Genesis 17
Berean Study Bible

Abraham to Father Many Nations

When Abram was ninety-nine years old,

Abram had waited many years since God first called him from Ur and promised to make him a great nation. Ishmael had been born thirteen years earlier, yet God’s promised son through Sarai had not come. Abram’s age and Sarai’s barrenness made the coming fulfillment plainly dependent on God’s power.

the LORD appeared to him

God personally renewed His covenant with Abram at a decisive point in his life, confirming that His promises had not failed or been forgotten.

Walk before Me

Abram was called to live openly before God, ordering his life in faithful obedience under God’s authority.

2Ki 20:3 “Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked…”…
Psa 56:13 For You have delivered my soul from death, …

and be blameless.

God required wholehearted loyalty and upright conduct from Abram as the covenant bearer, not sinless perfection but an undivided life devoted to Him.

Deu 18:13 You must be blameless before the LORD your God.
Job 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job…
Psa 15:2 He who walks with integrity and practices righteousness…

I will establish My covenant between Me and you,

God confirmed His binding promise and agreement to Abram, later Abraham, establishing a relationship marked by His sovereign purpose and faithfulness. The covenant expanded the promises already given: Abraham would become the father of a great people, receive a land for his descendants, and become a source of blessing to the nations. God initiated and guaranteed the covenant, while Abraham and his household were called to walk before Him in obedience.

Gen 15:18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram…
Exo 6:4-5 I also established My covenant with them to give…
Psa 105:8-10 He remembers His covenant forever, the word…

and I will multiply you exceedingly.”

God promised Abraham an abundant line of descendants despite his and Sarah’s old age and long childlessness. The birth of Isaac would begin the direct line through which the promised nation of Israel would grow. Abraham’s descendants would become numerous, including the nations that came through Isaac and Jacob, fulfilling God’s promise by His power rather than human ability.

Gen 16:10 Then the angel added, “I will greatly multiply…”…
Gen 22:17 I will surely bless you, and I will multiply…
Gen 26:4 I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars…

Then Abram fell facedown,

Abram responded to God’s appearance with humble submission and reverence. At ninety-nine years old, he stood before the Lord as the recipient of promises beyond human ability, acknowledging God’s authority over his life and future.

and God said to him,

God personally addressed Abram to confirm and expand the covenant He had established. The Lord would give Abram a new name, a lasting legacy, and the promised son through whom His covenant purposes would continue.

Gen 15:1 After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram…
Gen 13:14 After Lot had departed, the LORD said to Abram,…
Exo 6:2 God also told Moses, “I am the LORD.

“As for Me, this is My covenant with you:

God personally confirms His binding promise to Abram. The covenant rests on God’s faithfulness and includes descendants, land, and blessing through Abram’s chosen line.

Gen 9:9-11 Behold, I now establish My covenant with you…
Gen 15:18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram…

You will be the father of many nations.

Abram would become Abraham, the ancestor of Israel and other peoples descended through Ishmael and the sons of Keturah. Through Abraham’s line, God would also bring the Messiah, extending His blessing to the nations.

Rom 4:17 As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations”…
Gen 18:18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation…

No longer will you be called Abram,

God gives Abram, whose name means “exalted father,” a new name as He confirms the covenant and sets him apart for the role He has appointed. His life will no longer be defined by his past but by God’s promised work through him.

Gen 32:28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob,…
Isa 62:2 Nations will see your righteousness, and all kings…
Jhn 1:42 Andrew brought him to Jesus, who looked at him…

but your name will be Abraham,

Abraham’s new name, meaning “father of a multitude,” reflects the future God has declared for him. Though he and Sarah had no son together at this time, God establishes his identity according to the promise rather than present circumstances.

Neh 9:7 You are the LORD, the God who chose Abram,…
Gen 12:2 I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you;…
Isa 51:2 Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah…

for I have made you a father of many nations.

God’s promise includes Isaac, the nation of Israel, and other peoples descended from Abraham. Abraham also becomes the spiritual father of all who share his faith in God’s promise.

