As he was walking along, he observed a man who had been blind from birth. 1And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that caused him to be born blind?"2And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned. This happened so that God's work might be revealed in him. 3Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
I must do the work of the one who sent me while it is day. Night is approaching, when no one can work. 4I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
As long as I'm in the world, I'm the light of the world." 5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
After saying this, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he spread the mud on the man's eyes 6When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
and told him, "Go and wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated "Sent One"). So he went off, washed, and came back seeing.7And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.
Then the neighbors and those who had previously seen him as a beggar said, "This is the man who used to sit and beg, isn't it?"8The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?
Some were saying, "It's him," while others were saying, "No, but it's someone like him." But he himself kept saying, "It's me!"9Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.
So they asked him, "How, then, did you gain your eyesight?"10Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?
He said, "The man named Jesus made some mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me, 'Go to Siloam and wash.' So off I went and washed, and I received my sight."11He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.
They asked him, "Where is that man?" He said, "I don't know!"12Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.
So they brought to the Pharisees the man who had once been blind. 13They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.
Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and healed his eyes. 14And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.
So the Pharisees also began to ask him how he had gained his sight. He told them, "He put mud on my eyes, then I washed, and now I can see."15Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.
Some of the Pharisees began to remark, "This man is not from God because he does not keep the Sabbath." But others were saying, "How can a sinful man perform such signs?" And there was a division among them.16Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.
So they asked the formerly blind man again, "What do you say about him, since it was your eyes he healed?" He said, "He is a prophet."17They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.
The Jewish leaders did not believe that the man had been blind and had gained sight until they summoned his parents18But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.
and asked them, "Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? How does he now see?"19And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?
His parents replied, "We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. 20His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:
But we don't know how it is that he now sees, and we don't know who opened his eyes. Ask him. He is of age and can speak for himself." 21But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, since the Jewish leaders had already agreed that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be thrown out of the synagogue. 22These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.
That's why his parents said, "He is of age. Ask him."23Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.
The Jewish leaders summoned the man who had been blind a second time and told him, "Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner."24Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.
But he responded, "I don't know whether he is a sinner or not. The one thing I do know is that I used to be blind and now I can see!"25He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
Then they asked him, "What did he do to you? How did he heal your eyes?"26Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?
He answered them, "I've already told you, but you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don't want to become his disciples, too, do you?"27He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?
At this, they turned on him in fury and said, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses! 28Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples.
We know that God has spoken to Moses, but we do not know where this fellow comes from."29We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.
The man answered them, "This is an amazing thing! You don't know where he comes from, yet he healed my eyes. 30The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.
We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but he does listen to anyone who worships him and does his will. 31Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
Ever since creation it has never been heard that anyone healed the eyes of a man who was born blind. 32Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.
If this man were not from God, he couldn't do anything like that."33If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.
They asked him, "You were born a sinner and you are trying to instruct us?" And they threw him out.34They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.
Jesus heard that they had thrown him out. So when he found him, he asked him, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" 35Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
He answered, "And who is he, sir? Tell me, so that I may believe in him."36He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?
Jesus told him, "You have seen him. He is the person who is talking with you."37And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.
He said, "Lord, I do believe," and worshipped him.38And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.
Then Jesus said, "I have come into this world to judge it, so that those who are blind may see and so that those who see may become blind."39And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
Some of the Pharisees who were near him overheard this and asked him, "We aren't blind, too, are we?"40And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
Jesus told them, "If you were blind, you would not have any sin. But now that you insist, 'We see,' your sin still exists."41Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
