1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

1Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ Λόγος καὶ ὁ Λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν Θεόν καὶ Θεὸς ἦν ὁ Λόγος

2He was with God in the beginning.

2Οὗτος ἦν ἐν ἀρχῇ πρὸς τὸν Θεόν

3All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created.

3πάντα δι’ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο καὶ χωρὶς αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο οὐδὲ ἕν ὃ γέγονεν

4In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

4ἐν αὐτῷ ζωὴ ἦν καὶ ἡ ζωὴ ἦν τὸ φῶς τῶν ἀνθρώπων

5That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.

5καὶ τὸ φῶς ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ φαίνει καὶ ἡ σκοτία αὐτὸ οὐ κατέλαβεν

6There was a man sent from God whose name was John.

6Ἐγένετο ἄνθρωπος ἀπεσταλμένος παρὰ Θεοῦ ὄνομα αὐτῷ Ἰωάννης

7He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him.

7οὗτος ἦλθεν εἰς μαρτυρίαν ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός ἵνα πάντες πιστεύσωσιν δι’ αὐτοῦ

8He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.

8οὐκ ἦν ἐκεῖνος τὸ φῶς ἀλλ’ ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός

9The true light that gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

9Ἦν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινὸν ὃ φωτίζει πάντα ἄνθρωπον ἐρχόμενον εἰς τὸν κόσμον

10He was in the world, and the world was created through him, and yet the world did not recognize him.

10ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ἦν καὶ ὁ κόσμος δι’ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο καὶ ὁ κόσμος αὐτὸν οὐκ ἔγνω

11He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.

11εἰς τὰ ἴδια ἦλθεν καὶ οἱ ἴδιοι αὐτὸν οὐ παρέλαβον

12But to all who did receive him, he gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in his name,

12ὅσοι δὲ ἔλαβον αὐτόν ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν τέκνα Θεοῦ γενέσθαι τοῖς πιστεύουσιν εἰς τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ

13who were born, not of natural descent, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.

13οἳ οὐκ ἐξ αἱμάτων οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος σαρκὸς οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος ἀνδρὸς ἀλλ’ ἐκ Θεοῦ ἐγεννήθησαν

14The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

14Καὶ ὁ Λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο καὶ ἐσκήνωσεν ἐν ἡμῖν καὶ ἐθεασάμεθα τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ δόξαν ὡς μονογενοῦς παρὰ Πατρός πλήρης χάριτος καὶ ἀληθείας

15(John testified concerning him and exclaimed, “This was the one of whom I said, ‘The one coming after me ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ ”)

15Ἰωάννης μαρτυρεῖ περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ κέκραγεν λέγων Οὗτος ἦν ὃν εἶπον Ὁ ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν ὅτι πρῶτός μου ἦν

16Indeed, we have all received grace upon grace from his fullness,

16Ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ πληρώματος αὐτοῦ ἡμεῖς πάντες ἐλάβομεν καὶ χάριν ἀντὶ χάριτος

17for the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

17ὅτι ὁ νόμος διὰ Μωϋσέως ἐδόθη ἡ χάρις καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐγένετο

18No one has ever seen God. The one and only Son, who is himself God and is at the Father’s side —he has revealed him.

18Θεὸν οὐδεὶς ἑώρακεν πώποτε μονογενὴς Θεὸς ὁ ὢν εἰς τὸν κόλπον τοῦ Πατρὸς ἐκεῖνος ἐξηγήσατο

19This was John’s testimony when the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you? ”

19Καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ μαρτυρία τοῦ Ἰωάννου ὅτε ἀπέστειλαν πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐξ Ἱεροσολύμων ἱερεῖς καὶ Λευίτας ἵνα ἐρωτήσωσιν αὐτόν Σὺ τίς εἶ

20He didn’t deny it but confessed: “I am not the Messiah.”

20καὶ ὡμολόγησεν καὶ οὐκ ἠρνήσατο καὶ ὡμολόγησεν ὅτι Ἐγὼ οὐκ εἰμὶ ὁ Χριστός

21“What then? ” they asked him. “Are you Elijah? ” “I am not,” he said. “Are you the Prophet? ” “No,” he answered.

21Καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτόν Τί οὖν σὺ Ἠλίας εἶ Καὶ λέγει Οὐκ εἰμί Ὁ προφήτης εἶ σύ Καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Οὔ

22“Who are you, then? ” they asked. “We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What can you tell us about yourself? ”

22Εἶπαν οὖν αὐτῷ Τίς εἶ ἵνα ἀπόκρισιν δῶμεν τοῖς πέμψασιν ἡμᾶς τί λέγεις περὶ σεαυτοῦ

23He said, “I am a voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord ​--​just as Isaiah the prophet said.”

23Ἔφη Ἐγὼ φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ Εὐθύνατε τὴν ὁδὸν Κυρίου καθὼς εἶπεν Ἠσαΐας ὁ προφήτης

24Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.

24Καὶ ἀπεσταλμένοι ἦσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων

25So they asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you aren’t the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet? ”

25καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Τί οὖν βαπτίζεις εἰ σὺ οὐκ εἶ ὁ Χριστὸς οὐδὲ Ἠλίας οὐδὲ ὁ προφήτης

26“I baptize with water,” John answered them. “Someone stands among you, but you don’t know him.

26Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰωάννης λέγων Ἐγὼ βαπτίζω ἐν ὕδατι μέσος ὑμῶν ἕστηκεν* ὃν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε

27He is the one coming after me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to untie.”

