Berean Study Bible Ephraim’s IniquityThe Lord’s purpose to restore Israel also exposes the nation’s sin. Hos 6:1-2 Come, let us return to the LORD. For He has torn us… the iniquity of Ephraim will be exposed, The northern kingdom’s rebellion cannot be healed while it remains concealed. When God seeks to restore Israel, Ephraim’s iniquity is exposed. Hos 5:3 I know all about Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from Me.… as well as the crimes of Samaria. The capital reflected the idolatry, injustice, and political corruption of the kingdom it governed. Amo 3:9-10 Proclaim to the citadels of Ashdod and… For they practice deceit In their dealings with one another and in their unfaithfulness to God, they practice deceit. Hos 11:12 Ephraim surrounds Me with lies, the house of Israel… and thieves break in; Lawlessness had spread into private life, where thieves broke into homes, and into public life, where bands of robbers attacked in the streets. Mat 6:19-20 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… bandits raid in the streets. Violence and disorder had become public marks of a nation that had rejected the Lord’s ways. Psa 59:6-7 They return in the evening, snarling like dogs… But they fail to consider in their hearts Israel refuses to reckon with its conduct or acknowledge the covenant demands it has violated. Their inward disregard reveals settled rebellion rather than mere ignorance. Isa 44:19 And no one considers in his heart, no one has the knowledge… that I remember all their evil. The Lord has not overlooked the nation’s idolatry, corruption, and unfaithfulness. Every offense remains before Him and will be answered in judgment. Ezk 21:24 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:… Now their deeds are all around them; Their sin has become so widespread that its evidence surrounds them in public life, national policy, and worship. They cannot escape the consequences of what they have done. Pro 5:22 The iniquities of a wicked man entrap him;… they are before My face. Israel stands directly accountable before the holy God. Their deeds are fully exposed to Him, and His coming judgment is certain. Jer 16:17 For My eyes are on all their ways. They are not hidden… They delight the king with their evil, Israel’s corruption had reached the royal court. The king and his advisers were not grieved by the nation’s sin but benefited from it, approving the injustice, idolatry, and intrigue that strengthened their own positions. Instead of restraining evil and governing in righteousness, the throne became part of the nation’s rebellion against the Lord. Mic 3:11 Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach… and the princes with their lies. The leading officials sustained the kingdom through deception, likely involving false reports, political schemes, broken promises, and encouragement of idolatrous practices. Their lies concealed sin and protected corrupt leadership, drawing the nation further from covenant faithfulness. Such rulers helped prepare Israel for the judgment that would soon fall upon the northern kingdom. Pro 29:12 If a ruler listens to lies, all his officials… They are all adulterers, Israel had broken covenant faithfulness through idolatry and moral corruption. Their unfaithfulness reached throughout the nation, including its rulers and leading men. Jer 9:2 If only I had a traveler’s lodge in the wilderness,… like an oven heated by a baker Their sinful desires burned with the heat of an oven prepared for baking. Evil was not accidental but cultivated in the heart and carried out with deliberate intent. Pro 7:18-19 Come, let us take our fill of love till morning.… who needs not stoke the fire Like an oven that retains its heat, their corruption continued without restraint or outside pressure. Their hearts remained set on evil even while they waited for opportunity. Rom 1:27 Likewise, the men abandoned natural relations with women… from the kneading to the rising of the dough. The image portrays sin as persistent and patiently prepared. As dough is left to rise, conspiracies, lusts, and betrayals were allowed to grow until they produced their intended destruction. Mat 13:33 The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman… The princes are inflamed with wine Israel’s leaders abandon the sobriety and judgment required of those entrusted with governing the nation. Their drunkenness exposes the corruption already present in the royal court. Pro 31:4-5 It is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers… on the day of our king; A day intended to honor the king—likely a royal celebration or feast day, perhaps a coronation or birthday—becomes an occasion for excess. Rather than strengthening the nation through faithful leadership, the court displays the same unfaithfulness that had spread throughout Israel. Est 1:3-5 In the third year of his reign, Xerxes held a feast… so he joins hands with those who mock him. The king joins himself to reckless and contemptuous men instead of restraining them. His participation confirms that the nation’s corruption reaches its highest offices and prepares the way for judgment. Psa 1:1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel… For they prepare their heart like an oven Israel’s leaders nurtured evil desires in secret, deliberately preparing for treachery and violence. Their inward corruption was not accidental but carefully cultivated. Psa 140:2 who devise evil in their hearts and stir up war… while they lie in wait; They plotted