Galatians 6
Berean Study Bible

Carry One Another’s Burdens

Brothers,

Believers belong to the household of God and share equal standing in Christ, regardless of background or status. Their relationship carries obligations of love, care, and accountability.

2Th 3:14-15 Take note of anyone who does not obey the instructions…
1Th 5:12-14 But we ask you, brothers, to acknowledge…

if someone is caught in a trespass,

A believer may be overcome by sin or exposed in conduct that has departed from God’s will. Such failure is serious, yet it calls for faithful intervention rather than rejection.

Jhn 8:3-11 The scribes and Pharisees, however, brought to Him…
Luk 17:3-4 Watch yourselves. If your brother sins, rebuke him;…
Jas 5:19-20 My brothers, if one of you should wander…

you who are spiritual

Those walking under the Spirit’s direction and displaying spiritual maturity are responsible to respond wisely. Their conduct must reflect the character formed by obedience to Christ.

1Co 2:15 The spiritual man judges all things, …
1Co 3:1-3 Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual…

should restore him

The aim is to bring the fallen believer back to faithful fellowship and sound conduct. Correction seeks healing and reconciliation, not public humiliation or personal punishment.

2Co 13:11 Finally, brothers, rejoice! Aim for perfect harmony,…
2Co 2:6-8 The punishment imposed on him by the majority…

with a spirit of gentleness.

Restoration must be carried out humbly, patiently, and without harshness. Gentleness protects the sinner from needless injury while preserving the seriousness of sin.

2Ti 2:24-25 And a servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome…
Eph 4:2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience,…

But watch yourself,

Those correcting another must remain aware of their own weakness and avoid pride. No believer stands beyond the danger of spiritual failure.

1Co 10:12 So the one who thinks he is standing firm……
Mat 26:41 Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation.…

or you also may be tempted.

Temptation remains a real danger for every Christian. Awareness of one’s own need for grace produces humility when helping another return from sin.

1Co 10:13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man.…
Jas 1:13-15 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.”…

Carry one another’s burdens,

Believers are to help fellow Christians through grief, temptation, material need, persecution, and other hardships too heavy to bear alone. Such care marked the early church and expresses the unity Christ established among His people.

Rom 15:1 We who are strong ought to bear with the shortcomings…
1Th 5:14 And we urge you, brothers, to admonish the unruly…
Mat 11:28-30 Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened,…

and in this way you will fulfill

Loving service gives practical expression to obedience. Faith is not merely confessed; it is shown in how believers treat one another.

Rom 13:8-10 Be indebted to no one, except to one another in love.…
Mat 22:37-40 Jesus declared, ‘Love the Lord your God…
Jas 2:8 If you really fulfill the royal law stated in Scripture,…

the law of Christ.

Christ’s law centers on the command to love one another as He loved His disciples. It is fulfilled through humble, sacrificial care that reflects His own compassion and self-giving work.

1Co 9:21 To those without the law I became like one without the law…
Jhn 13:34 A new commandment I give you: Love one another.…
Jhn 15:12 This is My commandment, that you love one another…

If anyone thinks he is something

Paul confronts pride among believers who judged themselves spiritually superior to others. Such pride ignores the equal need of every person for God’s grace and undermines the humility required within the church.

Rom 12:3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you:…
1Co 8:2 The one who thinks he knows something…
Pro 26:12 Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes?…

when he is nothing,

Before God, no one possesses righteousness, wisdom, or standing apart from His mercy. Human status, religious effort, and spiritual privilege provide no basis for self-exaltation.

1Co 3:7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything,…
Psa 39:5 You, indeed, have made my days as handbreadths,…
Psa 62:9 Lowborn men are but a vapor; the exalted are but a lie.…

he deceives himself.

A proud person forms a false judgment of his own condition. Rather than serving others and honestly examining his life before God, he trusts in an inflated view of himself.

1Co 3:18 Let no one deceive himself. If any of you thinks he is wise…
Jas 1:22 Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.…
1Jn 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves…

Each one should test his own work.

Believers are responsible to examine their conduct, motives, and service before God. Paul addresses a tendency to judge spiritual standing by outward standards or by comparison with others. In the shared life of the Galatian churches, personal accountability remained essential; no one could rely on another person’s faithfulness or failures to establish his own standing.

