Isaiah 11
Berean Study Bible

The Root of Jesse

Then a shoot will spring up from the stump of Jesse,

Jesse, the father of David, represents the royal line that appeared cut down after Judah’s exile and the loss of Davidic rule. Yet God had not abandoned His covenant with David. From that humbled and seemingly ruined house, a new King would arise.

1Sa 16:1-13 Now the LORD said to Samuel, How long are you going to mourn…
2Sa 7:12-16 And when your days are fulfilled and you rest…
Mat 1:5-6 Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab,…

and a Branch from his roots will bear fruit.

The promised ruler would come from David’s family and possess a rightful claim to his throne. He would bring enduring life, righteousness, peace, and restoration. Jesus Christ fulfills this promise as the Messiah, the Son of David, whose kingdom will not end.

Jer 23:5 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,…
Jer 33:15 In those days and at that time I will cause to sprout…
Zec 6:12 And you are to tell him that this is what the LORD of Hosts…

The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him—

The Messiah will receive the Holy Spirit in full and abiding measure, marking Him as God’s chosen King. Unlike Israel’s judges and kings, who were empowered for particular moments or offices, He will possess the Spirit’s presence without interruption. Jesus’ baptism publicly revealed this divine anointing as the Spirit descended upon Him.

Isa 42:1 Here is My Servant, whom I uphold, My Chosen One,…
Jhn 1:32-33 Then John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending…
Mat 3:16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water.…

the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,

He will govern with perfect judgment, seeing clearly what is right and discerning the true condition of every heart and circumstance. His wisdom will not depend on human counsel or outward appearances.

Col 2:3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom…

the Spirit of counsel and strength,

He will possess both the wisdom to establish God’s purposes and the power to accomplish them. As the promised King, He will lead decisively, defeat His enemies, and carry out God’s plan without weakness or failure.

Pro 8:14 Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have insight…
Jer 32:19 One great in counsel and mighty in deed,…
Psa 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts…

the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD.

He will know the Father’s will perfectly and live in complete reverence and obedience to Him. His rule will be shaped by unwavering devotion to God, providing the standard of righteousness for His kingdom.

Pro 2:5 then you will discern the fear of the LORD…
Pro 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,…
Psa 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom…

And He will delight in the fear of the LORD.

The Messiah will take perfect pleasure in revering, obeying, and honoring the LORD. His rule will proceed from complete submission to God’s will, unlike earthly rulers often governed by ambition, fear, or self-interest.

Psa 112:1 Hallelujah! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,…
Isa 33:6 He will be the sure foundation for your times,…
Pro 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom…

He will not judge by what His eyes see,

His judgments will not rest on outward appearance, social standing, wealth, strength, or public reputation. He will know the true condition of every person and judge with complete righteousness.

1Sa 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance…
Jhn 7:24 Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging…
Deu 1:17 Show no partiality in judging; hear both small and great…

and He will not decide by what His ears hear,

Reports, accusations, and public opinion will not mislead Him. He will discern truth without error and render justice according to reality, establishing the righteous rule promised for the Messiah’s kingdom.

Jhn 7:51 Does our law convict a man without first hearing from him…
Pro 18:13 He who answers a matter before he hears it—…
Deu 19:15 A lone witness is not sufficient to establish any wrongdoing…

Psa 72:2 May he judge Your people with righteousness…
Pro 31:9 Open your mouth, judge righteously, and defend…
Jer 22:16 He took up the cause of the poor and needy,…

and with equity He will decide for the lowly of the earth.

Those without influence will receive fair treatment under His reign. He will expose injustice and establish order according to God’s standard.

Psa 113:7-8 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy…
Psa 82:3-4 Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless;…
Pro 22:22-23 Do not rob a poor man because he is poor,…

He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth

His authoritative word will bring judgment upon rebellious peoples and nations. No military force or human counsel will be needed to accomplish His decree.

Rev 1:16 He held in His right hand seven stars, and a sharp…
Isa 49:2 He made My mouth like a sharp sword; He hid Me…

and slay the wicked with the breath of His lips.

The Messiah will decisively remove persistent evil from the earth. His judgment will be final, demonstrating His complete authority over all who oppose God.

2Th 2:8 And then the lawless one will be revealed…
Job 4:9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast…
Hos 6:5 Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets;…

Righteousness will be the belt around His hips,

Righteousness will mark the Messiah’s character and government. Like a soldier’s belt that secures his equipment for service, it portrays His constant readiness to act with perfect justice. He will judge rightly, defend the helpless, and rule without corruption or partiality.

Job 29:14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me;…
Isa 61:10 I will rejoice greatly in the LORD, my soul will exult…
Isa 59:17 He put on righteousness like a breastplate,…

and faithfulness the sash around His waist.

Faithfulness will likewise distinguish His reign. The Messiah will remain fully true to God’s covenant, His promises, and His judgments. His rule will be dependable and enduring, reflecting the certainty that God will accomplish all He has promised through Him.

Psa 89:8 O LORD God of Hosts, who is like You? O mighty LORD…

2Ch 26:8 The Ammonites brought tribute to Uzziah,…
2Sa 12:31 David brought out the people who were there…

The LORD will devote to destruction the gulf of the Sea of Egypt;

As He delivered Israel through the Red Sea at the Exodus, the LORD will remove the barrier separating His scattered people from their homeland. The judgment will be complete, displaying His authority over the waters and over the nations that have oppressed them.

There will be a highway

God will provide a clear and secure route for the return of His people, removing barriers that once seemed impossible to overcome. The image recalls the royal roads built for travel and administration, yet the way described here is established by the Lord Himself.

Isa 62:10 Build it up, build up the highway; clear away the stones;…
Isa 40:3 A voice of one calling: “Prepare the way for the LORD…

for the remnant of His people

Though many in Israel and Judah faced judgment, God preserved a faithful portion according to His covenant promises. Their survival demonstrates that His purposes for His people will not fail.

Isa 10:20-22 On that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors…
Mic 2:12 I will surely gather all of you, O Jacob; …
Zep 3:13 The remnant of Israel will no longer do wrong or speak lies,…

as there was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.
