Job 2

Job Loses His Health

On another day

A later occasion brought the heavenly court again before the LORD, continuing the account of Job’s testing.

Dan 7:9-10 As I continued to watch, thrones were set in place,…
Rev 4:1-4 After this I looked and saw a door standing open in heaven.…

the sons of God

Angelic beings assembled in God’s presence as His servants and subjects.

Gen 6:2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of men…
Job 38:7 while the morning stars sang together…

came to present themselves before the LORD,

Their appearance reflects God’s rule over the heavenly realm and the accountability of all His servants to Him.

Job 1:6 One day the sons of God came to present themselves…
Psa 89:7 In the council of the holy ones, God is greatly feared…

and Satan also came with them

Satan returned among the angelic assembly as the adversary, or accuser, who had challenged Job’s integrity.

Zec 3:1-2 Then the angel showed me Joshua the high priest…
Rev 12:9-10 And the great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent…

to present himself before Him.

Though opposed to God’s purposes, Satan remained under God’s authority and could act only within the limits God allowed.

Job 1:7 “Where have you come from?” said the LORD to Satan.…
1Ki 22:19-22 Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the LORD:…

“Where have you come from?” said the LORD to Satan.

The LORD summons Satan before His throne, showing that Satan remains subject to God’s authority. God’s question draws out Satan’s purpose and prepares for the testing of Job.

Zec 3:2 And the LORD said to Satan: “The LORD rebukes you, Satan!…
Mat 4:10 “Away from Me, Satan!” Jesus told him. “For it is written:…
Mat 16:23 But Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan!…

“From roaming through the earth,” he replied,

Satan reports his restless movement among mankind, watching for grounds to accuse and oppose those who fear God.

1Pe 5:8 Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil…
Zec 1:10-11 Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained,…
Zec 6:7 As the strong horses went out, they were eager to go…

“and walking back and forth in it.”

His search is deliberate and widespread, revealing the ongoing conflict between Satan’s rebellion and God’s rule. Satan may test and accuse, but he acts only within the limits God permits.

Gen 13:17 Get up and walk around the land, through its length…
Jos 1:3 I have given you every place where the sole of your foot…
Deu 11:24 Every place where the sole of your foot treads…

Then the LORD said to Satan,

God addresses Satan within the heavenly court, where Satan appears as the accuser. Satan acts only within limits God permits.

Job 1:7 “Where have you come from?” said the LORD to Satan.…
Zec 3:1-2 Then the angel showed me Joshua the high priest…
1Ki 22:19-23 Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the LORD:…

“Have you considered My servant Job?

Job is identified as God’s faithful servant, known and approved by Him despite Satan’s accusations.

Job 1:8 Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered…
Ezk 14:14 then even if these three men—Noah, Daniel, and Job—…
Jas 5:11 See how blessed we consider those who have persevered…

For there is no one on earth like him,

Job stands apart in his generation for the consistency of his devotion to God.

1Ki 3:12 I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that…
2Ki 18:5 Hezekiah trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel.…
2Ki 23:25 Neither before nor after Josiah was there any king…

a man who is blameless and upright,

His life is marked by integrity, honest conduct, and wholehearted obedience, not sinless perfection.

Psa 37:37 Consider the blameless and observe the upright…
Luk 1:6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God…
Gen 6:9 This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man…

who fears God and shuns evil.

Job reveres God and deliberately rejects evil, demonstrating that his faith governs both his worship and his conduct.

Job 28:28 And He said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord…
Pro 16:6 By loving devotion and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for,…
Pro 8:13 To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate arrogant pride…

He still retains his integrity,

After the loss of his wealth and children, Job has not turned against God or abandoned his faith.

Job 27:5 I will never say that you are right; I will maintain…
Psa 26:1 Of David. Vindicate me, O LORD!…
Pro 10:9 He who walks in integrity walks securely,…

even though you incited Me against him

Satan’s challenge led to Job’s testing, yet God remains sovereign over all that occurs.

1Ch 21:1 Then Satan rose up against Israel and incited David…
2Sa 24:1 Again the anger of the LORD burned against Israel,…

to ruin him without cause.”

