The Parable of the Sower
(Matthew 13:1–9; Luke 8:4–8)

1  Καὶ (And) πάλιν (again) ἤρξατο (He began) διδάσκειν (to teach) παρὰ (beside) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea). καὶ (and) συνάγεται (gathered together) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) ὄχλος (a crowd) πλεῖστος (very great), ὥστε (so that) αὐτὸν (He) εἰς (into) πλοῖον (a boat) ἐμβάντα (having entered) καθῆσθαι (sat down) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) θαλάσσῃ (sea), καὶ (and) πᾶς (all) (the) ὄχλος (crowd) πρὸς (close to) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (land) ἦσαν (was).

2  Καὶ (And) ἐδίδασκεν (He was teaching) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐν (in) παραβολαῖς (parables) πολλά (many things), καὶ (and) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) διδαχῇ (teaching) αὐτοῦ (of Him)· 3  Ἀκούετε (Listen). ἰδοὺ (Behold) ἐξῆλθεν (went out) (the one) σπείρων (sowing) σπεῖραι (to sow). 4  καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σπείρειν (sowing) (that some) μὲν (indeed) ἔπεσεν (fell) παρὰ (along) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (path), καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (came) τὰ (the) πετεινὰ (birds) καὶ (and) κατέφαγεν (devoured) αὐτό (it).

5  Καὶ (And) ἄλλο (other) ἔπεσεν (fell) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸ (the) πετρῶδες (rocky place) ὅπου (where) οὐκ (not) εἶχεν (it had) γῆν (soil) πολλήν (much), καὶ (and) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἐξανέτειλεν (it sprang up) διὰ (because of) τὸ (-) μὴ (it not) ἔχειν (having) βάθος (depth) γῆς (of soil)· 6  καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἀνέτειλεν (rose) (the) ἥλιος (sun) ἐκαυματίσθη (it was scorched), καὶ (and) διὰ (because of) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) ἔχειν (having) ῥίζαν (root) ἐξηράνθη (it withered).

7  Καὶ (And) ἄλλο (other) ἔπεσεν (fell) εἰς (among) τὰς (the) ἀκάνθας (thorns), καὶ (and) ἀνέβησαν (came up) αἱ (the) ἄκανθαι (thorns) καὶ (and) συνέπνιξαν (choked) αὐτό (it), καὶ (and) καρπὸν (fruit) οὐκ (no) ἔδωκεν (it gave).

8  Καὶ (And) ἄλλα (others) ἔπεσεν (fell) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) γῆν (soil) τὴν (-) καλήν (good), καὶ (and) ἐδίδου (it was giving) καρπὸν (fruit) ἀναβαίνοντα (coming up) καὶ (and) αὐξανόμενα (increasing), καὶ (and) ἔφερεν (bearing) ἓν (one) τριάκοντα (thirtyfold) καὶ (and) ἓν (one) ἑξήκοντα (sixty) καὶ (and) ἓν (one) ἑκατόν (a hundred).

9  Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying)· Ὃς (He who) ἔχει (has) ὦτα (ears) ἀκούειν (to hear) ἀκουέτω (let him hear).

The Purpose of Jesus’ Parables
(Isaiah 6:1–13; Matthew 13:10–17; Luke 8:9–10)

10  Καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἐγένετο (He was) κατὰ (-) μόνας (alone), ἠρώτων (were asking) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (those) περὶ (around) αὐτὸν (Him) σὺν (with) τοῖς (the) δώδεκα (Twelve) τὰς (about the) παραβολάς (parables).

11  Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ὑμῖν (To you⁺) τὸ (the) μυστήριον (mystery) δέδοται (has been given) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)· ἐκείνοις (To those) δὲ (however) τοῖς (who are) ἔξω (outside) ἐν (in) παραβολαῖς (parables) τὰ (-) πάντα (everything) γίνεται (is done), 12  ἵνα (so that)·

Βλέποντες (Seeing) βλέπωσιν (they might see) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἴδωσιν (perceive),

Καὶ (and) ἀκούοντες (hearing) ἀκούωσιν (they might hear) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) συνιῶσιν (understand),

Μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) ἐπιστρέψωσιν (they might return)

Καὶ (and) ἀφεθῇ (might be forgiven) αὐτοῖς (them).

