Judgment on Moab
(Isaiah 15:1–9)
1 לְמוֹאָ֡ב (Concerning Moab) כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַר֩ (says) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֜וֹת (Hosts), אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel);
ה֤וֹי (Woe) אֶל־ (to) נְבוֹ֙ (Nebo)!
כִּ֣י (For) שֻׁדָּ֔דָה (it is ruined);
הֹבִ֥ישָׁה (has been put to shame) נִלְכְּדָ֖ה (it has been captured); קִרְיָתָ֑יִם (Kiriathaim)
הֹבִ֥ישָׁה (has been put to shame) הַמִּשְׂגָּ֖ב (the fortress) וָחָֽתָּה׃ (and is broken down).
2 אֵ֣ין (There is no) עוֹד֮ (longer any) תְּהִלַּ֣ת (praise) מוֹאָב֒ (for Moab);
בְּחֶשְׁבּ֗וֹן (in Heshbon) חָשְׁב֤וּ (they have devised) עָלֶ֙יהָ֙ (against her) רָעָ֔ה (evil)
לְכ֖וּ (Come), וְנַכְרִיתֶ֣נָּה (and let us cut her off) מִגּ֑וֹי (from nationhood).
גַּם־ (Also) מַדְמֵ֣ן (O Madmen); תִּדֹּ֔מִּי (you will be silenced),
אַחֲרַ֖יִךְ (after you) תֵּ֥לֶךְ (will go) חָֽרֶב׃ (the sword).
3 ק֥וֹל (A voice) צְעָקָ֖ה (cries out) מֵחֹֽרוֹנָ֑יִם (from Horonaim)
שֹׁ֖ד (Devastation) וָשֶׁ֥בֶר (and destruction) גָּדֽוֹל׃ (great).
4 נִשְׁבְּרָ֖ה (Is destroyed); מוֹאָ֑ב (Moab)
הִשְׁמִ֥יעוּ (have caused to be heard). זְּעָקָ֖ה (A cry) צְעוֹרֶיהָ׃ (her little ones).
5 כִּ֚י (For) מַעֲלֵ֣ה (the ascent) הַלֻּחוֹת (of Luhith) בִּבְכִ֖י (with weeping)
יַֽעֲלֶה־ (they ascend); בֶּ֑כִי (weeping)
כִּ֚י (for) בְּמוֹרַ֣ד (on the descent) חוֹרֹנַ֔יִם (of Horonaim)
צָרֵ֥י (the distressed) צַֽעֲקַת־ (cry)
שֶׁ֖בֶר (of destruction) שָׁמֵֽעוּ׃ (they have heard).
6 נֻ֖סוּ (Flee), מַלְּט֣וּ (save) נַפְשְׁכֶ֑ם (your⁺ own soul),
וְתִֽהְיֶ֕ינָה (l become) כַּעֲרוֹעֵ֖ר (like a juniper) בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (in the desert).
7 כִּ֠י (For) יַ֣עַן (because) בִּטְחֵ֤ךְ (you have trusted) בְּמַעֲשַׂ֙יִךְ֙ (in your works) וּבְא֣וֹצְרוֹתַ֔יִךְ (and in your treasures),
גַּם־ (also) אַ֖תְּ (you) תִּלָּכֵ֑דִי (will be captured);
וְיָצָ֤א (and will go forth) כְמִישׁ (Chemosh) בַּגּוֹלָ֔ה (into exile)
כֹּהֲנָ֥יו (his priests) וְשָׂרָ֖יו (and his princes) יַחַד׃ (together).
8 וְיָבֹ֨א (And will come) שֹׁדֵ֜ד (the destroyer) אֶל־ (to) כָּל־ (every) עִ֗יר (city),
וְעִיר֙ (and a city) לֹ֣א (not) תִמָּלֵ֔ט (one will escape);
וְאָבַ֥ד (and will perish), הָעֵ֖מֶק (the valley)
וְנִשְׁמַ֣ד (and will be destroyed), הַמִּישֹׁ֑ר (the plain)
אֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) אָמַ֥ר (has said) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).
