Psalms 40
Berean Study Bible

I Waited Patiently for the LORD

For the choirmaster.

The psalm was prepared for use in Israel’s public worship under the direction of the temple music leader, joining David’s personal testimony to the faith of the gathered congregation.

Psa 4:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments.…
Psa 5:1 For the choirmaster, to be accompanied by flutes.…
Psa 6:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments,…

A Psalm of David.

David wrote from a life marked by danger, sin, deliverance, and God’s preserving grace. His experience as Israel’s king and as the recipient of God’s covenant promises gives weight to his confidence in the Lord.

Psa 3:1 A Psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom.…
Psa 18:1 For the choirmaster. Of David the servant of the LORD…
Psa 51:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. When Nathan the prophet…

I waited patiently for the LORD;

David endured distress without abandoning hope, trusting God to act according to His purpose and timing.

Psa 27:14 Wait patiently for the LORD; be strong and courageous.…
Lam 3:25 The LORD is good to those who wait for Him,…
Isa 40:31 But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength…

He inclined to me and heard my cry.

The Lord personally attended to David’s prayer and answered him. God is not indifferent to the cries of His people but hears those who depend upon Him.

Psa 116:2 Because He has inclined His ear to me, I will call on Him…
Psa 34:15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous…
Exo 2:24 So God heard their groaning, and He remembered His covenant…

He lifted me up from the pit of despair,

David describes rescue from a place of helplessness and ruin, like a deep cistern or prison pit from which a person could not free himself. God intervened when all human strength had failed.

Psa 30:3 O LORD, You pulled me up from Sheol; You spared…
Jon 2:6 To the roots of the mountains I descended;…
Lam 3:55-58 I called on Your name, O LORD, out of the depths of the Pit.…

out of the miry clay;

The mud adds the picture of sinking, unstable ground where every effort to escape only worsens the danger. David’s distress was real and overwhelming, yet the Lord brought him out.

Psa 69:2 I have sunk into the miry depths, where there is no footing;…
Jer 38:6 So they took Jeremiah and dropped him into the cistern…
Psa 88:6 You have laid me in the lowest Pit, in the darkest…

He set my feet upon a rock,

God replaced danger with safety and instability with a secure place. The rock reflects His faithful protection and the enduring security He provides.

Psa 27:5 For in the day of trouble He will hide me in His shelter;…
Mat 7:24-25 Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine…
Psa 61:2-3 From the ends of the earth I call out to You…

and made my footsteps firm.

Having been rescued, David was established and directed in a steady path. God did not merely remove him from trouble; He gave him strength to stand and walk in obedience.

Psa 37:23-24 The steps of a man are ordered by the LORD…
Pro 4:26-27 Make a level path for your feet, and all your ways…
Psa 121:3 He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector…

He put a new song in my mouth,

God’s deliverance moved David from distress to praise. The song arose from what God had done, marking a renewed response of faith and thanksgiving.

Psa 96:1 Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD…
Psa 98:1 A Psalm. Sing to the LORD a new song, for He has done wonders…
Rev 5:9 And they sang a new song: “Worthy are You”…

a hymn of praise to our God.

David’s praise was directed to the covenant God of Israel, whose saving acts were known among His people. Worship joined personal gratitude to the shared confession of God’s faithfulness.

Psa 71:8 My mouth is filled with Your praise and with Your splendor…
Isa 42:10 Sing to the LORD a new song—His praise…
Heb 13:15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God…

Many will see and fear

David’s rescue would not remain private. Those who observed God’s work would recognize His power and respond with reverent awe.

Psa 52:6 The righteous will see and fear; they will mock the evildoer…
Exo 14:31 When Israel saw the great power that the LORD had exercised…
Deu 13:11 Then all Israel will hear and be afraid,…

and put their trust in the LORD.

God’s deliverance of His servant would lead others to rely on Him rather than on human strength, false security, or earthly powers.

