Genesis 2
Berean Study Bible

The Seventh Day

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed

God brought His work of creation to its intended end. Nothing remained unfinished or incomplete; the world was fully formed, ordered, and prepared according to His purpose.

Gen 1:31 And God looked upon all that He had made…
Exo 20:11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth…
Psa 33:6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made…

in all their vast array.

Every part of creation—from the heavens and their lights to the earth, its creatures, and mankind—stood in its appointed place. The completed order of creation displays God’s wisdom, power, and care, and prepares for the Sabbath rest that follows.

Deu 4:19 When you look to the heavens and see the sun and moon…
Neh 9:6 You alone are the LORD. You created the heavens,…
Psa 148:2-5 Praise Him, all His angels; praise Him…

And by the seventh day

God brought the creation week to its appointed completion. The seventh day established a pattern of wholeness and order within the rhythm of human life.

Heb 4:4 For somewhere He has spoken about the seventh day:…
Exo 20:11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth…
Exo 31:17 It is a sign between Me and the Israelites forever;…

God had finished the work He had been doing;

Every part of creation had been made according to God’s purpose. Nothing remained unfinished, and the completed world reflected His wisdom, power, and authority.

Jhn 17:4 I have glorified You on earth by accomplishing…
Jhn 19:30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said,…

so on that day He rested

God ceased from creating, not because He lacked strength, but because His work was complete. His rest established the pattern later observed in the Sabbath: a set time to cease from ordinary labor and recognize the Creator.

from all His work.

The whole work of creation was complete. God’s cessation marked the boundary between His finished creative acts and the continuing order of the world He had made.

Psa 104:24 How many are Your works, O LORD! In wisdom…
Psa 92:5 How great are Your works, O LORD, how deep are Your thoughts…

Then God blessed the seventh day

God bestowed special favor on the seventh day, marking it as distinct within the created order. Its blessing established a lasting pattern in which human labor is followed by rest, recognizing God as Creator and provider.

Isa 58:13-14 If you turn your foot from breaking the Sabbath,…
Mrk 2:27 Then Jesus declared, “The Sabbath was made for man,…

and sanctified it,

He sanctified the day, setting it apart as holy and separating it from the other days of the week. This consecration later formed the basis for Israel’s Sabbath observance and showed that time itself belongs to God.

Exo 31:13 Tell the Israelites, ‘Surely you must keep My Sabbaths,…
Ezk 20:12 I also gave them My Sabbaths as a sign between us,…
Lev 20:8 And you shall keep My statutes and practice them.…

because on that day He rested

God ceased from His work, not from weariness, but because His creation was complete and good. His rest provided the model for mankind’s regular cessation from ordinary labor.

Exo 31:17 It is a sign between Me and the Israelites forever;…
Heb 4:4 For somewhere He has spoken about the seventh day:…
Heb 4:10 For whoever enters God’s rest also rests from his own work,…

from all the work of creation

Every part of the heavens, earth, living creatures, and mankind had been made according to God’s purpose. Nothing remained unfinished or lacking in His work.

Creation was the deliberate fulfillment of God’s will. The completed work of the first creation anticipates the full accomplishment of God’s redemptive purpose through Christ.

Man and Woman in the Garden

This is the account of the heavens and the earth

“This is the account of the heavens and the earth” introduces a new section, a toledot meaning “generations” or “account,” and prepares for the account of mankind’s place within the world God brought into being. The focus now narrows from the completed creation to the formation of Adam, the garden, and the beginning of human history.

Gen 5:1 This is the book of the generations of Adam.…
Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Neh 9:6 You alone are the LORD. You created the heavens,…

when they were created,

“When they were created” emphasizes that all things owe their origin to God’s deliberate work. Heaven, earth, and every creature were not self-made or accidental but were brought forth according to His purpose.

Psa 148:5 Let them praise the name of the LORD, for He gave…
Psa 33:6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made…
2Pe 3:5 But they deliberately overlook the fact that long ago…

in the day

“In the day” summarizes the entire completed work of creation, looking back over the days in which God made the world and filled it with life.

Exo 20:11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth…
Gen 1:31 And God looked upon all that He had made…
Gen 1:5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness…

that the LORD God made them.

The name LORD God joins the Creator’s sovereign power with His personal relationship to what He has made. The God who formed the heavens and earth is also the One who gives man life, provides for him, commands him, and holds him accountable.

Jhn 1:3 Through Him all things were made, and without Him,…
Col 1:16 For in Him all things were created, things in heaven…
Heb 1:2 But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son…

Now no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth,

The vegetation associated with cultivated fields had not yet come forth.

