Jeremiah 26
Berean Study Bible

A Warning to the Cities of Judah

At the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah,

Jehoiakim came to the throne in 609 BC after Josiah’s death. Unlike his father, who had led Judah in reform and renewed obedience to the LORD, Jehoiakim resisted God’s prophets and pursued policies that contributed to Judah’s decline. His reign unfolded amid the collapse of Assyrian power and the rise of Babylon, leaving Judah politically vulnerable and spiritually compromised. His identification as Josiah’s son underscores the sharp difference between their responses to the LORD.

2Ch 36:4-5 Then Neco made Eliakim king over Judah and Jerusalem…
Jer 1:2-3 The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah in the thirteenth year…

this word came from the LORD:

Jeremiah’s message came by God’s authority, not from personal opinion or political calculation. The LORD continued to address Judah through His prophet, warning the nation of coming judgment and calling its leaders and people to account for their rebellion.

Stand in the courtyard of the house of the LORD

God sends Jeremiah to the temple courts, where worshipers from Jerusalem and throughout Judah would gather. The temple, though central to Judah’s religious life, had become a place where outward worship continued while many hearts remained unfaithful to the covenant.

Jeremiah must deliver God’s message in full, including its hard warnings of judgment. He is not free to soften, alter, or select only what the people are willing to hear.

Pilgrims from across Judah came to Jerusalem for worship, allowing the warning to reach the nation broadly. God’s concern extends beyond the capital to every community accountable to Him.

Jer 7:2 “Stand in the gate of the house of the LORD and proclaim…
2Ch 30:5 So they established a decree to circulate a proclamation…
Deu 16:16 Three times a year all your men appear before the LORD…

Do not omit a word.

The prophet is commanded to speak with complete obedience. Judah must hear the full seriousness of its sin, the certainty of coming judgment if it refuses to repent, and the mercy God offers to those who turn from evil.

Deu 4:2 You must not add to or subtract from what I command you…
Deu 12:32 See that you do everything I command you;…
Pro 30:6 Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you…

Perhaps they will listen and turn—

God sent Jeremiah to confront Judah’s rebellion and offer a genuine opportunity to repent. Though judgment was deserved, the Lord still called the people to hear His word and abandon their sinful course.

Judah’s coming disaster arose from its own continued rebellion against God. Their actions had violated the covenant, rejected the Lord’s commands, and brought the nation under the consequences of its sin.

Jeremiah Threatened with Death

Now the priests and prophets and all the people

The priests, prophets, and all the people gathered at the temple to hear Jeremiah deliver God’s warning, making his proclamation a public matter for the whole nation.

2Ki 23:2 And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people…
2Ch 34:30 And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people…
Jer 5:31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule…

heard Jeremiah speaking

As the LORD’s prophet, Jeremiah announced the message entrusted to him, confronting Judah’s sin and warning of judgment. Those who heard could not claim ignorance of God’s warning.

2Ki 22:11 When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law,…
Neh 8:3 So Ezra read it aloud from daybreak until noon…
Deu 31:11 when all Israel comes before the LORD your God…

these words

Jeremiah’s message concerned the coming destruction of Jerusalem and the temple if the people refused to turn from their rebellion. He spoke with divine authority, not merely from personal opinion.

Jer 36:2 Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken…
Deu 18:19 And I will hold accountable anyone who does not listen…
2Sa 23:2 The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me;…

in the house of the LORD,

Jeremiah delivered this warning in the house of the LORD, Jerusalem’s temple, the center of Israel’s worship and the dwelling place of God’s presence among His people. The setting highlighted the contradiction between outward religious activity and the nation’s persistent disobedience.