Pro 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not…
Isa 26:4 Trust in the LORD forever, because GOD the LORD is the Rock…
Psa 56:4 In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust.…

Blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust,

God’s favor rests on the one who deliberately depends on Him rather than on personal ability, influence, or security. Such trust recognizes the LORD as faithful and sovereign, as Abraham’s faith demonstrated when he believed God’s promise.

Jer 17:7 But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,…
Pro 16:20 Whoever heeds instruction will find success, …
Psa 84:12 O LORD of Hosts, how blessed is the man who trusts in You!

who has not turned to the proud,

The proud rely on themselves and resist God’s authority. Their confidence in status, wealth, or human wisdom leads others away from humble dependence on the LORD.

Psa 101:5 Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret,…
Pro 21:4 Haughty eyes and a proud heart—the guides of the wicked…
Pro 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit…

nor to those who lapse into falsehood.

Deceitful people abandon truth and often mislead others for their own advantage. Israel’s history included false leaders who promised safety while ignoring God’s warning. The faithful person rejects such counsel and remains committed to truth and integrity.

Psa 101:7 No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house…
Psa 12:2 They lie to one another; they speak with flattering lips…
Pro 12:22 Lying lips are detestable to the LORD…

Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders You have done,

God’s works include creation, His deliverance of Israel from Egypt, His preservation of them in the wilderness, and His continued care for His people. The psalmist addresses Yahweh as “my God,” expressing personal trust in the covenant-keeping God.

Psa 136:4 He alone does great wonders. His loving devotion…
Exo 15:11 Who among the gods is like You, O LORD? Who is like You…
Psa 77:14 You are the God who works wonders; You display Your strength…

and the plans You have for us—

God’s purposes for His people are deliberate and good. His care is not limited to past acts of deliverance; He orders events according to His wise and faithful will.

Jer 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD,…
Psa 33:11 The counsel of the LORD stands forever, …
Pro 19:21 Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the purpose…

none can compare to You—

Israel’s God stands above every false god and every human power. His authority, holiness, and works are unmatched.

Psa 86:8 O Lord, there is none like You among the gods,…
Isa 40:18 To whom will you liken God? To what image…
Isa 46:5 To whom will you liken Me or count Me equal?…

if I proclaim and declare them,

The psalmist desires to make God’s deeds known openly, recounting His faithfulness before others.

1Ch 16:24 Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders…
Psa 96:3 Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders…
Isa 12:4 “Give praise to the LORD; proclaim His name!…

they are more than I can count.

God’s wondrous works and gracious purposes are too numerous for any person to fully recount, leading the psalmist to humble awe.

Job 5:9 The One who does great and unsearchable things,…
Psa 139:17-18 How precious to me are Your thoughts, O God,…
Psa 104:24 How many are Your works, O LORD! In wisdom…

Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,

God had established the sacrificial system for Israel, but sacrifices were never a substitute for obedient faith. Outward worship could not please Him when it was separated from repentance, righteousness, and submission to His will.

Hos 6:6 For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God…
1Sa 15:22 But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in…
Psa 51:16-17 For You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it…

but my ears You have opened.

God had made the psalmist receptive to His command. The image conveys willing obedience, like a servant devoted to his master, and contrasts hearing God’s voice with relying on religious ceremony.

Isa 50:4-5 The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of discipleship,…
Exo 21:5-6 But if the servant declares, ‘I love my master…
Deu 15:16-17 But if your servant says, ‘I do not want to leave you,’…

Burnt offerings and sin offerings You did not require.

Animal sacrifices could not finally remove sin or change the heart. They pointed ahead to the complete sacrifice of Christ, whose obedience and death fulfilled what the offerings foreshadowed, anticipating the New Covenant.

Heb 10:5-9 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, He said:…
Jer 7:21-23 This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…
Amo 5:21-24 “I hate, I despise your feasts! I cannot stand the stench”…

Then I said,

David records his willing response to God after recognizing that obedience is more important than outward sacrifice.