Rom 4:17 As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations”…
Gen 18:18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation…
Gal 3:8 The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles…

I will make you exceedingly fruitful;

God promised Abraham abundant descendants and enduring prosperity under the covenant. His family would grow far beyond what seemed possible in his old age, becoming the channel through which God would preserve His purposes in the world.

Gen 48:4 and told me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful…
Lev 26:9 I will turn toward you and make you fruitful…
Exo 1:7 but the Israelites were fruitful and multiplied;…

I will make nations of you,

Abraham’s descendants included Israel through Isaac and Jacob, as well as other peoples through Ishmael, Esau, and his later sons. The promise established Abraham as the father of many peoples, though the covenant line would continue through Isaac.

and kings will descend from you.

Royal lines arose among Abraham’s descendants, most notably the kings of Israel and Judah from David’s house. The promise ultimately reaches its fulfillment in Jesus Christ, Abraham’s descendant and the eternal King.

I will establish My covenant

God sovereignly confirmed His binding promise to Abraham, continuing the commitments announced earlier: a great family, a land, and blessing through his line.

Lev 26:9 I will turn toward you and make you fruitful…
Gen 9:9 Behold, I now establish My covenant with you…

as an everlasting covenant

This covenant would endure through every generation. God’s promises to Abraham were not temporary or dependent on changing circumstances, and they ultimately find their fulfillment in Christ.

Gen 9:16 And whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds,…
Psa 105:10 He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel…

between Me and you

God entered into a personal relationship with Abraham, choosing him to become the father of the covenant people and to serve as the beginning of Israel’s history.

Exo 31:13 Tell the Israelites, ‘Surely you must keep My Sabbaths,…
Gen 9:12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making…

and your descendants after you,

The promise extended to Abraham’s physical descendants, beginning with Isaac and Jacob and continuing through the nation of Israel. It also anticipated those who would share Abraham’s faith.

Isa 59:21 “As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the LORD…
Psa 105:8 He remembers His covenant forever, the word…

to be your God

At the center of the covenant stood God’s commitment to belong to Abraham and his family as their God, calling them to live under His rule and worship Him alone.

Exo 6:7 I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God.…
Lev 26:12 I will walk among you and be your God,…

and the God of your descendants after you.

God’s care and covenant faithfulness would continue beyond Abraham’s lifetime, preserving His relationship with the people descended from him.

Jer 32:38-40 They will be My people, and I will be their God.…
Ezk 37:25-27 They will live in the land that I gave to My servant Jacob,…

And to you and your descendants

God extends His covenant promise beyond Abraham to his physical offspring, the people of Israel, through whom He would carry out His purposes in history.

Gen 26:3 Stay in this land as a foreigner, and I will be with you…
Gen 12:7 Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said,…

I will give the land where you are residing—

Abraham lived in Canaan as a resident alien, owning no territory except the burial place he later purchased for Sarah. The land would be received by his descendants in God’s appointed time.

Gen 15:18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram…

all the land of Canaan—

Canaan included the territory later occupied by Israel, a land inhabited by established Canaanite peoples during Abraham’s lifetime.

Num 34:2 Command the Israelites and say to them:…
Deu 32:49 Go up into the Abarim Range to Mount Nebo…
Exo 6:4 I also established My covenant with them to give…

God’s grant was permanent and rests on His covenant faithfulness, not on Abraham’s present ability to possess the land.

Psa 105:8-11 He remembers His covenant forever, the word…

The land promise was joined to a covenant relationship in which the God who called Abraham would remain the God of his descendants.

The Covenant of Circumcision

God also said to Abraham,

God continued to define the covenant after confirming His promises concerning Abraham’s descendants, land, and lasting name.

Gen 15:1 After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram…
Gen 12:1 Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country…
Gen 22:1 Some time later God tested Abraham and said to him,…

“You must keep My covenant—

Abraham’s household was required to respond in obedience to God’s covenant. Circumcision would serve as its appointed sign, marking those who belonged to the covenant community.