Jer 7:2 “Stand in the gate of the house of the LORD and proclaim…
Jer 11:6 Then the LORD said to me, “Proclaim all these words…
Jer 19:14 Then Jeremiah returned from Topheth, where the LORD had…

and as soon as he had finished telling all the people everything the LORD had commanded him to say,

Jeremiah had faithfully delivered God’s message of judgment against Judah, Jerusalem, and the temple. He spoke publicly and withheld nothing God had commanded, though the warning challenged the nation’s confidence in the temple and exposed its continued disobedience.

Jer 1:7 But the LORD told me: “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’…
Deu 18:18-19 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…
Ezk 2:7 But speak My words to them, whether they listen…

the priests and prophets and all the people seized him,

The religious leaders and the crowd responded with hostility rather than repentance. Many of the prophets associated with the temple opposed Jeremiah because his message contradicted their assurances of peace and security. Their action showed how deeply Judah’s leaders and people resisted God’s warning.

Jer 20:1-2 When Pashhur the priest, the son of Immer…
Mat 26:47-50 While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve,…
Act 21:30-31 The whole city was stirred up, and the people…

shouting, “You must surely die!

They treated Jeremiah’s prophecy against the city and temple as worthy of death. Although he had spoken by the LORD’s command, his words were regarded as a threat to the established religious and national order. Jeremiah’s arrest marked the beginning of a public trial in which the leaders of Judah would have to decide whether to heed God’s warning or silence His prophet.

Deu 18:20 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…
1Sa 14:44 May God punish me, and ever so severely,…
Gen 20:7 Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet;…

How dare you prophesy in the name of the LORD

Jeremiah’s message carried the authority of God, yet the priests, prophets, and people treated it as an offense. They rejected him because he announced judgment against Jerusalem rather than the security and peace they expected.

Jer 27:15 For I have not sent them, declares the LORD,…
Jer 29:8-9 For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…
Deu 18:20-22 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…

that this house will become like Shiloh

Shiloh had once been Israel’s central place of worship, where the tabernacle stood, but it fell under God’s judgment after persistent unfaithfulness. Jeremiah warned that the temple in Jerusalem would not preserve the nation if the people continued in rebellion.

Jer 7:12-14 But go now to the place in Shiloh where I first made…
Psa 78:60-61 He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent…
1Sa 4:10-11 So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated…

and this city will be desolate and deserted!”

Jerusalem was regarded as secure because of the temple and God’s covenant with David. Jeremiah exposed the false confidence behind that belief: God’s presence and protection could not be separated from obedience. The warning anticipated the Babylonian destruction of the city and exile of its people.

Jer 4:7 A lion has gone up from his thicket, and a destroyer…
Isa 6:11-12 Then I asked: “How long, O Lord?” And He replied……
Jer 10:22 Listen! The sound of a report is coming—a great commotion…

And all the people assembled against Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.

The temple courts became the setting for a public confrontation against God’s prophet. Rather than receiving the warning with repentance, the crowd united against Jeremiah, revealing how deeply the nation resisted the Lord’s call to turn from sin.

When the officials of Judah heard these things,

Judah’s leading civil authorities learned of Jeremiah’s warning that Jerusalem and the temple would face judgment unless the people repented. His message raised a matter of national importance, demanding an official response.

The temple was the place appointed for worship and stood at the heart of Judah’s covenant life before God.

Mic 4:1-2 In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD…

and sat there at the entrance of the New Gate.

They assembled in a formal setting to hear the accusation against Jeremiah and determine how his prophecy should be treated.

Rut 4:1-2 Meanwhile, Boaz went to the gate and sat down there.…
Job 29:7-9 When I went out to the city gate and took my seat…

Then the priests and prophets said to the officials and all the people,

After Jeremiah delivered his warning in the temple courts, the religious leaders brought their accusation before Judah’s political officials and the gathered public. The setting was a public hearing involving both temple authorities and civic leaders.

Mat 27:20-23 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the crowds…
Act 6:12-14 So they stirred up the people, elders, and scribes…

“This man is worthy of death,

Jeremiah was charged as though he were a false prophet or blasphemer. His warnings challenged the confidence of leaders who believed Jerusalem would remain secure because of the temple and God’s covenant promises.

