Isaiah 46
Berean Study Bible

Babylon’s Idols

Bel crouches; Nebo cowers.

Bel, or Marduk, was Babylon’s chief god, and Nebo was associated with wisdom and writing. Babylon trusted these gods as protectors of its empire, yet Isaiah portrays them as defeated and humiliated before the Lord.

Jer 50:2 Announce and declare to the nations; lift up a banner…
Jer 51:44 I will punish Bel in Babylon. I will make him spew out…
Isa 21:9 “Look, here come the riders, horsemen in pairs.”…

Their idols weigh down beasts and cattle.

When Babylon fell to the Medes and Persians in 539 BC, its images could not defend the city or save their worshipers. The idols had to be carried away with the spoils of conquest.

Gen 31:34 Now Rachel had taken Laban’s household idols…
Jer 10:5 Like scarecrows in a cucumber patch, their idols…
Hab 2:18-19 What use is an idol, that a craftsman should carve it…

The images you carry are burdensome,

Rather than bearing their people through danger, Babylon’s gods depended on people to transport, protect, and preserve them. Their supposed strength proved empty in the day of judgment.

Isa 45:20 Come, gather together, and draw near, you fugitives…
Jer 10:3-4 For the customs of the peoples are worthless;…
Gen 31:19 Now while Laban was out shearing his sheep,…

a load to the weary animal.

The heavy images exhausted the animals forced to carry them. In contrast to powerless idols, the God of Israel carries His people and remains able to save them.

Exo 23:5 If you see the donkey of one who hates you…
Deu 22:4 If you see your brother’s donkey or ox fallen on the road…
Pro 12:10 A righteous man regards the life of his animal, …

The gods cower;

Bel and Nebo, leading gods of Babylon, are portrayed as powerless before the Lord. Though Babylon honored them as mighty protectors, they could neither preserve the city nor defend their worshipers when judgment came.

Isa 19:1 This is the burden against Egypt: Behold, the LORD rides…
Jer 50:2 Announce and declare to the nations; lift up a banner…
1Sa 5:3-4 When the people of Ashdod got up early the next morning,…

they crouch together,

The idols share Babylon’s humiliation. Gods once carried in triumphal processions are pictured in defeat, unable to resist the rise of the Persian conquerors foretold by Isaiah.

Isa 45:16 They will all be put to shame and humiliated;…
Jer 10:14-15 Every man is senseless and devoid of knowledge;…
Psa 97:7 All worshipers of images are put to shame…

unable to relieve the burden;

Rather than helping their people, the idols became burdens to be transported. They could not save Babylon’s inhabitants or even secure their own escape.

Isa 45:20 Come, gather together, and draw near, you fugitives…
Jer 10:5 Like scarecrows in a cucumber patch, their idols…
Psa 115:4-8 Their idols are silver and gold, made by the hands of men.…

but they themselves go into captivity.

When Babylon fell, its images were carried away as plunder with the defeated nation. Their captivity exposed the emptiness of trusting in gods made by human hands.

Jer 48:7 Because you trust in your works and treasures,…
Jer 49:3 Wail, O Heshbon, for Ai has been destroyed;…
Hos 10:6 Yes, it will be carried to Assyria as tribute…

“Listen to Me, O house of Jacob,

God summons the people of Israel, bound together through their descent from Jacob and their covenant with Him. Though they have often resisted Him, they remain the nation He chose and called to hear His word.

Isa 48:1 Listen to this, O house of Jacob, you who are called…
Mic 3:1 Then I said: “Hear now, O leaders of Jacob,…
Gen 49:2 Come together and listen, O sons of Jacob;…

all the remnant of the house of Israel,

The address includes those left within Israel after judgment, exile, and national decline. God preserves a people for Himself even when the larger nation turns from Him.

Isa 10:20-22 On that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors…
Mic 2:12 I will surely gather all of you, O Jacob; …
Zep 3:12-13 But I will leave within you a meek and humble people…

who have been sustained from the womb,

Israel’s existence has depended on God from its beginning. He formed the nation through the patriarchs, delivered it from slavery, and maintained it despite its repeated rebellion.

Psa 71:6 I have leaned on You since birth; You pulled me…
Isa 44:2 This is the word of the LORD, your Maker…
Psa 139:13-16 For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together…

carried along since birth.

