Γνωρίζω δὲ ὑμῖν ἀδελφοί τὸ εὐαγγέλιον εὐηγγελισάμην ὑμῖν καὶ παρελάβετε ἐν καὶ ἑστήκατε Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand.
δι’ οὗ καὶ σῴζεσθε τίνι λόγῳ εὐηγγελισάμην ὑμῖν εἰ κατέχετε ἐκτὸς εἰ μὴ εἰκῇ ἐπιστεύσατε and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.
Παρέδωκα γὰρ ὑμῖν ἐν πρώτοις καὶ παρέλαβον ὅτι Χριστὸς ἀπέθανεν ὑπὲρ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἡμῶν κατὰ τὰς γραφάς For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
καὶ ὅτι ἐτάφη καὶ ὅτι ἐγήγερται τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τρίτῃ κατὰ τὰς γραφάς that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
καὶ ὅτι ὤφθη Κηφᾷ εἶτα τοῖς δώδεκα and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.
ἔπειτα ὤφθη ἐπάνω πεντακοσίοις ἀδελφοῖς ἐφάπαξ ἐξ ὧν οἱ πλείονες μένουσιν ἕως ἄρτι τινὲς δὲ ἐκοιμήθησαν Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.
ἔπειτα ὤφθη Ἰακώβῳ εἶτα τοῖς ἀποστόλοις πᾶσιν Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles,
ἔσχατον δὲ πάντων ὡσπερεὶ τῷ ἐκτρώματι ὤφθη κἀμοί Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.
Ἐγὼ γάρ εἰμι ἐλάχιστος τῶν ἀποστόλων ὃς οὐκ εἰμὶ ἱκανὸς καλεῖσθαι ἀπόστολος διότι ἐδίωξα τὴν ἐκκλησίαν τοῦ Θεοῦ For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
χάριτι δὲ Θεοῦ εἰμι εἰμι καὶ χάρις αὐτοῦ εἰς ἐμὲ οὐ κενὴ ἐγενήθη ἀλλὰ περισσότερον αὐτῶν πάντων ἐκοπίασα οὐκ ἐγὼ δὲ ἀλλὰ χάρις τοῦ Θεοῦ ‹ἡ› σὺν ἐμοί But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.
εἴτε οὖν ἐγὼ εἴτε ἐκεῖνοι οὕτως κηρύσσομεν καὶ οὕτως ἐπιστεύσατε Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed. Whether, then, it is I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed.
Εἰ δὲ Χριστὸς κηρύσσεται ὅτι ἐκ νεκρῶν ἐγήγερται πῶς λέγουσιν ἐν ὑμῖν τινες ὅτι ἀνάστασις νεκρῶν οὐκ ἔστιν Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?
εἰ δὲ ἀνάστασις νεκρῶν οὐκ ἔστιν οὐδὲ Χριστὸς ἐγήγερται But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.
εἰ δὲ Χριστὸς οὐκ ἐγήγερται κενὸν ἄρα [καὶ] τὸ κήρυγμα ἡμῶν κενὴ καὶ πίστις ὑμῶν And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.
εὑρισκόμεθα δὲ καὶ ψευδομάρτυρες τοῦ Θεοῦ ὅτι ἐμαρτυρήσαμεν κατὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ ὅτι ἤγειρεν τὸν Χριστόν ὃν οὐκ ἤγειρεν εἴπερ ἄρα νεκροὶ οὐκ ἐγείρονται We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised.
Εἰ γὰρ νεκροὶ οὐκ ἐγείρονται οὐδὲ Χριστὸς ἐγήγερται For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either.
εἰ δὲ Χριστὸς οὐκ ἐγήγερται ματαία πίστις ὑμῶν (ἐστίν) ἔτι ἐστὲ ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ὑμῶν And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.
ἄρα καὶ οἱ κοιμηθέντες ἐν Χριστῷ ἀπώλοντο Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost.
εἰ ἐν τῇ ζωῇ ταύτῃ ἐν Χριστῷ ἠλπικότες ἐσμὲν μόνον ἐλεεινότεροι πάντων ἀνθρώπων ἐσμέν If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
Νυνὶ δὲ Χριστὸς ἐγήγερται ἐκ νεκρῶν ἀπαρχὴ τῶν κεκοιμημένων But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
ἐπειδὴ γὰρ δι’ ἀνθρώπου θάνατος καὶ δι’ ἀνθρώπου ἀνάστασις νεκρῶν For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.
