1 Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary. Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly place of holiness. 2 A tabernacle was prepared. In its first room were the lampstand, the table, and the consecrated bread. This was called the Holy Place. For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein <i>was</i> the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary. 4 containing the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant. Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein <i>was</i> the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; having a golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden jar holding the manna, Aaron’s staff which budded, and the tablets of the covenant; which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant. 5 Above the ark were the cherubim of glory, overshadowing the mercy seat. But we cannot discuss these things in detail now. Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. 6 When everything had been prepared in this way, the priests entered regularly into the first room to perform their sacred duties. These preparations having thus been made, the priests go regularly into the first section, performing their ritual duties, Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service <i>of God</i>. Now when these things have been so prepared, the priests are continually entering the outer tabernacle, performing the divine worship, When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly into the outer room to carry on their ministry.
7 But only the high priest entered the second room, and then only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance. but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people. But into the second <i>went</i> the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and <i>for</i> the errors of the people: but into the second, only the high priest <i>enters</i> once a year, not without <i>taking</i> blood which he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance. But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.
8 By this arrangement the Holy Spirit was showing that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still standing. By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: The Holy Spirit <i>is</i> signifying this, that the way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed while the outer tabernacle is still standing, The Holy Spirit was showing by this that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still functioning.
9 It is an illustration for the present time, because the gifts and sacrifices being offered were unable to cleanse the conscience of the worshiper. (which is symbolic for the present age). According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, Which <i>was</i> a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; which <i>is</i> a symbol for the present time. Accordingly both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make the worshiper perfect in conscience, This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper.
10 They consist only in food and drink and special washings— external regulations imposed until the time of reform. but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation. <i>Which stood</i> only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed <i>on them</i> until the time of reformation. since they <i>relate</i> only to food, drink, and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until a time of reformation. They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings—external regulations applying until the time of the new order.
11 But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that have come, He went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made by hands and is not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by the blood of goats and calves, but He entered the Most Holy Place once for all by His own blood, thus securing eternal redemption. he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption <i>for us</i>. and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all <i>time,</i> having obtained eternal redemption. He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.
13 For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that their bodies are clean, For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled, sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean.
14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself unblemished to God, purify our consciences from works of death, so that we may serve the living God! how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. 15 Therefore Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, now that He has died to redeem them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant. 16 In the case of a will, it is necessary to establish the death of the one who made it, For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. For where a testament <i>is</i>, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For where there is a covenant, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it. In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it,
17 because a will does not take effect until the one who made it has died; it cannot be executed while he is still alive. For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive. For a testament <i>is</i> of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. For a covenant is valid <i>only</i> when <i>people are</i> dead, for it is never in force while the one who made it lives. because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living.
18 That is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood. Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood. Whereupon neither the first <i>testament</i> was dedicated without blood. Therefore even the first <i>covenant</i> was not inaugurated without blood. 21 In the same way, he sprinkled with blood the tabernacle and all the vessels used in worship. And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship. Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. And in the same way he sprinkled both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood. In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies.
22 According to the law, in fact, nearly everything must be purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. And almost all things are cleansed with blood, according to the Law, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
23 So it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 25 Nor did He enter heaven to offer Himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year by year with blood that is not his own. Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own.
26 Otherwise, Christ would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But now He has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself. for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. 28 so also Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await Him. so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without <i>reference to</i> sin, to those who eagerly await Him. so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