Like a father bearing a child, the Lord has upheld Israel through every stage of its history. The contrast is with the lifeless idols described in the surrounding passage, which must be carried by their worshipers, while the living God carries His people.

Psa 22:10 From birth I was cast upon You; from my mother’s womb……
Deu 1:31 and in the wilderness, where the LORD your God carried you…
Exo 19:4 You have seen for yourselves what I did to Egypt,…

Even to your old age, I will be the same,

God contrasts His enduring faithfulness with the lifeless idols of Babylon, which had to be carried away by animals and men. Israel’s security rested not in changing circumstances or human strength, but in the Lord who remains faithful throughout every stage of life.

Psa 102:27 But You remain the same, and Your years will never end.
Mal 3:6 Because I, the LORD, do not change, you descendants of Jacob…
Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

and I will bear you up when you turn gray.

Old age could bring weakness and dependence, yet God promised that His care would not diminish as His people grew frail. He would uphold them with the same fatherly care He had shown from the beginning.

Psa 71:18 Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God,…
Deu 1:31 and in the wilderness, where the LORD your God carried you…
Isa 63:9 In all their distress, He too was afflicted…

I have made you, and I will carry you;

As Israel’s Creator, the Lord claimed them as His own and accepted responsibility for their preservation. Unlike false gods that burden their worshipers, the God of Israel carries His people through hardship, judgment, exile, and restoration.

Deu 32:6 Is this how you repay the LORD, O foolish and senseless…
Psa 28:9 Save Your people and bless Your inheritance;…
Psa 100:3 Know that the LORD is God. It is He who made us,…

I will sustain you and deliver you.

Though Judah faced the coming Babylonian captivity because of its sin, God would not abandon His covenant people. He would preserve a remnant, bring them back from exile, and ultimately fulfill His promise of deliverance through the Messiah.

Psa 55:22 Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you;…
Psa 34:19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD…
2Ti 4:18 And the Lord will rescue me from every evil action…

To whom will you liken Me or count Me equal?

Surrounded by nations devoted to carved images and many gods, Israel was repeatedly tempted by idolatry. The Lord stands alone in power, wisdom, holiness, and authority; no object fashioned by human hands can rival Him.

Isa 40:25 “To whom will you liken Me, or who is My equal?”…
Isa 40:18 To whom will you liken God? To what image…
Exo 15:11 Who among the gods is like You, O LORD? Who is like You…

To whom will you compare Me, that we should be alike?

Babylonian gods were assigned limited roles and represented by images carried in processions. The God of Israel made and rules all creation, directs history, and needs no support from those who worship Him.

Psa 86:8 O Lord, there is none like You among the gods,…
Deu 33:26 There is none like the God of Jeshurun…
Isa 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is no other; there is no God but Me…

They pour out their bags of gold

People willingly spend their wealth to produce objects of worship, treating created things as worthy of ultimate trust.

Exo 32:2-4 So Aaron told them, “Take off the gold earrings…
Hos 8:4 They set up kings, but not by Me. They make princes…
Jdg 8:24-27 Then he added, “Let me make a request of you,…

and weigh out silver on scales;

The careful measurement of precious metal shows deliberate devotion and substantial personal investment in an idol.

Gen 23:16 Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms and weighed out……
Jer 32:9-10 So I bought the field in Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel…
Zec 11:12-13 Then I told them, “If it seems right to you,…

they hire a goldsmith to fashion it into a god,

Skilled craftsmen shaped expensive materials into images, exposing the absurdity of a god made and controlled by human hands.

Isa 40:19-20 To an idol that a craftsman casts and a metalworker…
Jer 10:3-5 For the customs of the peoples are worthless;…
Isa 44:12-17 The blacksmith takes a tool and labors over the coals;…

so they can bow down and worship.

Those who made the idol then submitted themselves before it, giving reverence to an object unable to see, hear, act, or save.

Exo 20:4-5 You shall not make for yourself an idol…
Deu 5:8-9 You shall not make for yourself an idol…
Psa 97:7 All worshipers of images are put to shame…

They lift it to their shoulder and carry it along;

Babylonian idols were fashioned from wood, metal, or stone and depended entirely on worshippers for transport. Rather than carrying their people, these gods had to be carried by them.