The Parable of the Sower Explained
(Matthew 13:18–23; Luke 8:11–15)

13  Καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (you⁺ know) τὴν (the) παραβολὴν (parable) ταύτην (this), καὶ (And) πῶς (how) πάσας (all) τὰς (the) παραβολὰς (parables) γνώσεσθε (will you⁺ know)?

14  (The one) σπείρων (sowing) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) σπείρει (sows). 15  οὗτοι (These) δέ (now) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (the ones) παρὰ (along) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (path) ὅπου (where) σπείρεται (is sown) (the) λόγος (word), καὶ (and) ὅταν (when) ἀκούσωσιν (they hear) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἔρχεται (comes) (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan) καὶ (and) αἴρει (takes away) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τὸν (-) ἐσπαρμένον (sown) εἰς (in) αὐτούς (them).

16  Καὶ (And) οὗτοί (these) εἰσιν (are) ὁμοίως (likewise) οἱ (those) ἐπὶ (upon) τὰ (the) πετρώδη (rocky places) σπειρόμενοι (sown), οἳ (who) ὅταν (when) ἀκούσωσιν (they hear) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) εὐθὺς (immediately) μετὰ (with) χαρᾶς (joy) λαμβάνουσιν (receive) αὐτόν (it), 17  καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἔχουσιν (they have) ῥίζαν (root) ἐν (in) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves) ἀλλὰ (but) πρόσκαιροί (temporary) εἰσιν (are), εἶτα (then) γενομένης (on having arisen) θλίψεως (tribulation) (or) διωγμοῦ (persecution) διὰ (because of) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) εὐθὺς (immediately) σκανδαλίζονται (they are caused to stumble).

18  Καὶ (And) ἄλλοι (others) εἰσὶν (are) οἱ (the ones) εἰς (among) τὰς (the) ἀκάνθας (thorns) σπειρόμενοι (sown)· οὗτοί (These) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (the ones) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) ἀκούσαντες (having heard), 19  καὶ (and) αἱ (the) μέριμναι (anxieties) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age) καὶ (and) (the) ἀπάτη (deceit) τοῦ (of the) πλούτου (riches) καὶ (and) αἱ (-) περὶ (concerning) τὰ (the) λοιπὰ (other things) ἐπιθυμίαι (desires) εἰσπορευόμεναι (entering) συμπνίγουσιν (choke) τὸν (the) λόγον (word), καὶ (and) ἄκαρπος (unfruitful) γίνεται (it becomes).

20  Καὶ (And) ἐκεῖνοί (those) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (the ones) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) γῆν (soil) τὴν (-) καλὴν (good) σπαρέντες (having been sown), οἵτινες (such as) ἀκούουσιν (hear) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) καὶ (and) παραδέχονται (receive it) καὶ (and) καρποφοροῦσιν (bear fruit) ἓν (one) τριάκοντα (thirtyfold) καὶ (and) ἓν (one) ἑξήκοντα (sixty) καὶ (and) ἓν (one) ἑκατόν (a hundred).

The Lesson of the Lamp

21  Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὅτι (-)· Μήτι (Not) ἔρχεται (comes) (the) λύχνος (lamp) ἵνα (so that) ὑπὸ (under) τὸν (the) μόδιον (basket) τεθῇ (it might be put) (or) ὑπὸ (under) τὴν (the) κλίνην (bed)? οὐχ (Is it not) ἵνα (so that) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) λυχνίαν (lampstand) τεθῇ (it might be put)? 22  οὐ (Nothing) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (there is) τι (that is) κρυπτὸν (hidden), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἵνα (so that) φανερωθῇ (it should be made manifest)· οὐδὲ (nor) ἐγένετο (was anything) ἀπόκρυφον (hidden away), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (so that) ἔλθῃ (it should come) εἰς (to) φανερόν (be manifest).

23  Εἴ (If) τις (anyone) ἔχει (has) ὦτα (ears) ἀκούειν (to hear), ἀκουέτω (let him hear).

