Berean Study Bible The LORD Will Not Forget His PeopleGod alone possesses the right and authority to judge evil. As Israel’s defender, He acts against those who oppress the innocent, reject His law, and exalt themselves through violence. His vengeance is holy justice, not sinful personal retaliation. Nam 1:2 The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging… O God of vengeance, The repeated appeal expresses confidence that wrongdoing will not remain unanswered. Though the wicked may appear secure for a time, the Judge of all the earth sees their deeds and will bring them into account. Psa 18:47 the God who avenges me and subdues nations beneath me, shine forth. The psalmist calls for God to reveal His power openly by exposing evil and establishing justice. God’s appearing brings light where the wicked have worked in secrecy and anticipates the final judgment carried out by Christ. Psa 80:1 For the choirmaster. To the tune of “The Lilies… Rise up, O Judge of the earth; God is called to act openly against the wicked who oppress His people. As Judge of all mankind, He sees injustice that human courts ignore and possesses the authority to bring every ruler and nation under His righteous judgment. Psa 82:8 Arise, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations… render a reward to the proud. The proud exalt themselves against God and mistreat others as though they will never answer for their deeds. The psalmist asks for the just recompense their actions deserve, trusting that God will not allow arrogance and violence to prevail indefinitely. Psa 31:23 Love the LORD, all His saints. The LORD preserves… How long will the wicked, O LORD, The psalmist cries out over the apparent delay of God’s judgment as evil men prosper and oppress others. His appeal rests on God’s character as the righteous Judge who sees injustice and will act in His appointed time. Psa 74:10 How long, O God, will the enemy taunt You?… how long will the wicked exult? The wicked do not merely escape punishment for a season; they boast in their violence, power, and seeming security. Their triumph is temporary, and the psalm anticipates the day when the Lord will end their arrogance and uphold the righteous. Psa 25:2 In You, my God, I trust. Do not let me be put to shame;… They pour out arrogant words; The wicked speak freely and continually with pride, treating their own judgment and power as supreme. Their words reveal contempt for God’s rule and disregard for the suffering they cause. In a setting where the righteous were oppressed, such speech exposed their confidence that they would escape accountability. Psa 59:7 See what they spew from their mouths—sharp words… all workers of iniquity boast. Those committed to evil take pride in their actions and accomplishments, openly celebrating what God condemns. Their boasting contrasts with the faithful dependence of the righteous and anticipates the judgment that will bring their apparent success to an end. Psa 10:3 For the wicked man boasts in the cravings of his heart;… They crush Your people, O LORD; Israel repeatedly endured harsh oppression at the hands of foreign powers, including Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon. Their suffering exposed the violence of nations that defied God while afflicting those He had called to belong to Him. Isa 3:15 Why do you crush My people and grind the faces of the poor…… they oppress Your heritage. Israel was the LORD’s covenant possession, chosen to bear His name among the nations. Their oppressors treated God’s inheritance as though He would not defend them, yet the psalm anticipates His righteous judgment and deliverance. Jer 50:11 Because you rejoice, because you sing in triumph… They kill the widow and the foreigner; Widows and foreigners often lacked family protection, property, and legal influence in Israelite society. God had commanded His people to protect such persons, so their murder exposed open rebellion against His law and a society ruled by violence rather than justice. Deu 24:17-18 Do not deny justice to the foreigner or the fatherless,… they murder the fatherless. Orphans, or the fatherless, were especially helpless after the loss of a father, who ordinarily provided protection and support. Those described by the psalmist prey upon people unable to defend themselves, revealing the extent of their cruelty. Their crimes do not escape God, who sees the oppressed and will judge those who shed innocent blood. Job 24:9 The fatherless infant is snatched from the breast;… They say, The wicked speak with confidence, assuming their oppression and violence will go unanswered. Their words expose a settled disregard for God’s authority and justice. Psa 10:11 He says to himself, “God has forgotten; He hides His face… “The LORD does not see; They deny that God observes their actions, treating His patience as indifference and His delay in judgment as permission to continue in evil. Ezk 8:12 “Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see what the elders… the God of Jacob pays no heed.” The God who bound Himself to Israel through His covenant with Jacob is neither absent nor unaware. Though He may allow the wicked to prosper for a time, He knows their deeds and will judge them. Isa 40:27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and why do you assert, O Israel… Take notice, O senseless among the people! Israel’s unbelieving and complacent members are summoned to recognize God’s rule over human conduct. Their failure was not lack of information