9 תְּנוּ־ (Give) צִ֣יץ (wings) לְמוֹאָ֔ב (to Moab),
כִּ֥י (for) נָצֹ֖א (she would fly) תֵּצֵ֑א (away);
וְעָרֶ֙יהָ֙ (and her cities) לְשַׁמָּ֣ה (as a desolation), תִֽהְיֶ֔ינָה (will become)
מֵאֵ֥ין (without) יוֹשֵׁ֖ב (one dwelling) בָּהֵֽן׃ (in them).
10 אָר֗וּר (Cursed is) עֹשֶׂ֛ה (the one doing)
מְלֶ֥אכֶת (the work) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) רְמִיָּ֑ה (slothfully),
וְאָר֕וּר (and cursed is) מֹנֵ֥עַ (the one withholding)
חַרְבּ֖וֹ (his sword) מִדָּֽם׃ (from blood).
11 שַׁאֲנַ֨ן (Has been at ease) מוֹאָ֜ב (Moab) מִנְּעוּרָ֗יו (from his youth),
וְשֹׁקֵ֥ט (and has been resting) הוּא֙ (he) אֶל־ (upon) שְׁמָרָ֔יו (his dregs),
וְלֹֽא־ (and not) הוּרַ֤ק (has he been emptied) מִכְּלִי֙ (from vessel) אֶל־ (to) כֶּ֔לִי (vessel),
וּבַגּוֹלָ֖ה (and into exile). לֹ֣א (Not) הָלָ֑ךְ (has he gone)
עַל־ (For) כֵּ֗ן (thus) עָמַ֤ד (stands) טַעְמוֹ֙ (his taste) בּ֔וֹ (in him)
וְרֵיח֖וֹ (and his scent) לֹ֥א (not) נָמָֽר׃ס (has changed).
12 לָכֵ֞ן (Therefore), הִנֵּ֖ה־ (behold), יָמִ֤ים (the days) בָּאִים֙ (are coming),
נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH),
וְשִׁלַּחְתִּי־ (when I will send) ל֥וֹ (to him) צֹעִ֖ים (those tipping over pots),
וְצֵעֻ֑הוּ (and they will tip him over),
וְכֵלָ֣יו (and his vessels), יָרִ֔יקוּ (they will empty)
וְנִבְלֵיהֶ֖ם (and the bottles) יְנַפֵּֽצוּ׃ (they will break).
13 וּבֹ֥שׁ (And will be ashamed) מוֹאָ֖ב (Moab) מִכְּמ֑וֹשׁ (of Chemosh)
כַּאֲשֶׁר־ (as) בֹּ֙שׁוּ֙ (was ashamed) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) מִבֵּ֥ית (of Beth-)
אֵ֖ל (el) מִבְטֶחָֽם׃ (their source of trust).
14 אֵ֚יךְ (How) תֹּֽאמְר֔וּ (can you⁺ say) גִּבּוֹרִ֖ים (Mighty) אֲנָ֑חְנוּ (we are)
וְאַנְשֵׁי־ (and men) חַ֖יִל (of strength) לַמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ (for battle)?
15 שֻׁדַּ֤ד (Has been laid waste), מוֹאָב֙ (Moab)
וְעָרֶ֣יהָ (and from her cities), עָלָ֔ה (he has gone up)
וּמִבְחַ֥ר (and the choicest) בַּֽחוּרָ֖יו (of her young men)
יָרְד֣וּ (go down) לַטָּ֑בַח (to the slaughter)
נְאֻ֨ם־ (a declaration) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the King),
יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֖וֹת (Hosts) שְׁמֽוֹ׃ (is His name).
16 קָר֥וֹב (Is near) אֵיד־ (the doom) מוֹאָ֖ב (of Moab) לָב֑וֹא (to coming),
וְרָ֣עָת֔וֹ (and his affliction) מִהֲרָ֖ה (has hurried) מְאֹֽד׃ (quickly).
