Berean Study Bible The Coming Deliverance of JerusalemZechariah delivers a solemn divine pronouncement concerning Israel. Though the nation had returned from Babylonian exile and rebuilt the temple, its future remained bound to God’s covenant purposes and to coming conflict among the nations. Mal 1:1 This is the burden of the word of the LORD to Israel… Thus declares the LORD, The message rests on the authority of Israel’s God, not on political circumstances or the prophet’s personal judgment. Amo 1:3 For three transgressions of Damascus, even four,… who stretches out the heavens The Lord who speaks is the Creator and ruler of all that exists. The nations opposing Israel are subject to His power. Isa 42:5 This is what God the LORD says—He who created the heavens… and lays the foundation of the earth, He established the world in order and sustains it according to His purpose. Israel’s future is therefore not determined by surrounding powers. Psa 102:25 In the beginning You laid the foundations of the earth… who forms the spirit of man within him: God is also the Maker of every human being, possessing full knowledge of human motives, fears, and plans. The coming events described in the prophecy unfold under the rule of the Creator of heaven, earth, and mankind. Gen 2:7 Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground… “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of drunkenness to all the surrounding peoples. God declares that Jerusalem will become a source of confusion and ruin to the nations that gather against it. Though surrounding enemies may seek to control or destroy the city, their assault will bring judgment upon themselves. Jerusalem’s central place in God’s covenant purposes makes opposition to it an act of defiance against Him. Jer 25:15-17 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me:… Judah will be besieged, as well as Jerusalem. The conflict will extend beyond the city walls into the wider land of Judah. God’s people will face a real and severe military threat, yet the siege will lead to God’s intervention rather than the defeat of His purposes. 2Ki 25:1-2 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem… On that day, God points to a future, appointed time when He will intervene openly in the affairs of Jerusalem and the nations. The events are not accidental but unfold according to His sovereign purpose. Zec 14:1 Behold, a day of the LORD is coming when your plunder… when all the nations of the earth gather against her, Jerusalem will become the focus of an international assault. The nations’ united opposition reflects their rebellion against God’s rule and His purposes for Israel. Psa 2:1-2 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?… I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples; Though the city appears vulnerable, God will make it impossible for its enemies to overcome without bringing ruin upon themselves. Jerusalem will stand as an obstacle no human coalition can remove. Dan 2:34-35 As you watched, a stone was cut out, but not by human hands.… all who would heave it away will be severely injured. Those who seek to destroy or dispossess Jerusalem will suffer the consequences of opposing God’s declared will. Their attack will end in judgment rather than victory. Pro 26:27 He who digs a pit will fall into it and he who rolls a stone… On that day, declares the LORD, God points to the coming time when He will intervene openly on behalf of Jerusalem and Judah, bringing judgment upon the nations gathered against them. Zec 14:9 On that day the LORD will become King over all the earth—… I will strike every horse with panic, The military strength of the invading armies will collapse under God’s direct action. Horses, essential to ancient warfare for cavalry and chariots, will become uncontrollable rather than useful. Hag 2:22 I will overturn royal thrones and destroy the power…… and every rider with madness. Soldiers and commanders will be thrown into confusion, unable to act with discipline or purpose. Their superior numbers and weapons will not protect them from divine judgment. Deu 28:28 The LORD will afflict you with madness, blindness,… I will keep a watchful eye on the house of Judah, While the hostile forces are disabled, the Lord will guard Judah. His attention reflects His covenant commitment to preserve His people amid the conflict. Ezr 5:5 But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews… but I will strike with blindness all the horses of the nations. The nations’ military resources will be rendered helpless. Unable to see or respond effectively, their forces will fail in their assault against the people and city God has chosen to defend. 2Ki 6:18 As the Arameans came down against him, Elisha prayed… Then the leaders of Judah will say in their hearts: As Jerusalem faces the nations gathered against it, Judah’s leaders come to a settled conviction that the city’s security rests with God. Their confidence is not merely public resolve but an inward recognition of the Lord’s intervention. Jos 1:9 Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous?… ‘The people of Jerusalem are my strength, The leaders of Judah see Jerusalem’s inhabitants as a source of strength because the city stands under God’s protection. Rather than division between Judah and Jerusalem, the crisis produces unity among the covenant people. Psa 122:3 Jerusalem is built up as a city united together, for the LORD of Hosts is their God.’ The Lord of Hosts, ruler over all heavenly armies, is the true defender of Jerusalem. His protection fulfills His covenant purposes for Judah and Jerusalem and anticipates the future deliverance of Israel under the Messiah. 1Sa 17:45 But David said to the Philistine, “You come against me… On that day God will intervene decisively when the nations gather against Jerusalem. Zec 14:9 On that day the LORD will become King over all the earth—… I will make the clans of Judah The families and leaders of Judah will become instruments of God’s defense. Gen 49:8-10 Judah, your brothers shall praise you.… like a firepot in a woodpile, Their strength will spread rapidly through the forces arrayed against them, Isa 10:17 And the Light of Israel will become a fire,… like a flaming torch among the sheaves; Like a flaming torch among sheaves, Judah’s leaders will bring swift and overwhelming defeat upon the surrounding armies. Jdg 15:4-5 Then Samson went out and caught three hundred foxes.… they will consume all the peoples around them on the right and on the left, Judah will prevail over enemies on every side, not by its own power but by God’s appointed action. Psa 18:37-38 I pursued my enemies and overtook them;… while the people of Jerusalem remain secure there. Jerusalem will remain in its place, preserved from conquest despite the conflict around it. Jer 33:16 In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell… The LORD will save the tents of Judah first, The Lord will deliver the outlying towns and villages of Judah before Jerusalem. Those living outside the fortified capital are not overlooked in the coming conflict. Judah’s salvation comes directly from God, not from its military strength or political importance. Jdg 1:1-2 After the death of Joshua, the Israelites inquired… so that the glory of the house of David The Davidic rulers in Jerusalem will have no basis for claiming greater honor than the rest of Judah. God preserves the distinction of David’s line and its promised future while preventing the royal house from receiving credit for the nation’s deliverance. 2Sa 7:12-16 And when your days are fulfilled and you rest… and of the people of Jerusalem Jerusalem’s inhabitants, though they live at Israel’s religious and political center, will not stand above their fellow countrymen. The city’s security and prominence will not make its people more deserving of God’s rescue. 2Ki 19:34 I will defend this city and save it for My own sake… may not be greater than that of Judah. The Lord’s order of deliverance protects the unity of His people and removes grounds for pride. Judah and Jerusalem alike depend on His saving power. 1Ch 5:2 And though Judah prevailed over his brothers, … On that day God will intervene decisively in the future defense and deliverance of Jerusalem, bringing His purposes for Israel to fulfillment. Zec 14:9 On that day the LORD will become King over all the earth—… the LORD will defend the people of Jerusalem, Jerusalem, long marked by conflict and siege, will be preserved by the Lord’s direct protection. Isa 37:35 “I will defend this city and save it for My own sake…”… so that the weakest among them will be like David, Even the most vulnerable inhabitants will receive courage and strength comparable to Israel’s great warrior-king. Psa 78:70-72 He chose David His servant and took him from the sheepfolds;… and the house of David will be like God, The Davidic rulers will be endowed with extraordinary authority and power as they lead the people under God’s rule. Psa 45:6-7 Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever,… like the angel of the LORD going before them. The Lord’s own presence will go before them, guiding and securing their victory. Exo 23:20-23 Behold, I am sending an angel before you to protect you… So on that day Zechariah looks ahead to the time when the Lord decisively intervenes in the affairs of the nations. Jol 3:18 And in that day the mountains will drip with sweet wine… I will set out to destroy God will judge the enemies gathered against His covenant people and will personally secure Jerusalem’s deliverance. Zec 14:3 Then the LORD will go out to fight against those… all the nations The attack will involve a broad international coalition rather than Israel’s local enemies alone. Jol 3:2 I will gather all the nations and bring them down… that come against Jerusalem. Jerusalem remains central to God’s purposes for Israel and will be the focal point of this final conflict and vindication. Zec 14:2 I will gather all the nations for battle against Jerusalem,…