2Co 13:5 Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith;…
1Co 11:28 Each one must examine himself before he eats…
Lam 3:40 Let us examine and test our ways, and turn back to the LORD.

Then he will have reason to boast in himself alone,

A clear conscience regarding one’s own obedience gives proper grounds for satisfaction, not pride. Such confidence rests on faithfully carrying out the responsibilities God has given, rather than on external displays of religious achievement.

2Co 1:12 For this is our boast: Our conscience testifies…
1Co 11:31 Now if we judged ourselves properly, we would not come…
1Co 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time;…

and not in someone else.

Comparing oneself with others produces either arrogance or discouragement and distorts honest self-examination. Each believer must answer to God for his own life, while continuing to serve and restore others within the church.

2Co 10:15-16 Neither do we boast beyond our limits…
2Co 10:12 We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves…
1Co 3:21 Therefore, stop boasting in men. All things are yours,

For each one

Every believer stands personally accountable before God for his conduct, service, and response to the gospel. Christian fellowship provides help in hardship, but it does not remove individual responsibility.

Rom 14:12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.
Ezk 18:20 The soul who sins is the one who will die.…
2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,…

should carry

The Christian life requires faithful perseverance in the duties God has entrusted to each person, actively bearing or enduring these responsibilities. No one can obey, repent, serve, or grow in another believer’s place.

Mat 16:24 Then Jesus told His disciples, “If anyone wants to come…
Mrk 8:34 Then Jesus called the crowd to Him along with His disciples,…
Luk 9:23 Then Jesus said to all of them, “If anyone wants to come…

his own load.

Each Christian has a proper share of responsibilities, callings, and ordinary obligations to bear before God. This differs from the crushing burdens believers are called to help one another carry; personal stewardship remains the responsibility of the individual.

Php 2:12 Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed…
1Co 3:8 He who plants and he who waters are one in purpose…
1Th 4:11 and to aspire to live quietly, to attend to your own matters…

Nevertheless,

Paul turns from the call to bear one another’s burdens to a practical responsibility within the church.

1Co 9:13-14 Do you not know that those who work in the temple,…
Luk 10:7 Stay at the same house, eating and drinking…
Mat 10:10 Take no bag for the road, or second tunic,…

the one who receives instruction in the word

Believers were taught the gospel and the commands of Christ by those appointed to teach and lead.

1Th 2:13 when you received the word of God that you heard from us…
Act 17:11 Now the Bereans were more noble-minded…
Jas 1:21-22 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth…

must share in all good things

Those receiving spiritual instruction were to provide material support and practical care for their teachers.

1Co 9:11 If we have sown spiritual seed among you, …
2Co 8:14 At the present time, your surplus will meet their need,…
Php 4:15-18 And as you Philippians know, in the early days…

with his instructor.

Such support honored the labor of those who faithfully taught God’s word and helped sustain the ministry of the church.

1Ti 5:17-18 Elders who lead effectively are worthy of double honor…
Num 18:20-24 Then the LORD said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance…
Deu 18:1-5 The Levitical priests shall have no portion…

Do not be deceived:

Paul warns the Galatian believers not to accept the error promoted by those who made obedience to the Mosaic Law a condition of salvation. God’s grace in Christ does not remove moral accountability, nor can religious profession conceal a life opposed to Him.

Jas 1:16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.
1Co 6:9 Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral…
2Th 2:3 Let no one deceive you in any way, for it will not come…

God is not to be mocked.

No one can treat God’s authority, commands, or judgment with contempt and escape the consequences. He sees the heart and judges rightly; outward claims of faith cannot cover deliberate rebellion.

Psa 50:21-22 You have done these things, and I kept silent;…
Num 32:23 But if you do not do this, you will certainly sin…
Rom 2:6 God “will repay each one according to his deeds.”

Whatever a man sows, he will reap in return.

Drawing on the familiar pattern of farming, Paul states that conduct produces fitting results. Those who persist in serving the sinful nature will face its ruin, while those who live by the Spirit will receive the life God has promised.

