Now all the tax collectors and sinners were gathering around to listen to Jesus.1Ἦσαν δὲ αὐτῷ ἐγγίζοντες πάντες οἱ τελῶναι καὶ οἱ ἁμαρτωλοὶ ἀκούειν αὐτοῦ
So the Pharisees and scribes began to grumble: “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”2καὶ διεγόγγυζον οἵ τε Φαρισαῖοι καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς λέγοντες ὅτι Οὗτος ἁμαρτωλοὺς προσδέχεται καὶ συνεσθίει αὐτοῖς
Then Jesus told them this parable:3Εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτοὺς τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην λέγων
“What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the pasture and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it?4Τίς ἄνθρωπος ἐξ ὑμῶν ἔχων ἑκατὸν πρόβατα καὶ ἀπολέσας ἐξ αὐτῶν ἓν οὐ καταλείπει τὰ ἐνενήκοντα ἐννέα ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ καὶ πορεύεται ἐπὶ τὸ ἀπολωλὸς ἕως εὕρῃ αὐτό
And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders,5καὶ εὑρὼν ἐπιτίθησιν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὤμους αὐτοῦ χαίρων
comes home, and calls together his friends and neighbors to tell them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost sheep!’6καὶ ἐλθὼν εἰς τὸν οἶκον συνκαλεῖ τοὺς φίλους καὶ τοὺς γείτονας λέγων αὐτοῖς Συνχάρητέ μοι ὅτι εὗρον τὸ πρόβατόν μου τὸ ἀπολωλός
In the same way, I tell you that there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous ones who do not need to repent.7λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὕτως χαρὰ ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ ἔσται ἐπὶ ἑνὶ ἁμαρτωλῷ μετανοοῦντι ἐπὶ ἐνενήκοντα ἐννέα δικαίοις οἵτινες οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν μετανοίας
Or what woman who has ten silver coins and loses one of them does not light a lamp, sweep her house, and search carefully until she finds it?8 τίς γυνὴ δραχμὰς ἔχουσα δέκα ἐὰν ἀπολέσῃ δραχμὴν μίαν οὐχὶ ἅπτει λύχνον καὶ σαροῖ τὴν οἰκίαν καὶ ζητεῖ ἐπιμελῶς ἕως οὗ εὕρῃ
And when she finds it, she calls together her friends and neighbors to say, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost coin.’9καὶ εὑροῦσα συνκαλεῖ τὰς φίλας καὶ γείτονας λέγουσα Συνχάρητέ μοι ὅτι εὗρον τὴν δραχμὴν ἣν ἀπώλεσα
In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels over one sinner who repents.”10οὕτως λέγω ὑμῖν γίνεται χαρὰ ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀγγέλων τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐπὶ ἑνὶ ἁμαρτωλῷ μετανοοῦντι
Then Jesus said, “There was a man who had two sons.11Εἶπεν δέ Ἄνθρωπός τις εἶχεν δύο υἱούς
The younger son said to him, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.12καὶ εἶπεν νεώτερος αὐτῶν τῷ πατρί Πάτερ δός μοι τὸ ἐπιβάλλον μέρος τῆς οὐσίας δὲ διεῖλεν αὐτοῖς τὸν βίον
After a few days, the younger son got everything together and journeyed to a distant country, where he squandered his wealth in wild living.13Καὶ μετ’ οὐ πολλὰς ἡμέρας συναγαγὼν πάντα νεώτερος υἱὸς ἀπεδήμησεν εἰς χώραν μακράν καὶ ἐκεῖ διεσκόρπισεν τὴν οὐσίαν αὐτοῦ ζῶν ἀσώτως
After he had spent all he had, a severe famine swept through that country, and he began to be in need.14Δαπανήσαντος δὲ αὐτοῦ πάντα ἐγένετο λιμὸς ἰσχυρὰ κατὰ τὴν χώραν ἐκείνην καὶ αὐτὸς ἤρξατο ὑστερεῖσθαι
So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed the pigs.15καὶ πορευθεὶς ἐκολλήθη ἑνὶ τῶν πολιτῶν τῆς χώρας ἐκείνης καὶ ἔπεμψεν αὐτὸν εἰς τοὺς ἀγροὺς αὐτοῦ βόσκειν χοίρους
He longed to fill his belly with the pods the pigs were eating, but no one would give him a thing.16καὶ ἐπεθύμει γεμίσαι τὴν κοιλίαν αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῶν κερατίων ὧν ἤσθιον οἱ χοῖροι καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐδίδου αὐτῷ
