Genesis 6

Corruption on the Earth

Now when men began to multiply on the face of the earth

Human population increased greatly as the generations descended from Adam spread across the inhabited world. God’s command to fill the earth was being carried out, yet the growing population also became marked by the corruption that would soon bring divine judgment.

Gen 1:28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply…
Gen 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them,…
Exo 1:7 but the Israelites were fruitful and multiplied;…

and daughters were born to them,

Families produced both sons and daughters in the ordinary course of human life. The daughters mentioned here become central to the events that follow, when the sons of God chose wives from among them, contributing to the widespread rebellion preceding the flood.

God announced His response to the corruption spreading through mankind before the Flood.

God set a remaining period of 120 years before the Flood, allowing time for Noah to prepare the ark while judgment approached.

The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—

The Nephilim, often translated “giants” and linked to a Hebrew root meaning “to fall” or “to cause to fall,” were formidable people whose violence and reputation marked the world before the flood. Their presence belonged to the growing corruption that brought God’s judgment upon the earth.

Then the LORD saw

And the LORD regretted

Humanity’s violence and corruption had brought creation into open rebellion against its Maker. God’s regret reveals His holy sorrow over sin and the broken fellowship it produced.

1Sa 15:11 “I regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned away…
1Sa 15:35 And to the day of his death, Samuel never again visited Saul…

that He had made man on the earth,

The people created to bear God’s image had filled the earth with wickedness instead of righteousness. Their corruption prepared the way for the judgment of the flood.

Ecc 7:29 Only this have I found: God made mankind upright…
Psa 100:3 Know that the LORD is God. It is He who made us,…

and He was grieved in His heart.

God’s grief shows His personal concern for His creation and His opposition to human evil. His coming judgment would restrain wickedness while preserving Noah and his family for a new beginning.

God’s grief reveals His righteous sorrow over the evil of His creatures. His judgment was not careless or arbitrary, but a holy response to a world that had abandoned His purposes.

Noah’s Favor with God

Noah, however,

Noah, however, stood apart from a world marked by corruption and violence. While humanity as a whole had turned from God, Noah remained faithful, and God preserved him for the work ahead.

Heb 11:7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen,…

found favor

Noah found favor with God, not because he had earned deliverance, but because God graciously chose him. This favor led to God’s covenant with Noah and the preservation of his family through the coming flood.

Exo 33:17 So the LORD said to Moses, “I will do this very thing…
Act 7:46 who found favor in the sight of God and asked to provide…
Luk 1:30 So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary,…

in the eyes of the LORD.

God saw Noah’s life fully and judged him according to His righteous standard. The Lord’s approval of Noah distinguished him from his generation and prepared him to become the father of a renewed human race after the flood.

1Pe 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous…
Psa 34:15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous…
Pro 15:3 The eyes of the LORD are in every place…

This is the account of Noah.

Genesis turns to Noah’s family line—the toledot, meaning “generations” or “account”—and the events that would preserve humanity through the Flood. Noah stands at the center of God’s response to a world filled with wickedness and violence.

2Pe 2:5 He did not spare the ancient world when He brought the flood…
Heb 11:7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen,…
1Pe 3:20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently…

Noah was a righteous man,

Noah lived in faithful obedience to God while those around him rejected God’s ways. His righteousness distinguished him from the corruption of his age.

Php 2:15 you may be blameless and pure, children of God without fault…
Job 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job…
Deu 18:13 You must be blameless before the LORD your God.

blameless in his generation;

His life was marked by integrity, completeness of character, and wholehearted devotion to God. Though surrounded by moral ruin in a corrupt generation, or age, Noah did not join in the evil that had spread through mankind.

Gen 17:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared…
Psa 15:2 He who walks with integrity and practices righteousness…
1Th 2:10 You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous…

Noah walked with God.

Noah maintained a close and obedient relationship with the Lord. His fellowship with God prepared him to receive God’s warning, build the ark, and carry out the work appointed to him.

Gen 5:22 And after he had become the father of Methuselah,…
Mic 6:8 He has shown you, O man, what is good.…
Deu 10:12 And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you…

And Noah had three sons:

Noah’s family would become the human line preserved through the flood and the source of the nations that repopulated the earth afterward.

Ham,

and Japheth.

Japheth’s descendants spread widely among the nations, fulfilling the blessing of enlargement—his name means “expansion” or “enlargement”—given after the flood.

Gen 10:2 The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai…
Gen 9:27 May God expand the territory of Japheth;…
1Ch 1:5 The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai…

Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God,

Humanity had turned from God’s created order into widespread rebellion. What people may have accepted or celebrated was openly evil before God, whose judgment is true and complete. Sin had spread through human life and society since the fall, defiling the world entrusted to mankind and bringing it to the point of judgment.

Psa 14:2-3 The LORD looks down from heaven upon the sons of men…
Psa 53:2-3 God looks down from heaven upon the sons of men…
Deu 32:5 His people have acted corruptly toward Him;…

and full of violence.