Mat 26:66 What do you think?” “He deserves to die,” they answered.
Deu 18:20 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…
Deu 13:5 Such a prophet or dreamer must be put to death,…

for he has prophesied against this city,

Jeremiah had announced that Jerusalem and the temple could be destroyed if Judah continued in idolatry, injustice, and rebellion against the Lord. Such a message was regarded as treasonous and threatening during a period of growing danger from Babylon.

Jer 25:29 For behold, I am beginning to bring disaster…
Jer 19:3-11 Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah…

The accusers appealed to the public nature of Jeremiah’s preaching. The officials and people had personally heard his warnings, making them witnesses to the message for which he was being condemned.

Deu 31:11-13 when all Israel comes before the LORD your God…

But Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people,

Jeremiah addressed the leaders and the gathered people without retreating from the message that had placed him in danger. His audience included those responsible for Judah’s civil and religious life as well as the wider public.

Jeremiah identified the Lord as the source of his commission and message. He was not acting on personal hostility toward Jerusalem or its Temple but obeying the God who had called him to speak.

to prophesy against this house and against this city

The house was the Temple in Jerusalem, and the city was Jerusalem itself. Their coming judgment would result from Judah’s persistent idolatry, injustice, and refusal to obey the covenant.

Jer 7:7 then I will let you live in this place, in the land…
Mic 3:12 Therefore, because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field…
1Ki 9:7-8 then I will cut off Israel from the land…

all the words that you have heard.

Jeremiah had repeatedly announced the same warning and call to repentance. The people’s familiarity with his message increased their responsibility, since they had heard God’s warning before the judgment came.

Deu 18:19 And I will hold accountable anyone who does not listen…
2Ki 17:13-14 Yet through all His prophets and seers, the LORD…

So now, correct your ways and deeds,

Judah’s corruption had reached every level of life, including false worship, injustice, and reliance on the temple as protection while disregarding God’s commands. Jeremiah called the people to abandon their sinful conduct and return to covenant faithfulness.

Jer 18:11 Now therefore, tell the men of Judah and the residents…
Zec 1:4 Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets…
Ezk 18:30 Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you…

and obey the voice of the LORD your God,

God had spoken through Jeremiah, whose warning carried divine authority. The nation’s future depended not on political alliances or religious ritual, but on hearing and obeying the Lord.

Deu 13:4 You are to follow the LORD your God and fear Him.…
1Sa 12:14 If you fear the LORD and serve Him and obey His voice,…
Exo 19:5 Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant,…

so that He might relent of the disaster

The announced judgment was not inevitable if Judah truly repented. God’s warnings revealed both His holiness toward sin and His willingness to withhold judgment from those who turned back to Him.

Jon 3:10 When God saw their actions, He relented from the disaster…
Exo 32:14 So the LORD relented from the calamity He had threatened…
Jol 2:13-14 So rend your hearts and not your garments,…

He has pronounced against you.

The disaster included the coming destruction of Jerusalem and the temple through Babylon. Judah’s continued rebellion would bring the covenant judgment Jeremiah had repeatedly proclaimed.

Jer 19:15 This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…
2Ki 22:16-17 this is what the LORD says: I am about to bring calamity…
1Ki 21:27-29 When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes,…

As for me,

Jeremiah stands before the officials without retreating from the message God gave him. Though threatened, he remains faithful to his calling.

Act 21:14 When he would not be dissuaded, we quieted down…

Jeremiah places responsibility upon the leaders to judge rightly, knowing they must answer to God for shedding innocent blood.

Deu 6:18 Do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD,…
1Sa 3:18 So Samuel told him everything and did not hide…

But know for certain

Jeremiah speaks with solemn certainty, making clear that his warning carries God’s authority.