2Co 9:6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap…
Hos 8:7 For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.…
Pro 22:8 He who sows injustice will reap disaster,…

The one who sows to please his flesh,

To sow to the flesh is to order one’s choices around fallen human desires rather than God’s will. Paul uses the familiar pattern of planting and harvest to show that conduct produces fitting consequences.

Eph 2:3 All of us also lived among them at one time,…
Rom 13:14 Instead, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ,…
Rom 8:5 Those who live according to the flesh…

from the flesh will reap destruction;

A life given to sin ends in ruin, culminating in judgment and separation from God. As surely as a crop follows the seed planted, persistent rebellion brings its appointed outcome.

2Th 1:9 They will suffer the penalty of eternal destruction,…
Rom 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;…
Jas 1:15 Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;…

but the one who sows to please the Spirit,

Sowing to the Spirit describes a life shaped by the Holy Spirit’s leading, marked by obedience, holiness, and growing conformity to God’s purposes.

Rom 8:4 so that the righteous standard of the law…
Gal 5:25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step…
Jhn 3:6 Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of the Spirit.

from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

The Spirit-led life bears the promised harvest of eternal life: enduring fellowship with God beyond death and the future resurrection of His people.

Jhn 4:36 Already the reaper draws his wages and gathers a crop…
Jhn 6:63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing.…
Rom 8:11 And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead…

Let us not grow weary in well-doing,

Paul calls believers to continue doing what is right even when service brings opposition, hardship, or no immediate visible result. Life in the Spirit produces practical love, generosity, and faithfulness toward others.

2Th 3:13 But as for you, brothers, do not grow weary in well-doing.
Heb 12:3 Consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners,…
1Co 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable.…

for in due time

God has appointed the proper season for every outcome. His timetable may not match human expectations, but He sees every act of obedience and sustains His people through delay and difficulty.

1Pe 5:6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand,…
Hab 2:3 For the vision awaits an appointed time;…
Jas 5:7-8 Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming…

we will reap a harvest

Faithful labor for the Lord is never empty or forgotten. God brings fruit from obedience in the present and will fully reward His people when Christ gathers the righteous into His kingdom.

Jas 3:18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit…
2Co 9:6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap…
Psa 126:5-6 Those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy.…

if we do not give up.

Perseverance is necessary because believers face discouragement, temptation, and spiritual opposition. Those who remain steadfast depend on Christ’s strength rather than their own.

2Co 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is…
Luk 18:1 Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray…
Heb 10:36 You need to persevere, so that after you have done…

Therefore,

Paul draws a practical conclusion from his teaching on sowing and reaping. Those led by the Spirit are to persevere in faithful service, trusting God to bring a harvest in His time.

Rom 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy,…
Eph 4:1 As a prisoner in the Lord, then, I urge you to walk…
Col 3:12-14 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved…

as we have opportunity,

Believers are responsible to use the occasions God places before them. Such opportunities may be immediate and limited, calling for willing and timely action.

Eph 5:16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Pro 3:27 Do not withhold good from the deserving,…
Jhn 9:4 While it is daytime, we must do the works…

let us do good

Christian conduct is to be marked by active kindness, generosity, and service. Good works do not earn salvation, but they display the new life God produces in those who belong to Christ.

Heb 13:16 And do not neglect to do good and to share…
Tit 3:8 This saying is trustworthy. And I want you to emphasize…
1Ti 6:18 Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works,…

to everyone,

The scope of Christian concern extends beyond personal relationships and the church. Believers are to seek the welfare of all people, including those outside the faith and those who may oppose them.

1Th 5:15 Make sure that no one repays evil for evil.…
Rom 12:17-18 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider…
Luk 10:25-37 One day an expert in the law stood up to test Him.…

and especially to the family of faith.

The church has a particular duty to care for its own members. As God’s household, believers are to bear one another’s needs, providing practical help and preserving unity within the body of Christ.

1Pe 2:17 Treat everyone with high regard: Love the brotherhood…
Heb 10:24-25 And let us consider how to spur one another on…
Jhn 13:34-35 A new commandment I give you: Love one another.…

Final Warnings and Blessings

See what large letters

Paul calls attention to the conspicuous handwriting of the closing section, emphasizing the seriousness of his warning against those who were distorting the gospel.