Psa 65:9-10 You attend to the earth and water it; with abundance…
Psa 104:14 He makes the grass grow for the livestock and provides crops…

nor had any plant of the field sprouted,

for the LORD God had not yet sent rain upon the earth,

Rain had not yet begun to nourish the land.

Job 5:10 He gives rain to the earth and sends water upon the fields.
Deu 11:14 then I will provide rain for your land in season,…
Jer 5:24 They have not said in their hearts, ‘Let us fear the LORD…

and there was no man to cultivate the ground.

Humanity had not yet been created to work the soil and fulfill its appointed stewardship of the earth.

Gen 3:23 Therefore the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden…
Gen 4:2 Later she gave birth to Cain’s brother Abel.…
Pro 28:19 The one who works his land will have plenty of food,…

But springs welled up from the earth

Before the Lord sent rain, water rose from the ground to supply the land. This provision sustained the earth’s vegetation and prepared the setting in which God formed man and planted the garden. The ordered supply of water reflects the abundance and harmony of creation before sin entered the world.

Deu 8:7 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land,…
Psa 104:10 He sends forth springs in the valleys; they flow…
Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, …

and watered the whole surface of the ground.

The land received sufficient water throughout, demonstrating God’s complete care for the world He had made. Later Scripture describes water as essential for life and uses it to portray the spiritual life God provides through Christ.

Psa 65:9-10 You attend to the earth and water it; with abundance…
Deu 11:11 But the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess…
Isa 55:10 For just as rain and snow fall from heaven…

Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground

God personally fashioned the first man from the earth, revealing both humanity’s humble origin and God’s purposeful care in creation. Man was not the result of chance or conflict among gods, as in surrounding ancient accounts, but the direct work of the one true Creator. Though made from dust, Adam was prepared for a distinct place within God’s ordered world.

1Co 15:47 The first man was of the dust of the earth,…
Isa 64:8 But now, O LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay,…
Job 33:6 I am just like you before God; I was also formed from clay.

and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils,

God gave life to the body He had formed. This direct act distinguishes humanity as dependent upon God for life and accountable to Him. Adam’s life began by God’s power and presence, establishing the personal relationship between the Creator and the man He made.

Job 33:4 The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath…
Act 17:25 Nor is He served by human hands, as if He needed anything,…

and the man became a living being.

Adam became a complete, living person—body animated by the life God supplied. He was created to know God, obey His command, exercise moral responsibility, and care for the world placed under his stewardship.

And the LORD God planted a garden

God personally prepared a place suited for man’s life, work, and fellowship with Him. The garden’s order, abundance, and beauty display His purposeful care in creation. It stood as a real place of provision and peace before sin brought death and disorder into the world.

in Eden,

Eden was a region of exceptional fruitfulness and delight, though its exact location cannot now be identified. The garden within Eden represented the unfallen world God had made good, where man lived under God’s blessing and command.

Ezk 31:9 I made it beautiful with its many branches…

in the east,

The location is given from the narrator’s perspective and identifies Eden as a definite historical setting. Later biblical events repeatedly move humanity away from the place of God’s presence because of sin, beginning with the expulsion from this garden.

Gen 4:16 So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD…
Ezk 11:23 And the glory of the LORD rose up from within the city…

where He placed the man

Adam did not choose his own place or purpose. God placed him in the garden to live under His authority, receive His provision, and care for the created world entrusted to him.

Psa 8:5-6 You made him a little lower than the angels;…
Psa 115:16 The highest heavens belong to the LORD, but the earth…

He had formed.

Adam was the work of God’s direct and deliberate creation. Though formed from the ground, he bore God’s image and was given a distinct role among all living creatures.

Isa 43:7 everyone called by My name and created for My glory…
Jer 1:5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…

Out of the ground the LORD God gave growth to every tree that is pleasing to the eye and good for food.

God prepared the garden with abundant trees that provided both nourishment and beauty. The earth from which the trees grew also supplied the dust from which God formed Adam, linking human life and the garden to God’s direct creative work. The garden was not merely a place of survival but a carefully ordered home marked by provision and richness.

Gen 3:6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food…
Gen 1:29 Then God said, “Behold, I have given you…
Gen 1:11-12 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth vegetation:…

And in the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

These two trees stood at the garden’s center as central elements of Adam and Eve’s life before God. The tree of life represented continuing life in God’s presence. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil marked the boundary God established for human obedience. Their presence placed before the first man and woman the reality that life depended on trusting and obeying their Creator.

Now a river flowed out of Eden

God provided an abundant water source for the garden, sustaining its vegetation and the life within it.

and from there it branched into four headwaters:

Beyond Eden, the river divided into four major waterways, indicating that the garden stood at the source of waters extending into the surrounding world. The named rivers connect the account to real geography, though the landscape was greatly altered by the Flood.