Violence marked the age of Noah, including oppression, cruelty, and the abuse of power. Rather than exercising dominion under God with justice, people harmed one another without restraint. The depth of this evil explains the coming flood: God would judge a world ruined by sin while preserving Noah and his family through whom His purposes would continue.

Ezk 7:23 Forge the chain, for the land is full of crimes…
Mic 6:12 For the wealthy of the city are full of violence,…
Hab 1:2-3 How long, O LORD, must I call for help…

And God looked upon the earth

God’s examination reveals the true condition of the world before Him. What He had declared very good at creation had become marked by rebellion and disorder.

Psa 11:4 The LORD is in His holy temple; the LORD is on His throne…

and saw that it was corrupt;

Human sin had spoiled the order God established, filling the earth with violence and evil. The corruption was open and complete, bringing creation under the consequences of mankind’s fall.

Deu 32:5 His people have acted corruptly toward Him;…
Isa 1:4 Alas, O sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity…

The devastation of sin reached throughout the inhabited world. Humanity’s corruption affected the whole created order entrusted to its care.

Psa 104:29-30 When You hide Your face, they are terrified;…

had corrupted their ways.

The inhabitants of the earth had abandoned God’s design for life and conduct. Their corrupted “ways,” meaning their behavior and moral lifestyle, had departed from righteousness. Their persistent evil made judgment necessary, while Noah stood apart as the man through whom God would preserve life.

Preparing the Ark

Then God said to Noah,

God spoke directly to Noah, the righteous man who walked with Him in a corrupt generation. Noah received clear warning and instruction concerning the coming judgment.

Gen 7:1 Then the LORD said to Noah, “Go into the ark…
Gen 8:15 Then God said to Noah,
Gen 9:8 Then God said to Noah and his sons with him,

“The end of all living creatures has come before Me,

God had seen the full extent of human sin and determined that judgment was necessary. The corruption of mankind was no longer hidden or ignored.

Gen 7:23 And every living thing on the face of the earth…
Gen 7:21 And every living thing that moved upon the earth…
2Pe 2:5 He did not spare the ancient world when He brought the flood…

because through them the earth is full of violence.

Violence had spread through human society, overturning the order God established and filling the world with injustice and bloodshed.

Ezk 7:23 Forge the chain, for the land is full of crimes…
Psa 74:20 Consider Your covenant, for haunts of violence…
Hab 1:2-3 How long, O LORD, must I call for help…

Now behold, I will destroy both them and the earth.

The flood would bring judgment upon sinful humanity and the world defiled by its violence. God would “destroy” (Hebrew shachath, also meaning “corrupt”) the earth, yet preserve Noah, his family, and the animals in the ark, providing a new beginning after judgment.

Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood;

Noah received a direct command from God to build a large vessel, the ark, for the preservation and deliverance of his household and the living creatures God would bring to him. Gopher wood cannot be identified with certainty today, but it was evidently suitable for a structure that would endure the Flood.

make rooms in the ark

The ark was to contain carefully arranged compartments, or “rooms” (also “nests”), for Noah’s family, animals, food, and supplies—a place of safety and rest. Its design shows that God provided for the practical needs of every creature preserved through the judgment.

And behold, I will bring floodwaters upon the earth

God announces His determined judgment upon a world corrupted by human violence and wickedness. The flood would be a real, universal catastrophe in which the Creator exercised authority over the world He had made.

Nothing living on the earth would survive apart from those God preserved through Noah’s ark. The destruction was complete, yet God’s provision for Noah, his family, and the animals preserved a remnant through whom life would continue.

But I will establish My covenant with you,

God pledged to preserve Noah through the coming judgment and to continue humanity through him. This is the Bible’s first explicit reference to a covenant, a binding commitment initiated by God. Noah’s obedience did not avert the flood, but God provided a way of deliverance and secured the future of his family.

Gen 9:9 Behold, I now establish My covenant with you…
Gen 9:11 And I establish My covenant with you: Never again…
Isa 54:9 For to Me this is like the days of Noah,…

and you will enter the ark—

The ark was God’s appointed refuge from the flood. Its construction followed God’s specific instructions, and Noah’s entrance marked his trustful obedience to God’s warning. Amid universal judgment, the ark preserved life by God’s provision.

Gen 7:1 Then the LORD said to Noah, “Go into the ark…

Heb 11:7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen,…

2Pe 2:5 He did not spare the ancient world when He brought the flood…

And you are to bring two of every living creature into the ark—

God commanded Noah to preserve representatives of the land-dwelling creatures that would otherwise perish in the Flood. The ark was not merely a refuge for Noah’s family but the appointed means by which animal life would continue after judgment. God’s care extends to the creatures He made, and Noah was entrusted with their protection.

God commanded the preservation of representative pairs from the birds, land animals, and creeping creatures. The breadth of the command reflects His care for the living world He created and His purpose to restore life after the flood.

The ark would preserve both Noah’s family and the animals through the judgment of the flood. God’s judgment would be universal, yet His provision of the ark showed His purpose to sustain life and begin again upon the earth.