Exo 19:5 Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant,…
Deu 29:9 So keep and follow the words of this covenant,…
Deu 4:13 He declared to you His covenant, which He commanded…

you and your descendants

The obligation extended beyond Abraham himself to the generations descended from him, beginning with Isaac and continuing through the people of Israel.

Gen 22:17 I will surely bless you, and I will multiply…
Exo 32:13 Remember Your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,…
Rom 9:7 Nor because they are Abraham’s descendants…

in the generations after you.

God established the covenant as an enduring commitment, requiring each generation to recognize His authority and preserve the sign He commanded.

Psa 105:8 He remembers His covenant forever, the word…
Deu 7:9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God,…
Exo 12:14 And this day will be a memorial for you,…

This is My covenant with you and your descendants after you,

God confirmed the covenant He had made with Abraham, extending its promises to Abraham’s physical descendants. It established Israel’s distinct place among the nations, including the promise of a great offspring, the land of Canaan, and God’s enduring presence with them.

Gen 9:9 Behold, I now establish My covenant with you…
Psa 105:8-10 He remembers His covenant forever, the word…
Deu 7:9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God,…

which you are to keep:

Abraham and his household were required to respond in faithful obedience. God’s covenant was His gracious commitment, yet those marked as His people were to live under its obligations.

Deu 29:9 So keep and follow the words of this covenant,…
Gen 26:5 because Abraham listened to My voice and kept My charge…
Deu 11:1 You shall therefore love the LORD your God…

Every male among you must be circumcised.

Circumcision became the visible sign of belonging to Abraham’s covenant family. Performed on the eighth day for every male born in the household or brought into it, it set Israel apart as a people consecrated to God and identified each generation with the covenant promises.

Exo 12:48 If a foreigner resides with you and wants to celebrate…
Jos 5:2-9 At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint knives…
Lev 12:3 And on the eighth day the flesh of the boy’s foreskin……

You are to circumcise the flesh of your foreskin,

God commanded Abraham and every male in his household and line to receive circumcision as a permanent mark in their bodies. Although other ancient peoples practiced circumcision, God set it apart for Abraham’s family as an act of covenant obedience and a sign of separation unto Him. Performed on the eighth day for newborn sons, it identified each generation with the covenant promises given to Abraham.

Lev 12:3 And on the eighth day the flesh of the boy’s foreskin……
Jos 5:2-3 At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint knives…
Exo 4:25 But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her son’s foreskin…

and this will be a sign of the covenant

Circumcision visibly marked those who belonged to the Abrahamic Covenant, through which God promised Abraham numerous descendants, the land of Canaan, and blessing for the nations through his offspring. The outward sign called for an inward devotion marked by holiness and obedience. Its removal of flesh also anticipated the need for the impurity of the human heart to be removed.

Gen 9:12-13 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making…
Rom 4:11 And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal…
Act 7:8 Then God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision…

between Me and you.

The covenant was established by God with Abraham personally and extended through his descendants. Israel’s identity as God’s covenant people rested on His promise and required their faithful response. Through Abraham’s promised offspring, Jesus Christ, God’s covenant purpose ultimately brings blessing to all who belong to Him.

Exo 31:13 Tell the Israelites, ‘Surely you must keep My Sabbaths,…
Exo 6:7 I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God.…
Lev 26:12 I will walk among you and be your God,…

Generation after generation,

God’s covenant with Abraham was established as an enduring obligation for his descendants, binding each succeeding generation to the covenant sign.

Exo 12:14 And this day will be a memorial for you,…
Exo 12:17 So you are to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread,…

every male must be circumcised

Circumcision marked the males of Abraham’s household as belonging to the covenant people. It distinguished Israel from surrounding nations and testified to their consecration to the God who had called Abraham.

Jos 5:2-3 At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint knives…
Act 7:8 Then God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision…
Exo 4:25-26 But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her son’s foreskin…

when he is eight days old,

The command applied from infancy, showing that covenant membership began within the household from the earliest days of life. The eighth day became the appointed time for this rite throughout Israel’s history.

