Jeremiah Remains in Judah

This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD

Jeremiah’s message came by direct revelation from God, confirming his authority as the Lord’s prophet even amid Jerusalem’s fall.

Jer 7:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD…
Jer 11:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
Jer 1:4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying:

after Nebuzaradan captain of the guard had released him at Ramah,

Nebuzaradan, a leading Babylonian officer, oversaw the captives gathered at Ramah before their deportation. Though Babylon carried out the destruction of Judah, Jeremiah’s release fulfilled God’s earlier promise to preserve him.

Jer 39:11-14 Now Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had given orders…
2Ki 25:8-10 On the seventh day of the fifth month,…
Jer 31:15 This is what the LORD says: “A voice is heard in Ramah…

having found him bound in chains among all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah

Jeremiah was initially treated as one of the captives, sharing the humiliation and suffering brought upon the nation. His chains did not mean God had abandoned him; they showed the full severity of the judgment that had fallen on Jerusalem.

Psa 105:18 They bruised his feet with shackles and placed his neck…
2Ch 36:20 Those who escaped the sword were carried by…

who were being exiled to Babylon.

The deportation marked the beginning of Judah’s Babylonian captivity, the judgment God had repeatedly announced through Jeremiah because of the nation’s persistent rebellion.

The captain of the guard found Jeremiah

Nebuzaradan, a senior Babylonian officer, located Jeremiah after Jerusalem’s fall. Though Judah’s leaders had imprisoned the prophet for announcing the city’s judgment, Babylon’s commander recognized him and ensured his release. Jeremiah’s preservation fulfilled God’s protection during the city’s destruction and deportation.

and said to him,

Nebuzaradan addressed Jeremiah with unusual respect, acknowledging that the prophet had spoken truthfully about Jerusalem’s fate. The conqueror’s treatment of Jeremiah contrasted sharply with the rejection he had received from his own people.

Jer 37:17 Later, King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah and received him…
Jer 38:14-17 Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet…
Jer 42:1-6 Then all the commanders of the forces, along with Johanan…

“The LORD your God decreed this disaster on this place,

Nebuzaradan understood that Jerusalem’s collapse was not merely a Babylonian victory but the judgment of Israel’s God. The destruction of the city and temple came after Judah’s persistent rebellion, idolatry, and refusal to heed God’s warnings.

2Ki 22:18-20 But as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire…
2Ki 21:12-15 this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…
Jer 25:8-11 Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…

and now the LORD has fulfilled it;

Judah’s fall came exactly as God had warned through Jeremiah. The destruction of Jerusalem and the exile were not unforeseen disasters but the outworking of God’s declared judgment.

Lam 2:17 The LORD has done what He planned; He has accomplished His…
Jos 21:45 Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel…

He has done just as He said.

God carried out His word against a nation that had repeatedly rejected His warnings. The Babylonian invasion confirmed that the Lord’s promises of judgment, as well as His promises of future restoration, are certain.

Num 23:19 God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man,…
1Ki 8:56 Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel…

Because you people have sinned against the LORD

Idolatry, injustice, and covenant unfaithfulness had marked Judah’s history. Their rebellion brought the curses God had warned would follow disobedience.

2Ki 17:7 All this happened because the people of Israel had sinned…
Dan 9:5 we have sinned and done wrong. We have acted wickedly.…

and have not obeyed His voice,

The people refused the repeated calls of God through His prophets, including Jeremiah. Their rejection was ultimately a refusal to submit to the Lord’s authority.

Deu 28:15 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God…
Jer 42:21 For I have told you today, but you have not obeyed…

this thing has happened to you.

The Babylonian conquest, the destruction of Jerusalem, and the exile were the consequences of Judah’s persistent sin. Yet the judgment also preserved a remnant through whom God would later bring restoration.