Heb 10:7 Then I said, ‘Here I am, it is written about Me…
Isa 6:8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying…
Exo 3:4 When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look,…

“Here I am,

The words express readiness to carry out the task God has appointed. They also anticipate the perfect obedience of the Messiah.

Gen 22:1 Some time later God tested Abraham and said to him,…
Gen 46:2 And that night God spoke to Israel in a vision:…
1Sa 3:6 Once again the LORD called, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up…

I have come—

The speaker presents himself before God to fulfill the divine will. David’s response finds its fullest fulfillment in Christ, who entered the world to accomplish the Father’s redemptive purpose.

Jhn 18:37 “Then You are a king!” Pilate said. You say that I am a king…
Jhn 6:38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will…
Luk 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

it is written about me

God’s purposes for His chosen servant were already recorded in Scripture. The statement ultimately points to the Messiah, whose coming and mission were foretold in the Old Testament.

Jhn 5:46 If you had believed Moses, you would believe Me…
Luk 24:44 Jesus said to them, “These are the words I spoke to you…
Luk 24:27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets,…

in the scroll:

The scroll refers to the sacred writings preserved among Israel. God’s revealed Word testifies to His plan and is fulfilled in the person and work of Christ.

Rev 5:1 Then I saw a scroll in the right hand of the One…
Ezk 2:9-10 Then I looked and saw a hand reaching out to me,…
Dan 12:4 But you, Daniel, shut up these words and seal the book…

I delight to do Your will, O my God;

David expresses willing obedience flowing from personal devotion to God rather than outward duty alone. His words find their fullest fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who came to accomplish the Father’s will through His obedient life and sacrificial death.

Heb 10:7 Then I said, ‘Here I am, it is written about Me…
Psa 143:10 Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God.…
Jhn 4:34 “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me”…

Your law is within my heart.”

God’s commands had become the governing desire of David’s inner life, shaping his thoughts, motives, and actions. This inward devotion anticipates God’s promise to establish His law in the hearts of His covenant people and is perfectly displayed in Christ, whose obedience was complete.

Psa 37:31 The law of his God is in his heart; his steps do not falter.
Jer 31:33 “But this is the covenant I will make”…
Deu 6:6 These words I am commanding you today are to be…

I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly;

David publicly testified to the righteousness of God before the gathered worshippers of Israel, likely in the setting of temple worship at Jerusalem. His praise was not private or restrained; he declared God’s faithful justice before the covenant community. His words also anticipate Christ, who openly revealed the Father’s truth among the people.

Psa 71:15 My mouth will declare Your righteousness and Your salvation…
Psa 35:18 Then I will give You thanks in the great assembly;…
Heb 2:12 He says: “I will proclaim Your name to My brothers; ……

behold, I do not seal my lips,

David refused to withhold what God had done or remain silent about His character. His public confession showed that genuine worship included declaring God’s righteousness before others, not merely offering inward devotion.

Amo 3:8 The lion has roared—who will not fear?…
Jer 20:9 “I will not mention Him or speak any more in His name…”…
Act 4:20 For we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen…

as You, O LORD, do know.

The Lord Himself knew David’s heart, his words, and his faithfulness in making God’s righteousness known. David appealed to God as the perfect witness of his sincerity.

Psa 139:1-4 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. O LORD,…
Jhn 21:17 Jesus asked a third time, “Simon son of John…”…
Heb 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight;…

I have not covered up Your righteousness in my heart;

The psalmist has not kept the truth of God’s righteous character private. What he knows inwardly has shaped his life and is expressed openly before others.

Psa 37:30-31 The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom…
Deu 6:6-7 These words I am commanding you today are to be…
Jer 20:9 “I will not mention Him or speak any more in His name…”…

I have declared Your faithfulness and salvation;

God’s faithful care and deliverance have been publicly acknowledged. The psalmist testifies that the Lord keeps His promises and saves those who call upon Him.

