So all who resolve to go to Egypt to reside there
This phrase addresses the remnant of Judah after the Babylonian conquest. Historically, Egypt was often seen as a place of refuge due to its relative stability and resources. However, God had warned the Israelites against seeking alliances with Egypt (Isaiah 30:1-3). The decision to go to Egypt reflects a lack of trust in God's promises and a return to old patterns of relying on foreign powers instead of God (Deuteronomy 17:16).

will die by sword and famine and plague.
These three forms of judgment—sword, famine, and plague—are frequently mentioned in the Old Testament as instruments of divine punishment (Ezekiel 5:12). They signify total destruction and are reminiscent of the curses outlined in Deuteronomy 28 for disobedience. This triad of calamities underscores the severity of God's judgment against those who disobey His command to remain in the land He promised to them.

Not one of them will survive or escape
This phrase emphasizes the certainty and totality of the judgment. It reflects the prophetic nature of Jeremiah's message, where God's word is absolute and unchangeable. The idea of no escape is a recurring theme in prophetic literature, highlighting the inescapability of divine judgment (Amos 9:1-4).

the disaster I will bring upon them.
The disaster is a direct consequence of disobedience to God's command. It serves as a fulfillment of prophetic warnings and a demonstration of God's sovereignty and justice. This phrase also connects to the broader biblical theme of God's judgment against sin and rebellion, as seen in the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19) and the Babylonian exile itself. The disaster is not merely a natural consequence but a divinely orchestrated event, reinforcing the seriousness of turning away from God's guidance.

Persons / Places / Events
1. Jeremiah
A prophet called by God to deliver His messages to the people of Judah. He warned them of the consequences of their disobedience.

2. The Remnant of Judah
The group of Israelites left in Judah after the Babylonian exile, seeking guidance from Jeremiah about whether to flee to Egypt for safety.

3. Egypt
A neighboring nation where the remnant of Judah considered fleeing to escape the Babylonian threat, symbolizing reliance on worldly powers rather than God.

4. Sword, Famine, and Plague
The three forms of judgment God declared would follow those who disobeyed His command and went to Egypt, representing comprehensive divine retribution.

5. Babylonian Threat
The geopolitical context of the time, with Babylon as the dominant power, which the people of Judah feared and sought to escape.
Teaching Points
Trust in God's Guidance
The remnant's decision to seek refuge in Egypt reflects a lack of trust in God's protection. Believers are encouraged to seek and trust God's guidance, even when it seems counterintuitive.

Consequences of Disobedience
Disobedience to God's commands leads to dire consequences. This passage serves as a reminder of the importance of aligning our actions with God's will.

Avoiding Worldly Reliance
Egypt symbolizes reliance on worldly solutions rather than divine provision. Christians are called to place their trust in God rather than in worldly powers or solutions.

The Certainty of God's Word
God's pronouncements through Jeremiah were certain and came to pass. This underscores the reliability and authority of God's Word.

Seeking God's Will in Uncertainty
In times of uncertainty, like the remnant faced, believers should earnestly seek God's will and be willing to follow it, even when it challenges our understanding or desires.

What Does Jeremiah 42:17 Mean
So all who resolve to go to Egypt to reside there

“ ‘So all who resolve to go to Egypt to reside there…’ ”

• The remnant left in Judah after Babylon’s invasion (Jeremiah 40–41) asked Jeremiah to seek God’s direction. He clearly told them, “Do not go to Egypt” (Jeremiah 42:19).

• Choosing Egypt was an act of self-reliance and unbelief—“Woe to the rebellious children… who set out to go down to Egypt without consulting Me” (Isaiah 30:1-2).

• God had earlier warned His people not to return to Egypt for safety or horses (Deuteronomy 17:16). Ignoring that command exposed a heart that would rather trust political alliances than the Lord’s covenant care.

will die by the sword

“…will die by the sword…”

• The sword represents violent conquest. Babylon would eventually overrun Egypt as well (Jeremiah 46:13-14).

• When Israel trusted foreign powers, God often turned those same powers against them (2 Kings 18:21; Jeremiah 37:5-10).

• His promise is literal: if Judah flees, Babylon’s sword will still find them (Jeremiah 42:18).

and famine

“…and famine…”

• Famine consistently follows siege and war (Leviticus 26:26; Jeremiah 24:10).

• Seeking bread in Egypt recalls Abraham’s lapse in Genesis 12:10 and the later murmuring in Numbers 11:5. God wants His people to depend on Him in the land He assigns, not chase perceived economic security elsewhere.

and plague

“…and plague.”

• Disease often accompanies war-torn, famine-stricken lands (Ezekiel 6:12; 14:19-21).

• Plague is a divine tool of judgment that no fortified border can keep out (Psalm 91:3-6). Choosing Egypt would place them under the very curses God listed for covenant disobedience (Deuteronomy 28:21-22).

Not one of them will survive or escape

“ ‘Not one of them will survive or escape…’ ”

• The warning is absolute, leaving no loopholes—just as earlier judgments were total for Jerusalem (Jeremiah 21:9-10).

• Contrast with God’s promise of safety if they remained in Judah: “I will build you up and not tear you down” (Jeremiah 42:10-12). Obedience brings preservation; disobedience guarantees loss.

the disaster I will bring upon them

“…the disaster I will bring upon them.”

• The source is unmistakably the Lord: “I will watch over them for harm and not for good” (Jeremiah 44:27).

• God’s sovereignty means He can reach His people wherever they run (Amos 9:2-4). The real issue is spiritual allegiance, not geography.

summary

Jeremiah 42:17 declares that every Judean who stubbornly relocates to Egypt will meet death by sword, famine, and plague, with no survivors. The verse underscores that fleeing God’s will invites comprehensive judgment, while staying in the place of obedience secures His protection.

(17) So shall it be with all the men . . .--The words possibly imply that others were taking the same course as those who had applied to Jeremiah. There was something like a "rush" from many nations--Moab, Edom, and others (Jeremiah 27:3)--of fugitives, looking to Egypt as their one hope of safety against the Chaldaeans, and joining with the Jews that had sought shelter in their respective territories (Jeremiah 40:11). We note in the prophet's warning the recurrence of the old familiar phrases, "by the sword, by the famine, by the pestilence" (Jeremiah 24:10; Ezekiel 6:11), of an "execration and an astonishment and a curse and a reproach" (Jeremiah 24:9; Jeremiah 26:6; Jeremiah 29:18). They would involve themselves by rejecting his counsels in all the worst evils that he had prophesied before. What had been addressed to the mixed multitude is emphatically repeated in Jeremiah 42:19 to the "remnant of Judah." . . .
