1"Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, the person who doesn't enter the sheepfold through the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a bandit.

1Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὁ μὴ εἰσερχόμενος διὰ τῆς θύρας εἰς τὴν αὐλὴν τῶν προβάτων ἀλλὰ ἀναβαίνων ἀλλαχόθεν ἐκεῖνος κλέπτης ἐστὶν καὶ λῃστής

2The one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.

2ὁ δὲ εἰσερχόμενος διὰ τῆς θύρας ποιμήν ἐστιν τῶν προβάτων

3It's to him the gatekeeper opens the gate, and it's his voice the sheep hear. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

3τούτῳ ὁ θυρωρὸς ἀνοίγει καὶ τὰ πρόβατα τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ ἀκούει καὶ τὰ ἴδια πρόβατα φωνεῖ κατ’ ὄνομα καὶ ἐξάγει αὐτά

4When he has driven out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they recognize his voice.

4Ὅταν τὰ ἴδια πάντα ἐκβάλῃ ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν πορεύεται καὶ τὰ πρόβατα αὐτῷ ἀκολουθεῖ ὅτι οἴδασιν τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ

5They'll never follow a stranger, but will run away from him because they don't recognize the voice of strangers."

5ἀλλοτρίῳ δὲ οὐ μὴ ἀκολουθήσουσιν ἀλλὰ φεύξονται ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ ὅτι οὐκ οἴδασιν τῶν ἀλλοτρίων τὴν φωνήν

6Jesus used this illustration with them, but they didn't understand what he was saying to them.

6Ταύτην τὴν παροιμίαν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐκεῖνοι δὲ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τίνα ἦν ἃ ἐλάλει αὐτοῖς

7So again Jesus said, "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, I'm the gate for the sheep.

7Εἶπεν οὖν πάλιν ‹αὐτοῖς› ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ θύρα τῶν προβάτων

8All who came before me are thieves and bandits, but the sheep didn't listen to them.

8πάντες ὅσοι ἦλθον πρὸ ἐμοῦ κλέπται εἰσὶν καὶ λῃσταί ἀλλ’ οὐκ ἤκουσαν αὐτῶν τὰ πρόβατα

9I'm the gate. If anyone enters through me, he will be saved. He'll come in and go out and find pasture.

9ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ θύρα δι’ ἐμοῦ ἐάν τις εἰσέλθῃ σωθήσεται καὶ εἰσελεύσεται καὶ ἐξελεύσεται καὶ νομὴν εὑρήσει

10The thief comes only to steal, slaughter, and destroy. I've come that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

10ὁ κλέπτης οὐκ ἔρχεται εἰ μὴ ἵνα κλέψῃ καὶ θύσῃ καὶ ἀπολέσῃ ἐγὼ ἦλθον ἵνα ζωὴν ἔχωσιν καὶ περισσὸν ἔχωσιν

11"I'm the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

11Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ποιμὴν ὁ καλός ὁ ποιμὴν ὁ καλὸς τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ τίθησιν ὑπὲρ τῶν προβάτων

12The hired worker, who isn't the shepherd and doesn't own the sheep, sees the wolf coming, deserts the sheep, and runs away. So the wolf snatches them and scatters them,

12ὁ μισθωτὸς καὶ οὐκ ὢν ποιμήν οὗ οὐκ ἔστιν τὰ πρόβατα ἴδια θεωρεῖ τὸν λύκον ἐρχόμενον καὶ ἀφίησιν τὰ πρόβατα καὶ φεύγει καὶ ὁ λύκος ἁρπάζει αὐτὰ καὶ σκορπίζει

13because he's a hired worker, and the sheep don't matter to him.

13ὅτι μισθωτός ἐστιν καὶ οὐ μέλει αὐτῷ περὶ τῶν προβάτων

14I'm the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me,

14Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ποιμὴν ὁ καλός καὶ γινώσκω τὰ ἐμὰ καὶ γινώσκουσί με τὰ ἐμά

15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep.

15καθὼς γινώσκει με ὁ Πατὴρ κἀγὼ γινώσκω τὸν Πατέρα καὶ τὴν ψυχήν μου τίθημι ὑπὲρ τῶν προβάτων

16I have other sheep that don't belong to this fold. I must lead these also, and they'll listen to my voice. So there will be one flock and one shepherd.

16καὶ ἄλλα πρόβατα ἔχω ἃ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τῆς αὐλῆς ταύτης κἀκεῖνα δεῖ με ἀγαγεῖν καὶ τῆς φωνῆς μου ἀκούσουσιν καὶ γενήσονται* μία ποίμνη εἷς ποιμήν

17This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it back again.

17Διὰ τοῦτό με ὁ Πατὴρ ἀγαπᾷ ὅτι ἐγὼ τίθημι τὴν ψυχήν μου ἵνα πάλιν λάβω αὐτήν

18No one is taking it from me; I lay it down of my own free will. I have the authority to lay it down, and I have the authority to take it back again. This is what my Father has commanded me."

18οὐδεὶς αἴρει* αὐτὴν ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ ἀλλ’ ἐγὼ τίθημι αὐτὴν ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ ἐξουσίαν ἔχω θεῖναι αὐτήν καὶ ἐξουσίαν ἔχω πάλιν λαβεῖν αὐτήν ταύτην τὴν ἐντολὴν ἔλαβον παρὰ τοῦ Πατρός μου

19Once again there was a division among the Jews because of what Jesus had been saying.

19Σχίσμα πάλιν ἐγένετο ἐν τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις διὰ τοὺς λόγους τούτους

20Many of them were saying, "He has a demon and is insane. Why bother listening to him?"