Mourning the One They PiercedGod promises a future work among David’s royal line and Jerusalem’s inhabitants, representing the restored nation of Israel. The outpouring comes from God’s initiative and brings spiritual renewal to those who had resisted Him. Jol 2:28-29 And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people.… a spirit of grace and prayer, God will grant mercy that leads His people to seek Him sincerely. Their prayer will arise from awakened hearts, producing repentance rather than outward religious formality. Heb 4:16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence… and they will look on Me, the One they have pierced. The Lord identifies Himself with the pierced Messiah. Jesus’ crucifixion fulfilled this prophecy, and Israel’s future recognition of Him will bring a national acknowledgment of its rejection of the Messiah. Jhn 19:37 And, as another Scripture says: “They will look on… They will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child, The response will be deeply personal and communal. Israel will grieve over the One it rejected with the sorrow reserved for the loss of an only son. Jer 6:26 O daughter of my people, dress yourselves in sackcloth… and grieve bitterly for Him as one grieves for a firstborn son. The mourning will reflect recognition of the Messiah’s unique place and the seriousness of the nation’s sin. This repentance marks the beginning of Israel’s restoration under the Lord. Exo 11:4-6 So Moses declared, “This is what the LORD says:… On that day God’s future intervention will bring both judgment and salvation, culminating in a national recognition of sin and of the Messiah whom the people rejected. Zec 13:1 On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David,… the wailing in Jerusalem The city’s inhabitants will mourn deeply as they face the spiritual and historical consequences of their rejection. Lam 1:2 She weeps aloud in the night, with tears upon her cheeks.… will be as great as the wailing of Hadad-rimmon The grief will rival the national lament after King Josiah’s death, when Judah lost a godly king at Megiddo and recognized the shadow of coming judgment. 2Ch 35:24-25 So his servants took him out of his chariot, … in the plain of Megiddo. The battlefield where Josiah fell became a lasting symbol of national sorrow, underscoring the scale of Jerusalem’s future mourning. Jdg 5:19 Kings came and fought; then the kings of Canaan… The land will mourn, Israel’s grief will extend throughout the nation as the people recognize their sin and the One they pierced. The mourning reflects genuine repentance and a national turning to God. Hos 4:3 Therefore the land mourns, and all who dwell in it… each clan on its own: Though the response is national, it is also personal. Every family will stand accountable before God, mourning without relying on the faith or response of others. Jos 7:14-18 In the morning you must present yourselves tribe by tribe.… the clan of the house of David and their wives, David’s royal descendants will mourn, showing that no rank or heritage exempts anyone from repentance. Men and women alike will share in this recognition of the rejected Messiah. 2Sa 7:16 Your house and kingdom will endure forever… the clan of the house of Nathan and their wives, Nathan’s family represents another branch of David’s descendants. Their inclusion shows that the mourning will reach beyond the royal household to every part of the nation. 2Sa 5:14 These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem… the clan of the house of Levi and their wives, Levi’s descendants were appointed to serve in Israel’s worship, including the priests and those who assisted with the tabernacle and temple. Their separate mourning shows that repentance reaches even the spiritual leaders of the nation. The wives mourn separately as well, emphasizing personal grief and confession within every household. Num 3:17-20 These were the sons of Levi by name: Gershon, Kohath… the clan of Shimei and their wives, Shimei was a Levitical family descended from Gershon, one of Levi’s sons. Its inclusion shows that the mourning extends through the smaller branches of the Levites, not merely the leading priestly households. Each family and each person responds individually to the national recognition of sin. Num 3:21-26 From Gershon came the Libnite clan and the Shimeite clan;… and all the remaining clans and their wives. The mourning reaches beyond the house of David, Nathan, Levi, and Shimei to every other family in Israel. Each household mourns separately, with husbands and wives set apart, portraying personal as well as national repentance. Jerusalem’s future deliverance will bring Israel to recognize the One they pierced and to grieve over its rejection of Him. The scene anticipates the nation’s spiritual restoration under the Messiah.
