1 It was now just before the Passover Feast, and Jesus knew that His hour had come to leave this world and return to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the very end. Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 The evening meal was underway, and the devil had already put into the heart of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's <i>son</i>, to betray him; And during supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, <i>the son</i> of Simon, to betray Him, The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.
3 Jesus knew that the Father had delivered all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was returning to God. Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; <i>Jesus,</i> knowing that the Father had handed all things over to Him, and that He had come forth from God and was going <i>back</i> to God, Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;
4 So He got up from the supper, laid aside His outer garments, and wrapped a towel around His waist. rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. got up from supper and laid His outer garments <i>aside;</i> and He took a towel and tied it around Himself. so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel that was around Him. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe <i>them</i> with the towel wherewith he was girded. Then He poured water into the basin, and began washing the disciples’ feet and wiping them with the towel which He had tied around Himself. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
6 He came to Simon Peter, who asked Him, “Lord, are You going to wash my feet? He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, “Lord, You are washing my feet?” He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand. Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing, you do not realize right now, but you will understand later.” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
8 “Never shall You wash my feet! Peter told Him. Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with Me. Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. Peter said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no place with Me.” “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
9 “Then, Lord, Simon Peter replied, “not only my feet, but my hands and my head as well! Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also <i>my</i> hands and <i>my</i> head. Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, <i>then wash</i> not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!” “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
10 Jesus told him, “Whoever has already bathed needs only to wash his feet, and he will be completely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you. Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash <i>his</i> feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet; otherwise he is completely clean. And you are clean—but not all <i>of you.</i>” Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.”
11 For He knew who would betray Him. That is why He said, “Not all of you are clean. For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.” For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean. For He knew the one who was betraying Him; <i>it was</i> for this reason <i>that</i> He said, “Not all <i>of you</i> are clean.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
12 When Jesus had washed their feet and put on His outer garments, He reclined with them again and asked, “Do you know what I have done for you? When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? Then, when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined <i>at the table</i> again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done for you? When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them.
13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so, because I am. You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for <i>so</i> I am. You call Me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord’; and you are correct, for <i>so</i> I am. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.
14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. If I then, <i>your</i> Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. So if I, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
15 I have set you an example so that you should do as I have done for you. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. For I gave you an example, so that you also would do just as I did for you. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
16 Truly, truly, I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. Truly, truly I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor <i>is</i> one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
17 If you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
18 I am not speaking about all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the Scripture: ‘The one who shares My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.’ I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. I am not speaking about all of you. I know <i>the ones</i> whom I have chosen; but <i>this is happening</i> so that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘HE WHO EATS MY BREAD HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEEL AGAINST ME.’ “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: ‘He who shared my bread has turned against me.’
19 I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it comes to pass, you will believe that I am He. I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am <i>he</i>. From now on I am telling you before <i>it</i> happens, so that when it does happen, you may believe that I am <i>He.</i> “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am.
20 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever receives the one I send receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives the One who sent Me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.” Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. Truly, truly I say to you, the one who receives anyone I send, receives Me; and the one who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.” Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”
21 After Jesus had said this, He became troubled in spirit and testified, “Truly, truly, I tell you, one of you will betray Me. After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. When Jesus had said these things, He became troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Truly, truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”
22 The disciples looked at one another, perplexed as to which of them He meant. The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake. The disciples <i>began</i> looking at one another, at a loss <i>to know</i> of which one He was speaking. His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant.
23 One of His disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was reclining at His side. One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus’ side, Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. Lying back on Jesus’ chest was one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.
24 So Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus which one He was talking about. so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake. So Simon Peter nodded to this <i>disciple</i> and said to him, “Tell <i>us</i> who it is of whom He is speaking.” Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”
25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked, “Lord, who is it? So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it? He then simply leaned back on Jesus’ chest and said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”
26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I give this morsel after I have dipped it. Then He dipped the morsel and gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot. Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped <i>it</i>. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave <i>it</i> to Judas Iscariot, <i>the son</i> of Simon. Jesus then answered, “That man is the one for whom I shall dip the piece <i>of bread</i> and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the piece <i>of bread,</i> He took and gave <i>it</i> to Judas, <i>the son</i> of Simon Iscariot. Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
27 And when Judas had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to Judas, “What you are about to do, do quickly. Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. After this, Satan then entered him. Therefore Jesus said to him, “What you are doing, do <i>it</i> quickly.” As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.”
28 But no one at the table knew why Jesus had said this to him. Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him. Now none of those reclining <i>at the table</i> knew for what purpose He had said this to him. But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him.
29 Since Judas kept the money bag, some thought that Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the feast, or to give something to the poor. Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. For some <i>of them</i> thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy <i>those things</i> that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. For some were assuming, since Judas kept the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy the things we need for the feast”; or else, that he was to give something to the poor. Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor.
30 As soon as he had received the morsel, Judas went out into the night. So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night. He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night. So after receiving the piece <i>of bread,</i> he left immediately; and it was night. As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
31 When Judas had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. Therefore when he had left, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him; When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him.
32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify the Son in Himself— and will glorify Him at once. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him. if God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately. If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.
33 Little children, I am with you only a little while longer. You will look for Me, and as I said to the Jews, so now I say to you: ‘Where I am going, you cannot come. Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. Little children, I am <i>still</i> with you a little longer. You will look for Me; and just as I said to the Jews, now I also say to you: ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.
34 A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also must love one another. A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. I am giving you a new commandment, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, that you also love one another. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35 By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” By this shall all <i>men</i> know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. By this all <i>people</i> will know that you are My disciples: if you have love for one another.” By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
36 “Lord, where are You going? Simon Peter asked. Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you cannot follow Me now, but you will follow later. Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards. Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you cannot follow Me now; but you will follow later.” Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”
37 “Lord, said Peter, “why can’t I follow You now? I will lay down my life for You. Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake. Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? I will lay down my life for You.” Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
38 “Will you lay down your life for Me? Jesus replied. “Truly, truly, I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times. Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times. Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice. Jesus replied, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times. Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