ὥσπερ γὰρ ἐν τῷ Ἀδὰμ πάντες ἀποθνήσκουσιν οὕτως καὶ ἐν τῷ Χριστῷ πάντες ζωοποιηθήσονται For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.
Ἕκαστος δὲ ἐν τῷ ἰδίῳ τάγματι ἀπαρχὴ Χριστός ἔπειτα οἱ τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ αὐτοῦ But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.
εἶτα τὸ τέλος ὅταν παραδιδῷ* τὴν βασιλείαν τῷ Θεῷ καὶ Πατρί ὅταν καταργήσῃ πᾶσαν ἀρχὴν καὶ πᾶσαν ἐξουσίαν καὶ δύναμιν Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power.
δεῖ γὰρ αὐτὸν βασιλεύειν ἄχρι οὗ θῇ πάντας τοὺς ἐχθροὺς ὑπὸ τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.
ἔσχατος ἐχθρὸς καταργεῖται θάνατος The last enemy to be destroyed is death. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
Πάντα γὰρ Ὑπέταξεν ὑπὸ τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ ὅταν δὲ εἴπῃ ὅτι πάντα ὑποτέτακται δῆλον ὅτι ἐκτὸς τοῦ ὑποτάξαντος αὐτῷ τὰ πάντα For “God has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “all things are put in subjection,” it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him. For he “has put everything under his feet.” Now when it says that “everything” has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ.
ὅταν δὲ ὑποταγῇ αὐτῷ τὰ πάντα τότε καὶ αὐτὸς Υἱὸς ὑποταγήσεται τῷ ὑποτάξαντι αὐτῷ τὰ πάντα ἵνα Θεὸς [τὰ] πάντα ἐν πᾶσιν When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all. When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all.
Ἐπεὶ τί ποιήσουσιν οἱ βαπτιζόμενοι ὑπὲρ τῶν νεκρῶν εἰ ὅλως νεκροὶ οὐκ ἐγείρονται τί καὶ βαπτίζονται ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf? Now if there is no resurrection, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized for them?
τί καὶ ἡμεῖς κινδυνεύομεν πᾶσαν ὥραν Why are we in danger every hour? And as for us, why do we endanger ourselves every hour?
καθ’ ἡμέραν ἀποθνῄσκω νὴ τὴν ὑμετέραν καύχησιν ἀδελφοί ἣν ἔχω ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ τῷ Κυρίῳ ἡμῶν I protest, brothers, by my pride in you, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die every day! I face death every day—yes, just as surely as I boast about you in Christ Jesus our Lord.
εἰ κατὰ ἄνθρωπον ἐθηριομάχησα ἐν Ἐφέσῳ τί μοι τὸ ὄφελος εἰ νεκροὶ οὐκ ἐγείρονται Φάγωμεν καὶ πίωμεν αὔριον γὰρ ἀποθνήσκομεν What do I gain if, humanly speaking, I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus with no more than human hopes, what have I gained? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”
Μὴ πλανᾶσθε Φθείρουσιν ἤθη χρηστὰ ὁμιλίαι κακαί Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”
ἐκνήψατε δικαίως καὶ μὴ ἁμαρτάνετε ἀγνωσίαν γὰρ Θεοῦ τινες ἔχουσιν πρὸς ἐντροπὴν ὑμῖν λαλῶ Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on sinning. For some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame. Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God—I say this to your shame.
Ἀλλὰ ἐρεῖ τις Πῶς ἐγείρονται οἱ νεκροί ποίῳ δὲ σώματι ἔρχονται But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?” But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?”
ἄφρων σὺ σπείρεις οὐ ζωοποιεῖται ἐὰν μὴ ἀποθάνῃ You foolish person! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.
καὶ σπείρεις οὐ τὸ σῶμα τὸ γενησόμενον σπείρεις ἀλλὰ γυμνὸν κόκκον εἰ τύχοι σίτου τινος τῶν λοιπῶν And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else.
δὲ Θεὸς δίδωσιν αὐτῷ σῶμα καθὼς ἠθέλησεν καὶ ἑκάστῳ τῶν σπερμάτων ἴδιον σῶμα But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body. But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body.
Οὐ πᾶσα σὰρξ αὐτὴ σάρξ ἀλλὰ ἄλλη μὲν ἀνθρώπων ἄλλη δὲ σὰρξ κτηνῶν ἄλλη δὲ σὰρξ πτηνῶν ἄλλη δὲ ἰχθύων For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. Not all flesh is the same: People have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another and fish another.