Psa 71:15 My mouth will declare Your righteousness and Your salvation…
Psa 71:22 So I will praise You with the harp for Your faithfulness…
Psa 96:2 Sing to the LORD, bless His name; proclaim His salvation…

I have not concealed Your loving devotion and faithfulness from the great assembly.

Before the gathered people of God, he recounts the Lord’s steadfast love and dependability. Personal deliverance becomes a public witness that strengthens the congregation’s trust in the Lord.

Psa 89:1 A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the LORD…
Psa 35:18 Then I will give You thanks in the great assembly;…
Psa 22:25 My praise for You resounds in the great assembly;…

O LORD, do not withhold Your mercy from me;

David appeals to the covenant God who had sustained him through danger, sin, and distress. Aware of his own weakness and the troubles surrounding him, he depends entirely on the Lord’s compassion rather than his own strength or merit.

Psa 86:3 Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I call to You all day long.
Psa 25:6 Remember, O LORD, Your compassion and loving devotion,…
Psa 51:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. When Nathan the prophet…

Your loving devotion and faithfulness will always guard me.

God’s steadfast love and unfailing faithfulness provide lasting protection for those who trust Him. David rests in the certainty that the Lord keeps His promises and does not abandon His servants in times of trouble.

Psa 61:7 May he sit enthroned in God’s presence forever;…
Psa 57:3 He reaches down from heaven and saves me;…
Psa 89:24 My faithfulness and loving devotion will be with him,…

For evils without number surround me;

David describes troubles pressing in from every side, beyond any ability to count or escape. His life included danger from Saul, hostile nations, and rebellion within his own household, yet the words also express the common experience of being hemmed in by calamity.

Psa 88:17 All day long they engulf me like water; they enclose me…
Psa 22:12 Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.
Psa 18:4-5 The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of chaos…

my sins have overtaken me, so that I cannot see.

The greatest burden is not merely his enemies but his own sin. Its guilt has overwhelmed him and left him without clarity, strength, or confidence before God. David does not excuse himself; he recognizes that his need for deliverance includes forgiveness.

Pro 5:22 The iniquities of a wicked man entrap him;…
Isa 59:10 Like the blind, we feel our way along the wall…
Psa 130:3 If You, O LORD, kept track of iniquities,…

They are more than the hairs of my head,

The comparison conveys an innumerable multitude. David’s awareness of sin is deep and personal, showing that no human effort can remove such guilt or restore fellowship with God.

Psa 69:4 Those who hate me without cause outnumber the hairs…
Psa 38:4 For my iniquities have overwhelmed me;…
Ezr 9:6 O my God, I am ashamed and embarrassed…

and my heart has failed within me.

Crushed by trouble and conscious of sin, David’s courage and strength collapse. His condition prepares for the plea that follows: only the Lord can rescue him from enemies, guilt, and despair.

Psa 143:4 My spirit grows faint within me; my heart is dismayed…
Psa 38:10 My heart pounds, my strength fails, and even the light…
Psa 73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is my portion…

Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me;

David appeals to the LORD for rescue, acknowledging that deliverance depends on God’s favor and power. Surrounded by trouble and conscious of his own sin, he looks to the covenant God who had repeatedly preserved him through danger and adversity. His cry anticipates the greater deliverance accomplished by Christ, who saves His people from sin and judgment.

2Sa 22:20 He brought me out into the open; He rescued me…
Psa 149:4 For the LORD takes pleasure in His people;…
Psa 71:2 In Your justice, rescue and deliver me;…

hurry, O LORD, to help me.

The danger is immediate, and David asks God to act without delay. Though his circumstances are urgent, his appeal rests in the LORD alone, the faithful God who hears His servants and comes to their aid.

Psa 70:1 For the choirmaster. Of David. To bring remembrance.…
Psa 38:22 Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior.
Psa 22:19 But You, O LORD, be not far off; O my Strength,…

May those who seek my life be ashamed and confounded;

David asks God to expose and frustrate those pursuing his destruction. Their schemes are not merely personal opposition but violent rebellion against the Lord’s servant. Shame and confusion describe the collapse of their plans under God’s judgment.