17 נֻ֤דוּ (Bemoan) לוֹ֙ (for him) כָּל־ (all) סְבִיבָ֔יו (who surround him)
וְכֹ֖ל (and all) יֹדְעֵ֣י (who know) שְׁמ֑וֹ (his name),
אִמְר֗וּ (say), אֵיכָ֤ה (How) נִשְׁבַּר֙ (is broken), מַטֵּה־ (the staff) עֹ֔ז (of strength)
מַקֵּ֖ל (the rod)! תִּפְאָרָֽה׃ (Of beauty).
18 רְדִ֤י (Come down) מִכָּבוֹד֙ (from your glory), יֹשְׁבֶי (and sit) בַצָּמָ֔א (in thirst);
יֹשֶׁ֖בֶת (O dweller) בַּת־ (of the daughter) דִּיב֑וֹן (of Dibon),
כִּֽי־ (for) שֹׁדֵ֤ד (the destroyer) מוֹאָב֙ (of Moab) עָ֣לָה (has come) בָ֔ךְ (against you)
שִׁחֵ֖ת (he has destroyed) מִבְצָרָֽיִךְ׃ (your fortifications).
19 אֶל־ (By) דֶּ֛רֶךְ (the road), עִמְדִ֥י (stand) וְצַפִּ֖י (and watch);
יוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת (O dweller) עֲרוֹעֵ֑ר (of Aroer),
שַׁאֲלִי־ (ask of) נָ֣ס (him fleeing), וְנִמְלָ֔טָה (and her escaping),
אִמְרִ֖י (Say), מַה־ (What) נִּֽהְיָֽתָה׃ (has happened).
20 הֹבִ֥ישׁ (Is put to shame); מוֹאָ֛ב (Moab) כִּֽי־ (for) חַ֖תָּה (she has been shattered);
הֵילִילִי (Wail) וּזְעָקִי (and cry out);
הַגִּ֣ידוּ (Declare it) בְאַרְנ֔וֹן (in Arnon),
כִּ֥י (that) שֻׁדַּ֖ד (has been laid waste), מוֹאָֽב׃ (Moab).
21 וּמִשְׁפָּ֥ט (And judgment) בָּ֖א (has come) אֶל־ (to) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land); הַמִּישֹׁ֑ר (of the plain)
אֶל־ (to) חֹל֥וֹן (Holon), וְאֶל־ (and to) יַ֖הְצָה (Jahzah), וְעַל־ (and on) מוֹפָעַת׃ (Mephaath),
22 וְעַל־ (and on) דִּיב֣וֹן (Dibon), וְעַל־ (and on) נְב֔וֹ (Nebo), וְעַל־ (and on) בֵּ֖ית (Beth-) דִּבְלָתָֽיִם׃ (diblathaim),
23 וְעַ֧ל (and on) קִרְיָתַ֛יִם (Kiriathaim), וְעַל־ (and on) בֵּ֥ית (Beth-) גָּמ֖וּל (gamul), וְעַל־ (and on) בֵּ֥ית (Beth-) מְעֽוֹן׃ (Meon),
24 וְעַל־ (and on) קְרִיּ֖וֹת (Kerioth), וְעַל־ (and on) בָּצְרָ֑ה (Bozrah), וְעַ֗ל (and on) כָּל־ (all) עָרֵי֙ (the cities) אֶ֣רֶץ (of the land) מוֹאָ֔ב (of Moab),
הָרְחֹק֖וֹת (those far off) וְהַקְּרֹבֽוֹת׃ (and those nearby).
25 נִגְדְּעָה֙ (Has been cut off), קֶ֣רֶן (the horn) מוֹאָ֔ב (of Moab)
וּזְרֹע֖וֹ (and his arm) נִשְׁבָּ֑רָה (has been broken),
נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).