against rivals and rulers, waiting for the right moment to carry out conspiracies that repeatedly brought instability to the northern kingdom. Pro 1:11 If they say, “Come along, let us lie in wait for blood…”… all night their anger smolders; Their resentment and ambition remained concealed for a time, growing stronger as they planned. Psa 4:4 Be angry, yet do not sin; on your bed, search your heart… in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire. What had been hidden erupted in open rebellion, murder, and political upheaval, bringing destructive consequences upon the nation. Psa 21:9 You will place them in a fiery furnace… All of them are hot as an oven, Israel’s people burn with unchecked desire for evil. Their hearts are continually stirred toward idolatry, violence, and intrigue, showing the depth of the nation’s moral collapse. Psa 21:9 You will place them in a fiery furnace… and they devour their rulers. The same corruption that marked the people consumed their leadership. In the final years of the Northern Kingdom, kings were repeatedly murdered or displaced through conspiracies and coups. 2Ki 15:10 Then Shallum son of Jabesh conspired against Zechariah,… All their kings fall; Israel’s throne became unstable as rulers rose and fell in rapid succession. Rather than bringing security, the kingdom’s rebellion against God produced disorder, bloodshed, and national weakness. 2Ki 15:30 Then Hoshea son of Elah led a conspiracy against Pekah… not one of them calls upon Me. Neither rulers nor people turned sincerely to the Lord in repentance. Even as judgment unfolded through internal violence and political ruin, they continued in their rebellion rather than seeking God’s mercy. Isa 64:7 No one calls on Your name or strives to take hold of You.… Ephraim mixes with the nations; Ephraim, the northern kingdom of Israel, had abandoned its calling to remain separate for the worship of the LORD. Through alliances, intermarriage, and adoption of pagan practices, Israel absorbed the idolatry and values of surrounding peoples. Their compromise corrupted their covenant identity and revealed spiritual unfaithfulness to God. Psa 106:35 but they mingled with the nations and adopted their customs. Ephraim is an unturned cake. Like bread left too long on one side of a baking stone, Ephraim was burnt on one side and raw on the other—useless and unfit. Israel retained outward elements of worship while embracing idolatry and political dependence on foreign nations. Their divided loyalty left them spiritually corrupt and unable to fulfill their purpose as God’s people. 1Ki 18:21 Then Elijah approached all the people and said,… Foreigners consume his strength, Ephraim’s dependence on foreign powers drained the nation politically, economically, and spiritually. Alliances and tribute to nations such as Assyria did not secure Israel; they increased its weakness and drew the people further from covenant faithfulness to the Lord. Pro 5:9-10 lest you concede your vigor to others,… but he does not notice. Israel failed to recognize that the very alliances it trusted were contributing to its decline. Isa 42:25 So He poured out on them His furious anger… Even his hair is streaked with gray, The image portrays a nation marked by advancing decay and approaching judgment. Ephraim had lost the vigor and stability it once possessed, yet the warning signs did not bring sober reflection. Psa 71:18 Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God,… but he does not know. Pride and spiritual blindness kept the people from admitting their condition or turning back to God. Isa 44:18 They do not comprehend or discern, for He has shut… Israel’s arrogance testifies against them, Israel’s persistent idolatry, injustice, and reliance on military and foreign alliances openly exposed its rebellion against the LORD. Their conduct itself bore witness to their guilt. Hos 5:5 Israel’s arrogance testifies against them;… yet they do not return to the LORD their God; Though God’s warnings and judgments were meant to turn them back, the northern kingdom continued in the sins that had marked it from its beginning. They refused the covenant Lord who had redeemed and established them. Hos 5:4 Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God… despite all this, they do not seek Him. Even under growing national distress, Israel looked elsewhere for security rather than seeking God’s help, mercy, and direction. Hos 5:15 Then I will return to My place until they admit their guilt… So Ephraim has become like a silly, senseless dove— Ephraim stands for the northern kingdom of Israel, whose leaders acted without spiritual judgment. Like a vulnerable bird fluttering from place to place, the nation ignored God’s warnings and sought safety through human schemes rather than covenant faithfulness. Deu 32:6 Is this how you repay the LORD, O foolish and senseless… calling out to Egypt, Israel looked to Egypt for military help, returning in spirit to the nation from which the Lord had delivered its ancestors. Dependence on Egypt revealed distrust of God’s protection and repeated the nation’s old pattern of longing for security apart from Him. Isa 30:2 They set out to go down to Egypt without asking… then turning to Assyria. Israel also appealed to Assyria, the rising empire that would ultimately conquer Samaria and carry the northern kingdom into exile in 722 BC. Its shifting alliances exposed a desperate, unstable policy that trusted foreign powers while abandoning the Lord. Hos 5:13 When Ephraim