Jer 44:23 Because you burned incense and sinned against the LORD…
Jos 23:15 But just as every good thing the LORD your God promised you…
2Ch 36:16 But they mocked the messengers of God, despising His words…

But now, behold, I am freeing you today from the chains that were on your wrists.

After Jerusalem fell in 586 BC, Jeremiah was mistakenly included among the prisoners being taken away by the Babylonians. Nebuzaradan recognized that Jeremiah had not opposed Babylon’s advance for personal gain but had faithfully proclaimed the Lord’s warnings. His release showed that God preserved His prophet amid the judgment that had come upon Judah.

Act 12:7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone…
Psa 107:14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death…
Psa 146:7 He executes justice for the oppressed and gives food…

If it pleases you to come with me to Babylon, then come, and I will take care of you.

Nebuzaradan offered Jeremiah protection and provision in Babylon, where many Judeans would live in exile. Though Babylon had destroyed Jerusalem, the Lord remained in control of His people’s future and would preserve a remnant.

Gen 45:9-11 Now return quickly to my father and tell him,…
Gen 50:21 Therefore do not be afraid. I will provide for you…
Gen 47:11-12 So Joseph settled his father and brothers…

But if it seems wrong to you to come with me to Babylon, go no farther.

Jeremiah was not compelled to leave Judah. The Babylonian captain gave him unusual freedom because of the respect accorded him and the favor God had granted him.

Gen 24:55-58 But her brother and mother said, “Let the girl remain…
Jos 24:15 But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the LORD,…
Deu 30:19-20 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today…

Look, the whole land is before you.

Judah was devastated, but its remaining towns and fields were open to Jeremiah. He could remain among the poor and the remnant left in the land, continuing to speak God’s word to those who survived.

Gen 13:9 Is not the whole land before you? Now separate yourself…
Deu 1:8 See, I have placed the land before you. Enter and possess…
Jos 1:3 I have given you every place where the sole of your foot…

Wherever it seems good and right to you, go there.”

Jeremiah was free to choose where he would serve. He ultimately remained in Judah with Gedaliah and the people gathered at Mizpah.

Rut 1:16-17 But Ruth replied: “Do not urge me to leave you”…

But before Jeremiah turned to go,

Jeremiah had been released from Babylonian custody and stood free to determine where he would live after Jerusalem’s fall.

Nebuzaradan added,

The captain of the guard had overseen Babylon’s actions in Jerusalem and recognized that Jeremiah was not to be treated as an enemy.

2Ki 25:8 On the seventh day of the fifth month,…
Jer 52:12 On the tenth day of the fifth month, in the nineteenth year…
2Ki 25:11 Then Nebuzaradan carried into exile the people…

“Return to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan,

Gedaliah came from a family that had supported faithful reform and had previously protected Jeremiah. He was a suitable leader for the small population left in Judah.

2Ki 25:23 When all the commanders of the armies and their men…
Jer 26:24 Nevertheless, Ahikam son of Shaphan supported Jeremiah,…
2Ki 22:12-14 and commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam son of Shaphan…

whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the cities of Judah,

Babylon placed Gedaliah over the remaining towns and people as its local governor after removing Judah’s king and leading many into exile.

2Ki 25:22 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon appointed Gedaliah…
Jer 27:6 So now I have placed all these lands under the authority…
Jer 28:14 For this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…

and stay with him among the people,

Jeremiah could continue his ministry among those who remained in the land and offer counsel during a time of political uncertainty.

2Ki 25:24 And Gedaliah took an oath before them and their men,…
Jer 42:10-12 If you will indeed stay in this land…
Jer 29:5-7 Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens…

or go anywhere else that seems right.”

Nebuzaradan gave Jeremiah unusual freedom, allowing him to choose either life under Gedaliah’s administration or another destination.

Pro 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end…
Jdg 17:6 In those days there was no king in Israel;…
Jdg 21:25 In those days there was no king in Israel;…

Then the captain of the guard gave him a ration and a gift and released him.

