This rhetorical question emphasizes the uniqueness and incomparability of God. It echoes the sentiments found in Exodus 15:11, where Moses and the Israelites sing of God's unmatched majesty and holiness after the crossing of the Red Sea. O mighty LORD
The term "mighty" underscores God's strength and power. It is a reminder of His ability to accomplish His will and fulfill His promises. This attribute of God is a source of comfort and assurance for believers, as seen in Isaiah 9:6, where the coming Messiah is called "Mighty God." The might of the LORD is a recurring theme in the Psalms, often linked to His acts of creation and salvation.

Your faithfulness surrounds You
God's faithfulness is depicted as an encompassing attribute, suggesting that it is integral to His nature and actions. This faithfulness is a key theme throughout Scripture, as seen in Lamentations 3:22-23, where God's mercies are described as new every morning. The idea of being surrounded by faithfulness implies that all of God's dealings with humanity are marked by reliability and steadfast love. This assurance of God's faithfulness is foundational to the covenant relationship between God and His people, as demonstrated in His promises to Abraham, Moses, and David.

• The psalmist begins by addressing “O LORD God of Hosts”, spotlighting God as the Commander of angelic armies. This title underscores:

– His sovereign authority over every spiritual and earthly power (1 Samuel 17:45; Psalm 46:7).

– His readiness to defend His people, just as He surrounded Elisha with heavenly forces in 2 Kings 6:17.

– His holiness, echoed by the seraphim who cry, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts” in Isaiah 6:3.

The verse lays a foundation of awe: we are speaking to the supreme Ruler who never loses a battle.

• This rhetorical question magnifies God’s uniqueness. Passages such as Exodus 15:11 (“Who is like You, O LORD…?”) and Jeremiah 10:6 (“There is none like You, O LORD”) insist that:

– No rival equals His character, wisdom, or power.

Psalm 89:8 paints a fourfold portrait: the LORD is the all-powerful Commander of heaven’s armies, unrivaled in His being, mighty beyond measure, and perfectly faithful. Because this is literally true, we can worship Him with confidence, lean on His strength amid conflict, and trust every word He has spoken.

(8) O Lord.--The Hebrew marches more grandly than the Authorised Version:

"Jehovah, God of Hosts,

Who as Thou is mighty, Jah?

And Thy faithfulness surrounds Thee."

Or the last clause may be rendered, and what faithfulness is like that round about thee? We must either think of the attendant throngs of loyal angels, or of God clothed as it were with faithfulness.