saw his sickness and Judah his wound,… As they go, I will spread My net over them; Israel’s leaders sought security through foreign alliances and idolatry, but their movements could not place them beyond God’s authority. Like birds caught in a hunter’s net, they would be trapped by the judgment their rebellion had brought upon them. Ezk 32:3 This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will spread My net… I will bring them down like birds of the air. Their plans for escape and self-preservation would fail. God would bring down the nation that had exalted itself in pride and trusted in political strength rather than in Him. Pro 1:17 How futile it is to spread the net where any bird can see it… I will chastise them when I hear them flocking together. Their united pursuit of sinful counsel and rebellion was fully known to God. The coming discipline would be deliberate and deserved, carrying out the warning already proclaimed against Israel. Psa 83:3-5 With cunning they scheme against Your people… Woe to them, for they have strayed from Me! God mourns Israel’s deliberate abandonment of the covenant. Like an unfaithful spouse, the Northern Kingdom had pursued idols and foreign alliances rather than trusting the Lord who had brought them out of Egypt. Isa 53:6 We all like sheep have gone astray, each one has turned… Destruction to them, for they have rebelled against Me! Israel’s idolatry, injustice, and refusal to heed God’s warnings were open rebellion, not ignorance. Their continued dependence on Baal worship and political schemes would bring the national ruin they sought to avoid. Isa 1:2 Listen, O heavens, and give ear, O earth… Though I would redeem them, they speak lies against Me. God remained willing to rescue His people, yet they answered Him with false worship, empty claims of loyalty, and deceitful repentance. Their lies rejected the mercy that could have spared them from judgment. Psa 78:35-37 And they remembered that God was their Rock,… They do not cry out to Me from their hearts Israel’s distress was not joined to genuine repentance or renewed loyalty to the Lord. Their religious displays concealed hearts still committed to rebellion. Jer 29:13 You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me… when they wail upon their beds. Their private grief arose chiefly from the suffering brought by famine, invasion, and national decline. They mourned their troubles without truly seeking the God against whom they had sinned. Psa 6:6 I am weary from groaning; all night I flood… They slash themselves for grain and new wine, In desperation for food and drink, they adopted pagan rites intended to gain fertility and prosperity. Rather than looking to the Lord, who had provided these covenant blessings, they pursued help through idolatrous practices. 1Ki 18:28 So they shouted louder and cut themselves with knives… but turn away from Me. Israel’s outward cries and rituals could not hide its refusal to return to the Lord. The nation continued to reject the covenant God while seeking relief from the consequences of its unfaithfulness. Psa 78:57 They turned back and were faithless like their fathers,… Although I trained and strengthened their arms, God gave Israel the strength and ability needed to defend the land and overcome its enemies. From the conquest under Joshua through the period of the judges and the monarchy, Israel’s victories depended ultimately on the Lord’s protection rather than military power alone. He also instructed His people through the Law and the prophets, providing both physical security and moral direction under the covenant. Psa 144:1 Of David. Blessed be the LORD, my Rock,… they plot evil against Me. Israel repaid God’s care with deliberate rebellion. In Hosea’s day, the northern kingdom pursued idolatry and relied on political alliances with surrounding nations instead of remaining faithful to the Lord. Their sin was not merely weakness or ignorance; they knowingly turned from the God who had sustained them. Psa 2:1-3 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?… They turn, but not to the Most High; Israel showed outward signs of returning but refused wholehearted repentance. Rather than seeking the Lord, the nation pursued idols and depended on political alliances for security. Hos 11:7 My people are bent on turning from Me, though they call… they are like a faulty bow. Israel was unreliable in covenant faithfulness, like a bow that fails when needed most. Their repeated rebellion left them unable to stand against coming judgment. Psa 78:57 They turned back and were faithless like their fathers,… Their leaders will fall by the sword Kings, princes, and officials who led the people into idolatry and political intrigue would perish in warfare as Assyria advanced against the northern kingdom. Ezk 21:12-13 Cry out and wail, O son of man, for the sword is wielded… for the cursing of their tongue; Their arrogant, deceitful, and rebellious words against God would bring judgment. Those entrusted with leadership had used their speech to promote falsehood and defy the Lord. Psa 59:12 By the sins of their mouths and the words of their lips,… for this they will be ridiculed in the land of Egypt. Egypt, the nation Israel had sought for help, would witness its humiliation. The people who had been delivered from Egypt would become an object of scorn there because they trusted human power rather than God. Jer 44:12 And I will take away the remnant of Judah… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
