“On the first day of the seventh month,

The seventh month, Tishri, normally falls in September or October and began Israel’s civil year. Its first day later became known as Rosh Hashanah. God appointed it as a solemn opening to the month that included the Day of Atonement and the Feast of Tabernacles.

This will be a day for you to sound the trumpets.

The trumpet blasts called Israel to assemble and marked the sacred character of the day. They reminded the people of God’s presence, His past deliverance, and their need to stand ready before Him.

The Day of Atonement

On the tenth day of this seventh month,

Israel observed the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, on the tenth day of Tishrei. Coming after the Feast of Trumpets and before the Feast of Tabernacles, it marked a solemn time for the nation to reckon with sin and receive God’s provision for cleansing.

Rams were also used in various offerings, symbolizing strength and leadership. The inclusion of a ram in the burnt offering highlights the completeness and sufficiency of the sacrifice. In Genesis 22, a ram is provided by God as a substitute for Isaac, prefiguring Christ as the substitutionary sacrifice for humanity.

The number seven often represents completeness or perfection in the Bible. The use of seven lambs signifies the thoroughness and perfection of the offering. Grain and drink offerings accompanied the animal sacrifices as expressions of thanksgiving for God’s provision. Fine flour, oil, and wine represented the fruit of the land and the worshiper’s dependence on the Lord.

Israel was to observe the sacred calendar God established, bringing the required sacrifices during the annual feasts and holy assemblies. These fixed times ordered the nation’s worship around God’s covenant acts and His provision for His people.

The commanded festival offerings did not replace personal acts of devotion. Vow offerings fulfilled promises made to the LORD, while freewill offerings expressed voluntary gratitude, thanksgiving, or devotion.

So Moses spoke all this to the Israelites

Moses faithfully delivered the instructions for Israel’s appointed festivals, sacrifices, and offerings. As God’s covenant mediator, he ensured that the nation received the Lord’s requirements for worship and communal life in the wilderness.