Lev 12:3 And on the eighth day the flesh of the boy’s foreskin……
Luk 2:21 When the eight days before His circumcision had passed,…
Php 3:5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel,…

including those born in your household

The requirement extended beyond Abraham’s direct descendants to those born among his servants and dependents. All males under his authority were to bear the covenant sign.

Lev 22:11 But if a priest buys a slave with his own money,…
Exo 21:4 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him…

and those purchased from a foreigner—

Foreign-born servants who entered Abraham’s household were also included. Their former background did not exempt them from the obligations of the household covenant.

Lev 25:44-46 Your menservants and maidservants shall come…
Exo 12:44 But any slave who has been purchased may eat of it,…

even those who are not your offspring.

God’s covenant community included more than Abraham’s physical lineage. Those joined to his household were to live under the same covenant sign and identification with Abraham’s God.

Exo 12:48-49 If a foreigner resides with you and wants to celebrate…
Isa 56:3-6 Let no foreigner who has joined himself to the LORD say,…
Eph 2:19 Therefore you are no longer strangers and foreigners,…

Whether they are born in your household or purchased, they must be circumcised.

Every male connected to Abraham’s household, including servants and those acquired from outside the family, was to receive the covenant sign. This established the household as a distinct community under God’s covenant and demonstrated that those living under Abraham’s authority were included in its obligations and blessings.

Exo 12:44 But any slave who has been purchased may eat of it,…
Lev 12:3 And on the eighth day the flesh of the boy’s foreskin……
Gen 21:4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised…

My covenant in your flesh will be an everlasting covenant.

Circumcision provided a permanent physical mark identifying Abraham’s descendants and household with God’s covenant promises. It reminded each generation of God’s commitment to give Abraham a great nation, the land of Canaan, and blessing through his offspring. The enduring covenant ultimately finds its fulfillment in Christ, through whom God brings His promised blessing to all who belong to Him.

Act 7:8 Then God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision…
Rom 4:11 And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal…
Col 2:11-12 In Him you were also circumcised, in the putting off…

But if any male is not circumcised,

Circumcision was the God-given sign of the covenant established with Abraham. Every male in Abraham’s family and household, whether born there or purchased as a servant, was to receive it. The rite visibly marked the covenant people as belonging to the Lord and set them apart from surrounding nations.

Exo 12:48-49 If a foreigner resides with you and wants to celebrate…
Lev 12:3 And on the eighth day the flesh of the boy’s foreskin……
Jos 5:2-9 At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint knives…

he will be cut off from his people;

Refusal to receive the covenant sign brought being cut off—exclusion, often implying death or excommunication—from the covenant community and its privileges. Such disobedience treated God’s command as unimportant and placed the offender outside the blessings promised to Abraham’s household.

Exo 31:14 Keep the Sabbath, for it is holy. Anyone who profanes it…
Lev 17:4 instead of bringing it to the entrance…
Num 15:30-31 But the person who sins defiantly, whether a native…

he has broken My covenant.”

Though God Himself established and preserved the covenant, the uncircumcised male rejected its required sign and violated his covenant obligation. Circumcision did not earn God’s promises, but it was the appointed expression of belonging to the people through whom God would fulfill His purposes.

Deu 31:16 And the LORD said to Moses, “You will soon rest…
Jer 31:32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers…
Hos 6:7 But they, like Adam, have transgressed the covenant;…

Then God said to Abraham,

God continued to reveal His covenant purposes directly to Abraham, preparing him for the promised son through whom the covenant line would continue.

Gen 21:12 But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed…
Gen 15:1 After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram…
Gen 12:1 Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country…

“As for Sarai your wife,

Sarai was included personally in God’s covenant promise. Though she had long been barren, she would become the mother of the child God had appointed.

Gen 11:29 And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves.…
Gen 16:1 Now Abram’s wife Sarai had borne him no children,…
Gen 12:17 The LORD, however, afflicted Pharaoh and his household…

do not call her Sarai,

God marked the coming change in her life and place in His plan by giving her a new name.

