upon themselves.

Jer 29:10 For this is what the LORD says: When Babylon’s seventy years…
Jer 29:14 I will be found by you, declares the LORD, …
2Ch 36:22-23 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia,…

Nevertheless, listen now to this message

Jeremiah contrasts God’s true word with Hananiah’s false assurance that Babylon’s power would soon be broken. Though Hananiah spoke peace, Jeremiah called the people to hear what the Lord had actually declared.

Amo 7:16 Now, therefore, hear the word of the LORD. You say:…
Jer 7:2 “Stand in the gate of the house of the LORD and proclaim…
1Ki 22:19 Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the LORD:…

I am speaking in your hearing

Jeremiah delivered the message openly to Hananiah rather than speaking privately or indirectly. His words placed both prophets’ claims before the people, where the outcome would reveal whether either man had truly been sent by God.

Deu 5:1 Then Moses summoned all Israel and said to them:…
Exo 24:7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it…
Deu 31:11 when all Israel comes before the LORD your God…

and in the hearing of all the people.

The gathered community witnessed the confrontation and was responsible to recognize the difference between a prophet who spoke God’s word and one who spoke from his own desire. Judah’s leaders and people alike would bear the consequences of accepting or rejecting the Lord’s warning.

Jer 36:10 From the chamber of Gemariah son of Shaphan the scribe,…
2Ki 23:2 And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people…
Jos 8:35 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded…

The prophets of old who preceded you and me

Jeremiah appeals to the established history of Israel’s prophets, who spoke God’s word despite opposition. Their ministry confirmed that true prophecy was measured by faithfulness to God’s revealed purposes, not by popular or reassuring predictions.

Zec 1:4-6 Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets…
Zec 7:7 Are these not the words that the LORD proclaimed…
2Ch 36:15-16 Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers,…

prophesied war, disaster, and plague

Earlier prophets repeatedly warned that rebellion, idolatry, injustice, and covenant unfaithfulness would bring judgment. Such announcements were not personal predictions but declarations of God’s righteous response to sin.

Jer 42:17 So all who resolve to go to Egypt to reside there will die…
Jer 21:7 ‘After that,’ declares the LORD, ‘I will hand over……
Jer 14:12 Although they may fast, I will not listen to their cry;…

against many lands and great kingdoms.

God’s authority extends beyond Judah and Israel to every nation and ruler. The prophets announced judgment wherever nations exalted themselves, practiced wickedness, or opposed God’s purposes.

Jer 25:15-29 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me:…
Jer 18:7-10 At any time I might announce that a nation or kingdom…
Jer 1:10 See, I have appointed you today over nations and kingdoms…

As for the prophet who prophesies peace,

Hananiah had promised relief from Babylonian rule and the return of the exiles within two years. Such assurances appealed to a frightened nation, but they contradicted the judgment Jeremiah had announced. True prophets were often rejected because they delivered God’s warning rather than the message people preferred.

Jer 6:14 They dress the wound of My people with very little care,…
Ezk 13:10 Because they have led My people astray, saying, ‘Peace,’…

only if the word of the prophet comes true

The fulfillment of a prophet’s message revealed whether he had spoken by God’s authority. Jeremiah did not deny that peace could come; he insisted that Hananiah’s promise could be trusted only if it occurred as foretold.

Deu 18:21-22 You may ask in your heart, “How can we recognize a message…
1Sa 3:19 And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him,…

will the prophet be recognized as one the LORD has truly sent.”

Hananiah’s death later that year confirmed Jeremiah’s warning and exposed his claim as false. Jeremiah’s words were vindicated as Babylon’s domination continued and Jerusalem eventually fell.

Num 16:28 Then Moses said, “This is how you will know”…
Ezk 33:33 So when it comes to pass—and surely it will come…

Then the prophet Hananiah

Hananiah publicly presented himself as a prophet, but he contradicted the word God had given through Jeremiah. He assured the people that Babylon’s power would soon be broken, offering a message of peace when God had declared judgment.

Jer 23:16-17 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen…
Ezk 13:2-3 Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel…
Deu 18:20-22 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…

took the yoke off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet

Jeremiah had worn the yoke as God’s sign that Judah and the surrounding nations were to submit to Babylon. Hananiah’s removal of it was a deliberate public rejection of Jeremiah’s warning and of the submission God required.

Jer 27:2 This is what the LORD said to me: “Make for yourself a yoke…
Jer 27:12 And to Zedekiah king of Judah I spoke the same message:…
Deu 28:48 you will serve your enemies the LORD will send against you…

and broke it.

By breaking the yoke—a dramatic gesture meant to convey liberation and freedom—Hananiah dramatized his claim that Babylonian rule would end within two years. His act could not alter God’s purpose; the wooden yoke would be replaced with an iron one, and Hananiah’s false message would soon be exposed.