Jer 10:5 Like scarecrows in a cucumber patch, their idols…
Isa 45:20 Come, gather together, and draw near, you fugitives…

they set it in its place, and there it stands,

Once installed in a temple or shrine, the idol remained where human hands placed it. Its supposed authority rested on the labor and devotion of those who made and positioned it.

Dan 3:1 King Nebuchadnezzar made a golden statue sixty cubits high…
1Ki 12:28-29 After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves…

not budging from that spot.

The fixed image had no life, will, or power to act. Its stillness exposed the emptiness of trusting in a created object.

Psa 115:5-7 They have mouths, but cannot speak; they have eyes…
Psa 135:15-17 The idols of the nations are silver and gold,…

They cry out to it, but it does not answer;

In distress, idolaters could appeal to their gods, but no response came because the image could neither hear nor speak.

1Ki 18:26-29 And they took the bull that was given them, prepared it…
Hab 2:18-19 What use is an idol, that a craftsman should carve it…

it saves no one from his troubles.

Idols could not deliver their worshippers from danger, defeat, or judgment. Only the living God has power to save and sustain His people.

Jer 2:28 But where are the gods you made for yourselves?…
Jdg 10:14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen.…

Remember this

God calls Israel to recall that He alone has governed their history, delivered them, and declared the future. Their past experience of His power leaves them without excuse for turning to idols.

Deu 32:7 Remember the days of old; consider the years long past…
Psa 77:11 I will remember the works of the LORD;…

and be brave;

Surrounded by Babylonian power and religious pressure, they were to stand firmly rather than follow the fear-driven worship of false gods. Courage rested on the certainty that the Lord, not Babylon’s idols, controlled events.

Deu 31:6 Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or terrified…
Jos 1:9 Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous?…

take it to heart,

The warning required more than outward acknowledgment. Israel was to weigh God’s words seriously and allow them to confront their divided loyalty.

Deu 32:46 “Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared…
Deu 4:39 Know therefore this day and take to heart…

you transgressors!

The people had rebelled through idolatry and disobedience. Yet God addressed them directly, calling them to face their sin and return to the One who had not abandoned His covenant purposes.

Hos 14:9 Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;…
Psa 37:38 But the transgressors will all be destroyed;…

Remember what happened long ago,

Israel was to recall the Lord’s mighty works in history: the exodus from Egypt, His preservation in the wilderness, the giving of the land, and His repeated deliverance despite their unfaithfulness. Babylon’s idols had no such record of power or faithfulness.

Deu 32:7 Remember the days of old; consider the years long past…
Psa 143:5 I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your works…
Psa 77:11 I will remember the works of the LORD;…

for I am God, and there is no other;

The Lord alone created, rules, and directs history. The gods honored by Babylon were powerless images, unable to save their worshipers or alter the course God had determined.

Isa 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is no other; there is no God but Me…
Deu 4:35 You were shown these things so that you would know…
Deu 4:39 Know therefore this day and take to heart…

I am God, and there is none like Me.

No being rivals the Lord in power, wisdom, authority, or holiness. He alone declares what will happen and brings His purposes to completion.

Isa 40:25 “To whom will you liken Me, or who is My equal?”…
Jer 10:6 There is none like You, O LORD. You are great,…
2Sa 7:22 How great You are, O Lord GOD! For there is none like You…

I declare the end from the beginning,

God alone knows the full course of history and governs it according to His will. In Isaiah’s setting, this distinguished the Lord from Babylon’s idols, which could neither foresee events nor save their worshipers.

Isa 48:3-5 I foretold the former things long ago;…
Isa 44:7 Who then is like Me? Let him say so! Let him declare his case…
Isa 41:22-23 Let them come and tell us what will happen.…

and from ancient times what is still to come.

His plans were established before the events of Israel’s exile and restoration unfolded. The promised return from Babylon and the later coming of the Messiah stand within His long-declared purpose.

Isa 45:21 Speak up and present your case—yes, let them take counsel…
Isa 42:9 Behold, the former things have happened, and now…
Dan 2:28 But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries,…

I say, ‘My purpose will stand,

The captivity would not cancel God’s covenant purposes for His people. Though nations rise and fall and human rulers act freely, none can overturn what God has determined.

Pro 19:21 Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the purpose…
Psa 33:11 The counsel of the LORD stands forever, …
Isa 14:24 The LORD of Hosts has sworn: “Surely, as I have planned,…

and all My good pleasure I will accomplish.’

God would bring about His stated purposes, including Israel’s deliverance through Cyrus and the fulfillment of His redemptive plan. What He intends is righteous, certain, and completed in His time.

Eph 1:5 He predestined us for adoption as His sons…
Eph 1:11 In Him we were also chosen as God’s own,…
Php 2:13 For it is God who works in you to will and to act…

I summon a bird of prey from the east,

God identifies Cyrus the Great, the Persian ruler who would rapidly overthrow Babylon. Coming from east of Babylon, Cyrus would serve as God’s instrument in bringing judgment on Babylon and releasing the Jewish exiles.

Isa 41:2 Who has aroused one from the east and called him to his feet…
Deu 28:49 The LORD will bring a nation from afar…
Ezk 17:3 this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘A great eagle…

a man for My purpose from a far-off land.

Though Cyrus did not belong to Israel or initially know the Lord, he was appointed to carry out God’s purpose. His rise and military success would demonstrate that the nations and their rulers remain under God’s direction.

Isa 44:28 who says of Cyrus, ‘My shepherd will fulfill……
Isa 45:1 This is what the LORD says to Cyrus His anointed,…
Ezr 1:1 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia,…

Truly I have spoken, and truly I will bring it to pass.

God’s declaration of Cyrus’s coming was certain because He governs history and fulfills what He announces. Babylon’s power could not prevent the outcome God had determined.

Num 23:19 God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man,…
Ezk 12:25 I, the LORD, will speak whatever word I speak…

I have planned it, and I will surely do it.

The fall of Babylon and the restoration of God’s people were not accidental events. They unfolded according to God’s settled purpose, showing His authority over kings, empires, and the future.

Isa 14:24 The LORD of Hosts has sworn: “Surely, as I have planned,…
Isa 37:26 Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it;…
Pro 19:21 Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the purpose…

Listen to Me,

God directly summons His people to give full attention to His word and authority.

Psa 81:8 Hear, O My people, and I will warn you: O Israel…
Isa 55:3 Incline your ear and come to Me; listen,…
Pro 1:8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction,…

you stubborn people,

Their refusal to trust and obey Him had hardened them against correction despite His repeated acts of deliverance and revelation.

Act 7:51 You stiff-necked people with uncircumcised hearts and ears!…
Deu 9:6 Understand, then, that it is not because of your…
Jer 7:26 Yet they would not listen to Me or incline their ear,…

far removed from righteousness:

They had departed from the life God requires and could not restore themselves; yet God was about to reveal His saving righteousness and fulfill His purpose for His people.

Isa 59:9 Therefore justice is far from us, and righteousness…
Isa 59:14 So justice is turned away, and righteousness stands…
Rom 10:3 Because they were ignorant of God’s righteousness…

I am bringing My righteousness near;

God announces His imminent action on behalf of His covenant people. His righteousness will be displayed in faithful judgment against Babylon and in deliverance for Israel.

Isa 51:5 My righteousness draws near, My salvation is on the way…
Psa 98:2 The LORD has proclaimed His salvation…

it is not far away,

Though exile had made restoration seem distant, God’s purpose was already advancing. The promised overthrow of Babylon and return of the captives would come in His appointed time.

Deu 30:11-14 For this commandment I give you today is not too difficult…
Rom 10:6-8 But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say…

and My salvation will not be delayed.

God would not abandon His people in captivity. Their deliverance was certain, accomplished by His power rather than by Israel’s strength.

Hab 2:3 For the vision awaits an appointed time;…
Heb 10:37 “In just a little while, He who is coming will come…”…

I will grant salvation to Zion

Jerusalem and its people would be restored after the exile. The promise also looks beyond the return from Babylon to God’s full salvation for His people.

Psa 14:7 Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come from Zion!…
Isa 62:1 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent…

and adorn Israel with My splendor.

The nation’s humiliation would give way to renewed honor as God restored His worship, city, and people. Israel’s restored condition would display the glory of the Lord.

Isa 62:3 You will be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD,…
Isa 60:1-3 Arise, shine, for your light has come…
