Leviticus 24
Berean Study Bible

The Oil for the Lamps

Then the LORD said to Moses,

God continued to give Moses direct instruction for Israel’s worship and covenant life. As the appointed mediator, Moses received commands that carried the LORD’s own authority and were to be faithfully conveyed to the people. The instructions that follow concern the lampstand and the bread of the Presence, continual reminders of God’s light, provision, and abiding presence among Israel in the tabernacle.

Exo 25:1 Then the LORD said to Moses,
Num 8:1-2 Then the LORD said to Moses,…
Exo 27:20-21 And you are to command the Israelites to bring you pure oil…

“Command the Israelites

God charged the whole nation to provide what was needed for the sanctuary, where Israel’s covenant worship was carried out according to His instructions.

Num 28:2 Command the Israelites and say to them: See that…
Exo 25:2 “Tell the Israelites to bring Me an offering”…

to bring you pure oil of pressed olives

The people were to supply the finest oil for the lampstand, prepared without contamination and suitable for holy use.

Exo 27:20 And you are to command the Israelites to bring you pure oil…
Exo 35:28 as well as spices and olive oil for the light…

for the light,

The oil fueled the seven lamps of the menorah in the Tabernacle, a visible reminder of the Lord’s dwelling among His people and of the order He established for their worship.

2Ch 13:11 Every morning and every evening they present burnt offerings…
1Sa 3:3 Before the lamp of God had gone out, Samuel was lying down…

Outside the veil of the Testimony in the Tent of Meeting,

The lamps stood in the Holy Place, before the curtain that screened the Most Holy Place and the Ark of the Covenant. This arrangement placed Israel’s daily worship near the visible sign of God’s covenant presence while maintaining the boundary He had established around His holiness.

Exo 30:6 Place the altar in front of the veil that is before the ark…
Exo 26:33-35 And hang the veil from the clasps and place…

Aaron is to tend the lamps continually before the LORD

As high priest, Aaron was responsible for ensuring that the lampstand’s seven lamps remained supplied and properly arranged. The continual light testified that the LORD dwelt among Israel and provided light for worship in the sanctuary.

Exo 27:20-21 And you are to command the Israelites to bring you pure oil…
Exo 30:7-8 And Aaron is to burn fragrant incense on it…

from evening until morning.

The lamps burned through the night, from the evening service until the morning. Their regular care formed part of the ordered ministry of the priests and accompanied the daily rhythm of sacrifice and worship.

1Sa 3:3 Before the lamp of God had gone out, Samuel was lying down…
Psa 134:1-2 A song of ascents. Come, bless the LORD, all you servants…

This is to be a permanent statute for the generations to come.

Israel was to preserve this command throughout its generations as part of the priestly service established by God. The enduring ordinance showed that access to God and worship before Him were to be governed by His appointed means.

The seven-branched lampstand stood in the Holy Place and had been made according to God’s instructions from one piece of pure gold. Its costly material and detailed workmanship suited its place in Israel’s worship.

The Showbread

You are also to take fine flour

Fine flour was reserved for sacred offerings, reflecting the value and purity required in worship before the LORD. Israel was to bring what was carefully prepared and worthy of His presence.

Lev 2:1 “When anyone brings a grain offering to the LORD,…
Num 15:4 then the one presenting his offering to the LORD…
Exo 29:2 along with unleavened bread, unleavened cakes mixed with oil…

1Ch 9:32 Some of their Kohathite relatives were responsible…
1Sa 21:6 So the priest gave him the consecrated bread,…

using two-tenths of an ephah for each loaf,

Each loaf required a substantial measure of flour, making the bread a significant offering. The exact amount emphasized Israel’s duty to follow God’s instructions faithfully in the service of the tabernacle.

Num 15:6 With a ram you are to prepare a grain offering…
Lev 23:13 along with its grain offering of two-tenths…
Num 28:9 On the Sabbath day, present two unblemished lambs…

and set them in two rows—six per row—

The twelve loaves were arranged to represent the twelve tribes of Israel, showing that the whole nation stood before God in the sanctuary. Replaced each Sabbath, the bread remained a continual memorial of Israel’s covenant relationship with the LORD and of His provision for His people.

Exo 40:23 He arranged the bread on it before the LORD,…
Exo 25:30 And place the Bread of the Presence on the table…

on the table of pure gold

The bread rested on a table made for the Holy Place, where every detail reflected the holiness of God’s dwelling. Its gold construction marked the offering as belonging to the sacred service of the tabernacle.

And you are to place pure frankincense near each row,

Pure frankincense was placed beside the two rows of the Bread of the Presence as a holy accompaniment to the bread. Its fragrance marked the offering as belonging wholly to the LORD and reflected the ordered care required in the Tabernacle service.