Isa 8:1 Then the LORD said to me, “Take a large scroll…
Hab 2:2 Then the LORD answered me: “Write down this vision…

I am using to write

Rather than leaving the conclusion to a secretary, Paul personally writes it, adding his own authority and concern to the message.

1Co 16:21 This greeting is in my own hand—Paul.
Col 4:18 This greeting is in my own hand—Paul. Remember my chains.…

to you

The Galatian churches faced pressure from teachers who required Gentile believers to adopt circumcision and the Mosaic law as necessary for full acceptance before God.

2Jn 1:12 I have many things to write to you, but I would prefer not…
3Jn 1:13 I have many things to write to you, but I would prefer…

with my own hand!

Paul’s handwriting confirms the letter’s authenticity and shows his personal involvement in confronting the error threatening these believers.

2Th 3:17 This greeting is in my own hand—Paul. This is my mark…
Phm 1:19 I, Paul, write this with my own hand. I will repay it…

Those who want to make a good impression outwardly

Those who want to make a good impression outwardly were likely Judaizers who valued public acceptance and religious appearance over faithfulness to the gospel. By promoting visible observance of the law, they sought to preserve their standing within Jewish communities.

2Co 5:12 We are not commending ourselves to you again.…
Mat 23:5 All their deeds are done for men to see.…
Jhn 12:43 For they loved praise from men more than praise from God.

are trying to compel you to be circumcised.

Circumcision marked Israel’s covenant identity, but these teachers treated it as necessary for Gentile believers. Paul rejects the idea that any ritual can add to Christ’s finished work or secure salvation.

Act 15:1 Then some men came down from Judea and were teaching…
Act 15:5 But some believers from the party of the Pharisees stood up…
Tit 1:10-11 For many are rebellious and full of empty talk…

They only do this to avoid persecution for the cross of Christ.

By making Gentile Christians appear more Jewish, they hoped to escape opposition stirred by the message that salvation comes through Christ crucified rather than through obedience to the law.

1Co 1:23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews…
Jhn 15:20 Remember the word that I spoke to you: ‘No servant…
2Ti 3:12 Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives…

For the circumcised do not even keep the law themselves,

Paul exposes the inconsistency of the Judaizers who urged Gentile believers to accept circumcision and submit to the Mosaic law. Though they bore the covenant sign given to Abraham and identified themselves with the law of Moses, they did not keep its commands perfectly. Their demand placed a burden on Gentile Christians that they themselves could not fulfill.

Rom 2:17-24 Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law…
Mat 23:3-4 So practice and observe everything they tell you.…
Act 15:10 Now then, why do you test God by placing…

yet they want you to be circumcised

Circumcision had been the outward sign of God’s covenant with Abraham, but it could not make anyone righteous before God. Some Jewish teachers sought to require it of Gentile believers, treating it as necessary for full acceptance among God’s people. Paul rejects this requirement because justification comes through faith in Christ, not through adopting the law’s ceremonial obligations.

Act 15:1-5 Then some men came down from Judea and were teaching…
Gal 2:3-5 Yet not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled…
Php 3:2-3 Watch out for those dogs, those workers of evil…

that they may boast in your flesh.

Their concern was not faithful obedience to God but the visible evidence that Gentiles had submitted to their demands. They could point to circumcised converts as proof of their influence and claim success in preserving Jewish customs. Paul contrasts such outward boasting with the work of Christ, which brings salvation and makes believers a new creation.

2Co 11:18 Since many are boasting according to the flesh,…
Php 3:3 For it is we who are the circumcision, we who worship…
2Co 10:17 Rather, “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”

But as for me, may I never boast,

Paul rejects the pride of those who promoted circumcision as a basis for acceptance before God. Human effort, religious status, and outward observance cannot provide grounds for glory before the Lord.

Rom 3:27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded.…
1Co 1:29 so that no one may boast in His presence.
Eph 2:9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,

The death of Jesus is the sole basis of Paul’s confidence. Though crucifixion was a Roman punishment marked by shame and death, Christ’s cross accomplished atonement for sin and reconciliation with God, transforming a symbol of defeat into one of victory and salvation.