Rev 7:1 After this I saw four angels standing…
Mat 24:31 And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call…
Dan 7:2 “In my vision in the night I looked, and suddenly”…

The name of the first river is the Pishon;

The Pishon flowed from Eden as one of four rivers that carried water outward from the garden. Its course cannot now be identified with certainty, likely because the earth’s geography was greatly altered by the Flood.

Rev 22:1-2 Then the angel showed me a river of the water of life, …
Psa 46:4 There is a river whose streams delight the city of God…

it winds through the whole land of Havilah,

Havilah was a real land known for its natural resources. The river’s course through the region points to a well-watered and productive country beyond Eden.

Job 28:15-19 It cannot be bought with gold, nor can its price be weighed…

And the gold of that land is pure,

Havilah possessed resources of exceptional quality, marking it as a land of abundance within the world God had made. Gold’s purity underscores both its value and the richness of the region.

The name of the second river is the Gihon;

The Gihon, meaning “bursting forth,” was one of the four rivers flowing from Eden, supplying the lands beyond the garden. Its modern location cannot be identified with certainty, likely because the geography of the world was greatly altered by the Flood.

Then the LORD God took the man

God personally appointed Adam to his place and task within the created order. Adam’s life and purpose were established by God’s deliberate will.

Psa 139:13-16 For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together…
Act 17:26 From one man He made every nation of men,…

and placed him in the Garden of Eden

Eden was a real garden prepared by God, a place of abundance, order, and fellowship. Adam was not left to provide for himself in a hostile world but was given a home marked by God’s provision.

Ezk 28:13 You were in Eden, the garden of God…
Ezk 31:8-9 The cedars in the garden of God could not rival it;…
Isa 51:3 For the LORD will comfort Zion and will look with compassion…

to cultivate and keep it.

Adam was assigned meaningful work before sin entered the world. He was to tend the garden and guard it, exercising responsible authority over what God had made. Human labor was therefore created as a good calling, while the garden itself remained God’s possession under Adam’s care.

Gen 3:17-19 And to Adam He said: “Because you have listened…
Num 3:7-8 They are to perform duties for him before the Tent…
Num 18:5-7 And you shall attend to the duties of the sanctuary…

And the LORD God commanded him,

God addressed Adam directly, establishing His rightful authority over the man He had formed and placed in Eden. Adam’s life in the garden was governed not by independence but by obedience to his Creator.

Deu 5:32-33 So be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you;…
Jos 22:5 But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law…

“You may eat freely from every tree of the garden,

The command begins with generous provision. Eden supplied Adam with abundant food and freedom to enjoy the trees God had made, demonstrating that God’s instruction was given within the fullness of His care.

Gen 1:29 Then God said, “Behold, I have given you…
Psa 104:14-15 He makes the grass grow for the livestock and provides crops…

but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil;

God gave Adam a specific command within the abundance of Eden, establishing obedience as the proper response to his Creator. The tree marked a real boundary between human stewardship and God’s authority. Adam and Eve were accountable for their choice, and eating would mean rejecting God’s word in favor of self-rule.

Gen 3:3 but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden,…
Deu 30:15-20 See, I have set before you today life and prosperity,…
Pro 3:7-8 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD…

for in the day that you eat of it,

Disobedience would bring certain judgment. On the very day Adam ate, fellowship with God was broken, guilt and shame entered human experience, and humanity came under the sentence of death. The effects of that act extended to the whole human race and to creation itself.

Gen 3:6-7 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food…
Rom 7:9-11 Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came…
Jas 1:14-15 But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires…

you will surely die.”

Death became the consequence of sin: spiritual separation from God, eventual physical death, and exclusion from the tree of life. Adam did not die physically that day, but mortality began, and he stood condemned before God. The fall revealed humanity’s need for redemption and prepared the way for the promised Savior, who brings eternal life to those restored to God.

Ezk 18:20 The soul who sins is the one who will die.…
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God…
Rom 5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man,…

The LORD God also said,

God continued His work in the garden with deliberate care for the man He had formed.

Gen 1:3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
Psa 33:9 For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded…
Isa 55:11 So My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me…

“It is not good for the man to be alone.

Though creation was good, Adam’s solitary condition was incomplete for the human calling God had given him.

Ecc 4:9-10 Two are better than one, because they have a good return…
Psa 68:6 God settles the lonely in families; He leads the prisoners…
Psa 25:16 Turn to me and be gracious, for I am lonely and afflicted.

I will make for him a suitable helper.”

God purposed to create woman as Adam’s corresponding partner, equal in worth and fitted to share life, work, and stewardship with him.

