The Boundaries of Canaan

Then the LORD said to Moses,

God continued to direct Israel through Moses as the nation prepared to enter Canaan. Moses received the Lord’s commands and delivered them faithfully to the people, serving as God’s appointed mediator and leader. The name LORD identifies Israel’s covenant God, who was fulfilling His promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob by giving their descendants the land of Canaan. The instructions that follow establish the boundaries of the inheritance Israel was to possess after its wilderness journey.

Exo 6:1 But the LORD said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do…
Exo 12:1 Now the LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt,
Deu 31:14 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, the time of your death…

“Command the Israelites and say to them:

God directs Moses to deliver His command to the nation, reaffirming Moses’ role as mediator of the covenant and Israel’s responsibility to obey the Lord’s instructions.

Lev 24:2 Command the Israelites to bring you pure oil for the light,…
Exo 12:3 Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth day…

When you enter the land of Canaan,

The conquest and settlement of Canaan lay ahead of Israel after their wilderness years. The land had been promised to Abraham’s descendants and would mark the fulfillment of God’s pledge to establish them in their own homeland.

Deu 7:1 When the LORD your God brings you into the land…
Deu 11:31 For you are about to cross the Jordan…
Exo 3:17 And I have promised to bring you out of your affliction…

it will be allotted to you as an inheritance

Canaan was God’s gift to Israel, not a territory gained merely by military strength. It was to be divided among the tribes and families as a lasting possession under the Lord’s authority.

Ezk 47:13-20 This is what the Lord GOD says: “These are the boundaries”…

Your southern border will extend from the Wilderness of Zin

The Wilderness of Zin lay in the desert south of Canaan and formed part of Israel’s approach to the land after years of wandering. It was near Kadesh, where Israel faced repeated crises of unbelief and where Moses disobeyed God at the waters of Meribah. Its inclusion in the boundary marked the end of the wilderness region and the beginning of Israel’s allotted inheritance.

along the border of Edom.

Edom occupied the territory southeast of Canaan and was descended from Esau, Jacob’s brother. Though related by ancestry, Israel and Edom remained separate peoples with distinct lands assigned under God’s purpose. The boundary prevented confusion over the territory given to Israel and that belonging to Edom.

Num 20:14-21 From Kadesh, Moses sent messengers to tell the king of Edom,…
Deu 23:7-8 Do not despise an Edomite, for he is your brother.…

On the east, your southern border will run from the end of the Salt Sea,

The Salt Sea, now called the Dead Sea, provided a clear natural landmark for the eastern end of the southern boundary. Its southern tip marked where the border began before turning westward across the wilderness. The detailed description established the actual limits of the land Israel was to possess.

Jos 15:2-4 Their southern border started at the bay on the southern tip…
Deu 3:17 The Jordan River in the Arabah bordered it…
Ezk 47:18 On the east side the border will run between Hauran…

cross south of the Ascent of Akrabbim,

The Ascent of Akrabbim, meaning “Ascent of Scorpions,” was a steep, rugged pass along the southern edge of the land. Its name reflects the severe desert terrain that characterized this region. From this point the boundary turned southward, marking the limits of Israel’s inheritance.

Jos 15:3 proceeded south of the Ascent of Akrabbim…
Jdg 1:36 And the border of the Amorites extended…
Ezk 47:19 On the south side it will run from Tamar…

continue to Zin,

The boundary extended through the Wilderness of Zin, the arid region near Kadesh-barnea where Israel spent significant time during the wilderness years. The area stood near the approach to Canaan and recalled Israel’s earlier rebellion and delay in entering the land.

and go south of Kadesh-barnea.

Kadesh-barnea lay near the southern border and served as an important staging point in Israel’s journey. Passing south of it distinguished the boundary of the territory Israel was to possess from the wilderness through which the nation had traveled.

Then it will go on to Hazar-addar

From Kadesh the line continued to Hazar-addar, one of several named landmarks that established a definite and measurable border. The detailed boundaries showed that the land was not a vague promise but a specific inheritance assigned by God.

Num 20:22-23 After they had set out from Kadesh, the whole congregation…
Deu 2:1 Then we turned back and headed for the wilderness…
Deu 1:46 For this reason you stayed in Kadesh for a long time…

and proceed to Azmon,

Azmon marked the next point along the southern frontier. The orderly progression of these locations defined the extent of the land entrusted to Israel and confirmed the fulfillment of God’s covenant promise.

where it will turn from Azmon,

Azmon marked a change in the southern boundary’s course, likely near the southwestern limits of Canaan. Though its exact location is no longer certain, it lay in the region approaching the border with Egypt. The detailed boundary description shows that Israel’s inheritance was defined by God and assigned with care.

Jos 15:4 It proceeded to Azmon, joined the Brook of Egypt…
Jos 15:3 proceeded south of the Ascent of Akrabbim…
Ezk 47:19 On the south side it will run from Tamar…

join the Brook of Egypt,

The boundary then followed the Brook of Egypt, generally identified with Wadi El-Arish, a seasonal watercourse west of the Negev. It formed the natural southern frontier between Canaan and Egypt, separating the land of promise from the land where Israel had been enslaved.

and end at the Sea.

The boundary reached the Mediterranean Sea, the western edge of the land. Its conclusion at the sea completed the southern border and confirmed the extent of the territory allotted to Israel.

Your western border

“Your western border” marked the limit of Israel’s inheritance along the Mediterranean Sea. God assigned each tribe a defined homeland, fulfilling His covenant promise to give Abraham’s descendants the land of Canaan.

Jos 1:4 Your territory shall extend from the wilderness and Lebanon…
Deu 11:24 Every place where the sole of your foot treads…

will be the coastline of the Great Sea;

The Great Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and a major landmark in the ancient Near East, formed a natural western boundary. Its coast provided access to fishing, trade, and contact with surrounding peoples while also serving as a significant defensive barrier.

Jos 15:12 And the western border was the coastline of the Great Sea.…
Ezk 47:20 And on the west side, the Great Sea will be the boundary…

Israel’s territory was not left undefined or subject to human claims. The boundary established the full extent of the land God allotted to His people.

The line extended inland to a northern mountain landmark, distinct from the Mount Hor where Aaron died near Edom. These defined boundaries established the land Israel was to possess under God’s command.

Num 33:37 They set out from Kadesh and camped at Mount Hor…
Deu 32:50 And there on the mountain that you climb, you will die…

and from Mount Hor

The Mount Hor named here marks the northern boundary of Canaan and is distinct from the mountain near Edom where Aaron died. Its exact location is uncertain, though it likely lay in the northern highlands near the route toward Hamath.

to Lebo-hamath,

The boundary continued to the approach of Hamath, an important city and kingdom in the region of the Orontes River in Syria. This point defined the northern reach of the land assigned to Israel.

Ziphron marked part of Israel’s northern boundary, though its exact location is no longer certain. Its inclusion in the boundary list shows that the land promised to Israel was defined by God with specific limits and was to be received as an inheritance, not claimed at will.

Ezk 47:15 This shall be the boundary of the land: On the north side…
Jos 13:5 the land of the Gebalites; and all Lebanon to the east,…

and end at Hazar-enan.

Hazar-enan formed the eastern end of the northern border. Its name means “village of springs,” suggesting a settlement associated with water sources, a valuable feature in the dry regions near Israel’s northeastern frontier. The boundary secured the land assigned to the tribes and distinguished Israel’s territory from the surrounding nations.

Ezk 47:17 So the border will run from the Sea to Hazar-enan…
Ezk 48:1 Now these are the names of the tribes:…

This will be your boundary on the north.

The northern line completed one side of the land God appointed for Israel. These boundaries established the extent of the inheritance Israel was to occupy under God’s command and reminded the nation that the land belonged to Him.

And your eastern border

“And your eastern border” introduces the eastern boundary of the land Israel was to receive as its inheritance. God carefully defined the territory, establishing clear limits for the nation and its tribal allotments.

from Hazar-enan

Hazar-enan, meaning “village of springs,” marked the northern starting point of Israel’s eastern boundary, likely near the Syrian frontier. Its location helped define the outer extent of the promised land.

Ezk 47:17 So the border will run from the Sea to Hazar-enan…
Ezk 48:1 Now these are the names of the tribes:…