Jer 30:8 On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts,…
Lev 26:13 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land…
Nam 1:13 For I will now break their yoke from your neck and tear away…

And in the presence of all the people Hananiah proclaimed,

Hananiah publicly opposed Jeremiah in the temple, where priests, officials, and worshipers could hear him. His setting and audience gave his words the appearance of authority and invited popular support for his message.

Jer 26:7 Now the priests and prophets and all the people…
Amo 7:12-13 And Amaziah said to Amos, “Go away, you seer!…
1Ki 22:10 Dressed in royal attire, the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat…

“This is what the LORD says:

Claiming divine authority to speak for the LORD, Hananiah placed his prediction on the same ground as Jeremiah’s warnings. The issue was not whether God had spoken, but which prophet truly represented Him.

Jer 23:16 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen…
Ezk 13:6-7 They see false visions and speak lying divinations.…
Deu 18:20-22 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…

‘In this way, within two years I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon

Hananiah promised that Babylon’s control would soon end. Nebuchadnezzar had already carried away temple vessels and leading citizens, and the people naturally desired a quick reversal of their humiliation and loss. His prediction directly opposed the judgment Jeremiah had announced.

Jer 27:2 This is what the LORD said to me: “Make for yourself a yoke…
Jer 27:12 And to Zedekiah king of Judah I spoke the same message:…
Jer 25:11-12 And this whole land will become a desolate wasteland…

off the neck of all the nations.’”

Babylon’s power extended over many surrounding peoples, and Hananiah declared that all would be freed from its rule. His message offered immediate political hope, but it encouraged resistance to the discipline God had decreed through Babylon.

Jer 27:8 As for the nation or kingdom that does not serve…
Jer 27:11 But the nation that will put its neck under the yoke…
Nam 1:13 For I will now break their yoke from your neck and tear away…

At this, Jeremiah the prophet went on his way.

Jeremiah did not answer Hananiah immediately. He left the gathering, awaiting the LORD’s response and the fulfillment that would reveal whether Hananiah’s words were true.

Mat 10:14 And if anyone will not welcome you or heed your words…
Mrk 6:11 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to you,…
Act 13:51 So they shook the dust off their feet in protest…

But shortly after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke off his neck,

Hananiah had publicly broken the wooden yoke, symbolizing submission and servitude, that Jeremiah wore at the Lord’s command, rejecting Jeremiah’s warning that Judah must submit to Babylon. His action dramatized his false promise that Babylon’s power would end within two years. The broken yoke did not alter God’s judgment or disprove Jeremiah’s message.

Jer 27:2-12 This is what the LORD said to me: “Make for yourself a yoke…
Lev 26:13 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land…
Deu 13:1-3 If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you…

the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:

God answered Hananiah’s public defiance by giving Jeremiah a further message. The Lord’s word confirmed Jeremiah’s authority and exposed Hananiah’s prediction as false, showing that God alone determined Judah’s future.

Jer 7:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD…
Jer 18:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
Jer 26:1 At the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah…

“Go and tell Hananiah

Jeremiah was sent directly to confront Hananiah, whose name means “Yahweh is gracious,” whose public prediction of Babylon’s swift defeat contradicted God’s warning that Judah would remain under Babylonian rule. Hananiah’s assurances encouraged the people to reject the discipline God had appointed.

2Ki 19:20 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah:…
Isa 37:21 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah:…

that this is what the LORD says:

Jeremiah spoke with divine authority, not personal opinion. The issue was whether Judah would submit to God’s revealed judgment or follow a message that promised relief without repentance.

1Ki 21:19 Tell him that this is what the LORD says:…
2Ki 1:16 And Elijah said to King Ahaziah, “This is what the LORD says…

‘You have broken a yoke of wood,

Hananiah had broken the wooden yoke Jeremiah wore, a symbol of subjugation and servitude under Babylon’s temporary, lighter burden over Judah and the surrounding nations. His action pictured the removal of Babylon’s power, but it falsely represented God’s will.

Jer 27:2 This is what the LORD said to me: “Make for yourself a yoke…
Jer 27:12 And to Zedekiah king of Judah I spoke the same message:…

but in its place you have fashioned a yoke of iron.’

Hananiah’s false sign would not remove Judah’s bondage. Instead, Babylon’s domination would become more severe and unavoidable. The iron yoke portrayed the firmness of God’s judgment after the nation refused His word.