Jeremiah left with provisions and honor rather than punishment, showing that the Babylonians had acted favorably toward him after Jerusalem’s destruction.

Jer 52:34 And the king of Babylon provided Jehoiachin a daily portion…
2Ki 25:27 On the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month…

So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam

Released by the Babylonian commander, Jeremiah chose to join Gedaliah, the governor appointed over Judah’s remaining population. Gedaliah’s father, Ahikam, had once protected Jeremiah from execution, and his family had long supported the prophet. Jeremiah’s presence affirmed the lawful order established after Jerusalem’s fall.

at Mizpah

Mizpah, north of Jerusalem, became the administrative center for the surviving community. Its defensible location and established role as a gathering place made it suitable for governing the land after the destruction of Jerusalem.

2Ki 25:23 When all the commanders of the armies and their men…
Jdg 20:1 Then all the Israelites from Dan to Beersheba…
1Sa 7:5 Then Samuel said, “Gather all Israel to Mizpah”…

and stayed with him among the people who were left in the land.

Jeremiah remained with the remnant rather than going to Babylon. Most of those left were poor laborers and others not taken into exile. By living among them, Jeremiah continued his ministry in Judah and bore witness that God had not abandoned His people despite the judgment they had endured.

Jer 39:10 But Nebuzaradan left behind in the land of Judah…
Jer 43:6 the men, the women, the children, the king’s daughters…

Gedaliah Governs in Judah

When all the commanders and men of the armies in the field heard

Surviving Judean military leaders had escaped the Babylonian siege and remained scattered in the countryside. Their awareness of events in Jerusalem shows that communication continued among the remnant forces despite Judah’s defeat.

2Ki 25:23 When all the commanders of the armies and their men…
Jer 41:11 When Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders…

that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam over the land

Nebuchadnezzar replaced Judah’s fallen monarchy with Gedaliah as Babylon’s governor. Gedaliah came from a family known for supporting Jeremiah and accepting Babylon’s rule as God’s judgment on Judah. His appointment was intended to bring order to the devastated land.

2Ki 25:22 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon appointed Gedaliah…
Jer 41:2 Then Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the ten men…
2Ki 25:24 And Gedaliah took an oath before them and their men,…

and that he had put him in charge of the men, women, and children who were the poorest of the land

The Babylonians had deported many leaders, soldiers, craftsmen, and wealthy citizens, leaving behind those with little social or political influence. Gedaliah was responsible for this vulnerable remnant and for restoring basic stability and agricultural life.

Jer 39:10 But Nebuzaradan left behind in the land of Judah…
2Ki 25:12 But the captain of the guard left behind some of the poorest…
2Ki 24:14 He carried into exile all Jerusalem—all the commanders…

and had not been exiled to Babylon,

Those left in Judah formed the beginning of a surviving population in the land. Though reduced and impoverished, they remained under God’s providential care after the judgment of exile.

2Ki 25:11 Then Nebuzaradan carried into exile the people…
Jer 52:15-16 Then Nebuzaradan captain of the guard carried into exile…
Jer 39:9 Then Nebuzaradan captain of the guard carried away…

they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah—

After Jerusalem’s fall, Babylon appointed Gedaliah governor over the remaining population of Judah. Mizpah, in Benjamin, became the center of his administration and a place of refuge for soldiers and civilians seeking stability under Babylonian rule.

2Ki 25:23 When all the commanders of the armies and their men…
Jer 41:1 In the seventh month, Ishmael son of Nethaniah,…
Jer 39:14 had Jeremiah brought from the courtyard…

Ishmael son of Nethaniah,

Ishmael belonged to the royal family and carried the prestige of David’s line. His later murder of Gedaliah revealed the dangerous opposition to the new order in Judah.