Gen 15:13 Then the LORD said to Abram, “Know for certain…
Act 2:36 Therefore let all Israel know that God has made…
Luk 1:4 so that you may know the certainty of the things…

Ezk 7:15 The sword is outside; plague and famine are within.…
Deu 28:15-19 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God…

for truly the LORD has sent me

Jeremiah again identifies the LORD as the source of his message, not personal ambition or political opposition.

Isa 48:16 Come near to Me and listen to this: From the beginning…
Amo 7:15 But the LORD took me from following the flock…
Deu 18:18-19 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…

He had publicly delivered God’s warning, leaving the people fully accountable for how they responded.

Jeremiah Spared from Death

Then the officials and all the people told the priests and prophets,

Judah’s civil leaders and many of the people rejected the demand for Jeremiah’s execution. Their response exposed a division between those urging judgment against him and those who recognized that his message required a serious hearing.

Jhn 7:45-52 Then the officers returned to the chief priests…
Act 5:34-39 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law…
1Ki 22:13-14 Then the messenger who had gone to call Micaiah…

“This man is not worthy of death,

Jeremiah had warned of Jerusalem’s destruction because of the nation’s sin, but he had not committed a crime deserving execution. The officials and people judged that his words could not be dismissed as treason or blasphemy simply because they were unwelcome.

Luk 23:22 A third time he said to them, “What evil has this man done?…
Act 23:29 I found that the accusation involved questions…
Act 25:25 But I found he had done nothing worthy of death,…

for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God!”

They acknowledged that Jeremiah spoke as the LORD’s messenger. Though his warning condemned Judah’s rebellion, it came from the God of Israel and called the people to repentance rather than destruction without hope.

Deu 18:18-20 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…
1Ki 22:14 As surely as the LORD lives, I will speak…
Jer 23:16-22 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen…

Some of the elders of the land

Respected community leaders joined the proceedings, adding weight to the public examination of Jeremiah’s case. Their presence shows that the matter had become a serious national concern rather than a private dispute.

2Ki 23:1 Then the king summoned all the elders of Judah…
2Ch 34:29-30 Then the king summoned all the elders of Judah…
Ezk 14:1 Then some of the elders of Israel came and sat down…

stood up

They rose to address the gathering and openly intervened on Jeremiah’s behalf. Their action gave authority to the defense and challenged the demand for his execution.

Luk 4:16 Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up.…
Act 5:34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law…

and said to the whole assembly of the people,

The elders spoke before the assembled leaders, priests, prophets, and people, ensuring that the decision would be considered publicly. Their words would remind the assembly of Israel’s history and the proper response to a prophet who delivers an unwelcome message from the Lord.

Even the temple precinct would be left desolate, its buildings gone and its grounds overgrown. God’s presence among His people did not make the nation immune from judgment when they abandoned His covenant.

2Ch 36:19 Then the Chaldeans set fire to the house of God…

Did Hezekiah king of Judah or anyone else in Judah put him to death?

The elders recall Micah of Moresheth, who had warned that Zion would be ruined because of Judah’s sin. Though Micah’s message was severe, neither Hezekiah nor the people executed him. His prophecy was received as a warning from the LORD rather than treated as treason.

2Ki 19:1-4 On hearing this report, King Hezekiah tore his clothes…
Psa 105:15 “Do not touch My anointed ones! Do no harm to My prophets!”
1Ch 16:22 ‘Do not touch My anointed ones! Do no harm to My prophets!’

Did Hezekiah not fear the LORD and seek His favor,

Hezekiah responded with reverence and humility before God. His reign included reforms that removed idolatry and restored proper worship, showing that he took the warning of judgment seriously.

2Ki 18:5-7 Hezekiah trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel.…
2Ch 31:20-21 So this is what Hezekiah did throughout Judah.…
Isa 37:14-20 So Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers…

and did not the LORD relent of the disaster He had pronounced against them?

Judah’s judgment was delayed when Hezekiah sought the LORD. God’s mercy did not deny the seriousness of Judah’s sin, but it showed that He responds to repentance rather than taking pleasure in destruction.

