“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged.1Μὴ κρίνετε ἵνα μὴ κριθῆτε
For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.2ἐν γὰρ κρίματι κρίνετε κριθήσεσθε καὶ ἐν μέτρῳ μετρεῖτε μετρηθήσεται ὑμῖν
“And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own?3Τί δὲ βλέπεις τὸ κάρφος τὸ ἐν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου τὴν δὲ ἐν τῷ σῷ ὀφθαλμῷ δοκὸν οὐ κατανοεῖς
How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye?4 πῶς ἐρεῖς τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου Ἄφες ἐκβάλω τὸ κάρφος ἐκ τοῦ ὀφθαλμοῦ σου καὶ ἰδοὺ δοκὸς ἐν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ σοῦ
Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.5ὑποκριτά ἔκβαλε πρῶτον ἐκ τοῦ ὀφθαλμοῦ σοῦ τὴν δοκόν καὶ τότε διαβλέψεις ἐκβαλεῖν τὸ κάρφος ἐκ τοῦ ὀφθαλμοῦ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου
“Don’t waste what is holy on people who are unholy. Don’t throw your pearls to pigs! They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you. Effective Prayer6Μὴ δῶτε τὸ ἅγιον τοῖς κυσίν μηδὲ βάλητε τοὺς μαργαρίτας ὑμῶν ἔμπροσθεν τῶν χοίρων μή‿ ποτε καταπατήσουσιν αὐτοὺς ἐν τοῖς ποσὶν αὐτῶν καὶ στραφέντες ῥήξωσιν ὑμᾶς
“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.7Αἰτεῖτε καὶ δοθήσεται ὑμῖν ζητεῖτε καὶ εὑρήσετε κρούετε καὶ ἀνοιγήσεται ὑμῖν
For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.8πᾶς γὰρ αἰτῶν λαμβάνει καὶ ζητῶν εὑρίσκει καὶ τῷ κρούοντι ἀνοιγήσεται
“You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead?9 τίς ἐστιν ἐξ ὑμῶν ἄνθρωπος ὃν αἰτήσει υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἄρτον μὴ λίθον ἐπιδώσει αὐτῷ
Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not!10 καὶ ἰχθὺν αἰτήσει μὴ ὄφιν ἐπιδώσει αὐτῷ
So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.
“Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. The Narrow Gate12Πάντα οὖν ὅσα ἐὰν θέλητε ἵνα ποιῶσιν ὑμῖν οἱ ἄνθρωποι οὕτως καὶ ὑμεῖς ποιεῖτε αὐτοῖς οὗτος γάρ ἐστιν νόμος καὶ οἱ προφῆται
“You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way.13Εἰσέλθατε διὰ τῆς στενῆς πύλης ὅτι πλατεῖα πύλη καὶ εὐρύχωρος ὁδὸς ἀπάγουσα εἰς τὴν ἀπώλειαν καὶ πολλοί εἰσιν οἱ εἰσερχόμενοι δι’ αὐτῆς
But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it. The Tree and Its Fruit14ὅτι στενὴ πύλη καὶ τεθλιμμένη ὁδὸς ἀπάγουσα εἰς τὴν ζωήν καὶ ὀλίγοι εἰσὶν οἱ εὑρίσκοντες αὐτήν
“Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves.15Προσέχετε ἀπὸ τῶν ψευδοπροφητῶν οἵτινες ἔρχονται πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐν ἐνδύμασιν προβάτων ἔσωθεν δέ εἰσιν λύκοι ἅρπαγες
You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?16ἀπὸ τῶν καρπῶν αὐτῶν ἐπιγνώσεσθε αὐτούς μήτι συλλέγουσιν ἀπὸ ἀκανθῶν σταφυλὰς ἀπὸ τριβόλων σῦκα
A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit.17οὕτως πᾶν δένδρον ἀγαθὸν καρποὺς καλοὺς ποιεῖ τὸ δὲ σαπρὸν δένδρον καρποὺς πονηροὺς ποιεῖ
A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit.18οὐ δύναται δένδρον ἀγαθὸν καρποὺς πονηροὺς ποιεῖν* οὐδὲ δένδρον σαπρὸν καρποὺς καλοὺς ποιεῖν*
So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire.19πᾶν δένδρον μὴ ποιοῦν καρπὸν καλὸν ἐκκόπτεται καὶ εἰς πῦρ βάλλεται
Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.
“Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter.21Οὐ πᾶς λέγων μοι Κύριε Κύριε εἰσελεύσεται εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν ἀλλ’ ποιῶν τὸ θέλημα τοῦ Πατρός μου τοῦ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς
On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’22πολλοὶ ἐροῦσίν μοι ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ Κύριε Κύριε οὐ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι ἐπροφητεύσαμεν καὶ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι δαιμόνια ἐξεβάλομεν καὶ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι δυνάμεις πολλὰς ἐποιήσαμεν
But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’
“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.24Πᾶς οὖν ὅστις ἀκούει μου τοὺς λόγους τούτους καὶ ποιεῖ αὐτούς ὁμοιωθήσεται ἀνδρὶ φρονίμῳ ὅστις ᾠκοδόμησεν αὐτοῦ τὴν οἰκίαν ἐπὶ τὴν πέτραν
Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.25καὶ κατέβη βροχὴ καὶ ἦλθον οἱ ποταμοὶ καὶ ἔπνευσαν οἱ ἄνεμοι καὶ προσέπεσαν τῇ οἰκίᾳ ἐκείνῃ καὶ οὐκ ἔπεσεν τεθεμελίωτο γὰρ ἐπὶ τὴν πέτραν
But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand.26καὶ πᾶς ἀκούων μου τοὺς λόγους τούτους καὶ μὴ ποιῶν αὐτοὺς ὁμοιωθήσεται ἀνδρὶ μωρῷ ὅστις ᾠκοδόμησεν αὐτοῦ τὴν οἰκίαν ἐπὶ τὴν ἄμμον
When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”27καὶ κατέβη βροχὴ καὶ ἦλθον οἱ ποταμοὶ καὶ ἔπνευσαν οἱ ἄνεμοι καὶ προσέκοψαν τῇ οἰκίᾳ ἐκείνῃ καὶ ἔπεσεν καὶ ἦν πτῶσις αὐτῆς μεγάλη
When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching,28Καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε ἐτέλεσεν Ἰησοῦς τοὺς λόγους τούτους ἐξεπλήσσοντο οἱ ὄχλοι ἐπὶ τῇ διδαχῇ αὐτοῦ
for he taught with real authority—quite unlike their teachers of religious law.29ἦν γὰρ διδάσκων αὐτοὺς ὡς ἐξουσίαν ἔχων καὶ οὐχ ὡς οἱ γραμματεῖς αὐτῶν