Jer 41:2 Then Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the ten men…
Jer 41:3 Ishmael also killed all the Jews who were with Gedaliah…
2Ki 25:25 In the seventh month, however, Ishmael son of Nethaniah,…

Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah,

Johanan became a prominent leader among the surviving military commanders and later warned Gedaliah about Ishmael’s intentions. The brothers came with their men, representing organized forces still active in the land.

Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan,

Nebuchadnezzar appointed Gedaliah governor over Judah’s remaining population after Jerusalem’s fall. His father, Ahikam, had protected Jeremiah, and his grandfather, Shaphan, served under Josiah during the rediscovery of the Book of the Law. Gedaliah came from a family connected with Judah’s reforming and faithful leaders.

assuring them, “Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans.

Rather than resist Babylon, the Chaldeans, and bring further judgment upon the land, Gedaliah urged the remnant to accept Babylonian authority.

Jer 27:12 And to Zedekiah king of Judah I spoke the same message:…
Jer 27:17 Do not listen to them. Serve the king of Babylon and live!…
Jer 42:11 Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you now fear;…

Live in the land and serve the king of Babylon,

Remaining in Judah would preserve a Jewish community in the land, allowing the people to rebuild their homes and cultivate the fields under Babylonian rule.

Jer 27:6 So now I have placed all these lands under the authority…
Jer 29:5-7 Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens…
2Ki 24:1 During Jehoiakim’s reign, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon…

and it will go well with you.

Peace and survival depended on obeying the command to submit. Gedaliah’s counsel offered the remnant a path of preservation after the destruction of Jerusalem.

Jer 38:20 “They will not hand you over,” Jeremiah replied.…
Jer 42:6 Whether it is pleasant or unpleasant, we will obey…
Deu 5:33 You must walk in all the ways that the LORD your God…

As for me, I will stay in Mizpah to represent you before the Chaldeans who come to us.

Mizpah became the center of the remaining Jewish community after Jerusalem’s fall. Gedaliah, appointed by Babylon, remained there to receive Babylonian officials and speak on behalf of the people. His presence offered the survivors a measure of order under Babylonian rule.

2Ki 25:22-24 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon appointed Gedaliah…
Jer 39:13-14 So Nebuzaradan captain of the guard, Nebushazban…

As for you, gather wine grapes, summer fruit, and oil,

Gedaliah urged the people to return to the work of harvest and provision. The land could still sustain those who remained, and gathering its produce would help restore daily life after the destruction of Judah.

Amo 8:1-2 This is what the Lord GOD showed me: I saw a basket…
Deu 11:14 then I will provide rain for your land in season,…
2Ch 31:5 As soon as the order went out, the Israelites provided…

place them in your storage jars,

Preserving the harvest prepared the community for the months ahead. The instruction assumed that the people could settle safely enough to store food and rebuild their households.

2Ki 4:3-7 “Go,” said Elisha, “borrow empty jars from all your neighbors.…
2Ch 32:28 He also made storehouses for the harvest of grain…

and live in the cities you have taken.”

The survivors were to occupy the towns left vacant by the invasion and establish themselves there. Though Judah had been judged and Jerusalem lay in ruins, God allowed a remnant to remain in the land.

Deu 19:1-2 When the LORD your God has cut off the nations…
Jos 24:13 So I gave you a land on which you did not toil……

When all the Jews in Moab, Ammon, Edom, and all the other lands heard

Jewish survivors had scattered into the surrounding nations during Babylon’s invasion of Judah. Moab, Ammon, and Edom lay near Judah and had long-standing, often hostile relations with Israel. Their presence in these territories shows that Jewish communities endured beyond Judah’s borders after Jerusalem’s fall.

2Ki 25:23 When all the commanders of the armies and their men…
Jer 16:15 Instead they will say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives,…
Ezk 11:16 Therefore declare that this is what the Lord GOD says:…

that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah

Nebuchadnezzar had not emptied the land completely but allowed some of its poorest inhabitants to remain. This remnant preserved a Jewish presence in Judah and provided a measure of continuity after the devastation of the kingdom.