Lev 2:1 “When anyone brings a grain offering to the LORD,…
Lev 2:15 And you are to put oil and frankincense on it;…
Exo 30:34 The LORD also said to Moses, “Take fragrant spices—…

so that it may serve as a memorial portion for the bread,

The frankincense was burned as the memorial portion, presenting the bread before God and acknowledging that Israel’s daily provision came from Him. The bread remained continually before the LORD as a sign of His covenant presence and care for the twelve tribes.

Punishment for Blasphemy

Now the son of an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father

His parentage reflected Israel’s recent history in Egypt. Though he was connected to Israel through his mother, his Egyptian father set him apart within the camp.

Exo 12:38 And a mixed multitude also went up with them…
Deu 23:7-8 Do not despise an Edomite, for he is your brother.…
Ezr 9:1-2 After these things had been accomplished…

went out among the Israelites,

He lived within the Israelite community during the wilderness journey, where all who dwelt among the people were accountable to the holiness and order God required.

Act 7:23-25 When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit…
Heb 11:24-25 By faith Moses, when he was grown, refused to be called…

and a fight broke out in the camp

The conflict disturbed the camp, the place where Israel lived in the presence of the Lord and learned to govern life according to His commands.

Exo 32:26-28 So Moses stood at the entrance to the camp…
Num 16:2-3 a rebellion against Moses, along with 250 men of Israel…

between him and an Israelite.

The dispute involved a man of mixed ancestry and an Israelite man, setting the context for the judicial matter that followed.

Act 7:26-28 The next day he came upon two Israelites who were fighting,…
Exo 21:18-19 If men are quarreling and one strikes the other…

The son of the Israelite woman

The son of the Israelite woman was born to Shelomith, an Israelite from the tribe of Dan, and an Egyptian father. His case arose within Israel’s camp, where all who lived among the people were accountable to God’s law.

Exo 2:1-2 Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman,…
Deu 23:7-8 Do not despise an Edomite, for he is your brother.…
Neh 13:23-24 In those days I also saw Jews who had married women…

blasphemed the Name with a curse.

He openly reviled the LORD, treating God’s holy name with contempt. Such an offense struck at the heart of Israel’s covenant relationship with God and required judgment according to His command.

Exo 20:7 You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain…
Lev 19:12 You must not swear falsely by My name…
Exo 22:28 You must not blaspheme God or curse the ruler…

So they brought him to Moses.

The people brought the matter before Moses, Israel’s appointed leader and judge, to receive the Lord’s direction concerning the proper penalty.

Num 27:5 So Moses brought their case before the LORD,

Deu 1:17 Show no partiality in judging; hear both small and great…

(His mother’s name was Shelomith daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan.)

The record identifies his family and tribal connection, showing that the offense was addressed publicly and within the accountable life of the covenant community.

Num 26:42-43 These were the descendants of Dan by their clans:…
Num 1:38-39 From the sons of Dan, according to the records…

They placed him in custody

The offender was held by the community after he publicly blasphemed the Name. Because the law had not yet specified the penalty for this offense, he was kept under restraint until God’s judgment was revealed.

Israel’s justice was governed by the Lord’s authority rather than human preference. Moses and the people waited for God to declare how His holiness and His law required the case to be handled.

Num 9:8 “Wait here until I find out what the LORD commands…”…
Jer 42:2-6 Jeremiah the prophet and said, “May our petition come…

The Lord provided the needed ruling, establishing a standard for Israel’s future dealings with blasphemy. The judgment showed that deliberate contempt for God’s Name was a serious offense against the covenant community.

Num 27:5-11 So Moses brought their case before the LORD,…
Deu 17:8-10 If a case is too difficult for you to judge,…
Deu 1:17 Show no partiality in judging; hear both small and great…

Then the LORD said to Moses,

God personally directed Moses as Israel’s appointed mediator and leader. The instruction that follows carried divine authority and addressed a serious violation within the covenant community.

Exo 25:1 Then the LORD said to Moses,
Num 35:1 Again the LORD spoke to Moses on the plains of Moab…

“Take the blasphemer outside the camp,

Israel’s camp was set apart as the place where the Lord dwelt among His people. Removing the offender placed the judgment outside the sacred community and preserved the camp from defilement.

Lev 16:21 Then he is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat…

The entire congregation carried out the sentence, showing that blasphemy against the Lord’s name was an offense against the covenant community. The punishment upheld the holiness of God and the authority of His law.

Deu 31:11-13 when all Israel comes before the LORD your God…

‘If anyone curses his God,

Open contempt for God rejects His authority and profanes the relationship He established with His people. Such rebellion was not treated as a private matter, since it dishonored the God in whose name Israel lived.

Job 2:9 Then Job’s wife said to him, “Do you still retain…
Job 1:11 But stretch out Your hand and strike all that he has…

he shall bear the consequences of his sin.