Gen 35:10 And God said to him, “Though your name is Jacob.…
Gen 32:28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob,…
Isa 62:2 Nations will see your righteousness, and all kings…

for her name is to be Sarah.

Sarah (formerly Sarai; both names mean “princess”) would share in the promise given to Abraham, becoming the mother of Isaac and the ancestor of nations and kings.

Gen 18:9 “Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked…
Gen 21:2 So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age…
Heb 11:11 By faith Sarah, even though she was barren…

And I will bless her

God’s favor rests directly on Sarah, reversing the shame of her barrenness and confirming her place in the covenant promise.

Psa 113:9 He settles the barren woman in her home as a joyful mother…
1Sa 1:27 I prayed for this boy, and since the LORD has…

and will surely give you a son by her.

Abraham’s promised heir will come through Sarah, not through Hagar. Though both Abraham and Sarah are beyond normal childbearing age, God will give them Isaac according to His promise.

Rom 9:9 For this is what the promise stated: “At the appointed time…
Gen 18:10-14 Then the LORD said, “I will surely return to you…
Gen 21:1-2 Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said…

I will bless her,

The repeated promise stresses the certainty of God’s purpose and Sarah’s essential role as mother of the covenant line.

Isa 54:1 Shout for joy, O barren woman, who bears no children;…
Gal 4:28 Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.
1Pe 3:6 just as Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him lord.…

and she will be the mother of nations;

Sarah will become the ancestor of Israel and of other peoples descended through Isaac, including Edom through Esau.

Rom 4:17 As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations”…

kings of peoples will descend from her.”

Her descendants will include rulers among Israel and neighboring peoples. The promise ultimately leads to the royal line from which the Messiah comes.

Gen 35:11 And God told him, “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful…
2Sa 7:12-16 And when your days are fulfilled and you rest…
Luk 1:32-33 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High…

Abraham fell facedown.

Overwhelmed by God’s presence and covenant promise, Abraham bowed in humble submission and reverence.

Jos 5:14 “Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as Commander…”…
Num 14:5 Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown before the assembly…
Lev 9:24 Fire came out from the presence of the LORD…

Then he laughed and said to himself,

His laughter reflected astonishment at the promise God had made. Though Abraham believed God, the prospect of a son in his old age exceeded all ordinary human expectation.

Gen 18:12-13 So she laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out…
Gen 21:6-7 Then Sarah said, “God has made me laugh.”…
Psa 126:2 Then our mouths were filled with laughter…

“Can a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old?

Abraham recognized that, at nearly one hundred, he had no natural reason to expect a son. God’s promise would be fulfilled by His power, not by human ability.

Gen 21:5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac…
Rom 4:19 Without weakening in his faith, he acknowledged…
Heb 11:12 And so from one man, and he as good as dead,…

Can Sarah give birth at the age of ninety?”

Sarah had long been barren and was now beyond childbearing age. The promised birth would confirm that the covenant line through Isaac came by God’s direct intervention.

Gen 18:11 And Abraham and Sarah were already old…
Gen 21:1-2 Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said…
Heb 11:11 By faith Sarah, even though she was barren…

And Abraham said to God,

Abraham responded openly to the Lord after hearing that Sarah would bear the covenant son. Though he believed God, he also carried concern for Ishmael, his firstborn and only son up to that point.

Gen 20:17 Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed…
Exo 32:11-14 But Moses sought the favor of the LORD his God, saying,…

“O that Ishmael might live

Ishmael was about thirteen years old, and Abraham desired that he would not be set aside by the promise of Isaac’s birth. His plea reveals a father’s love and concern for Ishmael’s future.

Gen 21:17-18 Then God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God…
Gen 21:13 But I will also make a nation of the slave woman’s son…
Gen 16:11-12 The angel of the LORD proceeded: “Behold, you have conceived…

Abraham asked God to preserve and prosper Ishmael in His favor. God would confirm that Isaac was the promised heir through whom the covenant would continue, yet He would also bless Ishmael, make him fruitful, and establish him as the father of a great nation.