2Ki 25:12 But the captain of the guard left behind some of the poorest…
Jer 39:10 But Nebuzaradan left behind in the land of Judah…
2Ki 24:14 He carried into exile all Jerusalem—all the commanders…

and had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, over them,

Gedaliah was appointed to govern Judah under Babylonian authority. He came from a respected family connected with Judah’s earlier reforms: Ahikam had defended Jeremiah, and Shaphan had served under Josiah. Gedaliah sought to establish peace, encourage cultivation of the land, and prevent further conflict with Babylon.

2Ki 25:22 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon appointed Gedaliah…
Jer 39:14 had Jeremiah brought from the courtyard…
Jer 26:24 Nevertheless, Ahikam son of Shaphan supported Jeremiah,…

they all returned from all the places to which they had been banished

Jews who had fled or been scattered during Babylon’s invasion returned when they heard that a remnant had been permitted to remain in the land. Their return marked a brief restoration after Jerusalem’s fall.

Jer 29:14 I will be found by you, declares the LORD, …
Jer 23:3 Then I Myself will gather the remnant of My flock…
Ezk 11:17 Therefore declare that this is what the Lord GOD says:…

and came to the land of Judah,

Judah remained the homeland God had given to His people and the center of their national and covenant identity. Though the kingdom had been judged, God had not removed every inhabitant from the land.

Ezr 2:1 Now these are the people of the province who came up…
Neh 7:6 These are the people of the province who came up…

Nebuchadnezzar had appointed Gedaliah as governor over the remaining population. From Mizpah, north of Jerusalem, he provided order and encouraged the people to settle, cultivate the land, and live peaceably under Babylonian rule.

Jer 39:14 had Jeremiah brought from the courtyard…
Jer 41:1 In the seventh month, Ishmael son of Nethaniah,…

And they gathered an abundance of wine grapes and summer fruit.

The harvest showed that the land could still sustain the remnant. God provided food and a measure of stability during a time of national loss, giving the people an opportunity to rebuild their lives.

The Plot against Gedaliah

Meanwhile, Johanan son of Kareah

Johanan was one of the surviving Judean leaders who had remained outside Babylonian control during Jerusalem’s fall. He emerged as a leading voice among the remnant and showed concern for the security of those left in the land.

Jer 41:11 When Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders…
Jer 41:16 Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders…
Jer 43:2 Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah,…

and all the commanders of the armies in the field

These commanders led scattered Judean forces that had survived the conquest, likely operating in the countryside rather than living under Babylonian administration. Their presence reveals that armed groups still remained and that Judah’s situation was unstable.

Jer 42:1 Then all the commanders of the forces, along with Johanan…
Jer 42:8 and he summoned Johanan son of Kareah, all the commanders…
Jer 43:4 So Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders…

came to Gedaliah at Mizpah

Gedaliah governed the Babylonian province of Judah from Mizpah, which became the center of administration after Jerusalem’s destruction. The commanders’ arrival offered an opportunity for the surviving Judeans to unite under Gedaliah’s leadership and rebuild peacefully under Babylonian authority.

2Ki 25:23 When all the commanders of the armies and their men…
Jer 41:1 In the seventh month, Ishmael son of Nethaniah,…
2Ki 25:25 In the seventh month, however, Ishmael son of Nethaniah,…

and said to him,

Johanan brought Gedaliah a warning that demanded immediate attention.

1Sa 20:2-4 “Far from it!” Jonathan replied. “You will not die.…
Est 2:21-23 In those days, while Mordecai was sitting at the king’s gate…
2Ki 6:8-10 Now the king of Aram was at war against Israel.…

“Are you aware that Baalis king of the Ammonites

Baalis ruled a neighboring people long hostile to Israel. Ammon’s involvement shows that Judah’s weakness after Babylon’s conquest invited outside powers to influence its affairs.