The offender is held personally accountable under God’s law. The penalty described in the surrounding context guarded the holiness of God’s name and upheld justice within Israel.

Num 15:30-31 But the person who sins defiantly, whether a native…
Lev 5:17 If someone sins and violates any of the LORD’s commandments…
Num 9:13 But if a man who is ceremonially clean…

Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD

Israel was commanded to treat the LORD’s name with reverence because it represented His person, authority, and holiness. Open contempt for Him was rebellion against the God who had established His covenant with the nation.

Num 15:30-31 But the person who sins defiantly, whether a native…
Lev 19:12 You must not swear falsely by My name…
Exo 20:7 You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain…

must surely be put to death;

Under Israel’s theocratic law, blasphemy was a capital offense. Such defiance threatened the purity of worship and the faithfulness of the whole community.

Deu 18:20 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…
Deu 13:5 Such a prophet or dreamer must be put to death,…
Exo 21:17 Anyone who curses his father or mother…

the whole assembly must surely stone him,

The public judgment involved the people as a whole, showing that preserving holiness was a shared responsibility. The punishment also bore witness that rebellion against God could not be treated as a private matter.

Num 15:35-36 And the LORD said to Moses, “The man must surely be put…
Deu 17:5-7 you must bring out to your gates the man or woman…
Deu 13:10-11 Stone him to death for trying to turn you away…

whether he is a foreign resident or native;

Everyone living within Israel’s community was accountable to the same standard. Foreigners who lived among the Israelites were not exempt from the laws that guarded worship of the LORD.

Exo 12:49 The same law shall apply to both the native…
Num 15:15-16 The assembly is to have the same statute both for you…
Num 9:14 If a foreigner dwelling among you wants to observe…

if he blasphemes the Name,

The repetition leaves no room for uncertainty: dishonoring God Himself was a direct offense against His holiness and rule.

Lev 22:32 You must not profane My holy name. I must be acknowledged…
Isa 52:5 And now what have I here? declares the LORD.……
Ezk 36:20-23 And wherever they went among the nations,…

he must be put to death.

The stated penalty upheld the seriousness of sin against God in Israel’s covenant life and demonstrated that His holiness demanded judgment.

Exo 21:12 Whoever strikes and kills a man must surely be put to death.
Num 35:30-31 If anyone kills a person, the murderer is to be put to death…
Deu 21:22-23 If a man has committed a sin worthy of death,…

An Eye for an Eye

And if a man takes the life of anyone else,

Human life bears God’s image and is therefore sacred. Israel’s law distinguished deliberate murder from accidental killing, but the intentional taking of an innocent life was treated as a direct offense against God and the community.

Exo 21:12 Whoever strikes and kills a man must surely be put to death.
Gen 9:6 Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man his blood…
Num 35:16 If, however, anyone strikes a person with an iron object…

he must surely be put to death.

The penalty, reflecting lex talionis, the law of retribution, upheld God’s justice and affirmed the value of the victim’s life. It was to be carried out through lawful judgment, not private revenge, and applied equally to Israelites and foreigners living among them.

Num 35:21 or if in hostility he strikes him with his hand,…
Num 35:30-31 If anyone kills a person, the murderer is to be put to death…
Exo 21:14 But if a man schemes and acts willfully against his neighbor…

Whoever kills an animal

Livestock represented a household’s food, labor, clothing, and economic security in Israel. Destroying another person’s animal caused a real loss and could endanger a family’s livelihood.

Exo 21:33-36 If a man opens or digs a pit and fails to cover it,…
Exo 22:10-13 If a man gives a donkey, an ox, a sheep, or any other animal…
Exo 22:14-15 If a man borrows an animal from his neighbor…

must make restitution—

The offender was required to replace the animal or provide its full value. God’s law held people accountable for damage they caused and sought to restore the injured party rather than leave the loss unresolved.

Exo 22:1-4 If a man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters or sells it…
Lev 6:4-5 once he has sinned and becomes guilty, he must return…
Num 5:6-7 Tell the Israelites that when a man or woman acts…

life for life.

The compensation was to match the loss: an animal’s life required another animal or its equivalent. The requirement established proportional justice and protected both property and community order.

Deu 19:21 You must show no pity: life for life, eye for eye…
Exo 21:23-25 But if a serious injury results, then you require a life…
Gen 9:5-6 And surely I will require the life of any man or beast…

If anyone injures his neighbor,

This law addresses bodily harm within Israel’s covenant community and restrains private vengeance.

Exo 21:18-19 If men are quarreling and one strikes the other…
Deu 27:24 Cursed is he who strikes down his neighbor in secret…
Pro 3:29 Do not devise evil against your neighbor,…

whatever he has done

The offender’s penalty was to correspond to the injury inflicted, holding him accountable while preventing excessive retaliation.