Deu 28:48 you will serve your enemies the LORD will send against you…
1Ki 12:11 Whereas my father burdened you with a heavy yoke,…
2Ch 10:11 Whereas my father burdened you with a heavy yoke,…

For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:

God speaks with the authority of the ruler of heaven’s armies and the covenant God of Israel. Though Judah and the surrounding nations had rebelled against Him, His purposes and promises remained certain.

Jer 7:3 Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel:…
Jer 25:8 Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Isa 1:24 Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel,…

‘I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations

Babylon’s domination would be severe and unavoidable. Unlike a wooden yoke that could be broken, an iron yoke pictured a bondage no nation could cast off by its own strength.

Deu 28:48 you will serve your enemies the LORD will send against you…
Jer 27:12 And to Zedekiah king of Judah I spoke the same message:…
Jer 27:2 This is what the LORD said to me: “Make for yourself a yoke…

to make them serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon,

Nebuchadnezzar’s military power and imperial expansion were under God’s sovereign direction. The Babylonian king was God’s instrument for judging Judah and the nations that resisted His command.

Jer 27:6 So now I have placed all these lands under the authority…
2Ki 24:1 During Jehoiakim’s reign, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon…
Dan 1:2 He carried these off to the land of Shinar…

and they will serve him.

Their submission was fixed by God’s decree. Efforts to oppose Babylon, including the assurances of false prophets, could not overturn what God had determined.

Jer 27:7 All nations will serve him and his son and grandson,…
Jer 25:11 And this whole land will become a desolate wasteland…
2Ch 36:20 Those who escaped the sword were carried by…

I have even given him control of the beasts of the field.’”

Nebuchadnezzar’s authority extended over the land and its creatures, portraying the breadth of the dominion God granted him. Babylon’s rise was not accidental but part of God’s judgment upon the nations.

Dan 2:38 Wherever the sons of men or beasts of the field…
Psa 8:6-8 You made him ruler of the works of Your hands;…
Gen 1:28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply…

Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah,

Jeremiah publicly confronted Hananiah during Judah’s submission to Babylon. Both men were called prophets, but only Jeremiah had been sent by the LORD. Hananiah’s earlier promise of a swift end to Babylonian rule directly contradicted the judgment Jeremiah had consistently proclaimed.

Deu 18:20-22 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…
1Ki 22:24-28 Then Zedekiah son of Chenaanah went up, struck Micaiah…

“Listen, Hananiah!

Jeremiah addressed him personally and demanded attention before exposing the source of Hananiah’s message. The confrontation was necessary because Hananiah’s words had encouraged the people to reject God’s warning.

Deu 18:15-19 The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me…
Mat 17:5 While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped…

The LORD did not send you,

Hananiah spoke in the LORD’s name without the LORD’s authority. His prediction of peace and rapid restoration was not divine revelation but a false message presented as prophecy.

Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”…
Jer 23:21 I did not send these prophets, yet they have run…
Ezk 13:6 They see false visions and speak lying divinations.…

but you have persuaded this people

The people of Judah accepted Hananiah’s promise because it offered relief from Babylonian oppression and avoided the hard reality of coming judgment. His influence made their rebellion against God’s word more dangerous.

Jer 23:32 “Indeed,” declares the LORD, “I am against those…
Ezk 13:10 Because they have led My people astray, saying, ‘Peace,’…

to trust in a lie.

Hananiah’s assurances gave Judah false confidence that Babylon’s yoke would soon be broken. Instead, the exile would continue according to the LORD’s decree, and trust in Hananiah’s message would lead the nation further from obedience.

Jer 7:8 But look, you keep trusting in deceptive words to no avail.
Jer 13:25 This is your lot, the portion I have measured…
2Th 2:11-12 For this reason God will send them a powerful delusion…

Therefore this is what the LORD says:

Jeremiah delivers God’s verdict against Hananiah, whose message of quick peace directly opposed the warning God had given through Jeremiah.

Jer 23:16-17 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen…
Ezk 13:6-9 They see false visions and speak lying divinations.…
1Ki 22:19-23 Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the LORD:…

‘I am about to remove you from the face of the earth.

Hananiah’s false claim to speak for the LORD had misled the people and treated God’s judgment as though it could be dismissed.

Gen 6:7 So the LORD said, “I will blot out man, whom I have created,…
Psa 37:9-10 For the evildoers will be cut off, but those who hope…
Pro 2:21-22 For the upright will inhabit the land, and the blameless…

You will die this year

The judgment would come within a definite, near timeframe, publicly confirming which prophet had truly spoken God’s word.

Deu 18:20 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…
2Ki 1:4 Therefore this is what the LORD says: …
Isa 38:1 In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill.…

because you have preached rebellion against the LORD.’”

By promising deliverance apart from repentance, Hananiah encouraged Judah to resist God’s command and reject the coming Babylonian discipline.

the prophet Hananiah
