2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials of many kinds, Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Consider it all joy, my brothers <i>and sisters,</i> when you encounter various trials, Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,
3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. Knowing <i>this</i>, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
4 Allow perseverance to finish its work, so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. But let patience have <i>her</i> perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. And let endurance have <i>its</i> perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
5 Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all <i>men</i> liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
6 But he must ask in faith, without doubting, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
7 That man should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. For that person ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.
8 He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. A double minded man <i>is</i> unstable in all his ways. <i>being</i> a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.
9 The brother in humble circumstances should exult in his high position. Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: Now the brother <i>or sister</i> of humble <i>circumstances</i> is to glory in his high position; Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position.
10 But the one who is rich should exult in his low position, because he will pass away like a flower of the field. and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. but the rich person <i>is to glory</i> in his humiliation, because like flowering grass he will pass away. But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower.
11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its flower falls and its beauty is lost. So too, the rich man will fade away in the midst of his pursuits. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits. For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; and its flower falls off and the beauty of its appearance is destroyed; so also the rich person, in the midst of his pursuits, will die out. For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.
12 Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him. Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. Blessed <i>is</i> the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which <i>the Lord</i> has promised to those who love Him. Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
13 When tempted, no one should say, God is tempting me. For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone. Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: No one is to say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;
14 But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires he is lured away and enticed. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.
15 Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it has run its course, brings forth death. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Do not err, my beloved brethren. Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers <i>and sisters.</i> Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters.
17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, with whom there is no change or shifting shadow. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we would be a kind of firstfruits of His creation. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. In the exercise of His will He gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures. 19 My beloved brothers, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: You know <i>this,</i> my beloved brothers <i>and sisters.</i> Now everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak, <i>and</i> slow to anger; My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,
20 for man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness that God desires. for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. for a man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness of God. because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.
21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and every expression of evil, and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save your souls. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. Therefore, ridding <i>yourselves</i> of all filthiness and <i>all</i> that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
22 Be doers of the word, and not hearers only. Otherwise, you are deceiving yourselves. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not just hearers who deceive themselves. Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
23 For anyone who hears the word but does not carry it out is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror, For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror
24 and after observing himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. for <i>once</i> he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.
25 But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom, and continues to do so— not being a forgetful hearer, but an effective doer— he will be blessed in what he does. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth <i>therein</i>, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. But one who has looked intently at the perfect law, the <i>law</i> of freedom, and has continued <i>in it,</i> not having become a forgetful hearer but an active doer, this person will be blessed in what he does. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not bridle his tongue, he deceives his heart and his religion is worthless. If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion <i>is</i> vain. If anyone thinks himself to be religious, yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his <i>own</i> heart, this person’s religion is worthless. Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.
27 Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, <i>and</i> to keep himself unspotted from the world. Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of <i>our</i> God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, <i>and</i> to keep oneself unstained by the world. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