καὶ σώματα ἐπουράνια καὶ σώματα ἐπίγεια ἀλλὰ ἑτέρα μὲν τῶν ἐπουρανίων δόξα ἑτέρα δὲ τῶν ἐπιγείων There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another. There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another.
ἄλλη δόξα ἡλίου καὶ ἄλλη δόξα σελήνης καὶ ἄλλη δόξα ἀστέρων ἀστὴρ γὰρ ἀστέρος διαφέρει ἐν δόξῃ There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory. The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor.
Οὕτως καὶ ἀνάστασις τῶν νεκρῶν σπείρεται ἐν φθορᾷ ἐγείρεται ἐν ἀφθαρσίᾳ So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable;
σπείρεται ἐν ἀτιμίᾳ ἐγείρεται ἐν δόξῃ σπείρεται ἐν ἀσθενείᾳ ἐγείρεται ἐν δυνάμει It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power;
σπείρεται σῶμα ψυχικόν ἐγείρεται σῶμα πνευματικόν Εἰ ἔστιν σῶμα ψυχικόν ἔστιν καὶ πνευματικόν It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
οὕτως καὶ γέγραπται Ἐγένετο πρῶτος ἄνθρωπος Ἀδὰμ εἰς ψυχὴν ζῶσαν ἔσχατος Ἀδὰμ εἰς πνεῦμα ζωοποιοῦν Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being|; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.
Ἀλλ’ οὐ πρῶτον τὸ πνευματικὸν ἀλλὰ τὸ ψυχικόν ἔπειτα τὸ πνευματικόν But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual.
πρῶτος ἄνθρωπος ἐκ γῆς χοϊκός δεύτερος ἄνθρωπος ἐξ οὐρανοῦ The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. The first man was of the dust of the earth; the second man is of heaven.
οἷος χοϊκός τοιοῦτοι καὶ οἱ χοϊκοί καὶ οἷος ἐπουράνιος τοιοῦτοι καὶ οἱ ἐπουράνιοι As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven.
καὶ καθὼς ἐφορέσαμεν τὴν εἰκόνα τοῦ χοϊκοῦ φορέσομεν καὶ τὴν εἰκόνα τοῦ ἐπουρανίου Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven. And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man.
Τοῦτο δέ φημι ἀδελφοί ὅτι σὰρξ καὶ αἷμα βασιλείαν Θεοῦ κληρονομῆσαι οὐ δύναται οὐδὲ φθορὰ τὴν ἀφθαρσίαν κληρονομεῖ I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.
Ἰδοὺ μυστήριον ὑμῖν λέγω πάντες οὐ κοιμηθησόμεθα πάντες δὲ ἀλλαγησόμεθα Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—
ἐν ἀτόμῳ ἐν ῥιπῇ ὀφθαλμοῦ ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ σάλπιγγι σαλπίσει γάρ καὶ οἱ νεκροὶ ἐγερθήσονται ἄφθαρτοι καὶ ἡμεῖς ἀλλαγησόμεθα in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.
δεῖ γὰρ τὸ φθαρτὸν τοῦτο ἐνδύσασθαι ἀφθαρσίαν καὶ τὸ θνητὸν τοῦτο ἐνδύσασθαι ἀθανασίαν For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.
Ὅταν δὲ τὸ φθαρτὸν τοῦτο ἐνδύσηται (τὴν) ἀφθαρσίαν καὶ τὸ θνητὸν τοῦτο ἐνδύσηται ἀθανασίαν τότε γενήσεται λόγος γεγραμμένος Κατεπόθη θάνατος εἰς νῖκος When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
Ποῦ σου θάνατε τὸ νῖκος ποῦ σου θάνατε τὸ κέντρον “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”
Τὸ δὲ κέντρον τοῦ θανάτου ἁμαρτία δὲ δύναμις τῆς ἁμαρτίας νόμος The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
τῷ δὲ Θεῷ χάρις τῷ διδόντι ἡμῖν τὸ νῖκος διὰ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ὥστε ἀδελφοί μου ἀγαπητοί ἑδραῖοι γίνεσθε ἀμετακίνητοι περισσεύοντες ἐν τῷ ἔργῳ τοῦ Κυρίου πάντοτε εἰδότες ὅτι κόπος ὑμῶν οὐκ ἔστιν κενὸς ἐν Κυρίῳ Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