but refusal to acknowledge the God who sees, hears, and judges. Jer 5:21 Hear this, O foolish and senseless people…… O fools, when will you be wise? Their foolishness lay in living without reverence for God and assuming their wrongdoing would escape His notice. The question presses them toward repentance, calling them to abandon rebellion and submit to the wisdom God has revealed. Pro 8:5 O simple ones, learn to be shrewd; O fools,… He who affixed the ear, can He not hear? God, who created human hearing, is not distant from the cries, words, and deeds of those He made. The question rebukes the false assumption that the Lord is unaware of injustice or indifferent to the suffering of His people. Pro 20:12 Ears that hear and eyes that see—the LORD has made them both… He who formed the eye, can He not see? The Creator who fashioned sight sees every act of oppression and every hidden intention. Human rulers may escape earthly judgment for a time, but nothing is concealed from God, whose knowledge establishes the certainty of His righteous judgment. Pro 15:3 The eyes of the LORD are in every place… He who admonishes the nations, God rules over every people and kingdom, holding nations accountable for their violence, idolatry, pride, and injustice. His judgments in history, including the downfall of empires that defied Him, demonstrate that no nation stands beyond His authority. Psa 9:5 You have rebuked the nations; You have destroyed the wicked;… does He not discipline? His discipline exposes evil and restrains it, while also calling His people to repentance and obedience. Job 5:17 Blessed indeed is the man whom God corrects; … He who teaches man, The Lord gives moral understanding and reveals the way of righteousness, instructing humanity through His works, His law, and His revealed word. Job 36:22 Behold, God is exalted in His power… does He lack knowledge? God sees every deed and knows every thought. His judgment is never uninformed, delayed by ignorance, or mistaken in its purpose. Job 21:22 Can anyone teach knowledge to God, since He judges… The LORD knows the thoughts of man, God sees beyond outward actions and appearances, fully aware of every motive, plan, and hidden intention. His judgment is therefore righteous, since no human heart is concealed from Him. Jer 17:10 I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind… that they are futile. Human reasoning apart from God cannot produce lasting wisdom or establish justice. The schemes of the wicked, however confident they appear, are empty before the Lord and will not overturn His purposes. 1Co 3:20 And again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise… Blessed is the man You discipline, O LORD, God’s discipline is a mark of His fatherly care, not rejection. He corrects His people to turn them from sin, preserve them from greater harm, and restore them to faithful obedience. Israel repeatedly experienced such correction when they wandered from the covenant, yet the LORD remained personally committed to His people. Job 5:17 Blessed indeed is the man whom God corrects; … and teach from Your law, Correction is joined with instruction. God does not merely expose wrongdoing; He reveals the path of righteousness through His commands. His law shaped Israel’s worship, justice, family life, and conduct among the nations, giving His people a clear standard for living under His rule. Deu 31:12-13 Assemble the people—men, women, children… to grant him relief from days of trouble, God gives the righteous rest and stability during seasons of oppression and distress. Though Israel often endured invasion, exile, and persecution, the Lord’s discipline and protection preserved those who trusted Him until His purposes were fulfilled. 2Th 1:7 to grant relief to you who are oppressed and to us as well… until a pit is dug for the wicked. The wicked may appear secure for a time, but God’s judgment is certain. Their schemes and violence ultimately lead to their own downfall, as God establishes justice and deals with those who oppose His people. Psa 7:15-16 He has dug a hole and hollowed it out;… For the LORD will not forsake His people; Though Israel faced oppression, exile, and divine discipline for disobedience, the Lord did not cancel His covenant with the nation He chose. He remained present through judgment and preserved a remnant according to His promises to the patriarchs. 1Sa 12:22 Indeed, for the sake of His great name… He will never abandon His heritage. Israel is the Lord’s possession, set apart for His purposes among the nations. Human unfaithfulness does not overturn God’s faithfulness, and His covenant plans for His people remain secure. The Messiah’s redemption confirms God’s purpose to save and restore all who belong to Him. Psa 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,… Surely judgment will again be righteous, Though injustice and oppression had temporarily prevailed, the psalmist looked ahead to the certainty of God’s intervention. The Lord would restore justice according to His righteous standard and bring the wicked to account. Psa 72:1-2 Endow the king with Your justice, O God,… and all the upright in heart will follow it. Those devoted to God would recognize and embrace His judgments. Their loyalty would not rest with corrupt rulers or unjust systems, but with the Lord whose rule is altogether right. Psa 32:11 Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, O righteous ones;… Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Surrounded by evildoers and unjust rulers, the psalmist asks who will take his side against those who defy God and harm the innocent. Human strength is inadequate against such opposition, and the question leads to confidence that the LORD Himself is the righteous defender and judge. Psa 12:5 “For the cause of the oppressed and for the groaning of the needy,”… Who will stand for me against the workers of iniquity? The appeal seeks one who will stand firmly in defense against those committed to evil. Their actions are deliberate and destructive, but God sees their injustice and will not abandon His people. He alone can restrain the wicked and bring their evil deeds under judgment. 