As he was walking along, he observed a man who had been blind from birth.
His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that caused him to be born blind?"2καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ λέγοντες Ῥαββί τίς ἥμαρτεν οὗτος οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ ἵνα τυφλὸς γεννηθῇ
Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned. This happened so that God's work might be revealed in him. 3Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Οὔτε οὗτος ἥμαρτεν οὔτε οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ ἀλλ’ ἵνα φανερωθῇ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ
I must do the work of the one who sent me while it is day. Night is approaching, when no one can work.
As long as I'm in the world, I'm the light of the world." 5ὅταν ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ φῶς εἰμι τοῦ κόσμου
After saying this, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he spread the mud on the man's eyes
and told him, "Go and wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated "Sent One"). So he went off, washed, and came back seeing.7καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ὕπαγε νίψαι εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν τοῦ Σιλωάμ ἑρμηνεύεται Ἀπεσταλμένος ἀπῆλθεν οὖν καὶ ἐνίψατο καὶ ἦλθεν βλέπων
Then the neighbors and those who had previously seen him as a beggar said, "This is the man who used to sit and beg, isn't it?"8Οἱ οὖν γείτονες καὶ οἱ θεωροῦντες αὐτὸν τὸ πρότερον ὅτι προσαίτης ἦν ἔλεγον Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν καθήμενος καὶ προσαιτῶν
Some were saying, "It's him," while others were saying, "No, but it's someone like him." But he himself kept saying, "It's me!"9Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον ὅτι Οὗτός ἐστιν ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Οὐχί ἀλλὰ ὅμοιος αὐτῷ ἐστιν Ἐκεῖνος ἔλεγεν ὅτι Ἐγώ εἰμι
So they asked him, "How, then, did you gain your eyesight?"10Ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ Πῶς οὖν ἠνεῴχθησάν σου οἱ ὀφθαλμοί
He said, "The man named Jesus made some mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me, 'Go to Siloam and wash.' So off I went and washed, and I received my sight."11Ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος ἄνθρωπος λεγόμενος Ἰησοῦς πηλὸν ἐποίησεν καὶ ἐπέχρισέν μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς καὶ εἶπέν μοι ὅτι Ὕπαγε εἰς τὸν Σιλωὰμ καὶ νίψαι ἀπελθὼν οὖν καὶ νιψάμενος ἀνέβλεψα
They asked him, "Where is that man?" He said, "I don't know!"12Καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ποῦ ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος Λέγει Οὐκ οἶδα
So they brought to the Pharisees the man who had once been blind.
Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and healed his eyes.
So the Pharisees also began to ask him how he had gained his sight. He told them, "He put mud on my eyes, then I washed, and now I can see."15πάλιν οὖν ἠρώτων αὐτὸν καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι πῶς ἀνέβλεψεν δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πηλὸν ἐπέθηκέν μου ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς καὶ ἐνιψάμην καὶ βλέπω
Some of the Pharisees began to remark, "This man is not from God because he does not keep the Sabbath." But others were saying, "How can a sinful man perform such signs?" And there was a division among them.16Ἔλεγον οὖν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων τινές Οὐκ ἔστιν οὗτος παρὰ Θεοῦ ἄνθρωπος ὅτι τὸ σάββατον οὐ τηρεῖ Ἄλλοι [δὲ] ἔλεγον Πῶς δύναται ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλὸς τοιαῦτα σημεῖα ποιεῖν Καὶ σχίσμα ἦν ἐν αὐτοῖς
So they asked the formerly blind man again, "What do you say about him, since it was your eyes he healed?" He said, "He is a prophet."17λέγουσιν οὖν τῷ τυφλῷ πάλιν Τί σὺ λέγεις περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἠνέῳξέν σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς δὲ εἶπεν ὅτι Προφήτης ἐστίν
The Jewish leaders did not believe that the man had been blind and had gained sight until they summoned his parents18Οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἦν τυφλὸς καὶ ἀνέβλεψεν ἕως ὅτου ἐφώνησαν τοὺς γονεῖς αὐτοῦ τοῦ ἀναβλέψαντος
and asked them, "Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? How does he now see?"19καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτοὺς λέγοντες Οὗτός ἐστιν υἱὸς ὑμῶν ὃν ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι τυφλὸς ἐγεννήθη πῶς οὖν βλέπει ἄρτι
His parents replied, "We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. 20Ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπαν Οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν υἱὸς ἡμῶν καὶ ὅτι τυφλὸς ἐγεννήθη
But we don't know how it is that he now sees, and we don't know who opened his eyes. Ask him. He is of age and can speak for himself." 21πῶς δὲ νῦν βλέπει οὐκ οἴδαμεν τίς ἤνοιξεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἡμεῖς οὐκ οἴδαμεν αὐτὸν ἐρωτήσατε ἡλικίαν ἔχει αὐτὸς περὶ ἑαυτοῦ λαλήσει
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, since the Jewish leaders had already agreed that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be thrown out of the synagogue.
