2 Corinthians 6
Berean Study Bible

Paul’s Hardships and God’s Grace

As God’s fellow workers,

Paul and his companions serve under God’s authority in the ministry of reconciliation. Their labor depends on God’s power and carries the responsibility of faithfully proclaiming the message entrusted to them.

1Co 3:9 For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field…
1Th 3:2 We sent Timothy, our brother and fellow worker…
Php 2:25 But I thought it necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus,…

then, we urge you

Paul appeals earnestly to the Corinthians because their response to his ministry reflects their response to God’s message. Despite earlier tensions, he seeks their restoration and spiritual faithfulness.

2Co 5:20 Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ…
1Th 4:1 Finally, brothers, we ask and encourage you…
Rom 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy,…

not to receive God’s grace in vain.

God’s grace in Christ must not be treated as an empty profession or ignored in daily life. Those who have received forgiveness and reconciliation are called to continue in faith and live in a manner consistent with the Gospel.

1Co 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace to me…
Gal 2:21 I do not set aside the grace of God. For if righteousness…
Gal 5:4 You who are trying to be justified by the law…

For He says:

God’s words in Isaiah 49:8 were spoken in connection with the promised Servant and the restoration of Israel. Paul presents their fulfillment in the saving work of Christ and the proclamation of the gospel.

Rom 9:15 For He says to Moses: “I will have mercy…
Heb 3:7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear…”…

“In the time of favor I heard you,

God’s appointed time of favor had arrived through Christ, whose obedience secured redemption for His people.

Isa 49:8 This is what the LORD says: “In the time of favor…
Psa 69:13 But my prayer to You, O LORD, is for a time of favor.…

and in the day of salvation I helped you.”

God’s promised deliverance is no longer distant. Through Christ’s death and resurrection, salvation has been accomplished and is proclaimed to all who believe.

Isa 41:13 For I am the LORD your God, who takes hold of your hand…
Psa 46:1 For the choirmaster. Of the sons of Korah.…

Behold, now is the time of favor;

Paul presses the present reality of God’s grace. The Corinthians were not to treat the gospel as a future concern or an empty message.

Isa 61:2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor…
Luk 4:19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

now is the day of salvation!

The call demands a response of repentance and faith while God’s offer is openly declared.

Heb 4:7 God again designated a certain day as “Today,”…
Psa 95:7-8 For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture…

We put no obstacle in anyone’s way,

Paul sought to remove every preventable hindrance to faith in Christ. In Corinth’s morally permissive and religiously diverse culture, his conduct needed to match the Gospel he proclaimed. He was willing to endure hardship and surrender personal rights rather than give opponents grounds to accuse him of exploiting believers or weakening the message.

Rom 14:13 Therefore let us stop judging one another.…
1Co 8:9 Be careful, however, that your freedom does not…
1Co 10:32-33 Do not become a stumbling block, whether to Jews or Greeks……

so that no one can discredit our ministry.

Paul guarded the reputation of the ministry because it belonged to God, not to him. False charges, financial scandal, or inconsistent conduct could lead people to reject the Gospel before hearing it. By serving with integrity, Paul and his fellow workers showed themselves to be faithful representatives of Christ.

2Co 8:20-21 We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer…
Tit 2:7-8 In everything, show yourself to be an example…
1Ti 3:7 Furthermore, he must have a good reputation with outsiders,…

Rather, as servants of God

Believers are identified by humble devotion to God and faithful service in His name, following the pattern of Christ’s self-giving ministry.

Tit 1:1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ…
Jas 1:1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,…
1Co 4:1 So then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ…

we commend ourselves in every way:

Paul points to conduct that commends, or presents as worthy of respect or approval, the genuineness of his ministry. His life and labor provided visible evidence that he and his companions served Christ faithfully.

2Co 3:1 Are we beginning to commend ourselves again?…
2Co 5:12 We are not commending ourselves to you again.…
2Co 8:21 For we are taking great care to do what is right,…

in great endurance;

Their ministry required steadfast perseverance through prolonged opposition, weakness, and suffering.

Heb 10:36 You need to persevere, so that after you have done…
Col 1:11 being strengthened with all power…
Rom 5:3-4 Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings,…

in troubles, hardships, and calamities;

Paul had faced repeated pressures, deprivation, danger, and severe affliction as he carried the gospel through a hostile world.