1Co 11:8-9 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man.…
Pro 18:22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing…
Mal 2:14 Yet you ask, “Why?” It is because the LORD has been a witness…

And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air,

God formed the animals as He had formed Adam from the ground, showing that both humanity and the animal world depend on their Creator for life. The beasts of the field and birds of the air represent the varied creatures God made to inhabit the earth and sky. Yet Adam alone was created in God’s image and given a distinct place of responsibility within creation.

Gen 1:24-25 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures”…
Gen 1:20-22 And God said, “Let the waters teem with living creatures,…
Job 12:7-10 But ask the animals, and they will instruct you;…

and He brought them to the man to see what he would name each one.

God brought the animals before Adam and entrusted him with the task of naming them. This was an exercise of the authority God had given man over the living creatures, as well as an opportunity for Adam to observe and distinguish them according to their kinds.

Gen 1:26-28 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image,…
Psa 8:6-8 You made him ruler of the works of Your hands;…
Gen 6:19-20 And you are to bring two of every living creature into the ark…

And whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.

Adam’s names were accepted as the established names of the creatures. The event displays the order God intended in creation: God as Creator, man as His appointed steward, and the animals under man’s care and rule.

Gen 3:20 And Adam named his wife Eve, because she would be the mother…
Gen 4:25 And Adam again had relations with his wife…
Gen 21:3 And Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son…

The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field.

Adam’s naming of the animals demonstrated the authority and stewardship God had entrusted to him over the living creatures. As he observed their kinds and assigned names, the diversity and order of creation were brought before him. Yet among all the animals, none shared his nature or could fulfill the companionship for which he was made.

Gen 1:20-25 And God said, “Let the waters teem with living creatures,…
Psa 8:6-8 You made him ruler of the works of Your hands;…
Job 12:7-10 But ask the animals, and they will instruct you;…

But for Adam no suitable helper was found.

No animal could stand alongside Adam as his corresponding partner. God had created man uniquely in His image, and Adam needed a companion of the same human nature—one who would complement him in life, work, and fellowship. This prepared the way for God’s creation of Eve, establishing marriage as the union of man and woman.

1Co 11:8-9 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man.…
Mrk 10:6-8 However, from the beginning of creation,…
Ecc 4:9-10 Two are better than one, because they have a good return…

So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep,

God personally intervened to create woman while Adam was completely passive. The deep sleep kept him unaware of the work being done and emphasized that woman, like man, came into being by God’s deliberate creative act.

Gen 15:12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep…
1Sa 26:12 So David took the spear and water jug by Saul’s head,…
Job 4:13 In disquieting visions in the night, when deep sleep…

and while he slept,

Adam contributed nothing to the formation of his companion. God alone provided what Adam lacked, preparing a suitable partner for him.

Job 33:15 In a dream, in a vision in the night, when deep sleep…
1Ki 3:5 One night at Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream,…
Gen 31:24 But that night God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream…

He took one of the man’s ribs

Woman was formed from Adam’s own body, showing their shared humanity and intended unity. Taken from his side, she was created to stand beside him as his corresponding helper, not as a lesser creature or a separate kind.

1Co 11:8-9 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man.…
1Ti 2:13 For Adam was formed first, and then Eve.
1Co 11:12 For just as woman came from man, so also man is born…

and closed up the area with flesh.

God healed Adam’s body after taking the rib, demonstrating His care and completeness in every part of His work.

Job 5:18 For He wounds, but He also binds; He strikes…
Psa 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Hos 6:1 Come, let us return to the LORD. For He has torn us…

And from the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man,

God formed the woman from the man’s side, showing their shared humanity and intended companionship. She was neither created from the ground as Adam was nor made to stand apart from him, but was fashioned for a close and equal union with him.

1Co 11:8-9 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man.…
1Ti 2:13 For Adam was formed first, and then Eve.

He made a woman

God’s work was deliberate and complete. Woman was created in God’s image and given a distinct place beside man as the companion suited to him. The Hebrew word for “made” can also mean “built,” emphasizing God’s careful and intentional design. Together, man and woman display the fullness of humanity as God designed it.

1Co 11:12 For just as woman came from man, so also man is born…
Mat 19:4-6 Jesus answered, “Have you not read that from the beginning…
Mrk 10:6-8 However, from the beginning of creation,…

and brought her to him.

God presented the woman to Adam, establishing the first marriage. Their union began by God’s purpose and order, joining a man and woman in a covenant relationship marked by companionship, faithfulness, and shared life.

Gen 24:67 And Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah…
2Co 11:2 I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy…
Eph 5:27 and to present her to Himself as a glorious church,…

And the man said:

Adam’s first recorded words follow God’s presentation of the woman to him. His response expresses recognition, joy, and acceptance of the companion God had made for him.

Gen 3:20 And Adam named his wife Eve, because she would be the mother…
Mat 19:4-6 Jesus answered, “Have you not read that from the beginning…