Job’s suffering is not punishment for hidden wrongdoing. His trial exposes the false claim that he serves God only because he has been blessed.

Psa 69:4 Those who hate me without cause outnumber the hairs…
Jhn 15:25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:…
Psa 35:7 For without cause they laid their net for me;…

“Skin for skin!”

Satan argues that Job’s earlier losses did not strike at his own body. He assumes that a man will surrender lesser things, even family and possessions, if doing so preserves his life.

Psa 49:7-8 No man can possibly redeem his brother or pay his ransom…
Ecc 5:15 As a man came from his mother’s womb, so he will depart…
Job 1:21 Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will return.…

Satan replied.

As the adversary standing before God, Satan challenges Job’s integrity and seeks permission to test whether Job’s fear of God will endure personal suffering.

Job 1:9-11 Satan answered the LORD, “Does Job fear God for nothing?…
Mat 4:3-4 The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God…
Zec 3:1-2 Then the angel showed me Joshua the high priest…

“A man will give up all he owns in exchange for his life.

Satan claims that self-preservation is Job’s true motive and that physical affliction will expose him. The coming trial will test that accusation as Job loses his health but continues to acknowledge God’s sovereignty.

Pro 13:8 Riches may ransom a man’s life, but a poor man…
Luk 12:15 And he said to them, “Watch out! Guard yourselves…
Mrk 8:36 What does it profit a man to gain the whole world…

But stretch out Your hand

Satan asks God to permit a further test of Job, moving from the loss of possessions and family to personal suffering. God’s hand represents His direct authority over the events Satan seeks to use against Job.

Exo 7:5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD,…
Exo 9:15 For by this time I could have stretched out My hand…
Ezk 6:14 I will stretch out My hand against them,…

and strike his flesh and bones,

The proposed affliction would reach Job’s body itself, bringing severe pain and weakness. In a world where health was commonly associated with God’s blessing, such suffering would appear to signal that Job had been abandoned or judged.

Job 33:19-22 A man is also chastened on his bed with pain…
Psa 102:3-5 For my days vanish like smoke, and my bones burn…
Psa 38:3-8 There is no soundness in my body because of Your anger;…

and he will surely curse You to Your face.”

Satan maintains that Job’s devotion depends on God’s protection and prosperity. He predicts that intense suffering will lead Job openly to renounce God, placing Job’s faithfulness under its deepest trial.

Job 1:11 But stretch out Your hand and strike all that he has…
Job 1:5 And when the days of feasting were over,…
Rev 16:9 And the people were scorched by intense heat,…

“Very well,” said the LORD to Satan.

God permits Satan to test Job, yet the scene makes clear that Satan acts only under God’s authority. Job’s suffering is not outside God’s knowledge or rule, even when its purpose is not immediately revealed.

Job 1:12 “Very well,” said the LORD to Satan. “Everything he has…
Luk 22:31-32 Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you like wheat.…
Jhn 19:11 Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me”…

“He is in your hands,

Satan is allowed to strike Job’s body and possessions, deepening the test already begun. The affliction will expose the question raised in the heavenly court: whether Job fears God only because he has been blessed.

1Co 5:5 hand this man over to Satan for the destruction…
2Ti 2:26 Then they will come to their senses and escape…
Rev 2:10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer.…

but you must spare his life.”

God establishes an unyielding limit on Satan’s power. Job may suffer severely, but his life remains under God’s protection. Satan is not free to act beyond the boundary God has set.

Psa 68:20 Our God is a God of deliverance; the Lord GOD is our rescuer…
Psa 116:8-9 For You have delivered my soul from death,…
Psa 118:17-18 I will not die, but I will live and proclaim…

So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD

Having received God’s permission, Satan left the heavenly court to carry out the test within the limits God had set. His actions remained subject to the Lord’s authority.

Job 1:12 “Very well,” said the LORD to Satan. “Everything he has…
Zec 3:1 Then the angel showed me Joshua the high priest…
Gen 4:16 So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD…

and infected Job with terrible boils

Satan struck Job with a painful, disfiguring disease that added physical misery to the loss of his children and possessions. The affliction was severe enough to isolate Job and make his suffering visible to all around him.