26 הַשְׁכִּירֻ֕הוּ (Make him drunk);
כִּ֥י (because) עַל־ (against) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH); הִגְדִּ֑יל (he has magnified himself)
וְסָפַ֤ק (and will wallow) מוֹאָב֙ (Moab) בְּקִיא֔וֹ (in his vomit),
וְהָיָ֥ה (and will be) לִשְׂחֹ֖ק (a laughingstock) גַּם־ (also) הֽוּא׃ (he).
27 וְאִ֣ם׀ (For did) ל֣וֹא (not) הַשְּׂחֹ֗ק (a laughingstock) הָיָ֤ה (come to be) לְךָ֙ (for you) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel)
אִם־ (was) בְּגַנָּבִ֖ים (among thieves) נִמְצָאָה (he found)
כִּֽי־ (that) מִדֵּ֧י (from everyone) דְבָרֶ֥יךָ (of your words)
בּ֖וֹ (about him) תִּתְנוֹדָֽד׃ (you shake your head in scorn).
28 עִזְב֤וּ (Leave behind) עָרִים֙ (the cities), וְשִׁכְנ֣וּ (and dwell) בַּסֶּ֔לַע (in the cliff),
יֹשְׁבֵ֖י (O dwellers) מוֹאָ֑ב (of Moab),
וִֽהְי֣וּ (and become) כְיוֹנָ֔ה (like the dove)
תְּקַנֵּ֖ן (that nests) בְּעֶבְרֵ֥י (in the sides) פִי־ (of the mouth) פָֽחַת׃ (of a cave).
29 שָׁמַ֥עְנוּ (We have heard) גְאוֹן־ (the pride) מוֹאָ֖ב (of Moab),
גֵּאֶ֣ה (pride) מְאֹ֑ד (his exceeding)
גָּבְה֧וֹ (his loftiness), וּגְאוֹנ֛וֹ (and his arrogance), וְגַאֲוָת֖וֹ (and his pridefulness), וְרֻ֥ם (and the haughtiness) לִבּֽוֹ׃ (of his heart).
30 אֲנִ֤י (I) יָדַ֙עְתִּי֙ (know)
נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH); עֶבְרָת֖וֹ (His insolence),
וְלֹא־ (not) כֵ֑ן (are trustworthy); בַּדָּ֖יו (his boasts)
לֹא־ (not) כֵ֥ן (are trustworthy) עָשֽׂוּ׃ (his deeds).
31 עַל־ (For) כֵּן֙ (thus) עַל־ (over) מוֹאָ֣ב (Moab), אֲיֵלִ֔יל (do I wail)
וּלְמוֹאָ֥ב (and for Moab); כֻּלֹּ֖ה (all of him) אֶזְעָ֑ק (I will cry out)
אֶל־ (for) אַנְשֵׁ֥י (the men) קִֽיר־ (of Kir-) חֶ֖רֶשׂ (Heres) יֶהְגֶּֽה׃ (I will moan).
32 מִבְּכִ֨י (With the weeping) יַעְזֵ֤ר (of Jazer); אֶבְכֶּה־ (do I weep) לָּךְ֙ (for you)
הַגֶּ֣פֶן (O vine) שִׂבְמָ֔ה (of Sibmah),
נְטִֽישֹׁתַ֙יִךְ֙ (Your tendrils) עָ֣בְרוּ (have gone out over) יָ֔ם (the sea),
עַ֛ד (as far as) יָ֥ם (the sea) יַעְזֵ֖ר (of Jazer); נָגָ֑עוּ (they reach)
עַל־ (upon) קֵיצֵ֥ךְ (your summer fruit) וְעַל־ (and upon) בְּצִירֵ֖ךְ (your vintage)
שֹׁדֵ֥ד (the destroyer) נָפָֽל׃ (has fallen).