20ἔλεγον δὲ πολλοὶ ἐξ αὐτῶν Δαιμόνιον ἔχει καὶ μαίνεται τί αὐτοῦ ἀκούετε

21Others were saying, "These are not the words of a man who is demon-possessed. A demon cannot open the eyes of the blind, can it?"

21Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Ταῦτα τὰ ῥήματα οὐκ ἔστιν δαιμονιζομένου μὴ δαιμόνιον δύναται τυφλῶν ὀφθαλμοὺς ἀνοῖξαι

22Now Hanukkah was taking place in Jerusalem. It was winter,

22Ἐγένετο τότε τὰ ἐνκαίνια ἐν τοῖς Ἱεροσολύμοις χειμὼν ἦν

23and Jesus was walking around in the Temple inside the open porch of Solomon.

23καὶ περιεπάτει ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἐν τῇ στοᾷ τοῦ Σολομῶνος

24So the Jewish leaders surrounded him and quizzed him, "How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you're the Messiah, tell us so plainly."

24ἐκύκλωσαν οὖν αὐτὸν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ ἔλεγον αὐτῷ Ἕως πότε τὴν ψυχὴν ἡμῶν αἴρεις εἰ σὺ εἶ ὁ Χριστός εἰπὲ* ἡμῖν παρρησίᾳ

25Jesus answered them, "I have told you, but you don't believe it. The actions that I do in my Father's name testify on my behalf,

25Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Εἶπον ὑμῖν καὶ οὐ πιστεύετε τὰ ἔργα ἃ ἐγὼ ποιῶ ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Πατρός μου ταῦτα μαρτυρεῖ περὶ ἐμοῦ

26but you don't believe, because you don't belong to my sheep.

26ἀλλὰ ὑμεῖς οὐ πιστεύετε ὅτι οὐκ ἐστὲ ἐκ τῶν προβάτων τῶν ἐμῶν

27My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me.

27τὰ πρόβατα τὰ ἐμὰ τῆς φωνῆς μου ἀκούουσιν κἀγὼ γινώσκω αὐτά καὶ ἀκολουθοῦσίν μοι

28I give them eternal life, they'll never be lost, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

28κἀγὼ δίδωμι αὐτοῖς ζωὴν αἰώνιον καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀπόλωνται εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα καὶ οὐχ ἁρπάσει τις αὐτὰ ἐκ τῆς χειρός μου

29What my Father has given me is more important than anything, and no one can snatch it from the Father's hand.

29ὁ Πατήρ μου ὃ δέδωκέν μοι πάντων μεῖζόν ἐστιν καὶ οὐδεὶς δύναται ἁρπάζειν ἐκ τῆς χειρὸς τοῦ Πατρός

30I and the Father are one."

30ἐγὼ καὶ ὁ Πατὴρ ἕν ἐσμεν

31Again the Jewish leaders picked up stones to stone him to death.

31Ἐβάστασαν ‹οὖν› πάλιν λίθους οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἵνα λιθάσωσιν αὐτόν

32Jesus replied to them, "I've shown you many good actions from my Father. For which of them are you going to stone me?"

32ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Πολλὰ ἔργα «ἔδειξα ὑμῖν» καλὰ ἐκ τοῦ Πατρός διὰ ποῖον αὐτῶν ἔργον ἐμὲ λιθάζετε

33The Jewish leaders answered him, "We are not going to stone you for a good action, but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, are making yourself God!"

33Ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι Περὶ καλοῦ ἔργου οὐ λιθάζομέν σε ἀλλὰ περὶ βλασφημίας καὶ ὅτι σὺ ἄνθρωπος ὢν ποιεῖς σεαυτὸν Θεόν

34Jesus replied to them, "Is it not written in your Law, 'I said, "You are gods"'?

34Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Οὐκ ἔστιν γεγραμμένον ἐν τῷ νόμῳ ὑμῶν ὅτι Ἐγὼ εἶπα Θεοί ἐστε

35If he called those to whom a message from God came 'gods' (and the Scripture cannot be disregarded),

35εἰ ἐκείνους εἶπεν θεοὺς πρὸς οὓς ὁ λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐγένετο καὶ οὐ δύναται λυθῆναι ἡ γραφή

36how can you say to the one whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world, 'You're blaspheming,' because I said, 'I'm the Son of God'?

36ὃν ὁ Πατὴρ ἡγίασεν καὶ ἀπέστειλεν εἰς τὸν κόσμον ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι Βλασφημεῖς ὅτι εἶπον Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰμι

37If I'm not doing my Father's actions, don't believe me.

37Εἰ οὐ ποιῶ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Πατρός μου μὴ πιστεύετέ μοι

38But if I'm doing them, even though you don't believe me, believe the actions, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father."

38εἰ δὲ ποιῶ κἂν ἐμοὶ μὴ πιστεύητε τοῖς ἔργοις πιστεύετε ἵνα γνῶτε καὶ γινώσκητε ὅτι ἐν ἐμοὶ ὁ Πατὴρ κἀγὼ ἐν τῷ Πατρί

39Again they tried to seize him, but he slipped away from them.

39Ἐζήτουν οὖν αὐτὸν πάλιν πιάσαι καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἐκ τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῶν

40Then he went away again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing at first, and he remained there.

40Καὶ ἀπῆλθεν πάλιν πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου εἰς τὸν τόπον ὅπου ἦν Ἰωάννης τὸ πρῶτον βαπτίζων καὶ ἔμεινεν* ἐκεῖ

41Many people came to him and kept saying, "John never performed a sign, but everything that John said about this man is true!"

41καὶ πολλοὶ ἦλθον πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἰωάννης μὲν σημεῖον ἐποίησεν οὐδέν πάντα δὲ ὅσα εἶπεν Ἰωάννης περὶ τούτου ἀληθῆ ἦν

42And many believed in Jesus there.

42καὶ πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ
