The Parable of the Lost Sheep
(Matthew 18:10–14)
1 Ἦσαν (Were) δὲ (now) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἐγγίζοντες (drawing near) πάντες (all) οἱ (the) τελῶναι (tax collectors) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἁμαρτωλοὶ (sinners) ἀκούειν (to hear) αὐτοῦ (Him).
2 καὶ (And) διεγόγγυζον (were grumbling) οἵ (the) τε (both) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-) Οὗτος (This man) ἁμαρτωλοὺς (sinners) προσδέχεται (receives) καὶ (and) συνεσθίει (eats with) αὐτοῖς (them).
3 Εἶπεν (He spoke) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) τὴν (the) παραβολὴν (parable) ταύτην (this) λέγων (saying)·
4 Τίς (What) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you⁺) ἔχων (having) ἑκατὸν (a hundred) πρόβατα (sheep) καὶ (and) ἀπολέσας (having lost) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) ἓν (one) οὐ (not) καταλείπει (leaves) τὰ (the) ἐνενήκοντα (ninety) ἐννέα (nine) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness) καὶ (and) πορεύεται (goes) ἐπὶ (after) τὸ (the) ἀπολωλὸς (lost one) ἕως (until) εὕρῃ (he should find) αὐτό (it)?
5 καὶ (And) εὑρὼν (having found it) ἐπιτίθησιν (he lays it) ἐπὶ (on) τοὺς (the) ὤμους (shoulders) αὐτοῦ (of him) χαίρων (rejoicing),
6 καὶ (And) ἐλθὼν (having come) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) συνκαλεῖ (he calls together) τοὺς (the) φίλους (friends) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) γείτονας (neighbors), λέγων (saying) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Συνχάρητέ (Rejoice with) μοι (me), ὅτι (because) εὗρον (I found) τὸ (the) πρόβατόν (sheep) μου (of me) τὸ (the) ἀπολωλός (lost one).
7 λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὅτι (that) οὕτως (thus) χαρὰ (joy) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven) ἔσται (there will be) ἐπὶ (over) ἑνὶ (one) ἁμαρτωλῷ (sinner) μετανοοῦντι (repenting) ἢ (rather than) ἐπὶ (over) ἐνενήκοντα (ninety) ἐννέα (nine) δικαίοις (righteous ones) οἵτινες (who) οὐ (no) χρείαν (need) ἔχουσιν (have) μετανοίας (of repentance).

8 Ἢ (Or) τίς (what) γυνὴ (woman) δραχμὰς (drachmas) ἔχουσα (having) δέκα (ten), ἐὰν (if) ἀπολέσῃ (she should lose) δραχμὴν (drachma) μίαν (one), οὐχὶ (not) ἅπτει (lights) λύχνον (a lamp) καὶ (and) σαροῖ (sweeps) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house) καὶ (and) ζητεῖ (seeks) ἐπιμελῶς (carefully) ἕως (until) οὗ (it) εὕρῃ (she should find)?
9 καὶ (And) εὑροῦσα (having found it) συνκαλεῖ (she calls together) τὰς (the) φίλας (friends) καὶ (and) γείτονας (neighbors) λέγουσα (saying)· Συνχάρητέ (Rejoice with) μοι (me), ὅτι (for) εὗρον (I found) τὴν (the) δραχμὴν (drachma) ἣν (that) ἀπώλεσα (I lost).
10 οὕτως (Thus), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺), γίνεται (there is) χαρὰ (joy) ἐνώπιον (before) τῶν (the) ἀγγέλων (angels) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐπὶ (over) ἑνὶ (one) ἁμαρτωλῷ (sinner) μετανοοῦντι (repenting).

(Deuteronomy 21:18–21)
11 Εἶπεν (He said) δέ (then)· Ἄνθρωπός (A man) τις (certain) εἶχεν (had) δύο (two) υἱούς (sons).