1Co 2:2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you……
1Co 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness…
1Co 1:31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts…

through which the world has been crucified to me,

Through Christ’s death, Paul regarded the fallen order of sinful desires, worldly approval, and self-righteous ambition as having lost its claim on him.

Col 2:20 If you have died with Christ to the spiritual forces…
1Jn 2:15 Do not love the world or anything in the world.…
Jas 4:4 You adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship…

and I to the world.

Paul likewise belonged no longer to the world’s values or pursuits. United with Christ in His death, he lived under a new allegiance to God.

Gal 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live,…
Col 3:3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ…
Jhn 15:19 If you were of the world, it would love you as its own…

For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything.

Circumcision had been the covenant sign given to Abraham and remained important to many Jewish believers. Some insisted that Gentile Christians must be circumcised to be fully accepted by God, creating conflict in the early church. Paul rejects the idea that either circumcision or its absence determines a person’s standing before God. Salvation comes through faith in Christ, not through religious ceremonies, ancestry, or obedience to the Mosaic Law.

1Co 7:19 Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing.…
Gal 5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision……
Rom 2:28-29 A man is not a Jew because he is one outwardly,…

What counts is a new creation.

Through faith in Christ, believers are made new by the work of the Holy Spirit. This renewal changes the heart and establishes a new identity that is not defined by Jew or Gentile. God’s people are marked by belonging to Christ and living under the New Covenant, rather than by outward signs.

2Co 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.…
Eph 4:24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God…
Eph 2:15 by abolishing in His flesh the law of commandments…

Peace and mercy to all who walk by this rule,

Paul blesses those who order their lives by the truth that neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has saving value, but only the new creation brought through Christ. Peace speaks of reconciliation with God, and mercy of His compassion toward those who depend on Christ rather than human effort.

Php 3:16 Nevertheless, we must live up to what we have…
Jas 3:17-18 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure,…
Psa 85:10-11 Loving devotion and faithfulness have joined together;…

even to the Israel of God.

God’s covenant people are identified by faith in Christ, not ethnic descent or observance of the Mosaic law. Jewish and Gentile believers alike share in the promises of God through union with Christ, forming one redeemed people under the new covenant.

Rom 9:6-8 It is not as though God’s word has failed…
Gal 3:7 Understand, then, that those who have faith…
Rom 11:17-18 Now if some branches have been broken off,…

From now on let no one cause me trouble,

Paul closes with a firm appeal for the churches to stop entertaining the agitation of those who distorted the gospel by requiring Gentile believers to submit to circumcision and the Mosaic law for acceptance with God. His authority did not rest on human approval but on his calling and service to Christ.

2Co 13:3 Since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking…
2Co 12:12 The marks of a true apostle—signs, wonders…
1Co 9:2 Even if I am not an apostle to others, surely I am…

for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.

Paul’s scars from beatings, imprisonment, and persecution showed that he belonged to Christ and had suffered for faithfully proclaiming the gospel. Unlike those who sought outward religious marks for boasting, Paul carried visible evidence of his devotion to the crucified Lord.

2Co 4:10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus,…
2Co 11:23-25 Are they servants of Christ? I am speaking as if I were…
Act 14:19 Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium…

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ

Paul closes by commending the Galatians to the undeserved favor secured through Christ’s death and resurrection. Their standing before God rests on Christ’s work, not on circumcision or observance of the Mosaic law.

2Co 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God…
1Th 5:28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
Eph 6:24 Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ…

be with your spirit,

He desires that Christ’s grace would govern their inner lives, correcting the false teaching that had troubled the churches and strengthening them to walk by the Holy Spirit.

Phm 1:25 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
2Ti 4:22 The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you all.
Php 4:23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

brothers.

Despite his sharp warnings, Paul addresses them as fellow members of God’s family through faith in Christ.

2Co 13:11 Finally, brothers, rejoice! Aim for perfect harmony,…
Heb 13:22 I urge you, brothers, to bear with my word of exhortation,…
1Th 5:27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read…

Amen.

The closing affirms the certainty and sincerity of Paul’s final blessing.

Rev 22:21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all the saints. Amen.
Rom 16:27 to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ!…
Jud 1:25 to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, dominion…