That's why his parents said, "He is of age. Ask him."23διὰ τοῦτο οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ εἶπαν ὅτι Ἡλικίαν ἔχει αὐτὸν ἐπερωτήσατε
The Jewish leaders summoned the man who had been blind a second time and told him, "Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner."24Ἐφώνησαν οὖν τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐκ δευτέρου ὃς ἦν τυφλὸς καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Δὸς δόξαν τῷ Θεῷ ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτος ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλός ἐστιν
But he responded, "I don't know whether he is a sinner or not. The one thing I do know is that I used to be blind and now I can see!"25Ἀπεκρίθη οὖν ἐκεῖνος Εἰ ἁμαρτωλός ἐστιν οὐκ οἶδα ἓν οἶδα ὅτι τυφλὸς ὢν ἄρτι βλέπω
Then they asked him, "What did he do to you? How did he heal your eyes?"26Εἶπον* οὖν αὐτῷ Τί ἐποίησέν σοι πῶς ἤνοιξέν σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς
He answered them, "I've already told you, but you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don't want to become his disciples, too, do you?"27Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς Εἶπον ὑμῖν ἤδη καὶ οὐκ ἠκούσατε τί πάλιν θέλετε ἀκούειν μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς θέλετε αὐτοῦ μαθηταὶ γενέσθαι
At this, they turned on him in fury and said, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses! 28Καὶ ἐλοιδόρησαν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπον* Σὺ μαθητὴς εἶ ἐκείνου ἡμεῖς δὲ τοῦ Μωϋσέως ἐσμὲν μαθηταί
We know that God has spoken to Moses, but we do not know where this fellow comes from."29ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι Μωϋσεῖ λελάληκεν Θεός τοῦτον δὲ οὐκ οἴδαμεν πόθεν ἐστίν
The man answered them, "This is an amazing thing! You don't know where he comes from, yet he healed my eyes. 30Ἀπεκρίθη ἄνθρωπος καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἐν τούτῳ γὰρ τὸ θαυμαστόν ἐστιν ὅτι ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε πόθεν ἐστίν καὶ ἤνοιξέν μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς
We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but he does listen to anyone who worships him and does his will.
Ever since creation it has never been heard that anyone healed the eyes of a man who was born blind.
If this man were not from God, he couldn't do anything like that."33εἰ μὴ ἦν οὗτος παρὰ Θεοῦ οὐκ ἠδύνατο ποιεῖν οὐδέν
They asked him, "You were born a sinner and you are trying to instruct us?" And they threw him out.34Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ἐν ἁμαρτίαις σὺ ἐγεννήθης ὅλος καὶ σὺ διδάσκεις ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω
Jesus heard that they had thrown him out. So when he found him, he asked him, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" 35Ἤκουσεν Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω καὶ εὑρὼν αὐτὸν εἶπεν Σὺ πιστεύεις εἰς τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
He answered, "And who is he, sir? Tell me, so that I may believe in him."36Ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπεν Καὶ τίς ἐστιν Κύριε ἵνα πιστεύσω εἰς αὐτόν
Jesus told him, "You have seen him. He is the person who is talking with you."37Εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Καὶ ἑώρακας αὐτὸν καὶ λαλῶν μετὰ σοῦ ἐκεῖνός ἐστιν
He said, "Lord, I do believe," and worshipped him.38 δὲ ἔφη Πιστεύω Κύριε καὶ προσεκύνησεν αὐτῷ
Then Jesus said, "I have come into this world to judge it, so that those who are blind may see and so that those who see may become blind."39Καὶ εἶπεν Ἰησοῦς Εἰς κρίμα ἐγὼ εἰς τὸν κόσμον τοῦτον ἦλθον ἵνα οἱ μὴ βλέποντες βλέπωσιν καὶ οἱ βλέποντες τυφλοὶ γένωνται
Some of the Pharisees who were near him overheard this and asked him, "We aren't blind, too, are we?"40ἤκουσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων ταῦτα οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ὄντες καὶ εἶπον* αὐτῷ Μὴ καὶ ἡμεῖς τυφλοί ἐσμεν
Jesus told them, "If you were blind, you would not have any sin. But now that you insist, 'We see,' your sin still exists."41Εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Εἰ τυφλοὶ ἦτε οὐκ ἂν εἴχετε ἁμαρτίαν νῦν δὲ λέγετε ὅτι Βλέπομεν ἁμαρτία ὑμῶν μένει
