Similitudes and Instructions

Like snow in summer

Snow was rare in the heat of an Israelite summer and would have been out of season and useless.

Pro 25:13 Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest…
Job 24:19 As drought and heat consume the melting snow,…
Ecc 3:1 To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose…

and rain at harvest,

Rain during harvest could damage ripened grain and hinder its gathering, bringing loss when farmers expected provision.

1Sa 12:17-18 Is it not the wheat harvest today? I will call on the LORD…
Jer 5:24 They have not said in their hearts, ‘Let us fear the LORD…
Amo 4:7 I also withheld the rain from you when the harvest…

honor does not befit a fool.

Giving public respect or authority to a fool is equally inappropriate. A fool lacks the wisdom and character needed to use honor rightly, and elevating such a person harms the order and well-being of the community.

Psa 49:20 A man who has riches without understanding…
Pro 19:10 Luxury is unseemly for a fool—how much worse…
Pro 17:7 Eloquent words are unfit for a fool; how much worse…

Like a fluttering sparrow or darting swallow,

Small birds move quickly and unpredictably through the air, never settling where they do not belong. Their restless flight pictures a curse sent out without a rightful target or divine warrant.

Hos 9:11 Ephraim’s glory will fly away like a bird…
Psa 55:6 I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!…
Psa 11:1 In the LORD I take refuge. How then can you say to me:…

an undeserved curse

Curses were regarded seriously in Israel because words could express a genuine appeal for judgment. Yet false accusations, malicious wishes, and unjust condemnations do not overturn God’s justice or determine the fate of the innocent.

Num 23:8 How can I curse those whom God has not cursed?…
Num 23:20 I have indeed received a command to bless;…
Deu 23:5 Yet the LORD your God would not listen to Balaam,…

does not come to rest.

Like a bird that cannot find a place to land, a baseless curse does not accomplish its intended harm. God sees the truth, judges rightly, and does not permit unjust condemnation to stand.

Psa 109:28 Though they curse, You will bless. When they rise up,…
Isa 54:17 No weapon formed against you shall prosper,…
Psa 121:7-8 The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve…

A whip for the horse,

Horses were valued for war, travel, and labor, but their strength required firm direction. The whip pictures the restraint needed to bring powerful animals under control and make their strength useful.

Jas 3:3-4 When we put bits into the mouths of horses…
Job 39:19-25 Do you give strength to the horse or adorn his neck…

a bridle for the donkey,

Donkeys commonly carried loads and served as dependable beasts of burden, yet they also required guidance. A bridle directs the animal along the proper path and keeps it from resisting its task.

Psa 32:9 Do not be like the horse or mule, which have no understanding;…
Isa 37:29 Because your rage and arrogance against Me have reached…
Isa 30:28 His breath is like a rushing torrent that rises to the neck.…

and a rod for the backs of fools!

Fools reject instruction and persist in sinful, destructive conduct. As a whip and bridle correct animals, the rod represents the fitting discipline required when words and wisdom are refused.

Pro 10:13 Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning,…
Pro 19:29 Judgments are prepared for mockers, and beatings…
Pro 22:15 Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child,…

Do not answer a fool according to his folly,

A fool is not merely uninformed but stubbornly resistant to God’s wisdom and correction. Entering his quarrels on his own dishonest or contemptuous terms only gives his folly a hearing and turns the exchange into needless strife.

Pro 23:9 Do not speak to a fool, for he will despise the wisdom…
2Ti 2:23-24 But reject foolish and ignorant speculation,…
Tit 3:9 But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, arguments,…

or you yourself will be like him.

Meeting foolishness with anger, mockery, or reckless speech causes the wise person to imitate the very conduct he should reject. Wisdom preserves self-control, truthfulness, and dignity rather than being drawn into a fool’s disorder.

Pro 22:24-25 Do not make friends with an angry man,…
Pro 13:20 He who walks with the wise will become wise,…
1Co 15:33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good character.”