33 וְנֶאֶסְפָ֨ה (And are gathered up) שִׂמְחָ֥ה (gladness) וָגִ֛יל (and rejoicing) מִכַּרְמֶ֖ל (from the fertile field),
וּמֵאֶ֣רֶץ (and from the land) מוֹאָ֑ב (of Moab);
וְיַ֙יִן֙ (and the wine) מִיקָבִ֣ים (from the winepresses); הִשְׁבַּ֔תִּי (I have made to cease)
לֹֽא־ (not) יִדְרֹ֣ךְ (does one tread the grapes) הֵידָ֔ד (with a shout of joy);
הֵידָ֖ד (the shout is) לֹ֥א (not) הֵידָֽד׃ (a shout).
34 מִזַּעֲקַ֨ת (From the outcry) חֶשְׁבּ֜וֹן (of Heshbon) עַד־ (unto) אֶלְעָלֵ֗ה (Elealeh),
עַד־ (and unto) יַ֙הַץ֙ (Jahaz), נָתְנ֣וּ (they have given forth) קוֹלָ֔ם (their voice),
מִצֹּ֙עַר֙ (from Zoar) עַד־ (to) חֹ֣רֹנַ֔יִם (Horonaim), עֶגְלַ֖ת (and Eglath-) שְׁלִֽשִׁיָּ֑ה (Shelishiyah);
כִּ֚י (for) גַּם־ (also) מֵ֣י (the waters) נִמְרִ֔ים (of Nimrim) לִמְשַׁמּ֖וֹת (desolations) יִהְיֽוּ׃ (have become).
35 וְהִשְׁבַּתִּ֥י (And I will make cease) לְמוֹאָ֖ב (in Moab),
נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH),
מַעֲלֶ֣ה (The one bringing up) בָמָ֔ה (in the high places),
וּמַקְטִ֖יר (and burning incense) לֵאלֹהָֽיו׃ (to his gods).
36 עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֞ן (thus) לִבִּ֤י (My heart) לְמוֹאָב֙ (for Moab) כַּחֲלִלִ֣ים (like flutes), יֶהֱמֶ֔ה (does wail)
וְלִבִּי֙ (and My heart) אֶל־ (for) אַנְשֵׁ֣י (the men) קִֽיר־ (Kir-) חֶ֔רֶשׂ (Heres). כַּחֲלִילִ֖ים (Like flutes) יֶהֱמֶ֑ה (does wail)
עַל־ (upon) כֵּ֛ן (thus) יִתְרַ֥ת (the wealth) עָשָׂ֖ה (they have acquired) אָבָֽדוּ׃ (has perished).
37 כִּ֤י (For) כָל־ (every) רֹאשׁ֙ (head) קָרְחָ֔ה (is bald),
וְכָל־ (and every) זָקָ֖ן (beard) גְּרֻעָ֑ה (is diminished);
עַ֤ל (on) כָּל־ (all) יָדַ֙יִם֙ (the hands) גְּדֻדֹ֔ת (are cuts)
וְעַל־ (and upon) מָתְנַ֖יִם (the loins) שָֽׂק׃ (is sackcloth).
38 עַ֣ל (On) כָּל־ (all) גַּגּ֥וֹת (the housetops) מוֹאָ֛ב (of Moab),
וּבִרְחֹבֹתֶ֖יהָ (and in her streets)
כֻּלֹּ֣ה (everywhere is) מִסְפֵּ֑ד (lamentation)
כִּֽי־ (for) שָׁבַ֣רְתִּי (I have broken) אֶת־ (-) מוֹאָ֗ב (Moab) כִּכְלִ֛י (like a vessel) אֵֽין־ (without) חֵ֥פֶץ (delight), בּ֖וֹ (in it)
נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).
39 אֵ֥יךְ (How) חַ֙תָּה֙ (she is broken)! הֵילִ֔ילוּ (How they wail),
אֵ֛יךְ (How) הִפְנָה־ (has turned) עֹ֥רֶף (her neck) מוֹאָ֖ב (Moab) בּ֑וֹשׁ (having been put to shame)!
וְהָיָ֥ה (And has become) מוֹאָ֛ב (Moab) לִשְׂחֹ֥ק (a derision) וְלִמְחִתָּ֖ה (and for a horror)
לְכָל־ (to all those) סְבִיבָֽיו׃ס (around him).