2Ch 32:26-27 Then Hezekiah humbled the pride of his heart…
Mic 3:12 Therefore, because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field…
Jer 18:7-8 At any time I might announce that a nation or kingdom…

But we are about to bring great harm on ourselves!”

By seeking Jeremiah’s death, the officials risked repeating Judah’s rebellion against God. Rejecting the prophet would not remove the warning; it would add guilt and invite the very judgment they feared.

Pro 29:1 A man who remains stiff-necked after much reproof…
Ezk 33:4-6 Then if anyone hears the sound of the horn…
2Ch 36:16 But they mocked the messengers of God, despising His words…

The Prophet Uriah

Now there was another man prophesying in the name of the LORD,

Uriah stood alongside Jeremiah as a true messenger of God during Judah’s final years. His ministry showed that Jeremiah’s warnings were not isolated but were confirmed by another prophet speaking under the LORD’s authority.

Deu 18:20-22 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…
Zec 13:2-3 And on that day, declares the LORD of Hosts…
1Ki 22:11-12 Zedekiah son of Chenaanah had made for himself iron horns…

Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim.

Identified by his father and hometown, Uriah was a Judean from Kiriath-jearim, a town northwest of Jerusalem. He was part of the nation facing the judgment he proclaimed.

1Sa 6:21 So they sent messengers to the people of Kiriath-jearim,…
1Sa 7:1-2 Then the men of Kiriath-jearim came for the ark of the LORD…
1Ch 13:5-6 So David assembled all Israel, from the River Shihor…

He prophesied against this city and against this land

Uriah warned of coming judgment upon Jerusalem and Judah because of the people’s covenant unfaithfulness. His message directly confronted the nation’s sin and its approaching consequences.

2Ki 21:12-15 this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…
2Ch 34:24-25 this is what the LORD says: I am about to bring calamity…
Zep 1:2-4 “I will completely sweep away everything,” declares the LORD.…

the same things that Jeremiah did.

Uriah proclaimed the same judgment Jeremiah had announced, confirming that both men delivered God’s consistent warning to Judah.

Jer 7:1-15 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD…
Jer 19:3-4 Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah…
Jer 25:8-11 Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…

King Jehoiakim and all his mighty men and officials heard his words,

Jehoiakim, Josiah’s son, ruled Judah from 609 to 598 BC and reversed much of his father’s reforming work. His court included military leaders and royal officials, so Uriah’s warning was heard at the highest levels of Judah’s government. Like Jeremiah’s preaching, Uriah’s message exposed the nation’s sin and announced God’s coming judgment.

Jer 36:21-24 Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll…
2Ki 22:10-13 Moreover, Shaphan the scribe told the king…

and the king sought to put him to death.

Jehoiakim responded with violence rather than repentance. He regarded the prophet’s message as a threat to his authority and sought to silence the messenger.

1Sa 22:17-19 Then the king ordered the guards at his side…
1Sa 19:1-2 Then Saul ordered his son Jonathan and all his servants…

But when Uriah found out about it,

Uriah learned that the king intended to kill him and recognized the immediate danger.

1Sa 20:35-42 In the morning Jonathan went out to the field…
1Sa 19:11-18 Then Saul sent messengers to David’s house…

he fled in fear and went to Egypt.

He escaped to Egypt, a neighboring power where fugitives sometimes sought refuge from Judah’s rulers. His flight shows the deadly opposition faced by prophets who proclaimed God’s judgment during Jehoiakim’s reign.

1Ki 11:40 Solomon therefore sought to kill Jeroboam.…
Mat 2:13-15 When the Magi had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared…
Jer 43:4-7 So Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders…

Then King Jehoiakim sent men to Egypt:

Jehoiakim acted to pursue the prophet Urijah, who had fled to Egypt after prophesying against Jerusalem and Judah. Egypt was under Pharaoh Neco II and remained a place of refuge from Babylonian influence, but Jehoiakim’s authority and connections enabled him to seek Urijah’s return.