Answer a fool according to his folly,

A fool’s false reasoning should sometimes be answered plainly, not by adopting his manner or arguments, but by exposing their error. The preceding proverb warns against being drawn into foolish speech; this one warns against silence when silence would leave folly unchallenged. Wisdom discerns when a reply will correct the matter rather than merely prolong a quarrel.

Pro 29:9 If a wise man goes to court with a fool,…
Mat 7:6 Do not give dogs what is holy; do not…
2Ti 2:23-25 But reject foolish and ignorant speculation,…

lest he become wise in his own eyes.

Unanswered folly can strengthen a person’s confidence in his own judgment. A fitting answer reveals the weakness of his claims and restrains the pride that treats self-made opinion as wisdom.

Pro 3:7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD…
Pro 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,…
Isa 5:21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes…

Like cutting off one’s own feet

A man who maims himself loses the ability to travel, work, and carry out ordinary responsibilities. The comparison portrays the damage done when someone depends on a fool.

Pro 25:19 Like a broken tooth or a foot out of joint…
Pro 6:32 He who commits adultery lacks judgment;…
Pro 8:36 But he who fails to find me harms himself; ……

or drinking violence

Rather than receiving help, the one who sends a fool brings harm upon himself. The result is trouble that must be endured, as though he had taken violence into himself.

Pro 4:17 For they eat the bread of wickedness and…
Pro 1:16 For their feet run to evil, and they are swift…
Isa 59:7 Their feet run to evil; they are swift to shed innocent blood…

is the sending of a message by the hand of a fool.

Messages in the ancient world often carried urgent business, legal, or personal matters. A fool could neglect the task, misstate the message, or act without judgment, causing loss to the one who entrusted him.

Pro 13:17 A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy…
Pro 25:13 Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest…
Pro 10:26 Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes…

Like lame legs hanging limp

Lame legs cannot provide strength, balance, or movement. Their uselessness pictures wisdom that is present in words but absent in practice.

Pro 25:19 Like a broken tooth or a foot out of joint…
Isa 35:3 Strengthen the limp hands and steady the feeble knees!
Heb 12:13 Make straight paths for your feet, so that the lame…

is a proverb in the mouth of a fool.

A fool may repeat a wise saying, yet he neither understands its truth nor lives by it. Because his conduct contradicts the proverb, it cannot guide him or benefit those who hear him.

Pro 15:2 The tongue of the wise commends knowledge…
Pro 17:7 Eloquent words are unfit for a fool; how much worse…
Pro 18:2 A fool does not delight in understanding,…

Like binding a stone into a sling

A sling was designed to release a stone with force and accuracy. Tying the stone into it defeats its purpose and may make the weapon dangerous to its user. The image portrays an act that is useless and harmful because a tool is being employed contrary to its intended use.

1Sa 17:40 And David took his staff in his hand,…
1Sa 17:49-50 Then David reached into his bag, took out a stone,…
Jdg 20:16 Among all these soldiers there were 700 select left-handers…

is the giving of honor to a fool.

Honor grants influence, trust, and responsibility. A fool lacks the wisdom and moral restraint needed to use such standing rightly. Elevating him invites disorder, since he may misuse the authority and respect given to him.

Ecc 10:6-7 Folly is appointed to great heights…
Pro 3:35 The wise will inherit honor, but fools are held up to shame.
Pro 19:10 Luxury is unseemly for a fool—how much worse…

Like a thorn that goes into the hand of a drunkard

A drunk man may grasp or carry a thorn without noticing the danger or responding wisely to the injury. His impaired judgment leaves him unable to avoid harm or deal with it properly.

Pro 23:29-35 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions?…
Pro 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler,…
Isa 28:7-8 These also stagger from wine and stumble…

is a proverb in the mouth of a fool.

In the same way, a fool may repeat words of wisdom without understanding or applying them. The proverb remains true, but in his mouth it is misused, ignored, or turned to harmful purposes because he lacks the discernment to live by it.

Pro 17:7 Eloquent words are unfit for a fool; how much worse…
Pro 15:2 The tongue of the wise commends knowledge…
Ecc 10:12-14 The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious,…

Like an archer who wounds at random

A reckless archer endangers everyone within reach, harming without judgment or restraint. The image portrays the damage caused when power or responsibility is used carelessly.

Pro 25:18 Like a club or sword or sharp arrow is a man…
Psa 11:2 For behold, the wicked bend their bows.…
Psa 64:3-4 who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim…

is he who hires a fool or passerby.

Entrusting work to an incompetent person or an unknown drifter invites disorder and loss. A fool lacks the judgment needed to carry out responsibility, while a passerby has no commitment to the task or its outcome. Wise leadership considers character, ability, and faithfulness before placing responsibility in someone’s hands.

Pro 13:20 He who walks with the wise will become wise,…
Jhn 10:12-13 The hired hand is not the shepherd, and the sheep…
Pro 10:26 Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes…

As a dog returns to its vomit,

Dogs commonly roamed as scavengers in the ancient world, making the image deliberately revolting. What the animal returns to is harmful and defiling, yet it follows its base appetite.

2Pe 2:22 Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,”…
Mat 12:43-45 When an unclean spirit comes out of a man…
Luk 11:24-26 When an unclean spirit comes out of a man,…

so a fool repeats his folly.

A fool persists in sinful and destructive patterns despite the consequences. Rather than receiving correction and turning from error, he returns to the same rebellion, showing his need for repentance and the wisdom that comes from fearing the Lord.

Pro 13:19 Desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul…
Pro 10:23 The fool delights in shameful conduct, but…
Pro 15:21 Folly is joy to one who lacks judgment,…

Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes?

Wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord, not confidence in one’s own judgment. A person convinced of his own wisdom becomes resistant to instruction, correction, and godly counsel. In Israel’s wisdom tradition, humility was essential because human understanding is limited and easily distorted by pride.

Isa 5:21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes…
Pro 3:7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD…
Pro 28:11 A rich man is wise in his own eyes, but a poor man…

There is more hope for a fool than for him.

A fool may still recognize his need and turn from his error, but the self-assured person sees no need to change. Pride hardens the heart against repentance and leaves a person trapped in self-deception.

Pro 29:20 Do you see a man who speaks in haste?…
1Co 3:18 Let no one deceive himself. If any of you thinks he is wise…
Ecc 7:16 Do not be overly righteous, and do not make yourself…

The slacker says,

The slacker is marked by laziness, avoidance, and a refusal to carry out ordinary responsibilities. Rather than acting with diligence, he looks for reasons to remain inactive.

Pro 6:6-11 Walk in the manner of the ant, O slacker;…
Pro 21:25 The craving of the slacker kills him…
Pro 19:24 The slacker buries his hand in the dish;…

“A lion is in the road!

Lions lived in parts of the ancient Near East, especially in less populated regions, but the danger described is greatly exaggerated. The slacker invents an unlikely threat to excuse his unwillingness to work.

Pro 22:13 There is a lion outside! I will be slain…
Mat 25:24-25 Finally, the servant who had received the one talent…
Pro 28:1 The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous…

A fierce lion roams the public square!”

The public square was a center of trade, business, and community life, making such a claim even more absurd. His growing excuse exposes not genuine danger but a heart unwilling to leave comfort and fulfill its duties.

1Pe 5:8 Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil…
Jer 5:6 Therefore a lion from the forest will strike them down,…
Pro 30:30 a lion, mighty among beasts, refusing to retreat…

As a door turns on its hinges,

A door moves repeatedly but goes nowhere, confined to the same narrow path. Its motion is effortless yet unproductive.

Pro 19:24 The slacker buries his hand in the dish;…
Pro 21:25 The craving of the slacker kills him…
Mat 25:26 ‘You wicked, lazy servant!’ replied his master.…

so the slacker turns on his bed.

The sluggard likewise remains occupied with sleep and comfort rather than useful labor. Though he may stir and shift, his life shows no progress because he refuses the responsibilities before him.

Pro 6:9-11 How long will you lie there, O slacker?…
Pro 24:33-34 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding…
Pro 19:15 Laziness brings on deep sleep, and an idle soul…

The slacker buries his hand in the dish;

Shared meals commonly involved eating from a central bowl. The slacker has food within reach, yet his indifference is so complete that he makes no use of what is available to him.

Pro 19:24 The slacker buries his hand in the dish;…
Pro 24:30-34 I went past the field of a slacker and by the vineyard…
Pro 12:27 A lazy man does not roast his game, but a diligent man…

it wearies him to bring it back to his mouth.

The deliberate exaggeration exposes laziness at its most foolish: he will not complete even the simplest task necessary to sustain himself. Such apathy leads to want and wasted opportunity, and it also pictures the danger of neglecting the spiritual provision God has set before His people.

Pro 21:25 The craving of the slacker kills him…
Pro 13:4 The slacker craves yet has nothing, but…
Pro 6:9-11 How long will you lie there, O slacker?…

The slacker is wiser in his own eyes

Laziness is joined here with pride. Though he neglects the work and responsibilities before him, the slacker considers his judgment superior and refuses correction. His confidence rests not on truth or demonstrated wisdom, but on a distorted view of himself.

Isa 5:21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes…
Pro 3:7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD…
Pro 6:9 How long will you lie there, O slacker?…

than seven men who answer discreetly.

Even a complete company of prudent, discerning men cannot persuade one who is committed to his own opinion. Their measured counsel represents genuine wisdom, while the slacker’s self-assurance exposes his folly.

Pro 15:28 The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer,…
Pro 11:14 For lack of guidance, a nation falls,…
Pro 15:22 Plans fail for lack of counsel.…

Like one who grabs a dog by the ears

Grabbing a dangerous animal invites immediate harm. The image portrays a reckless act that provokes trouble without gaining control of it.

Ecc 10:8 He who digs a pit may fall into it, and he who breaches…
Pro 17:14 To start a quarrel is to release a flood;…
Pro 15:18 A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but…

is a passerby

The person is merely passing through and has no rightful place in the dispute. He lacks the knowledge, responsibility, and relationship needed to address it wisely.

1Th 4:11-12 and to aspire to live quietly, to attend to your own matters…
Rom 12:18 If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone.
Heb 12:14 Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness,…

who meddles in a quarrel not his own.

Inserting oneself into another person’s conflict often intensifies anger and brings consequences upon the meddler. Wisdom requires restraint when a matter belongs to others.

1Pe 4:15 Indeed, none of you should suffer as a murderer or thief…
2Th 3:11 For we hear that some of you are leading undisciplined lives…
1Ti 5:13 At the same time they will also learn to be idle…

Like a madman

The image is of a man acting without reason or restraint, dangerous to everyone around him. His conduct is unpredictable, and no one can be certain where the harm will fall.

1Sa 21:13-15 So he changed his behavior before them and feigned madness…
Jhn 10:20 Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed and insane.”…

shooting firebrands

Burning brands could be thrown to ignite homes, fields, or defenses during conflict. In the hands of an uncontrolled man, they spread destruction without regard for the damage caused.

Jdg 15:4-5 Then Samson went out and caught three hundred foxes.…
Isa 7:4 Calm down and be quiet. Do not be afraid or disheartened…

and deadly arrows,

Arrows brought swift, deliberate injury at a distance. Together with firebrands, they portray both widespread ruin and personal harm, showing how reckless actions can endanger many lives.

Psa 7:12-13 If one does not repent, God will sharpen His sword;…
Job 6:4 For the arrows of the Almighty have pierced me;…

so is the man who deceives his neighbor

Deceit damages the trust on which families and communities depend. Deliberately misleading another person, whether for advantage, amusement, or spite, treats that neighbor as an object rather than one to be loved and dealt with honestly. Such conduct opposes the truthfulness and integrity God requires.

Jer 9:5 Each one betrays his friend; no one tells the truth.…
Pro 25:18 Like a club or sword or sharp arrow is a man…
Eph 4:25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood…

and says, “I was only joking!”

Calling harmful deception a joke does not remove guilt or repair the injury. A person may use humor to conceal malice, embarrass another, or escape responsibility after being exposed. Words spoken carelessly or falsely can wound deeply, and the one who causes the harm remains accountable.

Pro 10:23 The fool delights in shameful conduct, but…
Eph 5:4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk, or crude joking,…
Mat 12:36 But I tell you that men will give an account…

Without wood, a fire goes out;

Fire required a continual supply of fuel in ancient homes for warmth, cooking, and light. In the same way, disputes continue only when they are fed by harsh words, resentment, accusations, or repeated provocations. Removing what sustains hostility allows anger to diminish and peace to return.

Pro 22:10 Drive out the mocker, and conflict will depart…
Jas 3:5-6 In the same way, the tongue is a small part of the body,…
Pro 17:14 To start a quarrel is to release a flood;…

without gossip, a conflict ceases.

Secret reports, repeated rumors, and divisive speech often turn minor offenses into lasting quarrels. Gossip, a Hebrew term that can also mean “whisperer,” damages trust, separates friends, and spreads conflict through a community. When such speech is restrained, many disputes lose their force and come to an end.

Pro 16:28 A perverse man spreads dissension, and a gossip…
2Co 12:20 For I am afraid that when I come, I may not find you…
1Ti 5:13 At the same time they will also learn to be idle…

Like charcoal for embers

Charcoal keeps heat alive beneath the ashes, allowing a fire to continue long after open flames have diminished. Its steady heat pictures the ongoing influence of a person who refuses to let offenses fade.

Psa 140:10 May burning coals fall on them; may they be thrown…
Psa 18:12 From the brightness of His presence His clouds advanced…
Job 41:21 His breath sets coals ablaze, and flames pour…

and wood for fire,

Wood strengthens a fire and causes it to spread. In the same way, contentious words and actions intensify disagreements that might otherwise have ended.

Jer 5:14 Therefore this is what the LORD God of Hosts says:…
Mal 4:1 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace,”…
1Co 3:12-13 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver,…

so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife.

A quarrelsome person feeds suspicion, resentment, and division. Rather than preserving peace within the community, he supplies the conflict with what it needs to continue.

Pro 15:18 A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but…
Pro 29:22 An angry man stirs up dissension, and a hot-tempered man…
Jas 3:5-6 In the same way, the tongue is a small part of the body,…

The words of a gossip

Gossip spreads private or damaging information and often thrives on suspicion, resentment, and curiosity. In Israel’s closely connected communities, such speech could quickly fracture families, friendships, and public trust.

Pro 11:13 A gossip reveals a secret, but a trustworthy person…
Pro 20:19 He who reveals secrets is a constant gossip;…
Psa 101:5 Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret,…

are like choice morsels

Though harmful, gossip can be eagerly received because it offers the listener a sense of advantage, entertainment, or belonging. Its appeal makes it easy for false or uncharitable reports to gain influence.

Pro 16:24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul…
Pro 5:3 Though the lips of the forbidden woman drip honey…
Psa 55:21 His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart.…

that go down into the inmost being.

Repeated exposure to gossip shapes attitudes and affections, lodging deeply in the heart. What is received as a small indulgence can foster bitterness, prejudice, and division.

Pro 18:8 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels…
Psa 109:18 The cursing that he wore like a coat, may it soak…
Jas 3:6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness…

Like glaze covering an earthen vessel

A bright coating can make common pottery look sound while concealing cracks or poor clay beneath. Outward appearance may therefore give a false impression of what lies within.

Luk 11:39 Then the Lord said, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside……
Mat 23:27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites!…
1Sa 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance…

are burning lips

Eager, persuasive words can seem sincere and appealing, especially when spoken with warmth or intensity. Such speech may be used to gain trust while hiding dishonest motives.

Psa 12:2 They lie to one another; they speak with flattering lips…
Psa 55:21 His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart.…
Rom 16:18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ…

and a wicked heart.

Corrupt desires and intentions are the source of deceitful speech. The proverb warns that attractive words and a pleasing manner do not prove upright character.

Pro 6:14 With deceit in his heart he devises evil;…
Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.…
Jer 9:8 Their tongues are deadly arrows; they speak deception.…

A hateful man disguises himself with his speech,

Hatred often conceals itself behind gracious words, polite manners, or feigned concern. Such speech is intended to gain trust while hiding hostility and harmful intentions.