40 כִּי־ (For) כֹה֙ (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH);
הִנֵּ֥ה (behold), כַנֶּ֖שֶׁר (like an eagle), יִדְאֶ֑ה (does fly)
וּפָרַ֥שׂ (and spreads) כְּנָפָ֖יו (his wings) אֶל־ (against) מוֹאָֽב׃ (Moab).
41 נִלְכְּדָה֙ (Is captured), הַקְּרִיּ֔וֹת (Kerioth)
וְהַמְּצָד֖וֹת (and the strongholds) נִתְפָּ֑שָׂה (are caught),
וְֽ֠הָיָה (and will be) לֵ֞ב (the heart) גִּבּוֹרֵ֤י (of the mighty ones) מוֹאָב֙ (of Moab) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day) הַה֔וּא (that)
כְּלֵ֖ב (like the heart) אִשָּׁ֥ה (of a woman) מְצֵרָֽה׃ (in labor).
42 וְנִשְׁמַ֥ד (And will be destroyed) מוֹאָ֖ב (Moab) מֵעָ֑ם (as a nation),
כִּ֥י (because) עַל־ (against) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) הִגְדִּֽיל׃ (he has magnified himself).
43 פַּ֥חַד (Terror), וָפַ֖חַת (and pit), וָפָ֑ח (and snare), עָלֶ֛יךָ (are upon you) יוֹשֵׁ֥ב (O inhabitant) מוֹאָ֖ב (of Moab),
נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).
44 הַנִּיס (The one who flees) מִפְּנֵ֤י (from) הַפַּ֙חַד֙ (the terror)
יִפֹּ֣ל (will fall) אֶל־ (into) הַפַּ֔חַת (the pit);
וְהָֽעֹלֶה֙ (and the one coming up) מִן־ (from) הַפַּ֔חַת (the pit)
יִלָּכֵ֖ד (will be caught) בַּפָּ֑ח (in the snare);
כִּֽי־ (for) אָבִ֨יא (I will bring) אֵלֶ֧יהָ (upon her) אֶל־ (upon) מוֹאָ֛ב (Moab),
שְׁנַ֥ת (the year) פְּקֻדָּתָ֖ם (of their punishment),
נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).
45 בְּצֵ֥ל (In the shadow) חֶשְׁבּ֛וֹן (of Heshbon) עָמְד֖וּ (stand) מִכֹּ֣חַ (powerless); נָסִ֑ים (those fleeing)
כִּֽי־ (for) אֵ֞שׁ (a fire) יָצָ֣א (has gone forth) מֵחֶשְׁבּ֗וֹן (from Heshbon)
וְלֶֽהָבָה֙ (and a flame) מִבֵּ֣ין (from the midst) סִיח֔וֹן (of Sihon),
וַתֹּ֙אכַל֙ (and it devours) פְּאַ֣ת (the forehead) מוֹאָ֔ב (of Moab),
וְקָדְקֹ֖ד (and the crown) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) שָׁאֽוֹן׃ (of tumult).
46 אוֹי־ (Woe) לְךָ֣ (to you) מוֹאָ֔ב (O Moab)!
אָבַ֖ד (Have perished); עַם־ (the people) כְּמ֑וֹשׁ (of Chemosh)
כִּֽי־ (for) לֻקְּח֤וּ (have been taken) בָנֶ֙יךָ֙ (your sons) בַּשֶּׁ֔בִי (into captivity),
וּבְנֹתֶ֖יךָ (and your daughters) בַּשִּׁבְיָֽה׃ (in captivity).
47 וְשַׁבְתִּ֧י (And I will return) שְׁבוּת־ (the captive) מוֹאָ֛ב (of Moab) בְּאַחֲרִ֥ית (in the latter) הַיָּמִ֖ים (days),
נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH).
עַד־ (As far as) הֵ֖נָּה (here) מִשְׁפַּ֥ט (is the judgment) מוֹאָֽב׃ס (of Moab).