2Sa 10:1-2 Some time later, the king of the Ammonites died…
1Sa 11:1-2 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up and laid siege…
Jdg 11:12-13 Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites…

has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah

Ishmael was of royal descent and appears to have been drawn into a plot against Babylon’s appointed governor. His alliance with Baalis exposed the divisions among Judah’s remaining leaders.

Jer 41:1-2 In the seventh month, Ishmael son of Nethaniah,…
2Ki 25:25 In the seventh month, however, Ishmael son of Nethaniah,…
1Ki 19:1-2 Now Ahab told Jezebel everything that Elijah had done…

to take your life?”

Gedaliah’s murder would remove the man responsible for governing the remnant and destabilize the land further.

1Sa 23:15-16 While David was in Horesh in the Wilderness of Ziph,…
1Ki 19:10 I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,…
Exo 4:19 Now the LORD had said to Moses in Midian, “Go back to Egypt,…

But Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not believe them.

Gedaliah rejected the report despite Johanan’s concern. His trust in Ishmael proved disastrous, and his death soon plunged the remnant of Judah into fear and disorder.

Pro 14:15 The simple man believes every word, but the prudent man…
Pro 29:1 A man who remains stiff-necked after much reproof…
2Ch 36:15-16 Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers,…

Then Johanan son of Kareah spoke privately to Gedaliah at Mizpah.

Johanan, one of Judah’s surviving military commanders, met Gedaliah away from public attention because the matter involved an immediate threat to the fragile government established after Jerusalem’s fall. Mizpah had become the administrative center for the remnant left in the land under Babylonian authority.

2Ki 25:23 When all the commanders of the armies and their men…
Jer 39:14 had Jeremiah brought from the courtyard…
2Sa 3:27 When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab pulled him aside…

“Let me go and kill Ishmael son of Nethaniah,” he said.

Johanan believed Ishmael, a man of royal descent, was preparing to remove Gedaliah and disrupt Babylon’s appointed order. He offered to act before Ishmael could carry out his plan.

2Sa 16:9-10 Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king,…
1Sa 26:8-11 Today God has delivered your enemy into your hand.…
2Ki 25:25 In the seventh month, however, Ishmael son of Nethaniah,…

“No one will know it.

Johanan proposed a secret killing, likely to avoid open conflict and prevent Ishmael’s supporters from reacting against Gedaliah or the people gathered at Mizpah.

Deu 27:24 Cursed is he who strikes down his neighbor in secret…
Psa 64:5-6 They hold fast to their evil purpose; they speak of hiding…
Pro 1:11-12 If they say, “Come along, let us lie in wait for blood…”…

Why should he take your life and scatter all the people of Judah who have gathered to you,

Gedaliah’s death would leave the remnant without recognized leadership and expose them to renewed violence, retaliation, and displacement. The people at Mizpah depended on his leadership for security and stability.

Zec 13:7 Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, against the man…
Mat 26:31 Then Jesus said to them, “This very night…
Mrk 14:27 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away,…

so that the remnant of Judah would perish?”

Johanan understood that the surviving community was small and vulnerable. If Ishmael succeeded, the remaining population of Judah could be destroyed or driven away, bringing further ruin upon a land already devastated by Babylon’s conquest.

Jer 42:15-17 then hear the word of the LORD, O remnant of Judah!…
Jer 44:14 none of the remnant of Judah who have gone to reside…
Ezk 11:13 Now as I was prophesying, Pelatiah son of Benaiah died.…

But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah,

Gedaliah governed the remnant in Judah under Babylonian authority. As the son of Ahikam, who had protected Jeremiah, he came from a family associated with support for God’s prophet. Johanan was a commander among the surviving Judean forces and had learned of a plot against Gedaliah.

2Ki 25:22-24 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon appointed Gedaliah…
Jer 39:14 had Jeremiah brought from the courtyard…
Jer 26:24 Nevertheless, Ahikam son of Shaphan supported Jeremiah,…