Psa 70:2-3 May those who seek my life be ashamed and confounded;…
Psa 35:4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame;…

may those who wish me harm be repelled and humiliated.

Those pressing forward in hostility are asked to be driven back in defeat. David looks to God as his defender, trusting that evil men will not ultimately prevail against the one God preserves.

Psa 35:5-6 May they be like chaff in the wind as the angel of the LORD…
Psa 35:26 May those who gloat in my distress be ashamed and confounded…
Psa 6:10 All my enemies will be ashamed and dismayed;…

May those who say to me, “Aha, aha!”

David asks God to confront those who openly rejoice over his distress and ridicule him. Their mockery reveals hostility toward the one God has chosen and protected.

Psa 35:21 They gape at me and say, “Aha, aha! Our eyes have seen!”
Psa 70:3 May those who say, “Aha, aha!” retreat…
Ezk 25:3 Tell the Ammonites to hear the word of the Lord GOD…

be appalled at their own shame.

He calls for their evil to return upon them, bringing public disgrace instead of the triumph they expected. God’s justice exposes the shame of those who delight in the suffering of the righteous.

Psa 35:26 May those who gloat in my distress be ashamed and confounded…
Psa 70:2 May those who seek my life be ashamed and confounded;…
Jer 20:11 But the LORD is with me like a fearsome warrior.…

May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;

Those who turn to God in faith find joy in His presence and confidence in His care. David’s words contrast the fate of his enemies with the gladness of those who seek the Lord and depend on Him.

Psa 70:4 May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;…
Psa 105:3 Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek…
1Ch 16:10 Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek…

may those who love Your salvation

God’s salvation includes His deliverance of His people from danger, guilt, and oppression. Those who have experienced His mercy value His saving work and recognize that their help comes from Him.

Psa 119:174 I long for Your salvation, O LORD, and Your law…
Psa 13:5 But I have trusted in Your loving devotion;…
Psa 9:14 that I may declare all Your praises—that within the gates…

always say, “The LORD be magnified!”

The proper response to God’s salvation is continual praise. God is magnified when His greatness, power, and faithfulness are openly acknowledged before others.

Psa 34:3 Magnify the LORD with me; let us exalt His name together.
Psa 69:30 I will praise God’s name in song and exalt Him…
Psa 35:27 May those who favor my vindication shout for joy…

But I am poor and needy;

David admits his helplessness and dependence on God. His need includes more than outward hardship; he has no strength in himself to overcome the dangers surrounding him.

Psa 109:22 For I am poor and needy; my heart is wounded within me.
Psa 86:1 A prayer of David. Incline Your ear, O LORD, and answer me,…
Psa 34:6 This poor man called out, and the LORD heard him; …

may the Lord think of me.

He asks God to give personal attention to his distress and act on his behalf. The appeal rests on God’s covenant care for those who seek Him.

Neh 5:19 Remember me favorably, O my God, for all that…
Psa 106:4 Remember me, O LORD, in Your favor to Your people;…
Luk 23:42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when You come”…

You are my helper and deliverer;

David recognizes God as the one who sustains him in present trouble and rescues him from his enemies. God’s past faithfulness gives him confidence to call for help again.

Psa 70:5 But I am poor and needy; hurry to me, O God.…
Psa 54:4 Surely God is my helper; the Lord is my sustainer…
Psa 144:2 He is my steadfast love and my fortress, my stronghold…

O my God, do not delay.

The danger is urgent, and David asks for swift deliverance. His prayer closes with trust that God is able to act at the needed time.

Hab 2:3 For the vision awaits an appointed time;…
Isa 46:13 I am bringing My righteousness near; it is not far away…
Psa 70:1 For the choirmaster. Of David. To bring remembrance.…