2Co 4:8-9 We are hard pressed on all sides, but not crushed;…
2Co 11:23-27 Are they servants of Christ? I am speaking as if I were…
Rom 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?…

in beatings,

Paul repeatedly suffered physical punishment for preaching Christ, including the beating he and Silas received at Philippi before their imprisonment. Such treatment showed the hostility faced by those who proclaimed the gospel in cities governed by Roman authority.

2Co 11:24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes…
Act 16:22-23 The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas…
Act 5:40 At this, they yielded to Gamaliel. They called the apostles…

imprisonments,

Paul was confined on several occasions because of his ministry. Even in prison, he testified to guards and prisoners and continued strengthening the churches through letters and trusted coworkers.

2Co 11:23 Are they servants of Christ? I am speaking as if I were…
Act 16:23-24 And after striking them with many blows, they threw them…
Act 12:4-5 He arrested him and put him in prison, handing him over…

and riots;

Public disturbances followed Paul’s preaching when the gospel confronted established religious practices and economic interests. In Ephesus, the threat to idol-making profits helped ignite a citywide uproar.

Act 19:28-29 When the men heard this, they were enraged…
Act 21:30-31 The whole city was stirred up, and the people…
Act 17:5-8 The Jews, however, became jealous. So they brought…

in labor,

Paul worked diligently in ministry and supported himself through tentmaking when necessary. He sought to avoid burdening believers while giving himself fully to the work entrusted to him.

1Co 4:12 We work hard with our own hands. When we are vilified…
1Th 2:9 Surely you recall, brothers, our labor and toil.…
Act 20:34 You yourselves know that these hands of mine…

sleepless nights,

Travel, danger, prayer, pastoral concern, and the demands of ministry often deprived Paul of rest. His service involved sustained hardship rather than comfort or security.

2Co 11:27 in labor and toil and often without sleep,…
Act 20:31 Therefore be alert and remember that for three years…
1Th 3:10 Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you…

and hunger;

At times Paul lacked adequate food and other necessities. He endured deprivation without abandoning his calling, depending on God’s provision as he carried the gospel from place to place.

1Co 4:11 To this very hour we are hungry and thirsty,…
Php 4:12 I know how to live humbly, and I know how to abound.…
Mat 4:2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry.

in purity,

Paul points to moral integrity and a life set apart from sin. Such purity guards the minister’s witness and reflects the renewing work of Christ in those who belong to Him.

1Ti 5:22 Do not be too quick in the laying on of hands…
1Ti 4:12 Let no one despise your youth, but set an example…
1Jn 3:3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself…

knowledge,

This is a growing understanding of God’s revealed truth and will. Faithful ministry requires discernment shaped by Scripture rather than human wisdom or cultural pressures.

Col 1:9-10 we have not stopped praying for you and asking God…
2Pe 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior…
Php 1:9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound…

patience,

Patience enables believers to endure opposition, hardship, and delay without abandoning obedience. Paul’s own sufferings showed that steadfastness was necessary for gospel ministry.

2Ti 3:10 You, however, have observed my teaching, my conduct,…
Eph 4:2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience,…
Jas 1:4 Allow perseverance to finish its work, …

and kindness;

Kindness expresses itself in compassionate, gracious treatment of others, including those who are difficult or hostile. In a divided and self-centered society, it displayed the character of Christ.

Eph 4:32 Be kind and tenderhearted to one another,…
Col 3:12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved…
Tit 3:4-5 But when the kindness of God our Savior…

in the Holy Spirit

These qualities cannot be sustained by human effort alone. The indwelling Spirit strengthens, guides, and produces Christlike character in believers.

1Th 1:5 our gospel came to you not only in word,…
Rom 15:19 by the power of signs and wonders, and by the power…
Act 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes…

and in sincere love;

Genuine love is free from hypocrisy and self-interest. It seeks the good of others, promotes unity among God’s people, and reflects Christ’s sacrificial love.

Rom 12:9 Love must be sincere. Detest what is evil;…
1Pe 1:22 Since you have purified your souls by obedience to the truth…
1Jn 3:18 Little children, let us love not in word and speech…

in truthful speech

Paul’s ministry was marked by honesty in proclaiming the gospel, without manipulation or deceit. His message faithfully presented Christ, His death, and His resurrection, in contrast to those who altered the truth for influence or gain.

2Co 2:17 For we are not like so many others, who peddle the word of God…
Eph 4:25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood…
Col 3:9 Do not lie to one another, since you have taken off…

and in the power of God;

The fruit of Paul’s work came through God’s strength rather than human skill. God empowered him to endure hardship, preach boldly, and confirm the gospel through the work of the Holy Spirit.