Jer 37:7 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says…
Isa 30:2 They set out to go down to Egypt without asking…
Jer 43:7 So they entered the land of Egypt because…

Elnathan son of Achbor

Elnathan was a leading official in Judah’s royal court. His father, Achbor, had served during Josiah’s reign, and Elnathan was trusted with a sensitive mission requiring royal authority and diplomatic skill.

Jer 36:12 he went down to the scribe’s chamber in the king’s palace,…
Jer 36:25 Even though Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah urged the king…
Ezr 8:16 Then I summoned the leaders: Eliezer, Ariel…

along with some other men.

The delegation was sent to bring Urijah back from Egypt. Their successful mission led to Urijah’s execution, revealing Jehoiakim’s determination to silence prophetic warnings rather than repent of the sins they exposed.

2Ki 22:12 and commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam son of Shaphan…
1Ki 22:9 So the king of Israel called one of his officials…
Jer 29:1 This is the text of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet…

They brought Uriah out of Egypt

Uriah had fled to Egypt after proclaiming the same kind of judgment against Judah and Jerusalem that Jeremiah preached. Egypt offered temporary refuge beyond Jehoiakim’s immediate reach, but the king’s agents pursued him and returned him to Judah.

Hos 11:1 When Israel was a child, I loved him…
Exo 20:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Jer 44:28 Those who escape the sword will return from Egypt…

and took him to King Jehoiakim,

Jehoiakim’s hostility toward prophetic warnings was already evident in his resistance to God’s word. Bringing Uriah before the king placed his fate in the hands of a ruler determined to silence opposition.

Jer 36:26 Instead, the king commanded Jerahmeel, a son of the king…
1Ki 22:26-27 And the king of Israel declared, “Take Micaiah”…
2Ki 23:34 Then Pharaoh Neco made Eliakim son of Josiah king…

who had him put to the sword

Uriah was executed for faithfully declaring the judgment God had given him. His death showed the danger faced by prophets during Jehoiakim’s reign.

1Ki 19:10 I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,…
Jer 2:30 I have struck your sons in vain; they accepted…
Heb 11:37 They were stoned, they were sawed in two…

and his body thrown into the burial place of the common people.

Rather than receiving an honorable burial, Uriah was placed among the common graves, adding public disgrace to his execution.

Jer 36:30 Therefore this is what the LORD says about Jehoiakim…
Jer 22:18-19 Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning Jehoiakim…
2Ch 21:20 Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king,…

Nevertheless, Ahikam son of Shaphan supported Jeremiah,

Ahikam belonged to a family closely associated with Josiah’s reforms and the restoration of covenant faithfulness in Judah. His intervention shows that Jeremiah was not entirely without support among Judah’s leaders. Though many rejected the prophet’s warning, Ahikam recognized that Jeremiah spoke under God’s authority.

Jer 39:14 had Jeremiah brought from the courtyard…
Jer 40:5-6 But before Jeremiah turned to go, Nebuzaradan added,…
2Ki 22:12-14 and commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam son of Shaphan…

so he was not handed over to the people

The priests, prophets, and gathered crowd had demanded Jeremiah’s death because he proclaimed judgment against Jerusalem and the temple. Ahikam’s influence prevented the leaders from surrendering him to an angry populace determined to silence God’s message.

Psa 27:12 Do not hand me over to the will of my foes,…
Act 12:1-11 About that time, King Herod reached out to harm…
Jhn 7:30-32 So they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him…

to be put to death.

Jeremiah faced a real threat because his warnings exposed Judah’s sin and announced coming judgment. God preserved him through Ahikam’s action, allowing Jeremiah to continue proclaiming His word during Judah’s final years before exile.

Dan 6:16-23 So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel…
1Sa 19:11-12 Then Saul sent messengers to David’s house…
