The Burden against Moab
(Jeremiah 48:1–47)

1  מַשָּׂ֖א (The burden) מוֹאָ֑ב (of Moab):

כִּ֠י (See) בְּלֵ֞יל (in a night) שֻׁדַּ֨ד (is laid waste) עָ֤ר (Ar) מוֹאָב֙ (of Moab)—

נִדְמָ֔ה (it has been cut off)

כִּ֗י (because) בְּלֵ֛יל (in a night) שֻׁדַּ֥ד (is laid waste)— קִיר־ (Kir) מוֹאָ֖ב (of Moab)

נִדְמָֽה׃ (it has been cut off).

2  עָלָ֨ה (He has gone up) הַבַּ֧יִת (to Bajith) וְדִיבֹ֛ן (and to Dibon),

הַבָּמ֖וֹת (to the high places), לְבֶ֑כִי (to weep)

עַל־ (over) נְב֞וֹ (Nebo) וְעַ֤ל (and over) מֵֽידְבָא֙ (Medeba);

מוֹאָ֣ב (Moab) יְיֵלִ֔יל (is wailing).

בְּכָל־ (On all) רֹאשָׁ֣יו (its heads) קָרְחָ֔ה (is baldness),

כָּל־ (and every) זָקָ֖ן (beard) גְּרוּעָֽה׃ (is cut off).

3  בְּחוּצֹתָ֖יו (In its streets) חָ֣גְרוּ (they have girded on) שָׂ֑ק (sackcloth);

עַ֣ל (on) גַּגּוֹתֶ֧יהָ (its rooftops) וּבִרְחֹבֹתֶ֛יהָ (and in the square),

כֻּלֹּ֥ה (everyone) יְיֵלִ֖יל (wails), יֹרֵ֥ד (going down) בַּבֶּֽכִי׃ (with weeping).

4  וַתִּזְעַ֤ק (And cry out) חֶשְׁבּוֹן֙ (Heshbon) וְאֶלְעָלֵ֔ה (and Elealeh);

עַד־ (as far as) יַ֖הַץ (Jahaz) נִשְׁמַ֣ע (is heard) קוֹלָ֑ם (their voice).

עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֗ן (thus) חֲלֻצֵ֤י (the armed ones) מוֹאָב֙ (of Moab) יָרִ֔יעוּ (cry out);

נַפְשׁ֖וֹ (his soul) יָ֥רְעָה (trembles) לּֽוֹ׃ (within him).

5  לִבִּי֙ (My heart) לְמוֹאָ֣ב (for Moab) יִזְעָ֔ק (cries out),

בְּרִיחֶ֕הָ (for her fugitives) עַד־ (are as far as) צֹ֖עַר (Zoar),

עֶגְלַ֣ת (to Eglath-) שְׁלִשִׁיָּ֑ה (Shelishiyyah).

כִּ֣י׀ (For) מַעֲלֵ֣ה (the Ascent) הַלּוּחִ֗ית (of Luhith) בִּבְכִי֙ (with weeping) יַֽעֲלֶה־ (he goes up) בּ֔וֹ (on it),

כִּ֚י (for) דֶּ֣רֶךְ (on the road) חוֹרֹנַ֔יִם (of Horonaim) זַעֲקַת־ (a cry) שֶׁ֖בֶר (from destruction) יְעֹעֵֽרוּ׃ (they raise up).

6  כִּֽי־ (For) מֵ֥י (the waters) נִמְרִ֖ים (of Nimrim) מְשַׁמּ֣וֹת (desolations) יִֽהְי֑וּ (have become),

כִּֽי־ (for) יָבֵ֤שׁ (has withered away) חָצִיר֙ (the grass).

כָּ֣לָה (Is finished) דֶ֔שֶׁא (the vegetation)

יֶ֖רֶק (of green); לֹ֥א (nothing) הָיָֽה׃ (is there).

7  עַל־ (For) כֵּ֖ן (thus) יִתְרָ֣ה (the abundance) עָשָׂ֑ה (he made), וּפְקֻדָּתָ֔ם (and their store)

עַ֛ל (over) נַ֥חַל (the Brook) הָעֲרָבִ֖ים (of the Willows) יִשָּׂאֽוּם׃ (they carry them).

8  כִּֽי־ (For) הִקִּ֥יפָה (has gone all around) הַזְּעָקָ֖ה (the outcry) אֶת־ (-) גְּב֣וּל (the borders) מוֹאָ֑ב (of Moab);

עַד־ (as far as) אֶגְלַ֙יִם֙ (Eglaim) יִלְלָתָ֔הּ (is her howling),

וּבְאֵ֥ר (and in Beer-) אֵילִ֖ים (elim) יִלְלָתָֽהּ׃ (is her howling).

9  כִּ֣י (For) מֵ֤י (the waters) דִימוֹן֙ (of Dimon) מָ֣לְאוּ (have been full of) דָ֔ם (blood),

כִּֽי־ (for) אָשִׁ֥ית (I will put) עַל־ (upon) דִּימ֖וֹן (Dimon) נוֹסָפ֑וֹת (added things),

לִפְלֵיטַ֤ת (for the survivor) מוֹאָב֙ (of Moab) אַרְיֵ֔ה (a lion)

וְלִשְׁאֵרִ֖ית (and for the remnant) אֲדָמָֽה׃ (of the land).