2Ti 4:16-17 At my first defense, no one stood with me,… Unless the LORD had been my helper, The psalmist credits his survival to the LORD’s active protection. Surrounded by wicked rulers and oppressors, he recognizes that human strength alone could not preserve him. Psa 124:1-2 A song of ascents. Of David. If the LORD had not been… I would soon have dwelt Without God’s intervention, his ruin seemed imminent. The danger was not temporary but threatened to bring his life to its end. Lam 3:6 He has made me dwell in darkness like those dead for ages. in the abode of silence. The silent abode refers to the grave, the realm of the dead. The psalmist’s deliverance preserved him from death and enabled him to continue living under the LORD’s care. Psa 115:17 It is not the dead who praise the LORD,… If I say, “My foot is slipping,” The psalmist acknowledges his weakness and the real danger of falling under the pressure of trouble, temptation, or fear. Psa 38:16 For I said, “Let them not gloat over me—those who taunt me… Your loving devotion, O LORD, God’s faithful covenant love remains steady when human strength fails. Psa 36:7 How precious is Your loving devotion, O God,… supports me. The LORD does not abandon His people in their instability but sustains them and keeps them from being overcome. Psa 18:35 You have given me Your shield of salvation;… When anxiety overwhelms me, When anxiety overwhelms the heart, the psalmist turns to God for comfort and strength. Though Israel faced war, oppression, exile, and personal suffering, God remained faithful amid every threat. Psalm 94:19 does not deny distress but directs burdened believers to the Lord, who sees hidden fears and sustains His people. Psa 61:2 From the ends of the earth I call out to You… Your consolation delights my soul. God’s comfort brings inward relief and renewed joy when circumstances remain difficult. His covenant faithfulness assures His people that they are not abandoned. The Lord’s consolation anticipates the rest and peace found fully in Christ, who gives comfort to the weary and troubled heart. Psa 119:50 This is my comfort in affliction, that Your promise… Can a corrupt throne be Your ally— God’s righteous rule cannot be joined to governments that practice oppression and injustice. Thrones represent earthly authority, yet rulers who reject God’s standards misuse their power and stand under His judgment. Pro 16:12 Wicked behavior is detestable for kings,… one devising mischief by decree? Wicked leaders often give evil the appearance of legitimacy by establishing unjust laws and policies. Such decrees may burden the innocent and protect wrongdoing, but no human authority can make evil acceptable before God. Isa 10:1-2 Woe to those who enact unjust statutes… They band together against the righteous Wicked men often unite to oppose those who live faithfully before God. Daniel experienced such hostility when jealous officials conspired to have him cast into the lions’ den. Jesus likewise warned that His followers would face hatred from a world opposed to Him. Psa 37:12-14 The wicked scheme against the righteous… and condemn the innocent to death. Corrupt rulers and courts can misuse their authority to destroy those who have done no wrong, as happened to Naboth and supremely to Jesus Christ. Though men may pervert justice for a time, God sees every false accusation and will judge those who shed innocent blood. Pro 17:15 Acquitting the guilty and condemning the righteous… But the LORD has been my stronghold, Surrounded by injustice and the apparent success of the wicked, the psalmist rests in the LORD’s proven protection. God is not distant from His people but stands as their secure defense when human courts and rulers fail. Psa 18:2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.… and my God is my rock of refuge. Like a fortress built upon immovable stone, God provides safety and stability amid danger. The psalmist’s confidence rests in the God who judges evil, preserves His people, and remains faithful when every other source of security proves uncertain. Isa 17:10 For you have forgotten the God of your salvation… He will bring upon them their own iniquity God will repay the wicked according to the violence and oppression they have practiced against His people. Their guilt will return upon them under His righteous judgment. Pro 5:22 The iniquities of a wicked man entrap him;… and destroy them for their wickedness. Their destruction is not arbitrary but the deserved outcome of persistent rebellion against God and cruelty toward the innocent. Pro 10:29 The way of the LORD is a refuge to the upright… The LORD our God will destroy them. Israel’s covenant God will act as Judge, defending His people and removing those who refuse His authority. Psa 145:20 The LORD preserves all who love Him, but… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