27ὁ ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ἄξιος ἵνα λύσω αὐτοῦ τὸν ἱμάντα τοῦ ὑποδήματος

28All this happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

28Ταῦτα ἐν Βηθανίᾳ ἐγένετο πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου ὅπου ἦν ὁ Ἰωάννης βαπτίζων

29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

29Τῇ ἐπαύριον βλέπει τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτόν καὶ λέγει Ἴδε ὁ Ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ ὁ αἴρων τὴν ἁμαρτίαν τοῦ κόσμου

30This is the one I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’

30οὗτός ἐστιν ὑπὲρ οὗ ἐγὼ εἶπον Ὀπίσω μου ἔρχεται ἀνὴρ ὃς ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν ὅτι πρῶτός μου ἦν

31I didn’t know him, but I came baptizing with water so he might be revealed to Israel.”

31κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν ἀλλ’ ἵνα φανερωθῇ τῷ Ἰσραὴλ διὰ τοῦτο ἦλθον ἐγὼ ἐν ὕδατι βαπτίζων

32And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and he rested on him.

32Καὶ ἐμαρτύρησεν Ἰωάννης λέγων ὅτι Τεθέαμαι τὸ Πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον ὡς περιστερὰν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐπ’ αὐτόν

33I didn’t know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The one you see the Spirit descending and resting on ​--​he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

33κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν ἀλλ’ ὁ πέμψας με βαπτίζειν ἐν ὕδατι ἐκεῖνός μοι εἶπεν Ἐφ’ ὃν ἂν ἴδῃς τὸ Πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον καὶ μένον ἐπ’ αὐτόν οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ βαπτίζων ἐν Πνεύματι Ἁγίῳ

34I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”

34κἀγὼ ἑώρακα καὶ μεμαρτύρηκα ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ

35The next day, John was standing with two of his disciples.

35Τῇ ἐπαύριον πάλιν εἱστήκει ὁ Ἰωάννης καὶ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ δύο

36When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God! ”

36καὶ ἐμβλέψας τῷ Ἰησοῦ περιπατοῦντι λέγει Ἴδε ὁ Ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ

37The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus.

37καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ δύο μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος καὶ ἠκολούθησαν τῷ Ἰησοῦ

38When Jesus turned and noticed them following him, he asked them, “What are you looking for? ” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying? ”

38Στραφεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ θεασάμενος αὐτοὺς ἀκολουθοῦντας λέγει αὐτοῖς Τί ζητεῖτε Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ῥαββί ὃ λέγεται μεθερμηνευόμενον Διδάσκαλε Ποῦ μένεις

39“Come and you’ll see,” he replied. So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.

39Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἔρχεσθε καὶ ὄψεσθε ἦλθαν οὖν καὶ εἶδαν ποῦ μένει καὶ παρ’ αὐτῷ ἔμειναν τὴν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην ὥρα ἦν ὡς δεκάτη

40Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed him.

40Ἦν Ἀνδρέας ὁ ἀδελφὸς Σίμωνος Πέτρου εἷς ἐκ τῶν δύο τῶν ἀκουσάντων παρὰ Ἰωάννου καὶ ἀκολουθησάντων αὐτῷ

41He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated “the Christ”),

41εὑρίσκει οὗτος πρῶτον τὸν ἀδελφὸν τὸν ἴδιον Σίμωνα καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Εὑρήκαμεν τὸν Μεσσίαν ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον Χριστός

42and he brought Simon to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, he said, “You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated “Peter”).

42ἤγαγεν αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐμβλέψας αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Σὺ εἶ Σίμων ὁ υἱὸς Ἰωάννου σὺ κληθήσῃ Κηφᾶς ὃ ἑρμηνεύεται Πέτρος

43The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. He found Philip and told him, “Follow me.”

43Τῇ ἐπαύριον ἠθέλησεν ἐξελθεῖν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν καὶ εὑρίσκει Φίλιππον καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἀκολούθει μοι

44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter.

44ἦν δὲ ὁ Φίλιππος ἀπὸ Βηθσαϊδά ἐκ τῆς πόλεως Ἀνδρέου καὶ Πέτρου

45Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law (and so did the prophets): Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”

45Εὑρίσκει Φίλιππος τὸν Ναθαναὴλ καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ὃν ἔγραψεν Μωϋσῆς ἐν τῷ νόμῳ καὶ οἱ προφῆται εὑρήκαμεν Ἰησοῦν υἱὸν τοῦ Ἰωσὴφ τὸν ἀπὸ Ναζαρέτ

46“Can anything good come out of Nazareth? ” Nathanael asked him. “Come and see,” Philip answered.

46Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ Ἐκ Ναζαρὲτ δύναταί τι ἀγαθὸν εἶναι Λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Φίλιππος Ἔρχου καὶ ἴδε

47Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”

47Εἶδεν ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς τὸν Ναθαναὴλ ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ λέγει περὶ αὐτοῦ Ἴδε ἀληθῶς Ἰσραηλίτης ἐν ᾧ δόλος οὐκ ἔστιν

48“How do you know me? ” Nathanael asked. “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered.

48Λέγει αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ Πόθεν με γινώσκεις Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Πρὸ τοῦ σε Φίλιππον φωνῆσαι ὄντα ὑπὸ τὴν συκῆν εἶδόν σε

49“Rabbi,” Nathanael replied, “You are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel! ”

49Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ Ῥαββί σὺ εἶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ σὺ Βασιλεὺς εἶ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ

50Jesus responded to him, “Do you believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.”

50Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ὅτι εἶπόν σοι ὅτι εἶδόν σε ὑποκάτω τῆς συκῆς πιστεύεις μείζω τούτων ὄψῃ

51Then he said, “Truly I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

51καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὄψεσθε τὸν οὐρανὸν ἀνεῳγότα καὶ τοὺς ἀγγέλους τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀναβαίνοντας καὶ καταβαίνοντας ἐπὶ τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