2Co 4:7 Now we have this treasure in jars of clay…
Rom 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power…
1Co 2:4 My message and my preaching were not with persuasive words…

with the weapons of righteousness

Paul portrays ministry as spiritual warfare. God supplies righteous means of defense and advance against sin, error, and opposition, not through force or worldly tactics but through faithful obedience to Him.

2Co 10:4 The weapons of our warfare are not the weapons of the flesh.…
Rom 6:13 Do not present the parts of your body to sin…
Eph 6:14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth,…

in the right hand and in the left;

The image conveys complete readiness. Like a soldier equipped for battle, Paul was prepared to meet every circumstance with the resources God provided.

1Ch 12:2 they were archers using both the right and left hands…
Neh 4:17 who were rebuilding the wall. The laborers…
Jdg 20:16 Among all these soldiers there were 700 select left-handers…

through glory and dishonor,

The apostles received honor from those who believed the gospel and saw its power in transformed lives. At the same time, opponents treated them with contempt, rejection, and persecution. Their ministry followed the pattern of Christ, who was received by some and despised by others.

1Co 4:10 We are fools for Christ, but you are wise in Christ.…
2Ti 2:20-21 A large house contains not only vessels of gold and silver……
Rom 9:21-23 Does not the potter have the right to make…

slander and praise;

False charges and hostile reports often accompanied the spread of the gospel, especially from leaders who viewed the message as a threat. Yet believers who came to faith recognized the truth of the apostles’ teaching and gave thanks for their labor.

1Co 4:13 when we are slandered, we answer gently.…
1Co 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time;…
1Pe 2:12 Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles…

viewed as imposters, yet genuine;

Critics accused Paul and his fellow workers of deceiving people and promoting a false message. Their conduct, endurance in suffering, faithful proclamation of Christ, and the churches established through their ministry demonstrated that they were true servants of God.

2Co 11:13-15 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers…
2Co 2:17 For we are not like so many others, who peddle the word of God…
2Co 4:2 Instead, we have renounced secret and shameful ways.…

unknown, yet well-known;

Paul and his fellow laborers held little status in the Roman world and were often misunderstood or ignored by the public. Yet they were known by the churches they served and, above all, by God. Their ministry did not depend on public honor but on faithful service to Christ.

Gal 4:9 But now that you know God, or rather are known by God,…
2Ti 2:19 Nevertheless, God’s firm foundation stands…
1Co 8:3 But the one who loves God is known by God.

dying, and yet we live on;

Constant hardship, persecution, and danger placed the apostles near death repeatedly. God nevertheless preserved them for continued ministry, displaying His power through their weakness and sustaining them with the hope of resurrection life.

2Co 1:8-10 We do not want you to be unaware, brothers,…
2Co 4:10-11 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus,…
Rom 6:8-9 Now if we died with Christ, we believe…

punished, yet not killed;

Beatings, imprisonment, and other sufferings marked apostolic ministry, but their enemies could not take their lives apart from God’s purpose. Though afflicted, they remained under His care and continued proclaiming the gospel.

Psa 118:18 The LORD disciplined me severely, but He has not given me over…
Pro 3:11-12 My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD,…
Heb 12:5-6 And you have forgotten the exhortation…

sorrowful, yet always rejoicing;

Paul’s ministry brought beatings, imprisonment, opposition, and deep concern for the churches, yet his joy rested in Christ’s victory and the certainty of eternal life. His circumstances changed, but the hope given by God did not.

2Co 7:4 Great is my confidence in you; great is my pride in you;…
1Pe 1:6-8 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while…
Jas 1:2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials…

poor, yet making many rich;

Though Paul often lived with little and supported himself through labor, he brought the message of salvation to those who heard him. Through the gospel, many received forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and the promised inheritance of His kingdom.

2Co 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,…
1Co 1:5 For in Him you have been enriched in every way,…
Eph 3:8 Though I am less than the least of all the saints…

having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

Paul held few earthly possessions, but in Christ he belonged to God and shared in all that God had promised. His life showed that lasting wealth is not measured by material security but by fellowship with Christ and the hope of resurrection.

1Co 3:21-23 Therefore, stop boasting in men. All things are yours,…
Rom 8:17 And if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God…
Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,…

We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians.