Exo 9:9-11 It will become fine dust over all the land of Egypt,…
Deu 28:27 The LORD will afflict you with the boils of Egypt,…
2Ki 20:7 Then Isaiah said, “Prepare a poultice of figs.”…

from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.

Job’s body was covered from head to foot, leaving him without relief. The completeness of his suffering intensified the test of his faithfulness while showing that Satan could not act beyond what God permitted.

Deu 28:35 The LORD will afflict you with painful, incurable boils…
Isa 1:6 From the sole of your foot to the top of your head,…
Lev 13:12-13 But if the skin disease breaks out all over his skin…

And Job took a piece of broken pottery

Reduced from prosperity to misery, Job used a discarded shard, reflecting the humiliation and ruin that had overtaken his life. His outward condition now matched the devastation of his losses.

Psa 22:15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd…
Psa 31:12 I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind.…
Isa 30:14 It will break in pieces like a potter’s jar…

to scrape himself

Covered with painful boils, Job sought even slight relief from the itching and discomfort. With no remedy available, he used the pottery shard to scrape his diseased skin, displaying the severity of his affliction.

Deu 28:27 The LORD will afflict you with the boils of Egypt,…
Deu 28:35 The LORD will afflict you with painful, incurable boils…
Exo 9:10-11 So they took soot from the furnace and stood before Pharaoh.…

as he sat among the ashes.

Job sat in ashes as one grieving and broken before God. The place of mourning emphasized his loss, isolation, and sorrow as he endured suffering that touched his body, family, possessions, and reputation.

Jon 3:6 When word reached the king of Nineveh, he got up…
Job 42:6 Therefore I despise myself, and I repent in dust and ashes.”
Psa 102:9 For I have eaten ashes like bread and mixed my drink…

Then Job’s wife said to him,

Job’s unnamed wife shares in the devastation of his losses and witnesses his painful illness. Her words reveal how deeply Job’s suffering has affected his household and closest human relationship.

1Ki 21:7 But his wife Jezebel said to him, “Do you not reign…
2Sa 6:20 When David returned home to bless his own household,…
Gen 16:2 So Sarai said to Abram, “Look now, the LORD has prevented…

“Do you still retain your integrity?

Job has continued to fear God and refuse the sin Satan claimed suffering would produce. His wife cannot understand why he remains faithful when every visible reason for hope seems gone.

Job 27:5 I will never say that you are right; I will maintain…
Job 31:6 let God weigh me with honest scales, that He may…
Psa 26:1 Of David. Vindicate me, O LORD!…

Curse God and die!”

Overcome by despair, she urges Job to renounce God and end the struggle. Her counsel becomes another part of Job’s testing, pressing him to abandon the integrity that has marked his life.

Job 1:11 But stretch out Your hand and strike all that he has…
Job 1:5 And when the days of feasting were over,…
Lev 24:16 Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD…

“You speak as a foolish woman speaks,”

Job rejected his wife’s counsel to abandon trust in God. Though his suffering was severe, he refused to treat God as unjust or to turn from Him in bitterness.

Pro 9:13 The woman named Folly is loud; she is naive…
Pro 14:1 Every wise woman builds her house, but a foolish one…
Pro 11:22 Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman…

he told her.

Job answered her directly, preserving his integrity and leading his household by example even while weakened by grief, illness, and loss.

Pro 15:28 The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer,…
Pro 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word…
Pro 15:23 A man takes joy in a fitting reply—and how good…

“Should we accept from God only good and not adversity?”

Job recognized that the Lord remains sovereign in both blessing and hardship. He did not claim to understand the reason for his suffering, but he would not accept God’s gifts in prosperity while rejecting His rule in affliction.

Lam 3:38 Do not both adversity and good come from the mouth…
Ecc 7:14 In the day of prosperity, be joyful, but in the day of…
Deu 30:15 See, I have set before you today life and prosperity,…

In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.

Job’s words showed continued faithfulness under intense trial. He mourned deeply and spoke honestly of his pain, yet he did not accuse God of wrongdoing.