Psa 55:21 His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart.…
Jer 9:8 Their tongues are deadly arrows; they speak deception.…
Psa 12:2 They lie to one another; they speak with flattering lips…

but he lays up deceit in his heart.

The deceit is deliberate, arising from an inner life committed to manipulation rather than truth. Though the person may appear harmless, his hidden plans eventually reveal the character he has concealed.

Pro 12:20 Deceit is in the hearts of those who devise evil,…
Psa 41:6 My visitor speaks falsehood; he gathers slander…
Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.…

When he speaks graciously,

Smooth and pleasing words can conceal hostility. A person bent on evil may use kindness, flattery, or apparent wisdom to gain trust and lower another’s guard.

Psa 55:21 His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart.…
Psa 12:2 They lie to one another; they speak with flattering lips…
Pro 7:21 With her great persuasion she entices him;…

do not believe him,

Prudence requires judging a person by consistent character and conduct rather than by persuasive speech. Israel’s history showed the danger of trusting leaders and counselors whose words sounded convincing but whose aims opposed God’s truth.

Mat 7:15 Beware of false prophets. They come to you…
Jer 9:8 Their tongues are deadly arrows; they speak deception.…
2Co 11:13-15 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers…

for seven abominations fill his heart.

Seven portrays the fullness of the man’s inward corruption. Though his speech appears gracious, his heart is occupied by settled hatred, deceit, and wicked intentions.

Pro 6:16-19 There are six things that the LORD hates,…
Mat 15:18-19 But the things that come out of the mouth…
Luk 6:45 The good man brings good things out of the good treasure…

Though his hatred is concealed by deception,

A person may hide malice behind smooth speech and outward kindness, but concealed hatred does not change the condition of the heart. Deceit can delay discovery, yet it cannot hide evil from God.

Psa 28:3 Do not drag me away with the wicked, and with the workers…
Jer 9:8 Their tongues are deadly arrows; they speak deception.…
Psa 55:21 His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart.…

his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.

In Israel, the assembly was a public setting for judgment and accountability. What was hidden would eventually be brought into the open, revealing the offender’s true character and confirming that God judges beyond appearances.

1Ti 5:20 But those who persist in sin should be rebuked…
Act 5:1-11 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife…
Luk 12:2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed…

He who digs a pit will fall into it,

Those who secretly plan another’s ruin often bring destruction upon themselves. Pits were used as traps for animals and enemies, making the warning a fitting picture of concealed malice. Haman’s plot against Mordecai ended with Haman executed on the gallows he had prepared for his intended victim.

Ecc 10:8 He who digs a pit may fall into it, and he who breaches…
Psa 57:6 They spread a net for my feet; my soul was despondent.…
Psa 7:15-16 He has dug a hole and hollowed it out;…

and he who rolls a stone will have it roll back on him.

A stone set in motion to injure or crush another may return upon the one who moved it. Evil designs are not beyond God’s justice; the harm intended for others can become the schemer’s own judgment.

Zec 12:3 On that day, when all the nations of the earth…
Mat 21:44 He who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces…
Oba 1:15 For the Day of the LORD is near for all the nations.…

A lying tongue hates those it crushes,

Deceit is not harmless speech but an expression of hostility toward those it injures. Lies destroy trust, damage reputations, and divide families and communities. Though a liar may seek personal advantage, the result is often deep harm to others.

Pro 10:18 The one who conceals hatred has lying lips…
Psa 52:2-4 Your tongue devises destruction like a sharpened razor,…
Psa 5:6 You destroy those who tell lies; the LORD abhors…

and a flattering mouth causes ruin.

Insincere praise can be another form of deception, concealing selfish motives beneath pleasing words. Flattery misleads people into false confidence and can influence them toward unwise decisions. Both open lies and manipulative speech bring ruin because they reject truth and exploit others.

Psa 12:2-3 They lie to one another; they speak with flattering lips…
Pro 29:5 A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.
Rom 16:18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ…