12 καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) ὁ (the) νεώτερος (younger) αὐτῶν (of them) τῷ (to the) πατρί (father)· Πάτερ (Father), δός (give) μοι (to me) τὸ (the) ἐπιβάλλον (falling to me) μέρος (portion) τῆς (of the) οὐσίας (substance). ὁ (-) δὲ (And) διεῖλεν (he divided) αὐτοῖς (between them) τὸν (the) βίον (livelihood).
13 Καὶ (And) μετ’ (after) οὐ (not) πολλὰς (many) ἡμέρας (days) συναγαγὼν (having gathered together) πάντα (all) ὁ (the) νεώτερος (younger) υἱὸς (son) ἀπεδήμησεν (went away) εἰς (into) χώραν (a country) μακράν (far), καὶ (and) ἐκεῖ (there) διεσκόρπισεν (he scattered) τὴν (the) οὐσίαν (substance) αὐτοῦ (of him) ζῶν (living) ἀσώτως (prodigally).
14 Δαπανήσαντος (Having spent) δὲ (however) αὐτοῦ (of him) πάντα (all) ἐγένετο (there was) λιμὸς (a famine) ἰσχυρὰ (strong) κατὰ (throughout) τὴν (the) χώραν (country) ἐκείνην (that), καὶ (and) αὐτὸς (he) ἤρξατο (began) ὑστερεῖσθαι (to lack).
15 καὶ (And) πορευθεὶς (having gone) ἐκολλήθη (he joined himself) ἑνὶ (to one) τῶν (of the) πολιτῶν (citizens) τῆς (the) χώρας (country) ἐκείνης (of that), καὶ (and) ἔπεμψεν (he sent) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (into) τοὺς (the) ἀγροὺς (fields) αὐτοῦ (of him) βόσκειν (to feed) χοίρους (pigs)·
16 καὶ (And) ἐπεθύμει (he was desiring) γεμίσαι (to fill) τὴν (the) κοιλίαν (belly) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) κερατίων (pods) ὧν (that) ἤσθιον (were eating) οἱ (the) χοῖροι (pigs), καὶ (and) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἐδίδου (was giving) αὐτῷ (to him). autō
17 Εἰς (To) ἑαυτὸν (himself) δὲ (however) ἐλθὼν (having come) ἔφη (he was saying)· Πόσοι (How many) μίσθιοι (hired men) τοῦ (of the) πατρός (father) μου (of me) περισσεύονται (have an abundance) ἄρτων (of loaves), ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λιμῷ (with hunger) ὧδε (here) ἀπόλλυμαι (am perishing).
18 ἀναστὰς (Having risen up) πορεύσομαι (I will go) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) μου (of me) καὶ (and) ἐρῶ (I will say) αὐτῷ (to him)· Πάτερ (Father), ἥμαρτον (I sinned) εἰς (against) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven) καὶ (and) ἐνώπιόν (before) σου (you),
19 οὐκέτι (no longer) εἰμὶ (am I) ἄξιος (worthy) κληθῆναι (to be called) υἱός (son) σου (of you)· ποίησόν (Make) με (me) ὡς (like) ἕνα (one) τῶν (of the) μισθίων (hired men) σου (of you).
20 Καὶ (And) ἀναστὰς (having risen up) ἦλθεν (he went) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) ἑαυτοῦ (of himself). ἔτι (Still) δὲ (however) αὐτοῦ (on his) μακρὰν (far) ἀπέχοντος (being distant) εἶδεν (saw) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (the) πατὴρ (father) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) ἐσπλαγχνίσθη (was moved with compassion), καὶ (and) δραμὼν (having run) ἐπέπεσεν (he fell) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸν (the) τράχηλον (neck) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) κατεφίλησεν (kissed) αὐτόν (him).
21 Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) αὐτῷ (to him)· Πάτερ (Father), ἥμαρτον (I sinned) εἰς (against) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven) καὶ (and) ἐνώπιόν (before) σου (you), οὐκέτι (no longer) εἰμὶ (am I) ἄξιος (worthy) κληθῆναι (to be called) υἱός (son) σου (of you).