Oba 1:15 For the Day of the LORD is near for all the nations.…
Psa 62:12 and loving devotion to You, O Lord.…
Rom 2:6 God “will repay each one according to his deeds.”

must be done to him:

Justice was to be administered impartially, restoring order and protecting the community from escalating violence.

Exo 21:23-25 But if a serious injury results, then you require a life…
Deu 19:19-21 you must do to him as he intended to do…
Mat 7:2 For with the same judgment you pronounce,…

fracture for fracture,

“Fracture for fracture” establishes measured penalties for bodily injury, preventing both leniency toward wrongdoing and excessive retaliation.

Exo 21:23-25 But if a serious injury results, then you require a life…
Rom 12:19 Do not avenge yourselves, beloved; leave room…

eye for eye,

“Eye for eye” requires that punishment remain proportionate to the harm done and be administered through lawful authority rather than private vengeance.

Deu 19:21 You must show no pity: life for life, eye for eye…
Mat 5:38-39 You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye…’…

tooth for tooth.

Such limits restrained feuds that could spread through families and communities.

Exo 21:24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
Luk 6:29-30 If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him…

Just as he injured the other person,

The phrase “just as he injured the other person” emphasizes that the offender bore responsibility for the harm he caused.

Oba 1:15 For the Day of the LORD is near for all the nations.…
Gal 6:7-8 Do not be deceived: God is not to be mocked.…

the same must be inflicted on him.

Justice required an equivalent penalty, upholding the value of every person and preserving order among God’s people.

Deu 19:19 you must do to him as he intended to do…
Rom 2:6 God “will repay each one according to his deeds.”

Whoever kills an animal must make restitution,

Animals were vital to Israel’s household economy, supplying food, wool, transportation, and labor. A person who unlawfully destroyed another’s animal was required to compensate the owner, preserving justice and recognizing the loss suffered.

Exo 21:35-36 If a man’s ox injures his neighbor’s ox and it dies,…
Exo 22:1 If a man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters or sells it…
Exo 21:33-34 If a man opens or digs a pit and fails to cover it,…

but whoever kills a man must be put to death.

Human life bears a unique sanctity because mankind was created in God’s image. Murder was not treated as a private wrong or merely a financial loss, but as a capital offense requiring judgment. The law upheld the value of innocent life and restrained violence within the covenant community.

Exo 21:12 Whoever strikes and kills a man must surely be put to death.
Num 35:16-21 If, however, anyone strikes a person with an iron object…
Gen 9:6 Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man his blood…

You are to have the same standard of law

Israel’s courts were to administer God’s law without favoritism based on birth, status, or wealth. Justice was not to vary according to social standing.

Exo 12:49 The same law shall apply to both the native…
Num 15:15-16 The assembly is to have the same statute both for you…
Deu 1:17 Show no partiality in judging; hear both small and great…

for the foreign resident and the native;

Foreigners living among Israel were entitled to the same legal protection and held to the same legal accountability as native-born Israelites. Having known oppression in Egypt, Israel was not to exploit those living within its borders.

Lev 19:34 You must treat the foreigner living among you as native-born…
Num 15:29 You shall have the same law for the one who acts in error,…
Deu 10:19 So you also must love the foreigner, since you yourselves…

for I am the LORD your God.’”

The command rests on the Lord’s covenant authority. His holiness and justice governed the life of the whole community.

Lev 18:2 Speak to the Israelites and tell them: I am the LORD…
Exo 20:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Lev 25:17 Do not take advantage of each other, but fear your God;…

Then Moses spoke to the Israelites,

Moses delivered the Lord’s judgment to the whole congregation as God’s appointed leader and mediator.

Deu 31:1 When Moses had finished speaking these words to all Israel,
Deu 1:1 These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel…
Exo 35:1 Then Moses assembled the whole congregation of Israel…

and they took the blasphemer outside the camp

The offender was removed from the camp, where the Lord dwelt among His people, before the sentence was carried out.

Num 15:35-36 And the LORD said to Moses, “The man must surely be put…
Num 5:3 You must send away male and female alike; send them outside…
Lev 13:46 As long as he has the infection, he remains unclean.…

and stoned him.

The community executed the prescribed penalty for blasphemy, treating the offense as a direct rebellion against God’s holy name.

1Ki 21:13 And the two scoundrels came in and sat opposite Naboth,…
Jos 7:25 “Why have you brought this trouble upon us?” said Joshua.…
Deu 17:5 you must bring out to your gates the man or woman…

So the Israelites did as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Israel obeyed the command exactly, carrying out the judgment God had given through Moses.

Num 2:34 So the Israelites did everything the LORD commanded Moses;…
Num 1:54 Thus the Israelites did everything just as the LORD…
Exo 12:28 And the Israelites went and did just what the LORD commanded…
