I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of his wrath; | I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of the LORD’s wrath. |
אוֹתִ֥י נָהַ֛ג וַיֹּלַ֖ךְ חֹ֥שֶׁךְ וְלֹא־ אֽוֹר׃ | he has driven and brought me into darkness without any light; | He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness rather than light; |
אַ֣ךְ בִּ֥י יָשֻׁ֛ב יַהֲפֹ֥ךְ יָד֖וֹ כָּל־ הַיּֽוֹם׃ ס | surely against me he turns his hand again and again the whole day long. | indeed, he has turned his hand against me again and again, all day long. |
He has made my flesh and my skin waste away; he has broken my bones; | He has made my skin and my flesh grow old and has broken my bones. |
בָּנָ֥ה עָלַ֛י וַיַּקַּ֖ף רֹ֥אשׁ וּתְלָאָֽה׃ | he has besieged and enveloped me with bitterness and tribulation; | He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship. |
בְּמַחֲשַׁכִּ֥ים הוֹשִׁיבַ֖נִי כְּמֵתֵ֥י עוֹלָֽם׃ ס | he has made me dwell in darkness like the dead of long ago. | He has made me dwell in darkness like those long dead. |
גָּדַ֧ר בַּעֲדִ֛י וְלֹ֥א אֵצֵ֖א הִכְבִּ֥יד נְחָשְׁתִּֽי׃ | He has walled me about so that I cannot escape; he has made my chains heavy; | He has walled me in so I cannot escape; he has weighed me down with chains. |
גַּ֣ם כִּ֤י אֶזְעַק֙ וַאֲשַׁוֵּ֔עַ שָׂתַ֖ם תְּפִלָּתִֽי׃ | though I call and cry for help, he shuts out my prayer; | Even when I call out or cry for help, he shuts out my prayer. |
גָּדַ֤ר דְּרָכַי֙ בְּגָזִ֔ית נְתִיבֹתַ֖י עִוָּֽה׃ ס | he has blocked my ways with blocks of stones; he has made my paths crooked. | He has barred my way with blocks of stone; he has made my paths crooked. |
He is a bear lying in wait for me, a lion in hiding; | Like a bear lying in wait, like a lion in hiding, |
דְּרָכַ֥י סוֹרֵ֛ר וַֽיְפַשְּׁחֵ֖נִי שָׂמַ֥נִי שֹׁמֵֽם׃ | he turned aside my steps and tore me to pieces; he has made me desolate; | he dragged me from the path and mangled me and left me without help. |
דָּרַ֤ךְ קַשְׁתוֹ֙ וַיַּצִּיבֵ֔נִי כַּמַּטָּרָ֖א לַחֵֽץ׃ ס | he bent his bow and set me as a target for his arrow. | He drew his bow and made me the target for his arrows. |
He drove into my kidneys the arrows of his quiver; | He pierced my heart with arrows from his quiver. |
הָיִ֤יתִי שְּׂחֹק֙ לְכָל־ עַמִּ֔י נְגִינָתָ֖ם כָּל־ הַיּֽוֹם׃ | I have become the laughingstock of all peoples, the object of their taunts all day long. | I became the laughingstock of all my people; they mock me in song all day long. |
He has filled me with bitterness; he has sated me with wormwood. | He has filled me with bitter herbs and given me gall to drink. |
He has made my teeth grind on gravel, and made me cower in ashes; | He has broken my teeth with gravel; he has trampled me in the dust. |
וַתִּזְנַ֧ח מִשָּׁל֛וֹם נַפְשִׁ֖י נָשִׁ֥יתִי טוֹבָֽה׃ | my soul is bereft of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is; | I have been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is. |
וָאֹמַר֙ אָבַ֣ד נִצְחִ֔י וְתוֹחַלְתִּ֖י מֵיְהוָֽה׃ ס | so I say, “My endurance has perished; so has my hope from the LORD.” | So I say, “My splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the LORD.” |
Remember my affliction and my wanderings, the wormwood and the gall! | I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. |
My soul continually remembers it and is bowed down within me. | I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. |
But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: | Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: |
חַֽסְדֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ כִּ֣י לֹא־ תָ֔מְנוּ כִּ֥י לֹא־ כָל֖וּ רַחֲמָֽיו׃ | The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; | Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. |
חֲדָשִׁים֙ לַבְּקָרִ֔ים רַבָּ֖ה אֱמוּנָתֶֽךָ׃ | they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. | They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. |
חֶלְקִ֤י יְהוָה֙ אָמְרָ֣ה נַפְשִׁ֔י עַל־ כֵּ֖ן אוֹחִ֥יל לֽוֹ׃ ס | “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” | I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” |
The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. | The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; |
It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. | it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. |
It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. | It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. |
Let him sit alone in silence when it is laid on him; | Let him sit alone in silence, for the LORD has laid it on him. |
יִתֵּ֤ן בֶּֽעָפָר֙ פִּ֔יהוּ אוּלַ֖י יֵ֥שׁ תִּקְוָֽה׃ | let him put his mouth in the dust— there may yet be hope; | Let him bury his face in the dust— there may yet be hope. |
יִתֵּ֧ן לְמַכֵּ֛הוּ לֶ֖חִי יִשְׂבַּ֥ע בְּחֶרְפָּֽה׃ ס | let him give his cheek to the one who strikes, and let him be filled with insults. | Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace. |
For the Lord will not cast off forever, | For no one is cast off by the Lord forever. |
כִּ֣י אִם־ הוֹגָ֔ה וְרִחַ֖ם כְּרֹ֥ב [חסדו] (חֲסָדָֽיו׃) | but, though he cause grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love; | Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. |
כִּ֣י לֹ֤א עִנָּה֙ מִלִּבּ֔וֹ וַיַּגֶּ֖ה בְנֵי־ אִֽישׁ׃ ס | for he does not afflict from his heart or grieve the children of men. | For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone. |

לְעַוֵּ֤ת אָדָם֙ בְּרִיב֔וֹ אֲדֹנָ֖י לֹ֥א רָאָֽה׃ ס | to subvert a man in his lawsuit, the Lord does not approve. | to deprive them of justice— would not the Lord see such things? |
Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it? | Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it? |
מִפִּ֤י עֶלְיוֹן֙ לֹ֣א תֵצֵ֔א הָרָע֖וֹת וְהַטּֽוֹב׃ | Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that good and bad come? | Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come? |
מַה־ יִּתְאוֹנֵן֙ אָדָ֣ם חָ֔י גֶּ֖בֶר עַל־ [חטאו] (חֲטָאָֽיו׃) ס | Why should a living man complain, a man, about the punishment of his sins? | Why should the living complain when punished for their sins? |
Let us test and examine our ways, and return to the LORD! | Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD. |