22 Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ὁ (the) πατὴρ (father) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him)· Ταχὺ (Quickly) ἐξενέγκατε (bring out) στολὴν (robe) τὴν (the) πρώτην (best) καὶ (and) ἐνδύσατε (clothe) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) δότε (give) δακτύλιον (a ring) εἰς (for) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) ὑποδήματα (sandals) εἰς (for) τοὺς (his) πόδας (feet),
23 καὶ (and) φέρετε (having brought) τὸν (the) μόσχον (calf) τὸν (-) σιτευτόν (fattened), θύσατε (kill it), καὶ (and) φαγόντες (having eaten) εὐφρανθῶμεν (let us be merry),
24 ὅτι (because) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) υἱός (son) μου (of mine) νεκρὸς (dead) ἦν (was) καὶ (and) ἀνέζησεν (lived again), ἦν (he was) ἀπολωλὼς (lost) καὶ (and) εὑρέθη (was found). καὶ (And) ἤρξαντο (they began) εὐφραίνεσθαι (to be merry).
25 Ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) αὐτοῦ (of him) ὁ (the) πρεσβύτερος (elder) ἐν (in) ἀγρῷ (the field)· καὶ (and) ὡς (as) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἤγγισεν (he drew near) τῇ (to the) οἰκίᾳ (house), ἤκουσεν (he heard) συμφωνίας (music) καὶ (and) χορῶν (dancing),
26 καὶ (And) προσκαλεσάμενος (having summoned) ἕνα (one) τῶν (of the) παίδων (servants) ἐπυνθάνετο (he was inquiring) τί (what) ἂν (-) εἴη (might be) ταῦτα (these things).
27 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (he said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὅτι (-) Ὁ (The) ἀδελφός (brother) σου (of you) ἥκει (has come), καὶ (and) ἔθυσεν (killed) ὁ (the) πατήρ (father) σου (of you) τὸν (the) μόσχον (calf) τὸν (-) σιτευτόν (fattened), ὅτι (because) ὑγιαίνοντα (in good health) αὐτὸν (him) ἀπέλαβεν (he received back).
28 Ὠργίσθη (He was angry) δὲ (however) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἤθελεν (was willing) εἰσελθεῖν (to go in)· ὁ (-) δὲ (And) πατὴρ (the father) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐξελθὼν (having gone) παρεκάλει (was imploring) αὐτόν (him).
29 Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (he said) τῷ (to) πατρὶ (the father) αὐτοῦ (of him)· Ἰδοὺ (Behold) τοσαῦτα (so many) ἔτη (years) δουλεύω (I serve) σοι (you) καὶ (and) οὐδέποτε (never) ἐντολήν (a commandment) σου (of you) παρῆλθον (did I transgress), καὶ (and) ἐμοὶ (to me) οὐδέποτε (never) ἔδωκας (did you give) ἔριφον (a young goat) ἵνα (so that) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) φίλων (friends) μου (of me) εὐφρανθῶ (I might be merry)·
30 ὅτε (When) δὲ (however) ὁ (the) υἱός (son) σου (of you) οὗτος (this) ὁ (the one) καταφαγών (having devoured) σου (your) τὸν (-) βίον (living) μετὰ (with) πορνῶν (prostitutes) ἦλθεν (came), ἔθυσας (you killed) αὐτῷ (for him) τὸν (the) σιτευτὸν (fattened) μόσχον (calf).
31 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (he said) αὐτῷ (to him)· Τέκνον (Child), σὺ (you) πάντοτε (always) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (me) εἶ (are), καὶ (and) πάντα (all) τὰ (that) ἐμὰ (is mine) σά (yours⁺) ἐστιν (is)·
32 εὐφρανθῆναι (To be merry) δὲ (however) καὶ (and) χαρῆναι (to rejoice) ἔδει (it was fitting), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother) σου (of you) οὗτος (this) νεκρὸς (dead) ἦν (was) καὶ (and) ἔζησεν (lived again), καὶ (and) ἀπολωλὼς (he was lost) καὶ (and) εὑρέθη (was found).