Paul reminds the church that he has dealt with them openly and truthfully. Though some questioned his ministry and listened to false teachers, he had withheld neither correction nor affection. His words arose from his responsibility as Christ’s apostle and from his concern for believers living in a city marked by wealth, idolatry, and sexual immorality.

2Co 3:12 Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold.
Act 20:20 I did not shrink back from declaring anything…
1Th 2:2 As you are aware, we had already endured suffering…

Our hearts are open wide.

Paul and his companions still held deep love for the Corinthians despite the strain in their relationship. They were ready to receive the church fully and sought reconciliation rather than distance. The obstacle was not a lack of affection from Paul, but the Corinthians’ need to respond to his ministry with the same openness.

2Co 7:2 Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one…
2Co 7:3 I do not say this to condemn you. I have said before that you so occupy…
1Th 2:8 We cared so deeply that we were delighted to share…

It is not our affection,

Paul assures the Corinthian believers that neither he nor his fellow workers had withheld love from them. Despite criticism and strained relations, his ministry toward them remained open, sincere, and marked by paternal concern.

2Co 7:3 I do not say this to condemn you. I have said before that you so occupy…
1Th 2:8 We cared so deeply that we were delighted to share…
Php 1:8 God is my witness how I long for all of you…

but yours,

The distance between Paul and the church did not arise from any coldness on his part. Many in Corinth had allowed divisions, worldly attitudes, and suspicion of Paul’s authority to limit their response to him.

2Co 12:15 And for the sake of your souls, I will most gladly…
1Jn 3:17 If anyone with earthly possessions sees his brother in need…
Mat 24:12 Because of the multiplication of wickedness…

that is restrained.

Their hearts had become narrowed toward the apostle and the gospel he preached. Paul calls them to recognize this barrier and to respond with the openness and affection fitting for those joined together in Christ.

2Co 7:2 Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one…
Pro 4:12 When you walk, your steps will not be impeded;…
Psa 18:19 He brought me out into the open; He rescued me…

As a fair exchange—

Paul asks the Corinthians to respond to the love and openness he and his coworkers have shown them. Though strained by criticism and the influence of false teachers, his relationship with the church remained marked by sincere concern and a desire for their restoration.

1Co 9:11-12 If we have sown spiritual seed among you, …
2Co 8:13-14 It is not our intention that others may be relieved,…
Rom 15:27 They were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it.…

I speak as to my children—

As the one who first brought the gospel to Corinth and helped establish the church, Paul speaks with the affection and authority of a spiritual father. His appeal is not harsh but personal, seeking their maturity and faithfulness to Christ.

1Co 4:14-15 I am not writing this to shame you, but to warn you…
Gal 4:19 My children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth…
1Th 2:11 For you know that we treated each of you as a father…

open wide your hearts also.

The Corinthians had become restrained in their affection toward Paul, not because he had withheld love, but because their hearts had been influenced by suspicion and competing voices. He calls them to renewed trust, reconciliation, and the mutual love fitting for those united in Christ.

2Co 7:2-3 Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one…
Pro 23:26 My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes delight…
Php 1:8 God is my witness how I long for all of you…

Do Not Be Unequally Yoked

Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.

A yoke joined two animals for a shared task. God’s law forbade yoking an ox and a donkey together, since their differing strength and gait made them unsuitable partners. Paul applies the image to binding alliances that place believers under a shared spiritual direction with those who reject Christ. Marriage, worship, and partnerships requiring moral compromise cannot be governed by two opposing loyalties.

Deu 22:10 Do not plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together.
Amo 3:3 Can two walk together without agreeing where to go?
1Co 15:33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good character.”

For what partnership can righteousness have with wickedness?

Those made righteous through Christ are called to live under God’s rule, while wickedness resists His authority. A lasting partnership cannot remain sound when one party seeks obedience and the other follows values contrary to God’s commands.

Heb 1:9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;…
Eph 5:7 Therefore do not be partakers with them.
1Jn 3:7-10 Little children, let no one deceive you:…

Or what fellowship does light have with darkness?

Light exposes what darkness conceals. Christ is the light of the world, and those who belong to Him have been brought from spiritual darkness into truth. They are not to join themselves to practices or commitments shaped by unbelief, sin, and opposition to God.

1Jn 1:5-7 And this is the message we have heard from Him…
Jhn 3:19-21 And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world……
Eph 5:8-11 For you were once darkness, but now you are light…

What harmony is there between Christ and Belial?