Finally he came to his senses and said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have plenty of food? But here I am, starving to death!17Εἰς ἑαυτὸν δὲ ἐλθὼν ἔφη Πόσοι μίσθιοι τοῦ πατρός μου περισσεύονται ἄρτων ἐγὼ δὲ λιμῷ ὧδε ἀπόλλυμαι
I will get up and go back to my father and say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.18ἀναστὰς πορεύσομαι πρὸς τὸν πατέρα μου καὶ ἐρῶ αὐτῷ Πάτερ ἥμαρτον εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ ἐνώπιόν σου
I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.” ’19οὐκέτι εἰμὶ ἄξιος κληθῆναι υἱός σου ποίησόν με ὡς ἕνα τῶν μισθίων σου
So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.20Καὶ ἀναστὰς ἦλθεν πρὸς τὸν πατέρα ἑαυτοῦ ἔτι δὲ αὐτοῦ μακρὰν ἀπέχοντος εἶδεν αὐτὸν πατὴρ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐσπλαγχνίσθη καὶ δραμὼν ἐπέπεσεν ἐπὶ τὸν τράχηλον αὐτοῦ καὶ κατεφίλησεν αὐτόν
The son declared, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’21Εἶπεν δὲ υἱὸς αὐτῷ Πάτερ ἥμαρτον εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ ἐνώπιόν σου οὐκέτι εἰμὶ ἄξιος κληθῆναι υἱός σου (ποίησόν με ὡς ἕνα τῶν μισθίων σου)
But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.22Εἶπεν δὲ πατὴρ πρὸς τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ Ταχὺ ἐξενέγκατε στολὴν τὴν πρώτην καὶ ἐνδύσατε αὐτόν καὶ δότε δακτύλιον εἰς τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ καὶ ὑποδήματα εἰς τοὺς πόδας
Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let us feast and celebrate.23καὶ φέρετε τὸν μόσχον τὸν σιτευτόν θύσατε καὶ φαγόντες εὐφρανθῶμεν
For this son of mine was dead and is alive again! He was lost and is found!’ So they began to celebrate.24ὅτι οὗτος υἱός μου νεκρὸς ἦν καὶ ἀνέζησεν ἦν ἀπολωλὼς καὶ εὑρέθη καὶ ἤρξαντο εὐφραίνεσθαι
Meanwhile the older son was in the field, and as he approached the house, he heard music and dancing.25Ἦν δὲ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ πρεσβύτερος ἐν ἀγρῷ καὶ ὡς ἐρχόμενος ἤγγισεν τῇ οἰκίᾳ ἤκουσεν συμφωνίας καὶ χορῶν
So he called one of the servants and asked what was going on.26καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος ἕνα τῶν παίδων ἐπυνθάνετο τί ἂν εἴη ταῦτα
‘Your brother has returned,’ he said, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has him back safe and sound.’27 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὅτι ἀδελφός σου ἥκει καὶ ἔθυσεν πατήρ σου τὸν μόσχον τὸν σιτευτόν ὅτι ὑγιαίνοντα αὐτὸν ἀπέλαβεν
The older son became angry and refused to go in. So his father came out and pleaded with him.28Ὠργίσθη δὲ καὶ οὐκ ἤθελεν εἰσελθεῖν δὲ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ ἐξελθὼν παρεκάλει αὐτόν
But he answered his father, ‘Look, all these years I have served you and never disobeyed a commandment of yours. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends.29 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν τῷ πατρὶ ‹αὐτοῦ› Ἰδοὺ τοσαῦτα ἔτη δουλεύω σοι καὶ οὐδέποτε ἐντολήν σου παρῆλθον καὶ ἐμοὶ οὐδέποτε ἔδωκας ἔριφον ἵνα μετὰ τῶν φίλων μου εὐφρανθῶ
But when this son of yours returns from squandering your wealth with prostitutes, you kill the fattened calf for him!’30ὅτε δὲ υἱός σου οὗτος καταφαγών σου τὸν βίον μετὰ πορνῶν ἦλθεν ἔθυσας αὐτῷ τὸν σιτευτὸν μόσχον
‘Son, you are always with me,’ the father said, ‘and all that is mine is yours.31 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Τέκνον σὺ πάντοτε μετ’ ἐμοῦ εἶ καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐμὰ σά ἐστιν
But it was fitting to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ ”32εὐφρανθῆναι δὲ καὶ χαρῆναι ἔδει ὅτι ἀδελφός σου οὗτος νεκρὸς ἦν καὶ ἔζησεν καὶ ἀπολωλὼς καὶ εὑρέθη