24  Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Βλέπετε (Look at) τί (what) ἀκούετε (you⁺ hear). ἐν (With) (what) μέτρῳ (measure) μετρεῖτε (you⁺ measure) μετρηθήσεται (it will be measured) ὑμῖν (to you⁺), καὶ (and) προστεθήσεται (it will be added) ὑμῖν (to you⁺). 25  ὃς (Whoever) γὰρ (for) ἔχει (has), δοθήσεται (it will be given) αὐτῷ (to him)· καὶ (and) ὃς (whoever) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has), καὶ (even) (what) ἔχει (he has) ἀρθήσεται (will be taken away) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him).

26  Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying)· Οὕτως (Thus) ἐστὶν (is) (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὡς (as) ἄνθρωπος (a man) βάλῃ (may cast) τὸν (the) σπόρον (seed) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), 27  καὶ (and) καθεύδῃ (may sleep) καὶ (and) ἐγείρηται (rise) νύκτα (night) καὶ (and) ἡμέραν (day), καὶ (and) (the) σπόρος (seed) βλαστᾷ (may sprout) καὶ (and) μηκύνηται (grow) ὡς (how) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (knows) αὐτός (he). 28  αὐτομάτη (Of itself) (the) γῆ (earth) καρποφορεῖ (bears fruit), πρῶτον (first) χόρτον (a plant), εἶτα (then) στάχυν (an ear), εἶτα (then) πλήρης (full) σῖτον (grain) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) στάχυϊ (ear). 29  ὅταν (When) δὲ (then) παραδοῖ (may offer itself) (the) καρπός (fruit), εὐθὺς (immediately) ἀποστέλλει (he sends) τὸ (the) δρέπανον (sickle), ὅτι (because) παρέστηκεν (has come) (the) θερισμός (harvest).

The Parable of the Mustard Seed
(Matthew 13:31–32; Luke 13:18–19)

30  Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying)· Πῶς (To what) ὁμοιώσωμεν (shall we liken) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), (Or) ἐν (in) τίνι (what) αὐτὴν (it) παραβολῇ (parable) θῶμεν (shall we put)? 31  ὡς (It is like) κόκκῳ (a grain) σινάπεως (of mustard), ὃς (which) ὅταν (when) σπαρῇ (it may be sown) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), μικρότερον (smallest) ὂν (is) πάντων (of all) τῶν (the) σπερμάτων (seeds) τῶν (that are) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), 32  καὶ (And) ὅταν (when) σπαρῇ (it may be sown), ἀναβαίνει (it comes up) καὶ (and) γίνεται (becomes) μεῖζον (greater) πάντων (than all) τῶν (the) λαχάνων (garden plants), καὶ (and) ποιεῖ (makes) κλάδους (branches) μεγάλους (great), ὥστε (so that) δύνασθαι (are able) ὑπὸ (under) τὴν (the) σκιὰν (shadow) αὐτοῦ (of it) τὰ (the) πετεινὰ (birds) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (sky) κατασκηνοῦν (to lodge).

33  Καὶ (And) τοιαύταις (with such) παραβολαῖς (parables) πολλαῖς (many) ἐλάλει (He was speaking) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὸν (the) λόγον (word), καθὼς (as) ἠδύναντο (they were able) ἀκούειν (to hear)· 34  χωρὶς (Without) δὲ (then) παραβολῆς (a parable) οὐκ (not) ἐλάλει (was He speaking) αὐτοῖς (to them), κατ’ (in) ἰδίαν (private) δὲ (however) τοῖς (to His) ἰδίοις (own) μαθηταῖς (disciples) ἐπέλυεν (He was explaining) πάντα (all things).

39  Καὶ (And) διεγερθεὶς (having been awoken) ἐπετίμησεν (He rebuked) τῷ (the) ἀνέμῳ (wind) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) τῇ (to the) θαλάσσῃ (sea)· Σιώπα (Silence), πεφίμωσο (be still). καὶ (And) ἐκόπασεν (abated) (the) ἄνεμος (wind), καὶ (and) ἐγένετο (there was) γαλήνη (a calm) μεγάλη (great).
