Song of Solomon 8
Berean Study Bible

Longing for Her Beloved

O that you were to me like a brother

A brother could receive affectionate greetings in public without raising suspicion or bringing reproach upon his sister. The bride longs for similar freedom to show her love openly.

Heb 2:11 For both the One who sanctifies and those who are sanctified…
Pro 18:24 A man of many companions may come to ruin…

who nursed at my mother’s breasts!

Sharing the same mother would make him her true brother, joined by family ties from birth.

Isa 66:11 so that you may nurse and be satisfied…

If I found you outdoors,

Meeting in a public place would ordinarily limit the expression of affection between lovers.

Gen 33:4 Esau, however, ran to him and embraced him…
Gen 24:63 Early in the evening, Isaac went out to the field…

I would kiss you,

She desires to greet him openly with the affection permitted between close family members.

His embrace conveys both strength and affection. The picture is of the husband holding his bride with devoted, protective love, expressing the mutual delight and faithfulness of their union.

Gen 33:4 Esau, however, ran to him and embraced him…
Gen 29:13 When Laban heard the news about his sister’s son Jacob,…
Luk 15:20 So he got up and went to his father…

O daughters of Jerusalem, I adjure you:

Set me as a seal over your heart, as a seal upon your arm.

its jealousy as unrelenting as Sheol.

Pro 27:4 Wrath is cruel and anger is like a flood,…
Pro 30:15-16 The leech has two daughters: Give and Give.…

Its sparks are fiery flames, the fiercest blaze of all.

Psa 18:16-17 He reached down from on high and took hold of me;…

If a man were to give all the wealth of his house for love,

Love cannot be purchased with land, livestock, silver, or any other possession. Its worth exceeds material wealth because it is given freely and faithfully between those bound to one another.

If she is a wall,

The brothers consider how to protect and honor their younger sister when she reaches marriageable age. If she proves steadfast in chastity and self-control, like a city wall that withstands attack, they will recognize her character with honor and celebration.

Neh 2:17 Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in.…
Mic 7:11 The day for rebuilding your walls will come…
Isa 26:1 In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:…

we will build a tower of silver upon her.

Mic 4:8 And you, O watchtower of the flock, O stronghold,…

If she is a door,

we will enclose her with panels of cedar.

1Ki 6:9 So Solomon built the temple and finished it…

Pro 5:19 A loving doe, a graceful fawn—may her breasts satisfy you always;…
Ezk 16:7 I made you thrive like a plant of the field.…

So I have become in his eyes like one who brings peace.

Because of her purity and constancy, she brings her beloved confidence, security, and contentment. Their union is marked by trust rather than shame or conflict.

Mat 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be…
Pro 16:7 When a man’s ways please the LORD, He makes…
Rom 12:18 If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone.

Solomon had a vineyard in Baal-hamon.

Solomon’s vineyard was a large and valuable estate, fitting the wealth and extensive holdings associated with his reign. Baal-hamon, meaning “lord of multitude” or “owner of abundance,” was likely a place known for fertile land and abundant produce. The vineyard provides a contrast to the beloved’s own vineyard, which she personally keeps.

Ecc 2:4-6 I expanded my pursuits. I built houses…
Isa 5:1-2 I will sing for my beloved a song of his vineyard:…
1Ki 21:1-2 Some time after these events, Naboth the Jezreelite…

He leased it to the tenants.

Solomon entrusted the cultivation of the vineyard to keepers who worked the land under his authority. Such arrangements allowed a landowner to receive income from distant or extensive properties while tenants benefited from the harvest.

Mat 21:33-41 Listen to another parable: There was a landowner…
Mrk 12:1-9 Then Jesus began to speak to them in parables:…
Luk 20:9-16 Then He proceeded to tell the people this parable:…

For its fruit, each was to bring a thousand shekels of silver.

The required payment shows the vineyard’s considerable value and productivity. Solomon’s estate produced revenue, but the beloved later emphasizes that her own vineyard remains under her care and is not treated merely as a source of profit.

Isa 7:23-25 And on that day, in every place that had a thousand vines…
Gen 47:24 At harvest time, you are to give a fifth of it to Pharaoh,…
2Ki 23:35 So Jehoiakim paid the silver and gold to Pharaoh Neco…

But my own vineyard is mine to give;

The bride declares that her vineyard belongs to her and remains under her care. The vineyard represents her person and the love she offers within marriage, not something controlled by Solomon’s wealth or position.

Sng 1:6 Do not stare because I am dark, for the sun…
Sng 4:12-16 My sister, my bride, you are a garden locked up,…
Pro 31:16 She appraises a field and buys it; from her earnings…

the thousand shekels are for you, O Solomon,

Solomon may receive the full income associated with his vineyard, acknowledging his rightful property and royal standing. The bride distinguishes his possessions from her own.

Gen 20:16 And he said to Sarah, “See, I am giving your brother…
1Ki 3:13-14 Moreover, I will give you what you did not request…
1Ki 10:14-15 The weight of gold that came to Solomon each year…

and two hundred are for those who tend its fruit.

Those responsible for cultivating the vineyard receive their proper share. The closing words recognize honest labor and the just reward due to those who faithfully care for what belongs to another.

Mat 20:1-16 For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner…
1Co 9:7 Who serves as a soldier at his own expense?…
1Co 3:8 He who plants and he who waters are one in purpose…

You who dwell in the gardens,

The bride is pictured in a place of beauty, fruitfulness, and fellowship. The gardens fit the song’s recurring imagery of love, abundance, and joyful union.

Sng 6:2 My beloved has gone down to his garden to the beds of spices…
Sng 5:1 I have come to my garden, my sister, my bride;…
Sng 4:16 Awake, O north wind, and come, O south wind.…

my companions are listening for your voice.

The bridegroom’s companions are nearby and attentive, likely awaiting the bride’s response or song. Her voice is valued not only by him but within the wider celebration surrounding their marriage.

Jhn 3:29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom…
Jhn 10:27 My sheep listen to My voice; I know them…
Act 10:33 So I sent for you immediately, and you were kind enough to come.…

Let me hear it!

The bridegroom asks the bride to speak or sing, expressing his delight in her presence and his desire for continued fellowship with her.

Sng 2:14 O my dove in the clefts of the rock, in the crevices…
Psa 85:8 I will listen to what God the LORD will say;…
1Sa 3:10 Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before,…

Come away, my beloved,

The bride calls her beloved to her, closing the song with longing rather than separation. Their love remains marked by mutual desire and faithful delight.

Sng 2:10 My beloved calls to me, “Arise, my darling.…
Sng 2:13 The fig tree ripens its figs; the blossoming vines spread…
Sng 4:8 Come with me from Lebanon, my bride, come with me…

and be like a gazelle or a young stag

The beloved is pictured with the strength, beauty, and swift movement of a wild deer, able to cross the hills without delay to meet his bride.

Sng 2:9 My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag.…
Sng 2:17 Before the day breaks and shadows flee, turn, my beloved,…
Psa 18:33 He makes my feet like those of a deer…

on the mountains of spices.

The setting recalls the garden-like richness and fragrance associated with their love. The song ends with the expectation of joyful reunion and the continued fulfillment of covenant love.

Sng 4:6 Before the day breaks and the shadows flee…
Sng 5:1 I have come to my garden, my sister, my bride;…
Sng 4:14 with nard and saffron, with calamus and cinnamon…