Job 1:22 In all this, Job did not sin or charge God with wrongdoing.
Psa 39:1 For the choirmaster. For Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.…
Psa 17:3 You have tried my heart; You have visited me in the night.…

Job’s Three Friends

Now when Job’s three friends—Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite—

Job’s friends came from different regions, reflecting the breadth of his influence and reputation. Eliphaz was from Teman in Edom, a place noted for wisdom. Bildad’s connection to Shuah suggests ties to a people descended from Abraham through Keturah. Zophar came from Naamah, likely in Arabia.

Job 4:1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
Job 8:1 Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:
Job 11:1 Then Zophar the Naamathite replied:

heard about all this adversity that had come upon him,

News had reached them of Job’s devastating losses—his possessions, servants, children, and health. His suffering was so severe that it became known beyond his own land.

Job 1:13-19 One day, while Job’s sons and daughters were eating…
2Ki 19:1-2 On hearing this report, King Hezekiah tore his clothes…
Neh 1:3-4 And they told me, “The remnant who survived the exile…

each of them came from his home,

Their journey required deliberate effort and showed genuine concern for their afflicted friend.

Jhn 11:19-21 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary…
Luk 7:11-13 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain.…
Gen 50:10-11 When they reached the threshing floor of Atad…

and they met together to go and sympathize with Job and comfort him.

They arranged to mourn with Job and offer comfort in his grief. Their original purpose was compassionate, though their later words would add to his distress rather than relieve it.

Job 42:11 All his brothers and sisters and prior acquaintances came…
2Co 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,…
Rom 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.

When they lifted up their eyes from afar,

Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar had come to mourn with Job and offer comfort. Seeing him from a distance, they immediately recognized that his suffering had profoundly altered him.

Gen 22:4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place…
Gen 37:18 Now Joseph’s brothers saw him in the distance,…

they could barely recognize Job.

His disease and grief had so devastated his body that even his closest friends struggled to identify him. Job’s outward condition revealed the severity of the affliction he had endured.

Lam 4:8 But now their appearance is blacker than soot;…
Isa 52:14 Just as many were appalled at Him—His appearance…
Isa 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows…

They began to weep aloud,

Their loud weeping expressed genuine shock and sorrow. They did not approach Job casually; his condition moved them to mourn with him.

Gen 45:2 But he wept so loudly that the Egyptians…
1Sa 30:4 So David and the troops with him wept…

and each man tore his robe

Tearing their robes was a public sign of grief and distress. By doing so, they acknowledged the terrible calamity that had come upon their friend.

Gen 44:13 Then they all tore their clothes, loaded their donkeys…
2Sa 1:11 Then David took hold of his own clothes and tore them…
Gen 37:34 Then Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth around his waist,…

and threw dust in the air over his head.

Casting dust upon themselves was a customary act of mourning, expressing humility, mortality, and sorrow. Before speaking, the friends shared Job’s grief through silent, visible acts of lament.

Ezk 27:30 They will raise their voices for you and cry out bitterly.…
Lam 2:10 The elders of the Daughter of Zion sit on the ground…
Jos 7:6 Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell facedown…

Then they sat on the ground with him

Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar joined Job in the posture of mourning, humbling themselves beside him and sharing his grief.

Lam 2:10 The elders of the Daughter of Zion sit on the ground…
Ezk 3:15 I came to the exiles at Tel-abib who dwelt by the River…
Rom 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.

for seven days and seven nights,

They remained with him through the customary period of mourning, giving their full presence to a suffering they could not yet explain.

Gen 50:10 When they reached the threshing floor of Atad…
1Sa 31:13 Then they took their bones and buried them…
Lev 8:33-35 You must not go outside the entrance to the Tent…

but no one spoke a word to him

Their silence recognized that Job’s anguish was too great for easy comfort or correction.

Lev 10:3 Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD meant…
Psa 39:2 I was speechless and still; I remained silent…
Lam 3:28 Let him sit alone in silence, for the LORD…

because they saw how intense his suffering was.

His affliction was plainly overwhelming, and their first response was appropriate compassion rather than argument.

Lam 1:12 Is this nothing to you, all you who pass by?…
Psa 22:14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are disjointed…
Gen 45:3 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph!”…