Gen 12:2-3 I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you;…
Gen 22:17-18 I will surely bless you, and I will multiply…
Num 6:24-26 ‘May the LORD bless you and keep you;…

But God replied,

God personally confirmed His purpose to Abraham, making clear that the covenant would proceed according to His sovereign plan.

Num 23:19 God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man,…
Luk 1:37 For no word from God will ever fail.”

“Your wife Sarah will indeed bear you a son,

Sarah’s advanced age made the birth of this child humanly impossible, yet God would fulfill what He had promised to both Abraham and Sarah.

Gen 18:10 Then the LORD said, “I will surely return to you…
Gen 21:1-2 Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said…
Rom 9:9 For this is what the promise stated: “At the appointed time…

and you are to name him Isaac.

Isaac’s name, meaning “laughter,” recalled the astonishment surrounding the promise and would mark the joy of its fulfillment.

Gen 21:3 And Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son…
Rom 9:7 Nor because they are Abraham’s descendants…
Heb 11:18 even though God had said to him, “Through Isaac”…

I will establish My covenant with him

Though Ishmael would receive blessing, Isaac was the son through whom God would continue the covenant promises given to Abraham.

Gen 26:3-5 Stay in this land as a foreigner, and I will be with you…
Psa 105:8-10 He remembers His covenant forever, the word…

as an everlasting covenant

God’s commitment would endure through Isaac’s line, preserving the people through whom He would carry forward His redemptive purposes.

2Sa 23:5 Is not my house right with God? For He has established…
Jer 32:40 I will make an everlasting covenant with them…

for his descendants after him.

Isaac’s descendants through Jacob became Israel, the covenant nation from which the Messiah would come.

Gen 21:12 But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed…
Gen 22:17-18 I will surely bless you, and I will multiply…

As for Ishmael, I have heard you,

God answered Abraham’s concern for Ishmael. Though Isaac would be the covenant son, Ishmael was not overlooked or excluded from God’s care.

Gen 21:17 Then God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God…
Gen 16:11 The angel of the LORD proceeded: “Behold, you have conceived…

and I will surely bless him;

Ishmael would receive God’s favor in prosperity, protection, and descendants, even though he would not inherit the covenant promises given through Isaac.

Gen 22:17 I will surely bless you, and I will multiply…
Gen 12:2 I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you;…

I will make him fruitful and multiply him greatly.

Ishmael’s family would grow into a large people, fulfilling God’s promise of numerous descendants.

Gen 28:3 May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful…
Gen 48:4 and told me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful…
Gen 35:11 And God told him, “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful…

Gen 21:13 But I will also make a nation of the slave woman’s son…
Gen 46:3 “I am God,” He said, “the God of your father”…

But I will establish My covenant with Isaac,

God set Isaac apart as the heir through whom His covenant promises to Abraham would continue: a great nation, the land of Canaan, and blessing extending to all nations. Ishmael would also receive blessing, but Isaac was the appointed son of promise.

Sarah’s motherhood was central to God’s promise. Though she and Abraham were advanced in age, God would give them the son He had promised, demonstrating that the covenant depended on His power and faithfulness rather than human ability.

God went up from him.

The visible manifestation of God’s presence ended after His covenant message was complete. God’s departure underscored His authority and left Abraham with a clear obligation to obey the covenant command.

So Abraham was ninety-nine years old

His age magnifies the fulfillment of God’s promise. Abraham had waited many years since leaving Haran, yet he continued to trust the Lord’s covenant to make him the father of many nations. Even at an age when fathering a son seemed humanly impossible, God’s purpose remained unchanged.

Abraham, the covenant recipient, and Ishmael, his firstborn through Hagar, were both included in the circumcision of Abraham’s household. Though Isaac would be the promised heir through whom the covenant line continued, Ishmael also received the covenant sign as Abraham’s son.

Circumcision marked submission to God’s covenant command and identified the males of Abraham’s household with the covenant community. Abraham did not limit obedience to himself or to the future line of Isaac, but applied God’s instruction throughout his family.