Christ is perfectly holy and righteous; Belial represents rebellion, wickedness, and opposition to God. No true fellowship or agreement can exist between them. Paul’s question exposes the impossibility of joining devotion to Christ with participation in evil.

1Co 10:21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons…
Jhn 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry…
2Co 11:14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades…

Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?

Those who belong to Christ are called to live under His authority, while unbelievers remain outside that commitment. Paul warns against binding relationships that compromise obedience to God or place believers under influences opposed to the faith. The distinction requires spiritual integrity, not withdrawal from the world.

1Jn 3:10 By this the children of God are distinguished…
Jhn 15:19 If you were of the world, it would love you as its own…
Eph 5:7 Therefore do not be partakers with them.

What agreement can exist between the temple of God and idols?

Corinth’s public life was saturated with pagan worship, and believers faced continual pressure to participate in practices connected with false gods. God does not share His worship with idols or with the immorality often associated with their temples. Those who belong to Him cannot treat idolatry as compatible with faithful devotion to the Lord.

1Co 10:21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons…
2Ki 21:4-7 Manasseh also built altars in the house of the LORD…
2Ki 23:4-5 Then the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest…

For we are the temple of the living God.

The church, made up of all true believers, is God’s dwelling place through the Holy Spirit. Unlike lifeless idols fashioned by human hands, the living God is present among His people and claims them as His own.

1Co 3:16-17 Do you not know that you yourselves are God’s temple……
Eph 2:21-22 In Him the whole building is fitted together…
1Pe 2:5 you also, like living stones, are being built…

As God has said: “I will dwell with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be My people.”

God’s covenant purpose has always been to live among a people set apart for Himself. What was pictured in Israel’s tabernacle and temple is now fulfilled in the gathered people of Christ, and it will reach its final completion when God dwells openly with His people forever.

Lev 26:11-12 And I will make My dwelling place among you,…
Ezk 37:27 My dwelling place will be with them; I will be their God…
Rev 21:3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying:…

“Therefore come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord.

Paul calls believers to refuse alliances and practices that compromise loyalty to God. Corinth’s idolatry and moral corruption made this separation necessary, not as withdrawal from society but as a clear refusal to participate in sin. God’s people are to live differently while remaining present in the world.

Jer 51:45 Come out of her, My people! Save your lives…
Rev 18:4 Then I heard another voice from heaven say:…
Lev 20:26 You are to be holy to Me because I, the LORD, am holy,…

Touch no unclean thing,

The language recalls Israel’s need to avoid ceremonial defilement, now applied to moral and spiritual corruption. Believers must reject idolatry, immorality, and every practice that contradicts the holiness God requires.

Lev 5:3 Or if he touches human uncleanness—even if he is unaware…
Hag 2:13 So Haggai asked, “If one who is defiled by contact”…
Lev 11:8 You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses;…

and I will receive you.”

God promises fellowship with those who turn from defilement and belong to Him. Through Christ, believers are reconciled to God and received as His people.

Jhn 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back…
Ezk 20:41 When I bring you from the peoples and gather you…
Rom 15:7 Accept one another, just as Christ accepted you,…

And:

Paul continues the call for believers to separate from idolatry and spiritual compromise, grounding that command in God’s covenant commitment to His people.

Lev 26:12 I will walk among you and be your God,…
Jer 31:33 “But this is the covenant I will make”…
Ezk 37:27 My dwelling place will be with them; I will be their God…

“I will be a Father to you,

God promises the care, authority, protection, and provision of a true Father, drawing His people into a personal covenant relationship.

2Sa 7:14 I will be his Father, and he will be My son.…
1Ch 17:13 I will be his Father, and he will be My son.…
Heb 1:5 For to which of the angels did God ever say:…

and you will be My sons and daughters,

Those who belong to Christ are received into God’s family as His children. The inclusion of sons and daughters affirms that all believers share fully in this relationship and inheritance.

Isa 43:6 I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’…
Hos 1:10 Yet the number of the Israelites will be like the sand…
Deu 14:1 You are sons of the LORD your God; do not cut yourselves…

says the Lord Almighty.”

The One making this promise is the sovereign ruler over all things, fully able to preserve His people and fulfill every covenant promise.

2Sa 7:8 Now then, you are to tell My servant David…
1Ch 17:7 Now then, you are to tell My servant David…
Mal 3:17 They will be Mine,” says the LORD of Hosts…
